Cover Story
Technori lights up Dubuque
Founded in Chicago,
Technori.com itself is a startup,
created to empower and connect
tomorrow’s startup leaders
through highly curated showcase
events.
Technori directly addresses a
universal gap in the timeline of
growing a startup - for many
they sit at the moment
between launching and traction,
for others they come at
the moment between launching
and raising funding. Technori
helps entrepreneurs gain meaningful
momentum in order to
secure their first customer,
employee, major partnership or
first investment.
To accomplish this, Technori
gathers hundreds of people
together to watch as five start-
ups launch on stage. By allowing
newly-launched startups to
get in front of these members
of the startup community (and
tens of thousands more online),
Technori offers a powerful
platform for them to present
their ideas and market their
products.
Technori is emerging as one of
the top startup showcases in
the world and is now the third
largest monthly startup event in
the United States. Technori
holds 50 showcases per year,
with 24,000+ attendees. To
date, over 250 companies have
appeared on their main stage.
These companies now employ
over 1,000 people and have
raised over $201 million in
funding. Technori is here to
make their journey a little
smoother and increase their
chances of success.
Joining cities such as Atlanta,
Chicago, and Miami, TechnoriDBQ
was launched in the fall by
co-producers Erin Dragotto and
Emily Goodman.

Erin, current Director of Development
for the National Mississippi
River Museum & Aquarium,
and former Executive Director
for the Chicago Council on
Science and Technology has
significant expertise in
non-profit management and is
well versed in working with
funding organizations. In her
role as co-producer of TechnoriDBQ,
Erin will bring her
passion to elevate small cities
and towns through the world of
technology and innovation.
Dubuque native Emily Goodmann
holds a Ph.D. and M.A.
from Northwestern University
in the field of Media, Technology
& Society, and a BA in
Cinema and Media Studies from
University of Chicago, and was
the fifteenth employee at the
Los Angeles-based startup CinemaNow,
the first company to
distribute feature films online.
Participating Startups
and the tri-states region.
Technori Dubuque Producers
Emily Goodmann
Erin Dragotto
Emily’s interest in Technori
stems from both her academic
interest in technology, and
personal experience at a startup.
In her role as co-producer of
TechnoriDBQ, Emily aims to
assist burgeoning Midwestern
startups achieve the traction
they need to find success within
their markets, and to connect
Dubuque to the growing technology
industries within Iowa
and the tri-state area.
How Does your business/organization address
budget challenges/surpluses/windfalls?
"surpluses" occur easily, though they
do not for hotels and food service
-
CEO
Cartegraphe
“For Cartegraphe, it starts with a
balanced budget. Forecast visibility
provides confidence in plan and
performance. Surpluses either accelerate
our strategy or create a greater
give us the opportunity to make
surprise.”
General Manager
Hotel Julien Dubuque
“Occupied room nights are the
largest denominator used in
-
nues. Challenges may occur if
occupied room night growth is not
targeted to address revenue gaps.
If challenges exist in a specific
expense area, say food cost for beef,
menu reviews are conducted to
minimize the impact. I'd love to say
building that is 100 years old and
heavily used by travelers, clients, and
patrons requires constant re-investment.
Surpluses are reserved for
capital improvements where needed.
We are blessed to have an owner
that believes "It is important to
-
ues to look like it just was renovated
yesterday.” Windfalls? ABC’s The
Bachelor
windfall” for Hotel Julien Dubuque,
being the first and only hotel in the
United States ever to be filmed for a
Final Rose Ceremony. This windfall of
exposure for the hotel and Dubuque
to over 6 million people resulted in
almost immeasurable social media
record numbers for wedding sales,
and tremendous exposure for the
hotel, Dubuque, and Iowa. This
windfall only happened because of
the greatest hospitality team there is,
Team Hotel Julien Dubuque.“

Tri-State Vein Center, P.C.
Tri-State Vein Center P.C. located in Dubuque,
IA has been granted accreditation in Superficial
Venous Treatment and Management by the
Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC).
Accreditation by the IAC means that Tri-State
Vein Center P.C. has voluntarily undergone a
thorough review of its operational and technical
components by a panel of experts. The IAC
grants accreditation only to those facilities that are found to be providing quality
patient care, in compliance with national standards through a comprehensive
application process including a detailed review of selected patient procedures.
IAC accreditation is a “seal of approval” that patients can rely on as an indication
that the vein center’s processes and procedures
have been carefully evaluated by medical
experts in the field of treatment and management
of superficial venous disorders. When
scheduling a vein center procedure, patients are
encouraged to inquire as to the accreditation
status of the facility where their treatment and
management will be performed and can learn
Van Meter inc.
Van Meter Inc. announced that it has successfully
completed its purchase of Bright Electrical Supply, a
leading lighting distributor located at 217 N. Western
Avenue in Chicago. Intentions to buy the lighting
distributor were announced on December 1, 2015.
According to Van Meter President and CEO, Kevin
Powell, Bright Electric is known for its expertise and
customer service in lighting distribution. “It is a strong
and reputable company in a large and growing
market,” said Powell. “We look forward to building on
Bright’s more than 100 years of success, integrating
our work teams and bringing a more comprehensive
offering of electrical and mechanical solutions to the
industrial, commercial and contractor customers in
the greater Chicago area.” The Bright team members,
including long-time president, David Borovsky, are
now Van Meter employee-owners. “We are thrilled to
be joining the Van Meter team,” expressed Borovsky.
“This is an opportunity to join our great, local company
with a larger, best-in-class distributor – a 100
percent employee-owned company with similar
values, a progressive culture and an excellent vision
for the future. Our industry faces new challenges and
opportunities each day and I have every confidence
that becoming part of Van Meter will position us for
continued success.”
largest Chambers in the state of Iowa will meet
the push for a state wide workforce strategy study.
The Dubuque Chamber is a member of ICA and
Chamber President Molly Grover, who serves on
the executive committee, will be in attendance
representing the concerns of our business community.
The meeting will be held at the Des Moines
challenges we face.”
Van Meter’s
known as Bright Electric. “The Bright Electric brand is
important,” explained Powell. “It is a name known
