Andy Kelly writes for us again this month about the Irish 

Band that he put together last year called ‘The Scattering’ 

who made their debut at the Flying Horse on St Patricks 

Night 2015 – as if he wasn’t busy enough!! Since then the 

band have gone from strength to strength, headlining both 

Saturday night gigs at the Manchester International Irish 

Festival in Albert Square. 

by so many local residents lining the streets to watch the 

Parade and attend the fete at Milnrow Memorial Park.

takes place on 11th June. Now in its 48th year, excitement

Carnival and Summer Fete 

Excitement is mounting throughout the borough in anticipation of the Milnrow & Newhey Carnival and Summer 

Fete set for Saturday 11th June 2016. The event is enjoyed by many people each year, who line the streets to watch 

the parade and attend the summer fete afterwards at Milnrow Memorial Park. 

The carnival committee aim to maintain tradition, contributing their time 

voluntarily to organise a village carnival, which is now in it’s 48th year. 

The event brings together the local community with a procession from 

Newhey to Milnrow and is followed by a fete with stalls and activities. 

We encourage Rochdale’s residents to participate, by promoting the event 

in the months preceding each 

year’s summer carnival. 

Local groups can make their 

presence known and 

relationships are forged. 

Children and adults alike 

dress in fancy-dress and a 

fun day is had by all. The 

event is promoted 

throughout the local 

press and online and 

projects a positive 

image of Rochdale 

from within. 

The parade starts at 

1pm at Haugh Lane, 

Newhey. The parade 

proceeds down 

Huddersfield Road, turns 

right towards Milnrow, 

up Newhey Road, 

continues through 

Milnrow, turns left onto 

Station Road, past Holroyds and then turns right onto Dale Street. It 

continues up through Milnrow and terminates at Milnrow Memorial Park 

for a Summer Fete. 

In addition to the above, 

the committee is delighted 

to announce that Oldham 

& District Mini Club will 

be taking part in the 

parade. Oldham & 

District Mini Club has 

been established since 

1994 and is a family 

friendly club that has 

a passion for all 

things MINI. Their 

members come from all 

over the North West and 

their ages range from 

those who have just 

recently become qualified 

drivers to those old enough 

to know better! Their club is 

open to both classic and 

modern Mini owners alike, in 

fact, you don't even have to 

own a mini to want to be able 

to join; you just need to have a fascination for Minis. If you would like

Another exciting addition to the parade this year will be a fleet of bubble 

cars! These cars are on tour in the area and we are privileged to have 

them in this year's parade. The group attend rallies and shows all over 

the country and are covered in classic car magazines, books, photo shoots 

and interviews. If the BBC and ITV are short of news they often include 

the cars or the show in the "round up section news" for our area. 

There is no theme to the event but in recognition of the Queen's 90th 

birthday we are asking groups to incorporate red, white and blue into 

their decorations and/or costumes. 

Milnrow Brass Band will lead the parade, with the Mayor and Mayoress 

of Rochdale. Local schools are once again supporting the event with 

entries received so far from Crossgates Primary School, Moorhouse 

Primary School, Newhey Community Primary School and St Thomas C of 

E Primary School. Entries have also been received from Milnrow Cricket 

Club Juniors, Milnrow Pre-School, Milnrow Morris Troupe, Loud Studios, 

Rochdale Heartbeat and Captain Jack Sparrow look-a-like with many more 

groups yet to confirm. 

The cars will be on display at the Milnrow Memorial Park after the parade 

and this is something not to be missed. Entry is free to the park where 

there will be live music with DJ, a funfair for all ages, paintball, a variety 

of stalls and hot and cold food. 

Last year we had a record number of entries in the parade and a 

thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all. The rain held off and the sun 

came out to everyone's amazement and the sense of camaraderie and 

goodwill in the village was evident as the local community came out to 

support the day.

The date for the next Milnrow, Newhey & Firgrove Local Area Forum 

is yet to be confirmed.Please do not hesitate to contact your Local

Guided Walks & Tours 

The Syke Walk and Talk Group meet every Monday at 1.00 pm 

and Friday 10.00am at Syke Methodist Chapel where there will be 

toilet facilities and hot drinks and socialising after the walks. There 

are 2 levels on the walk on Monday, a high quick walk and a slower 

one. There are also three levels on a Friday. A high fast walk, an 

intermediate walk and a slower one if needed. So there is something 

to suit everyone and all abilities. 

Rochdale Ladies Lifeboat Guild Afternoon Tea – Wednesday 

20th April. Rochdale Ladies Lifeboat Guild Afternoon Tea to be held 

at Rochdale Town Hall Wednesday 20th April 2016 2.30 p.m until 4 

p.m. Tickets £7.00 on the door. 

Turin Shroud Exhibition at Saint Georges Church, Oakenrod – 

22nd April – 26th April. Saint George’s church, Oakenrod, is 

hosting the famous Turin Shroud Exhibition on its first visit to 

Rochdale. The exhibition contains a full-size replica (one of only six 

in the world) of the Turin Shroud, believed by many academics to be 

the burial shroud of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion. It is open from 

Friday 22nd April until Tuesday 26th, weekdays 1pm until 7pm, 

Saturday 10an until 4pm and Sunday 1pm until 4pm. Admission is 

entirely free and will be of interest to people of any faith – or none.

Rochdale Antique Society 

Rochdale Antiques Society meets at St Vincent's Hall, Caldershaw 

Road, Norden, OL12 7QL at 7.30pm on 2nd Wednesday in the 

month from September to May. Membership is £25 for the season,

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS/ADVICE – MESSAGE FROM YOUR LOCAL POLICE FORCE 

We are continuing to build on the excellent partnership 

work that is currently underway and remain committed 

to being proactive when engaging with our community 

and tackling any issues. 

Our neighbourhood priorities are not only to reduce crime and 

antisocial behaviour, but also to improve the service that 

people receive from the police. I am proud to lead a 

committed team of officers who work hard to keep our local 

community safe and who strive to deliver safe and effective 

policing that addresses the needs of the community. 

Most car thieves are opportunistic, and there are simple steps 

you can take to ensure your vehicle is not targeted. When you 

leave your vehicle, remove any valuables out of sight or 

completely remove them from your vehicle by taking them 

with you. Please check when locking your doors and close all 

windows. Check them manually – automatic locking devices 

can suffer from interference. 

We continue to tackle burglaries in your area, research into 

offences shows the below advice will help reduce the chance of 

you becoming a victim of burglary. 

Offenders are mainly entering houses through ground floor 

rear windows / doors - some of these have 

been windows left open, if you are out or 

in another room close your windows & 

doors. 

Items from the garden are being 

used to aid the offenders, so far we 

have - Wheelie bins, garden rakes, 

garden chairs that have been used - if 

you have a shed please use & 

lock it keeping these 

items out of sign & 

mind of would be 

thieves. 

Some homes have been successful in disrupting offenders by 

having a working house alarm that is set while the occupants 

are out or in bed - each crime reported over the period 

researched shows where a house alarm has been set off the 

offenders haven't managed to gain access & have left with 

nothing. 

Your local Policing team and partner agencies such as the 

Council and Housing regularly hold local PACT meetings, 

where you as a local resident can come along and have your 

say, where you can express your opinion of any issues you 

think are troubling the local community. I would urge you to 

pop down.

Everyone’s a little bit Irish (sort of) 

Andy Kelly reflects on a ten day long St Patrick’s day 

About eighteen 

months ago I 

decided to scratch 

an itch that had 

been bothering me 

for a while, and 

started to put 

together an Irish 

band. Some of my 

earliest memories 

at home were 

listening to The 

Dubliners, The 

Clancy Brothers 

and Johnny Cash as Country and Irish 

were pretty much the entirety of my 

Dad’s record collection. In my teens and 

early 20s, I was greatly influenced by 

The Pogues so somewhere in my head I 

have this back catalogue music that has 

come out of, or been influenced by the 

Emerald Isle. But would there be a 

market for this sort of thing today. The 

answer seems to be firm “Yes”. 

The Scattering made their debut at The 

Flying Horse on St Patrick’s Night 2015 

and have not looked back. The six piece 

band is made up of drums, bass, two 

guitars, accordion and violin/mandolin. 

It’s the latter two combinations that give 

the band its distinctive sound along with 

some close three part vocal harmony. 

About a third of the songs The Scattering 

play are traditional Irish songs, played in 

a rocked up style- standards like Irish 

Rover, Belle of Belfast City, Black Velvet 

Band, Fields of Athenry and the like are 

all on the set list. There’s a fair slice of 

more modern Irish artists- U2, Thin Lizzy, 

The Saw Doctors and The Pogues; and 

the rest is an eclectic mix of Country, 

Reels, Punk, Pop and Folk all delivered 

with The Scatterings unique sound. 

Twelve months later and this Rochdale 

based band have headlined both 

Saturday night gigs at the Manchester 

International Irish Festival in Albert 

Square. Originally meant to be a 

weeklong event, the festival was extended 

this year to cover two weekends where 

the band played to well over a thousand 

people. 

All of the band members make their 

living through music in one way or 

another as music tutors, classroom 

teachers, managers and facilitators and 

playing in The Scattering provides a 

performance outlet for some very 

talented local musicians. Throughout the 

rest of the year, the band have regular 

slots at both the Flying Horse Hotel in 

Rochdale 

and the 

Horse and 

Farrier pub 

in Norden. 

(It’s all 

very 

horsey!) 

They have 

host of other 

engagements both 

private and public 

and have been asked 

back to the Irish 

festival in 2017. 

The name by the way 

has a double 

meaning, referring to 

both the farming 

method of scattering 

wheat or corn, and a 

name given to the 

Irish people scattered 

or displaced across the globe. What is 

unbelievable is that with the exception of 

myself (and I claim dual Anglo Irish 

heritage!) none of the band members 

have any direct Hibernian heritage. 

Somewhere in most of their ancestry it 

exists though so hence being a little bit 

Irish…

Letter

The nearest secondary school to us here in Llandudno is called 

John Bright School; so why on earth is a school in Llandudno (and 

a leisure centre) named after one of the most famous people ever 

to be born and die in Rochdale? 

The only other named memorial for him 

is John Bright Street in Birmingham, 

where he was an MP for a time, so that 

makes sense, but why Llandudno? I 

cannot do this article without a bit of a 

history lesson, but be amazed! John 

Bright was born in Rochdale in 1811, 

the son of a mill owner; his is the 

“other” statue in Albert Square and he 

first coined the modern meaning of 

the phrase “flogging a dead 

horse” and the phrase “mother 

of all parliaments”. MP for 

both Birmingham, Manchester 

and Durham in his time he was 

a famous orator and most well 

known for helping to repeal the 

Corn Laws (a law introduced in 

1815 that imposed high import 

duty on grain and pushed food 

prices sky high in times of grain 

shortages and especially the 

1845 and 1846 famine). He also 

did more than any other man to 

prevent the intervention of 

Britain on the side of the South 

during the American Civil War, 

and did loads of other really 

reforming stuff. So he was a 

fantastic and really important guy.

He married and had seven children, and here we 

come to the connection. Llandudno was a very 

popular holiday resort by 1864 and this is 

where John Bright brought his wife and 

youngest son Leonard in that year. Llandudno 

is named for St Tudno who built a church on 

the Great Orme in 544AD and there is still a 

church here today in an incredible setting 

overlooking the sea and distant mountains. It 

was a popular attraction then as it is now 

and five year old Leonard Bright was moved to say as 

they walked through the churchyard “Mamma, 

when I am dead, I want to be 

buried here”. The tragedy is that 

he almost immediately 

contracted scarlet fever and died, 

so just one week later he was, 

indeed, buried in this churchyard 

in Llandudno. 

After this John Bright visited 

Llandudno at least once every year 

up to his own death and helped fund 

the school which, though rebuilt in 

2004, still bears his name. As late as 

1997 there are references to flowers 

appearing on the grave, but the sorry 

state we found it in for this 

article has moved me to try 

and do something about this 

important local landmark, so 

watch this space!
