PROFILE
A figure collector hailing from Malaysia. Started
being fascinated with figurine photography back
in 2012 and have been somewhat active ever since
being inspired by other figurine photographers. His
collection primarily consists of PVC figures from
different manufacturers.
The main theme he uses when doing figurine photoshoots
is much more toward boudoir fashion and
glamour shots. Lighting is a predominant factor
showcased and high contrast photography is one
of his favourite themes.
PROFILE
I started taking photos of bishoujo figures when I
started collecting them. It is aproximately 3 years
ago. I was active as a editor on Konata website
during 2013, 2014. I was mainly focused on writing
articles about bishoujo figures. I started project
Figubo (Figure Board) in 2014, it a project focusing
on gifted photographers of Japanese bishoujo figures
and dolls that were mainly inspired by anime.
The idea of this project is to offer an opportunity
for photographers to display their work through a
series of exhibitions held in Czech Republic. Figubo
cooperate with Animefest (Animefest.CZ is the oldest
and largest anime and manga convention in the
Czech Republic, organized by a non-profit organization
Brno otaku).
Animefest gives opportunity to make exhibitions
and to publish articles in its magazine FestZin. Unfortunately
the Figubo website is not yet finished,
but it should be soon (we are hardly working on the
translation to different languages).
There’s no such thing as a flawless and perfect person?
Well, have you heard of Sakamoto?
There is this guy who is... highly eccentric, and of course not everyone
likes him. However, he deals with the pranks in such a cool way
that make girls swoon over him and change the bullies’ attitude in an
instant. From catching an insect with chopsticks, dealing with being
almost late like a baseball player and reacting to a mother that is super
attracted to him. That is Sakamoto, and this manga, Sakamoto desu
ga?, introduces you to a side-breaking comedy that will make you want
to have him as a classmate... or even an acquaintance.
Sakamoto desu ga? has been nominated on the 7th Manga Taisho
Award. It also received an anime adaptation by the studio behind Fruits
Basket and Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!, Studio Deen, for
the Spring 2016 anime season.
Sakamoto desu ga? has been published by Seven Seas Entertainment
under the title “Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto”. The first volume
was released on August 4, 2015.
PROFILE
I’m Magu, a figure enthusiast from America. Currently
I live in Seattle, but I grew up in Colorado. I
first got into figure collecting in 2009 when I was in
high school, and started doing figure photography
as a hobby not too long after that. My collection is
mostly figures of my favorite anime boys, and I also
have a sizable collection of Pokemon toys. Seeing
all my figures lined up on my desk always puts a
smile on my face!
I’m a noob when it comes to cameras, but I love
taking cool pictures of my figures when I travel. I’ve
brought my figures to exciting places like Israel,
Canada, and Japan. I do most of my work with nendoroids
because I like their cute size, versatility, and
portability, but in the future I’d like to work more
with my scale figures too. I always get so inspired
seeing other collectors’ amazing photos, and that
motivates me to take better and better pictures!
In addition to figure photography, I like to play videogames,
draw, and write fanfiction. I read manga
and watch anime when I can make time for it, too.
TIPS AND TRICKS FOR FIGURE PHOTOGRAPHY
PART 2
PHOTO
COMPOSITION
by jvruanto
Now that you know how the master trio works, it’s time to discuss
the basics on photo composition. In this article, I’ll be giving the first
three basic composition tips
ABOUT JVRUANTO
Power Rangers fan since 1994. A frustrated Red Ranger and Pokemon
Master at heart. I love collecting Pokemon Takara Tomy figures, select
S.H.Figuarts Power Rangers figures, Bandai Megazords and DX Zords,
TRITIP
PART 2
PHOTO COMPOSITION
RULE OF THIRDS
As mathematical as it may sound, this photo composition is actually
easy to learn. This is basically a simple guideline on how to compose/frame
your photos. The principle is that you need to consider
9 equal segments in one photo. You may refer to the followings samples
so you can see how this works.
TRITIP
PART 2
PHOTO COMPOSITION
IMAGE OF IMAGINARY LINES
Almost all of cameras have the “rule of thirds” feature; your screen
would actually have lines to guide you when you’re shooting your
subject. If you’ve mastered this rule, you’ll no longer need to use this
feature.
www.phygure.com
NO 05 | ISSUE 03 34
TRITIP
PART 2
PHOTO COMPOSITION
WHAT IS DEPTH?
Since you’ve learned about aperture in the first article, learning
depth in composing your photo would be easy.
Depth in composition is basically adding dimension in a flat photo. If
you can make your photo pop from its background or foreground,
you’ve already mastered how depth in photo composition works.
TRITIP
PART 2
PHOTO COMPOSITION
DEPTH CONTROL
You can actually add elements in your foreground and
background while placing your figure in the middle.
You can also shoot outdoors. Elements present in
your shots would emphasize the photos’ depth, you
can add interesting elements and objects to add to
the effect. Cont. p.40
Hi! I’m not good at describing myself, but I tell you a
few things about me so I’ll be brief.
My name is María, from Spain. I began taking photos
since 2007 but I’ve recently started to collect
figures, just about 8 months, when I created myfigurecollection
profile.
It was at that moment when I found the perfect way
to unite and unify the two things that I like, figures
and photography. I enjoy both equally. Thus, I discovered
what I want to shoot more, that’s my collection
of figures. I hope you like what I do. I still
have much to improve. Nice to meet you all!
I’m just a 19 year old regular student from Germany.
I started with toy photography on 25th of december
2013 arround 8 o’clock right after receiving my
first figure. After seeing photos of nendoroids on
certain platforms I just wanted to be a part of this.
The first steps were rough , I’m kinda shy so going
outside to shoot was a real adventure at first ,
I’m fine by now. I try to improve steadily and really
like to learn new tricks from other people, such as
building dioramas and stuff. I’m also really happy to
found some new comrades through Twitter, shoutout
TRITIP
CROPPING
Some say that a good photographer doesn’t crop photos
– well, I have to disagree on this. Personally, a good
photo is a good photo regardless if it was cropped or
not. If cropping would make your photo appear good,
I’d say you should go for it. I’ll share some tips on how
you can crop your photos properly, edited or unedited.
TRITIP 1: (Figure portrait shooting): Never cut at the
joints – this hold true in human portraiture and in figure
photography. Make sure to avoid cropping at the
joints, basically at the parts that would appear painful
if you cut them.
TRITIP 2: Consider the background: do not just crop
the photos without analyzing its whole composition.
You should also consider how it would look like when
cropped.
TRITIP 3: Eliminate unnecessary noise: as much as
adding elements would help create dynamics in your
photos, don’t forget that this would also make or break
your entire photo. Make sure that you just crop what is
needed; too much of something could be bad for your
composition.
Since you’ve learned about the basics on photo composition,
you can now practice and experiment on composing your
shots. Don’t forget to be artistic and creative with your figure
photography! This is the first part of the composition tips and
tricks. Stay tuned for the next composition tips in the next
article.
A Tech Support slash Quality Analyst by night
(or whatever my shift is) and a geek slash aspiring-toy-photographer
during free time. I want to
say that my collection is a wide variety of sorts that
caught my interest. These pieces are not that many
but the points of interest are distinct. I select particulars
from known franchises and add it to my growing
“happy place”.
So far, I have pieces in line with Nintendo, Disney,
Marvel, DC Unlimited, Capcom, and some toys from
Movies and TV Series.
PROFILE
A figure collector / photographer from Philippines.
An anime & manga fan most of his life & started his
own figure collection in 2010 & started photography
2 years later as a hobby. His collection mainly
consists of Good Smile Company’s Nendoroid
figure line. He also own a few Figmas & Banpresto
scale figures. The main theme I use when using my
Nendoroids as subjects (which is usually the case)
is “Taking on the big world”, since it fits their chibi
form.
PROFILE
I’m an Italian student of Philosophy fond of Japanese
culture, manga and anime. From the year 2012
I united two great passions, photography and figure
collection, giving origin to something completely
new which is rendering me great satisfactions.
My intent is to extract, in the best way, the soul of
my figures creating scenery and atmospheres that
fit perfectly, playing with the dimensions and the
perspectives, at times helping myself adding some
effect in post production.
PROFILE
Hello! I’m Stereometric and I’ve been an avid figure
collector and photographer for about seven
years now! I began this hobby after being inspired
by some very talented photographers such as Kodomut,
Adun and Danny Choo.
I mainly love to work with natural light and color,
but recently I’ve been exploring diorama building
and indoor lighting. My collection consists mainly of
nendoroids and scale figures.
It’s been wonderful watching this hobby grow and
I hope to continue to be inspired by all the talent.
