Side Trips
The Lenten season brings a tradition for
our church family — The Living Last
Supper. It’s a dramatization of Leonardo
Da Vinci’s painting of the same name.
Each of the apostles
takes a turn thinking
out loud about the
startling words of Jesus:
“One of you will
betray me.”
Sheldon United
Methodist Church began
the drama in 1985
and has performed it
in more than 50 communities.
I have seen
the performance more
than once each year
MYRNA
WAGNER
since my husband became involved over a
decade ago. It later became a family affair
when our son at the age of 10 became an
apprentice for the lighting board. He’s handled
that task on his own every year since
and this year has started teaching someone
to take over for him.
He also filled in last week for one of the
disciples who had a scheduling conflict. It
amazed me how quickly Sam memorized
two long paragraphs of monologue. I
would have worked on that for two months,
and it took him about two days. I suppose
the fact that Sam has seen the show so
many times helped him pick it up quickly.
When he woke up the morning of the
performance with a dreadful head cold
and hacking cough, I immediately shifted
into Dr. Mom mode and loaded him up
with “severe cold and flu” medicine. The
label claimed this product covered nearly
every symptom imaginable, but after he
swallowed the second dose I noticed “this
product may cause drowsiness” and had a
Iowa moment Information
Apparently he wasn’t susceptible to that
It will be a one-stop shop for visitors
eager to check out local businesses.
The Orange City Business Expo
will be held this year on March 22-23
from 4-8 p.m. at MOC-Floyd High
School.
The expo usually includes about 60
area businesses and those interested
in setting up a table at the event can
sign up through March 18.
In a new twist this year representatives
from State Farm will lead a talk
about changes in social security while
Huizenga Law Firm will talk about
Medicaid changes and estate planning.
“We encourage businesses to try
something new or a little different
from a normal setup,” Orange City
chamber office manager Taylor Reynolds
said. “And we look for feedback
from customers year to year for what
they’d like to see at the expo.”
For several years now guests have
been able to visit with numerous representatives
from just about every type
of business imaginable.
There are also plenty of door prizes
and giveaways offered throughout
the two-day event by individual businesses.
Mr. Twister will be on hand as well
to provide excitement for the kiddos
tagging along as he makes his dazzling
array of balloon animals and
objects.
“The main goal is to showcase quality
businesses and for visitors to learn
about the things they offer in the
community,” Reynolds said.
Of course, the businesses look
forward to this annual opportunity
to meet with both regular and potentially
new customers.
“Since Premier began providing
phone, internet and cable television
in Orange City in 2007, the expo has
been a great opportunity for us to
showcase our services and gain customers,”
said Ryan Kruyf of Premier
Communications in a blog post on
orangecityiowa.com.
“Every year since then gets even better
and we look forward to the interaction
we have with new and existing
customers.”
In that same blog post Gina
Poppema of Joe’s TV & Appliance
mentioned that they look forward to
playing games, laughing and talking
with with customers and fellow businesses
during the expo.
“We enjoy getting out of our four
walls and hearing feedback – both
positive comments and customer
service concerns. We see it as an
opportunity for conversations that
might go unspoken and unresolved,”
Poppema said.
Bring the family, meet some friends
and see what Orange City has to offer
at the annual OC Business Expo. F
One night one acts
of
Northwestern College hosts World Premiere Festival March 19
One night, eleven plays, eleven
screenwriters with shows making
their world premieres.
Northwestern College is hosting
the 21st annual World Premiere Festival
on Saturday, March 19. Students
will be presenting 11 new plays with
the first play starting at 6:30 p.m. in
the Allen Theatre of the DeWitt Theatre
Arts Center. Students as well as
the public are invited to attend this
free event.
“At Northwestern, we believe if
we’re going to contribute to the culture,
we should be giving the culture
new plays! So we teach playwriting
courses, we have playwrights/
screenwriters on our faculty, and we
include new plays in our season,”
said Jeff Barker, professor of theatre
and speech at Northwestern College.
“Every year, in fact, we have a World
Premiere Festival. This year, we have
eleven one acts that will be presented,
including one that just won a major
award at the Kennedy Center/American
College Theatre Festival.”
The eleven plays were written in the
fall in the college’s “One-Act Playwriting”
course and all the plays are short,
about 10 pages each, which adds up to
about 10 minutes in length per play.
Each of the one act plays features a
different topic that the screenwriters,
director, actors and audience will get
to explore together.
“There is quite a variety! There are
plays about a robbery gone wrong,
a geography contest, the death of a
grandparent, the child of superhero
parents, the neighbors of Noah watching
him build the ark, and more,” said
Barker.
Some of the other plays will focus
on the bond between siblings, school
pranks, friendship, having children
and mistaken identity.
This is a unique experience for the
students in another aspect. Each of
the student playwrights will be directing
another student’s show. This is
done to give all of the students the
full experience of bringing a show to
the stage.
“We want our student playwrights
to experience the whole process from
blank page to opening night. We hope
they’ll be ready to work with directors
of their plays in the future,” Barker
said. “And we also want our students
to have plenty of opportunities to do
some directing while they’re here.”
It’s a special night for these theater
students, but it’s also a special night
for everyone else. They get the chance
to see eleven one act shows written
and directed by people before they
make a name for themselves. F
I
artist Matt Drissell actually encourages
you to do just that.
Drissell, through Orange City Arts,
will be offering a class geared toward
kids to encourage them to create art
with food in a class entitled, “Play
with your food” on Saturday, March
19. The class is being offered to students
in grades 5-8 and 9-12, which is
exactly the point, according to Orange
City Arts executive director Janine
Calsbeek.
“We wanted a fun class for high
school and middle school people.
(Sorry, adults!),” wrote Calsbeek.
Students don’t have to worry if
they aren’t a budding Rembrandt; the
class is open to those who can wield
a paintbrush and to those who have
never even tried.
“No previous painting experience
is required. I can’t tell too many
specifics,” Calsbeek said. “I think he
Learn to paint with food with Matt Drissell
will demonstrate his process, and let
people paint with the materials he
uses. He distills paint from the food
products.”
Matt Drissell currently lives in Sioux
Center and is an associate professor of
art at Dordt College. He has a Master
of Fine Arts in Painting from the New
York Academy of Art and a Bachelor of
Art from Wheaton College in Illinois.
Before becoming a professor at
Dordt College, he taught middle
and high school art for five years in
Milwaukee, WI, and later in St. Louis,
MO.
Drissell talked about his work of
creating art with food such as popsicles,
ice cream, lemonade, bomb
pops, jello, bacon, Sriracha sauce, coffee
grounds and cake mixes and here’s
what he had to say:
“By utilizing the highly processed
food treats, my work suggests themes
of land, agriculture, and sustainability.
John won first place in the Junior
Strings division. He is awaiting
news on his application to the Honors
by his teacher. If accepted, he will
have an opportunity to perform as
part of an orchestra in that famous
venue.
William Alexander, 11, began cello
lessons at age three and studied
for the next five years with Jay
Reeve in Sioux Falls. Since 2012,
William has studied with Dr. Karren
The Arts at St. Joseph
Alexander Piano Trio to perform on Palm Sunday
Classical music will echo
through the rafters of St.
Joseph Catholic Church
on the afternoon of Palm
Sunday, March 20. The Arts at
St. Joseph will present The Alexander
Piano Trio as the next
performance in the church’s
ongoing series of cultural
events.
Doors will open at 4 p.m.
with the concert slated to
begin at 4:30 p.m. and last
about 90 minutes with an
intermission. A reception will
follow in the parish center.
The concert is sponsored by
the The Patrice and Rita Leary
Foundation and United Community
Bank.
David Alexander, 15, on
piano, John Alexander, 13, on
violin, and William Alexander,
11, on cello comprise the
Alexander Piano Trio and the
brothers have been playing
as an ensemble at numerous
public and private events
throughout the Iowa Great
Lakes area for the past three
years. They are the sons of
David and Helen Alexander
of Arnolds Park.
At St. Joseph, they will be
playing an assortment of pieces
by noted composers such
as Vivaldi, Weber, Brahms
and Beethoven.
“The church has great
acoustics for cello and piano
and what they do is made perfectly
for the church,” Father
Tom Flanagan said. “They’re
wonderful young artists with
great futures ahead of them.”
While they have not performed
at the church before,
the trio has experience with a
previous performer from The
Arts at St. Joseph.
Cellist Thomas Fortner held
a master class coinciding with
his show at the church and
all three Alexanders attended
getting pointers from him as
well as his fellow musicians.
Furthermore those musicians
were hosted at the Alexander
home during their stay in the
lakes area.
The Alexander home has
been one full of music since
the boys were young. David
began piano lessons at the
age of four while his brothers
both began taking lessons
by the time they were three
years old. All three have garnered
awards and honors and
also perform with the South
Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Their mother, Helen, has
sat in on a countless number
of their lessons as well as
listening and helping them
practice at home.
She’s had a firsthand account
of the hard work that
has helped develop their
musical talents. Working with
them at home on the piano
Winemaker’s
Wine
101
dinner to be held March 19
Making wine is an art and a science
and winemaker Sam Jennings
with Round Lake Vineyards
& Winery will be sharing some
of his knowledge about the process.
On Saturday, March 19, Round Lake
Vineyards & Winery will be hosting a
Winemaker’s Dinner. It will feature a
four-course meal, wine and fun conversation.
The dinner will get started
at 6 p.m.
“This will be a smaller intimate dinner
and it will be a chance to learn a
little more from the winemaker, Sam
Jennings,” said Tailyr Hansen, the
event planner at Round Lake Vineyards
& Winery. “Sam will sit down
with the group and have dinner with
them and share stories about his experiences
in winemaking. He’s traveled a
lot in his previous jobs.”
The organizers of the event are intentionally
keeping the event small
with spots available for only 30-40
people.
“We wanted to keep it a smaller
event so people could have more time
to talk with Sam,” Hansen said.
There is still seating available for the
event, but it is limited to the members
of the Wine Club. If you are interested
in the event and you aren’t a Wine
Club Member, you can still sign up
today and come to the dinner.
The four courses for the dinner include
an appetizer, Waldorf salad, the
choice of a stuffed pork loin or wild
mushroom stuffed ravioli with potatoes
and a vegetable. Each course will
be paired with a different wine. Dessert
will be paired with the winery’s
apple ice wine, which is not normally
available for tasting.
“Each course will served with a different
wine and Sam will talk about
the wine pairings with the food and
why they work,” Hansen said. “If
anyone has any questions about anything
he does or what happens in the
winery, they’ll be able to ask Sam at
dinner.”
The dinner will take place in the
tank room, which is a special spot for
the event to take place.
“The whole atmosphere will be very
unique and cool,” Hansen said. “We’ll
be having a dinner to learn about
wine and the wine-making process
in the very room where we do that. It
will be a very cool event.” F
concert Friday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel. The performance is free, and the public
sacred music in both English and Latin;
American spirituals and black gospel
and popular Chinese love song.
The a Cappella Choir’s tour was held
in partnership with the National Presbyterian
Church of Taiwan. It was arranged
