Welcome

Welcome to the new Easter edition of the Newcastle City Learning course brochure.

For many of us Spring signifies the beginning of the season of regeneration and growth, when fresh roots take hold and

start to flourish. Why not sow the seeds of learning and watch your potential grow with one of our adult learning courses?

Spending a few hours a week taking a class can improve your job prospects, and help you gain the skills and

qualifications you need to make real progress. Learning can boost your confidence, introduce you to new friends, and

help you achieve your goals. Whether it’s to better support your children in their learning, to change career, or even to start

your own business, we can help.

Enrolling is easy, through our website, in our centres or by giving us a telephone call. Our experienced staff can provide

information, advice and guidance about the wide range of learning opportunities available, along with details of the

financial support we can offer, and how to take advantage of an Advanced Learner Loan to pay for your course (where

applicable). We have lots of concessions and can help with childcare too. We offer an extensive range of courses at days

and times to suit. We also offer apprenticeships and diplomas that will enable you to go on to University through our

Access to Higher Education Programme.

We hope you find a class you are interested in, and we look forward to welcoming you to Newcastle City Learning soon.

Cllr Hilary Franks – Chair of the Governing body for Newcastle City Learning

The listings will give you the level of the course, the day and time it runs, its location and cost. Our courses are colour coded. There is a £5 enrolment deposit per

course on blue courses for non-fee paying learners, which will be refunded on completion of the full course. There is a £5 enrolment deposit per course on yellow

courses for non-fee paying learners which will not be refunded. The course key will show you which courses you can get free, which have discounts available,

and which you will need to pay for. Many of our courses are funded by the Skills Funding Agency which means that they cost you less. However you choose to

pay, if you leave your course after it has started, the full course fee is still payable, unless your reason for leaving would entitle you to a refund.

If you have already completed this or a similar qualification in the past your course fee cannot be subsidised, fee remission will not apply and you could be asked

to pay twice the course fee. We will check your previous learning and inform you if different charges apply.

Thinking of University?

Find out about our

September

2016 starts

available

Access to HE Diploma

To help you plan ahead, we would like to invite you to make your enquiries now and

attend our introductory courses in preparation for our September 2016 intake. Read

on, contact us for advice and get a headstart on your learning journey.

Who is the course for?

The Access to HE Diploma has been designed for those adults who

want to access Higher Education. It will help to build your

confidence and develop your social and communication skills as

well as increasing your knowledge of particular subject areas. It

offers an alternative route into Higher Education for learners without

the appropriate qualifications. Most learners go on to take further

study at university or college while others simply want to improve

their job prospects. Whatever your reason for starting, you will find

that you will be learning with other adults who all want to learn.

Over the years we have progressed hundreds of learners into

universities all over the country.

You will require good communication skills and literacy and

numeracy at Level 2. We will ask you to undertake an initial

assessment so that we can determine your best route into the

Diploma. It may be that you will need to do something different

before you start, and your initial assessment and interview will help

us to determine this.

In preparation for your Diploma, we ask everyone to attend one of

our free introductory courses in English and Maths (see page 4)

to brush up on skills you may have forgotten, so that you are ready

and confident to start your Diploma.

How does the course work?

Our Access to HE Diploma gives you 5 pathways to choose from.

Your choice of diploma will be determined by the degree course or

future career you wish to follow. Sometimes it will be determined by

the subjects that you need to study.

If you are unsure, further details and advice on diplomas will be

given during your induction interview.

Our current pathways are:

• Health

• Humanities

• Maths and Engineering

• Science

• Social Sciences

Important Note

It is essential that you research your degree course and

university requirements before starting your Access to HE

programme. This will ensure that your subject choices and previous

qualifications meet the universities’ entry requirements.

Many undergraduate degree courses require GCSEs at grade C or

above. If you do not have these, you may have to study them

separately.

Who can I ask for advice?

There are a number of experienced and qualified staff to help you at

Newcastle City Learning. They are available throughout the term

and on our open days and enrolment events.

We will hold Access to HE Diploma open days on

Wednesday 27 April 1am - 7pm

Friday 20 May 12 noon - 5pm

Friday 10 June 12 noon - 5pm

Support for your learning

Support

When you sign up for a class, you are asked to fill in an enrolment

form. This gives us all the information we need to contact you and

the details we need for our funding body (the cost of your course is

subsidised by them). But it is also an opportunity for you to tell us

about the support you may need to help you with your course.

You will be asked if you consider yourself to have a disability,

learning difficulty or health problems. The information you give us

if you say yes will only be shared with those who need to know,

like your tutor. They can then discuss your needs with you, and put

things in place, where possible, to make it easier for you to

succeed. Disclosing this information to us as soon as possible also

gives us the best chance of getting these arrangements in place

for the start of your course.

We also ask everyone if they would find learning easier with

support such as help with English and maths, careers guidance

and course expenses and have specialist tutors who can help. By

giving us as much information as you can, we will work with you in

confidence to give you the best possible chance to do well. If at

any time on your course you need assistance please talk to your

tutor.

Finance

We have limited funds available to help people on low incomes to

study. 'Discretionary Learner Support' (DLS) may be available to

help with your course fees, travel costs, childcare, books and

equipment. This applies to blue banded courses only.

To qualify you must:

• claim an income based benefit and/or

• have a household income of less than £21,000

To claim assistance with your childcare costs your child or children

must be under 15 years of age, and being cared for by a

registered childminder or nursery. If you get financial assistance

but decide to leave before the course ends you may have to repay

the money. Check with your centre to see if you can get support as

there are other conditions too.

The Advanced Learner Loan Bursary Fund may be available to help

eligible learners with childcare and other costs. Please ask for details.

We want to involve learners and potential learners in shaping the

feedback by using online questionnaires and analysing the

results.

Wellbeing

Apprenticeships

Employers can become involved in the Wellbeing Apprenticeship Fund, which was recently set up by Newcastle City

Council to create work based study programme and Apprenticeships for individuals who may need additional support

in order to enter the job market.

We may be able to offer a financial incentive to help support the recruitment and training of a young person.

Individuals supported by the Wellbeing Apprenticeship Fund will be employed whilst participating in a structured learning programme

that could be either an apprenticeship or study programme or both.

Applications will primarily be invited from businesses that can offer a workplace opportunity to support and nurture a young person.

Working for your

business

Newcastle City Learning (NCL) want to be your first

choice to recruit and train your apprentice. Here some of

the employers we have worked with talk about the

experience they have had with Newcastle City Learning.

Newcastle City Learning did all the

preliminary stages of recruiting an

apprentice for us so we could

concentrate on the crucial interview

stage. I am delighted to say NCL

provided us with an impressive selection

of candidates from which we were able

to appoint an outstanding apprentice.

Our new apprentice has very quickly

proved to be a highly valued and

effective addition to our workforce. I

would have no hesitation in

recommending NCL to anyone needing

an apprentice.”

Ken Etherington, School Business

Manager, Kibblesworth Academy.

Newcastle City Learning took the pain out

of recruiting our apprentices. The account

manager and her team made the process

simple from start to finish. They did the

recruiting and pre-interviewed potential

candidates so that they met our criteria for

what we were looking for. All we had to do

was put some time aside for the interviews.

Once we chose our apprentices NCL then

put a plan together for the length of the

apprenticeship. During the entire

programme they not only supported our

apprentices but also most importantly

supported us.

Taking on apprentices is not an easy task

but NCL made the task easier so that it

had a positive effect on our business.”

Michael McMeekin, Director,

Arrow Sales

"Newcastle City Learning has been the

perfect way to recruit an apprentice. As

the standard of applicants was so high

we took on both candidates we

interviewed. This has worked out really

well as we have two practices that they

have had the opportunity to work at,

gaining different experiences at each

one. Newcastle City Learning have made

regular contact with us throughout the

year and have always been available for

help and advice when needed. Due to

the whole process being so successful

we have recruited again."

Susan Wheatley, PA, Cruddas Park and

Hillsview Surgeries

“The team at Newcastle City

Learning were extremely supportive

in helping us find the right

Apprentice to join our team at Crisis

Skylight Newcastle. They guided us

through the process and were able

to answer all of our queries.

Our apprentice has made such a

difference to our team and has

exceeded all of our expectations.

It’s been a pleasure to work with

such a motivated and enthusiastic

young person, so much so that they

now have a full time permanent

position with us.”

Angela Patterson,

Learning Manager, Crisis

“I have been delighted by the service I

have received through the Newcastle

City Learning Apprenticeship Scheme.

This is the first time we have offered an

apprenticeship and the calibre of

applicants and the support given by NCL

resulted in us being unable to choose

between two applicants and offering

both candidates an employment

opportunity.

I would have no hesitation in using

Newcastle City Council for my next

round of recruitment, it has been a very

positive experience.”

Claire Taylor, Director Children’s Services,

Footsteps Children's Services Ltd.

“When we first contacted Newcastle City Learning to find out about

apprentices and grants available they were very helpful. Both the information

they provided and support we have received has been second to none. There is

always someone there to answer a question, or point you in the right direction

if needed. The process was extremely easy from start to finish and the

apprentice we currently employ is a real asset to the business. She is learning

new skills all the time and putting these skills into practice within the business.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this service to anyone.”

Beth Sheppard, Payroll and Benefits Manager, Archial NORR

“At Parkway Medical Group we were reviewing

our staffing structure, and we made the decision

to give young people the opportunity of job

experience. We didn’t make the decision lightly,

we wanted to ensure the training programme

that we had at Parkway was first class to ensure

the new recruit/s would get the best possible

start to their career.

Newcastle City Learning played a big part in

ensuring we recruited the correct type of

person suitable to the role we had available.

NCL came and spoke with us, finding out about

the team, the practice and what our ideal

candidate requirements would be. Newcastle

City Learning did all the behind the scenes

work ensuring that they offered only the most

suitable candidates for interview. I was offered 6 candidates and I

have to say the standard was high and all were extremely willing to work and learn.

I did originally only have one vacancy available, it was a very hard decision and I did

eventually take on 2 apprentices.”

Donna Aydon, Practice Manager, Parkway Medical Group

“Blakelaw Ward Community Partnership

have received excellent support from

Newcastle City Learning with our

apprentice studying the Business

Administration course. She is currently

working through the National

Vocational Qualification units.

Our apprentice has shown a great

attitude to work and her tutor is

certainly providing the foundation for

us to make the placements a success.”

Glenn Pendleton, Executive Manager,

Blakelaw Ward Community Partnership

“At my current workplace at the

Beacon in Newcastle I became aware

of the benefits that their apprentice

offered to the reception facility and

came into contact with Elaine

Withycombe, Employment and Skills

Coordinator at Newcastle City

Learning. My initial reaction was like

“stepping into the deep end” but

Elaine carefully and professionally

led me through the procedure, so

the whole process was in fact quite

painless. The end result has been the

introduction into my company of an

exceptional young apprentice who I

am sure will benefit from his time

with us. A heartfelt thank you to

Elaine and her colleagues”

Graham Brewis, Director, Clean

Slate Financial Wellbeing Services
