UNICORNS CHAMPIONSHIP

Bucks v Hertfordshire

at High Wycombe on Sunday-Tuesday June 7th-9tH

Bucks won by 6 wkts Toss won by Bucks

Bucks started their campaign in sensational style with a record-breaking six-wicket victory. Set an enormous 490 to win on

the final day after being thoroughly outplayed, Bucks cruised home with more than an hour to spare, thanks to a doublecentury

from debutant Tom Smith. It is believed to be the highest successful run chase in Minor Counties history.

Smith, a 27-year-old left-arm spinner who is on Gloucestershire’s books, scored 244 not out as Bucks made 490-4 in 91.2

overs. It is the highest ever made by a Bucks batsmen in their 120-year history. His runs came off only 261 balls with eight

sixes and 31 fours. Shaan Khan, contributed 147 to a third-wicket stand of 255. He batted for 149 balls and hit a six and 21

fours.

It was Hertfordshire, who set the records on the first day, racing to 487-2 in their 90-over allocation after being put in to bat.

Opener Ed Ballard (248no) and Tanweer Sikander (209no) produced an unbroken 431 for the third wicket, the highest ever

stand in Championship history .

Bucks replied with 290 all out. Herts, to their regret, did not enforce the follow on and declared their second innings on

291-7.

This left Bucks an ‘impossible’ target of 490 ‘ - but they achieved the impossible. In perfect batting conditions, the three days

produced 1559 runs for 23 wickets.

Cambridgeshire v Bucks

at Wisbech on Sunday-Tuesday June 21st-23rd

Bucks won by 3 wkts Toss won by Cambridgeshire

For the second successive match, Bucks came back to win after conceding more than 400 runs on the first day.

High Wycombe seamer Jonathan Burden (5-54) played the key role as Cambridgeshire who had obtained a first-innings

lead of 45, slipped to 161 all out in their second knock.

Needing 227 for victory, Charlie Macdonell, who was unluckily out for 99 in the first innings, scored 63.

With the match delicately balanced at 158-6, Dan Hampton and Matt Rance saw Bucks home with three wickets and four

overs to spare. Bucks gave a Championship debut to Uxbridge left-arm spinner Marwan Mohammed.

Come-back kings Bucks went top of the table with third win in as many matches – and in each of them, they were outplayed

on the first two days. Bucks, having been 121 runs behind on first innings, were set a target of 352 for victory on the final day,

and got home with eight wickets and ten overs to spare with a remarkable score of 352-2.

Hero of the hour was the Tring Park batsman Shelvin Gumbs. Playing only his third Championship match, Gumbs scored 132

UNICORNS CHAMPIONSHIP

Northumberland v Bucks

at Jesmond on Sunday-Tuesday July 19th-21st

Northumberland won by 143 runs Toss won by Bucks

After three successful run chases, Bucks this time collapsed on the final day. Northumberland rattled up 429-8 from their 90

overs on the first day, despite excellent bowling from Dan Hampton (5-93). Shaan Khan and Charlie MacDonell put on 153

for the first wicket in Bucks reply before they declared 89 runs behind. Bucks were eventually set a victory target of 362, but

after another good start by the openers, there followed another collapse and they were all out for 218.

Bucks v Lincolnshire

at Tring Park on Sunday-Monday August 2nd-3rd

Bucks won by 6 wkts Toss won by Lincolnshire

Bucks won in two days to keep alive their title hopes. In a low-scoring match, the decisive spell came from High Wycombe

seamer Jonathan Burden, who took 5-44 in the second innings, as Lincolnshire, who held a first-innings lead of 12 were

shot out for 148. Bucks reached their target of 161 comfortably thanks to an unbeaten 66 from Horton House’s consistent

Charlie Macdonell. Jack Scriven, son of former Bucks captain Tim, bagged a pair on his Championship debut.

UNICORNS CHAMPIONSHIP

Staffordshire v Bucks

at Knypersley on Sunday-Tuesday August 16th-18th

Staffordshire won by 255 runs Toss won by Staffordshire

Bucks finished runners-up in the Eastern Division of the Unicorns Counties Championship following their heavy defeat. Hopes that

Bucks would top the table and so the challenge for the Championship had already been dashed by leaders Cumberland’s two-day

trouncing of Cambridgeshire. Bucks reduced the hosts to 74-5 on the first morning, but a century from Tim Maxfield, who shared

a ninth-wicket stand of 102 for the ninth wicket with Paul Byrne, turned the tide. Bucks’s a weakened batting line-up, struggled to

156 in their first innings. Staffordshire’s second innings was dominated by skipper Kadeer Ali - brother of England star Moin - who

hammered 150 from 162 balls as they rattled up 357-3 dec. Set a target of 469 for victory, Bucks were bowled out with three

overs left. Dan Hampton was left stranded on 64 not out, having batted 166 balls in a vain attempt to save the game.

Bucks v Staffordshire

at High Wycombe on Sunday April 19th

Staffordshire won by 7 wkts Toss won by Bucks

Bucks did well to recover from 56-4 to 284 all out. They were rescued by skipper Michael Payne, who made 96 off 113

balls with eight fours and two sixes. He was given good support by Jack Scriven, son of former Bucks captain Tim, and then

by Dan Hampton, whose 59 off 43 balls. Staffs side were guided to victory by a century from Kadeer Ali, brother of England

Test star Moeen, who scored 106 off 119 balls, as they won with 4.2 overs to spare.

UNICORNS KO CUP

Berkshire v Bucks

at Wokingham on Sunday April 26th

Berkshire won by 25 runs Toss won by Berks

A tight spell from the 49-year-old Simon Stanway, who conceded only 18 runs in his ten overs, kept Berkshire in check

before the hosts accelerated to 238-6 thanks to a century from Michael Roberts, who scored 101 off 136 balls. Bucks

slumped to 42-4 in reply, opener Matt Watson making his second successive duck as Bucks. A super stand of 142 between

Hamzah Riazuddin and Dan Hampton, whose 77 came off just 84 balls with three sixes, gave Bucks renewed hope, but their

dismissals ended their chance and they finished on 213-7.

UNICORNS KO CUP

Bucks v Oxfordshire

at Wormsley on Sunday May 3rd

Oxfordshire won by 8 wkts Toss won by Oxfordshire

Bucks never recovered after slipping to 43-5 in seamer-friendly conditions having lost an

important toss. Following a long interruption after a thunderstorm, Bucks eventually made

152-8 from a reduced 35 overs, recovering partially thanks to Bucks recovered partially thanks

to a seventh-wicket stand of 59 between Dan Hampton, and Matt Rance. Oxon, whose original

Duckworth/Lewis target of 148 from 35 overs was further reduced by bad light to 128 from 31

overs, eventually got home with 16 balls to spare. It was a privilege for Bucks to host this game

at the late John Paul Getty’s Wormsley ground, near Stokenchurch. Indeed, but for the ground’s

superb covers and equipment, the game would probably have been washed out..

Bucks seemed in trouble at 36-3, but Michael Payne, with support from opener Robin

Pritchard and debutant Jack Scriven halted the slide. At 158-7, Bucks were still not out of the

always struggling against a ten-man Bucks attack, in which off-spinner Rance collected 2-5

in his four overs. At 134-9, the game was all over, but the Aston Rowant captain Wes Morrick
