Reflections from Nashville
To Nashville 2015
6/21/2015
We wrapped up the week at LYSO, which stands for Lutheran Youth Serve Omaha at Kountze
Lutheran Church in Omaha. The girls were attending the program, I led music, and Matt and
the crew from Table Grace cooked and served the meal on Friday. We loaded our car between
the hours of 5a-7am, so that we were ready to head toward Nashville by 12:30pm once we were
done at Kountze.
So on down the road we went, packed to the brim. This is a new era in the family life of the
Webers; both girls are now at the age where a bag of chapter books, a coloring book, some
colors, a couple of CDs, and snacks were enough for a 12 hour car ride. Amazing! Friday evening
we stopped at Boonville for the night, due to the forecast, which was predicting downpour
rain, that would eventually flood the area. At this point in our lives, we have driven through
enough of those downpours to know that it really isn’t worth the stress, plus we were tired.
Saturday we drove for another six hours, and arrived in Nashville a little before it was
time to eat dinner. Very excited girls bounded out of the Subaru Forester “we’re finally here!”
So indeed, we are finally here. The day is less than 24 hours away that we have been
working toward for essentially four years. Songs written, producer chosen and met, funds
raised. Dreaming of the vision for the Table Grace album, and trusting ever more that it is God
leading in His timing that has brought us to this juncture.
Tomorrow we will all head to the studio with producer Dennis Dearing and musicians,
Mark Burchfield (Bass), Tom Hemby (Guitars), Paul Nelson (Cello), Scott Williamson (Drums),
Scott Brasher (String Arrangements), Bret Teegarden (Engineer).
The day in the studio tomorrow will be spent on 8 songs, recording the piano, guitar, bass
and drums, with what is called a scratch vocal over the top to guide what we do with the
instrumentals. Scratch just means it is not the final vocal. Stay tuned for more info as the
recording journey continues. Thank you for your support and prayers!
Happy Father’s Day to all!!

Reflections from Nashville
Day 1 Watershed Studio, Nashville
6/23/2015
We arrived at Watershed recording studio at about 9:15am Monday morning. What a
beautiful studio, and a fantastic team of musicians, engineer, and producer. Producer Dennis
Dearing assembled a team that included Scott Williamson on drums, Mark Burchfield on Bass
(also the owner of the studio), Tom Hemby on guitars, and engineer Bret Teegarden. Between
these guys they have played alongside Lady Antebellum, Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, Blake
Shelton, Mandisa, Faith Hill and now Simone Weber =).
I enjoy playing and singing music in multiple environments, with varying levels of talent
around me. The day I spent in the studio with these guys will go down as one of great
enjoyment of the craft of music. They are studio musicians, so that was simply another day at
the office for them, for me it was incredibly enjoyable to hear their stories of the music scene
in Nashville, hear their expertise on their instruments, and play along on songs that I have
written.
The studio was set up in sections. I was in the sound proof piano room, with a beautiful
grand piano. Tom, the guitar player was in the sound proof guitar room with his 18 guitars
(That might be a slight exaggeration, Matt might remember how many he actually had), and the
drummer and bass player were set up in the same room. To start each song they would gather
around the piano to hear one run through of me playing and singing the song we were about to
record, they would talk amongst themselves about what to put where musically and
rhythmically, and how to shape the song, with Dennis’ direction of course. And then Scott, the
drummer, would count us off and we would play/sing it through one time. After that time, we
would play about one more time altogether, and then usually the drummer was done unless he
wanted to add an auxiliary instrument. The bass player would fix a thing or two, the guitar
player would add another layer of guitar with a different guitar, or add another part here or
there, and they’d have me play one or two more times on the piano, and we would be onto the
next song.
The trickiest part of recording for me, even in this case where we are essentially playing
as a band, but isolated in our own booths (listening on headphones to each other) is playing
with a click track. When playing live, the group plays together speeding up and slowing down
as a song dictates. However, in the studio, the click track rules the day. So once we capture
the center of the tempo, that is the tempo, unless there is a ritardando at the end, in which
case they cut the click track and you get to just play.
Day 1 Watershed Studio, Nashville (continued)
6/23/2015
A couple high points of the day were hearing Dennis get super excited about the song “I
wonder” (especially the part that has the 4 beat pause, before hitting the musical theme strong
at the end) and the song “There will be air”. Also hearing one of the guys say “we don’t hear
chords like these around here very much, usually we are playing I-IV-V, all day long”.
We shared the story of Table Grace and how that is the driving force in this project. Here
are a couple of their reactions….
Scott, the drummer, said, “I am crazy about this concept that you guys have come up with and am
dying to go to the restaurant. Excited to be a part of the project. “ “Really excited to be a part
of the music that is being birthed out of the idea that God has laid on your heart. “ He spent
about 3 years recently on the road with “Smitty” Michael W. Smith, so that was fun to hear
about.
Mark Burchfield, the bass player said “It was great that you brought us in to help see this
through to fruition. We get to be a part of this ministry. I want to keep up with Dennis on how
it is going to build and support the ministry of Table Grace. “
A special thank you to all family, friends and community at Table Grace, Morning Star Lutheran
Church, and in and around the great state of Nebraska! We couldn't be doing this without the
support, generosity and prayers that you send our way. Peace and love to you all.

Reflections from Nashville
Hope and Alexandra's Debut
6/25/2015
Hope and Alexandra started the day with recording their cherub vocal parts to He will save
and Come to me. The tears welled up in our proud parental eyes as we heard their beautiful
crystal clear voices. In an instant a flash of memories flooded through my head as I recalled
singing as a child and watching adults cry, wondering what they were so sad about, I was just
singing (now I totally get it), then the next flash was the day the girls were born, and flash
forward to now. How on earth has this circle of life come this far? I mean some days I know
exactly how it has, with each moment stacked on another moment, each meal fades into
another meal, each day turns around another time. And yet, when we are gifted with a
heavenly moment in time as we were today, to be realizing a life long dream of mine to be
recording in this way, with our dear beloved growing daughters. What a blessed slice of
heaven right here in Nashville. There is nothing quite like hearing a 7 year old singing the
words “The gift of love and gift of grace is there for everyone”. Or a 5 year old singing “…He is
such a precious baby coming to this world to save “.
As they were wrapping up their part of the session, they stood in the kitchen corner
making their own hot chocolate in the studio keurig, and grabbing their second york
peppermint patty which they had held out for to consume after they were done singing their
parts. Hope gathered her things and came over to me and said, “This is like Christmas; drinking
hot chocolate, eating peppermint and singing a Christmas song.’ To which I thought, yes, this is
just like Christmas! Merry Christmas everyone!

Day 2 Piano. Day 3 Vocals
6/27/2015
If you have been reading all week, you may realize at this point I am backtracking a bit. I skipped
day 2 and 3, because day 3 was so exhausting, all I could think about was resting that day when
we were done in the studio.
So here is day 2 and 3.
To begin the morning, I felt much more relaxed about the day. The simple task for the day
was to arrive at the studio and record 4 piano tracks, which basically means my part that is
played on piano (without vocals). The drive itself was interesting as the studio was situated in
the countryside on a hill, surrounded by beautiful rolling hills and trees. As I got there and
settled in a bit I learned that the piano I was recording on that day was the one sought after
by local talent such as Michael W. Smith. The piano booth was tucked inside of the studio and
felt quite peaceful. So we began, the girls and Matt took photos and video and then headed on
their way. We had a 3 hour session booked that day, and flew through the recording of the 4
piano tracks in about an hour. At that point we decided to continue recording, as we had two
remaining hours in our session. I had the folder with about 5 more songs in it that I had
written (but was not planning to record), so I went ahead and played one after another.
I will stop here to say, our process on day 2 of tracking with me on solo piano was to play
and sing through it once (so that we had a “scratch” vocal track), and then go back and play
the piano about 2 more times. It was a pretty relaxed day.
At the end of our time there I chatted for a bit with Dennis and Brendan (the owner of
the studio and engineer for the day). He peppered me with questions about Table Grace and
wondered how we ever thought of such a thing and how we got started. He commented that it
must take quite a bit of faith to venture out in such a way to trust God to lead the way. Indeed
Brendan, it does.
Day 2 Piano. Day 3 Vocals (Continued)
6/27/2015
Day 3 (vocal day 1)
We arrived at the studio (Dennis’ studio in Franklin, TN) at about 10am. The four of us
shuffled into the sitting space, the girls found the water dispenser, and quickly located the
coffee/hot chocolate maker and york mints. They bumbled around a bit, we took some pictures,
were shown to the vocal booth (which is a little bigger than the size of a phone booth), and
began the first song of the day.
We started vocals on Fullness of God. Which I thought would be a fairly “easy” one to
start on since I’ve been singing it for years. It took about 3 hours to really get that song nailed
down on the vocals. Of course there was a certain perfection in tone, phrasing, sound, style
and technique we were both looking for in each phrase. And by that time it was lunch.
Needless to say, I was feeling a bit discouraged, because I was already a bit tired in my voice
after that and only had one of 13 songs done. You might say well you have an entire week to get
the rest of them recorded. But I was thinking if every song took me 3 hours and if every day I
was going to be as vocally tired as the first day, oh my!
We ate lunch and came back in to the studio. The good news was that I got through 3 songs
that afternoon. Each song was much smoother to complete than the first. I understood the
rhythm of vocal recording better. Basically I would sing through the song once. And then do
each verse about three times, each chorus about three times, and then do one full song one
more time. I also pretty much had figured out how to brighten the song to our liking with
style and technique, and I was much more comfortable in the space.
I left the studio that day pretty vocally exhausted. And even though I felt better about
getting through 4 songs in a day I was fearful that I had used too much of my voice in that first
day and still had the big ones to sing.
Luckily rest is like resetting your vocal energy center button, and by the time we arrived
at the studio at 10am on Thursday, I felt pretty much as good as new.

Day 5 and 6 Nashville
6/29/2015
O Holy Night was the focus of our morning. Knowing that would be a taxing song to sing
repeatedly, we planned for it to be first, and then the Cello player will be playing his part for
an hour or so. This afternoon Matt will come in to sing his vocal parts on the songs we have
done already.
After yesterday’s session, and again accomplishing the lead vocal parts on four songs, I
felt much better about the timing of how many songs we are doing per day, and much more like
this is a mountain that is climbable. While we do not yet know the date of the official release,
or even what the covers are going to look like (that is a project unto itself), It is good to be
over halfway through the recording of the songs. At moments like these it’s good to remember
that we are sort of on vacation, and enjoy that part of the journey too. Although I will say,
even though there have been moments, hours and even a day here and there that do feel mostly
like vacation, there has been enough stress and anxiety to pepper an entire year.
Reflections from Nashville
Day 5 and 6 Nashville (Continued)
6/29/2015
Day 6
On the drive to the studio today, the rain poured down. I knew driving here that today we
would start the day with the song “Longing and ache”. I was feeling well rested and ready to
tackle the song despite the hiccup in our process of moving from one hotel to another
yesterday. The one we were scheduled to stay in had a broken down pool when we arrived, and
so we hunted for something that had a working pool. Luckily the lobby had a TV, which
entertained the girls while we found something. The fact that we had to climb back into the
hot car and drive again in rush hour traffic was a small set back, however, peanut butter,
celery and bananas did well to remedy the discouraged 5 year old (celery was a stand in for a
knife, to spread the melted peanut butter on the banana, one bite at a time). With an hour delay
and arriving at the hotel just before the downpour, we settled in for the evening.
I recall very well the day that I wrote Longing and Ache last August. I had thought that by
then this recording that we are working on now would be well underway. And I knew at that
point that it would likely be another year and maybe longer before we got to the studio in
Nashville to really do this thing. At this point reflecting on that moment in time, I realize
that if I had recorded last summer the songs “There will be air” “Table Grace Café” “Longing and
Ache” and “Perfektion with a K” would not have made the cut, mostly because they hadn’t been
written yet. Chances are in the next year or more, there will be more songs too. But my point is,
in hindsight, I feel grateful that now is the time for recording, and that we have some new
material to add to the mix.
We wrapped the day on Saturday early, with one song left to record on Monday, as well as
Matt’s vocals and trumpet.

Reflections from Nashville
Day 7 Nashville
6/30/2015
Day 7 Nashville
It’s Monday, we had a great day of rest yesterday. We had the day off from recording.
Headed to downtown Nashville to enjoy the sights and sounds of a variety of live musicians’
music wafting out from every other venue on Broadway (in Nashville). We found our way to a
Nashville sign that we remembered from years ago, and took a new family picture there.
Today we will be venturing to the studio again, I will sing on the song “Walked anyway”
and then the remainder of the day will be spent on Matt’s singing and trumpet……..(later)
The day went extremely well. We wrapped everything up at about 5pm. It is such a relief
and joy that we have made it this far in the recording journey. Many of you that know me well
have been through seasons over the years when I have lost my voice. Since college there have
been a couple of weeks here and there where it just goes away for a while. I’d say of any anxiety
from this entire process that was the most prominent, because I have no control over when it
leaves me and when it returns. Recording in Nashville made it a very specific period of time to
work with in the studio and I have had low grade anxiety that my voice would leave me this
week for about a year. However, a week or two ago when both Alexandra and Hope got the
summer cold (and I thought oh here we go), I had decided that if we got here and the voice
disappeared, I would just fly back later and finish the vocals. (I had won a free plane ticket at
the ALDE conference in Reno in February).
I am more than relieved that we got to this side of it and my voice was in the best
condition it could be. I appreciate all of you that were praying for our safety, our health and
the transformative impact of the music on the mission of Table Grace and all who experience
the music. It is really a gift of grace to see this dream becoming reality.
Thank you to the team at Morning Star for leading in our absence. I have heard reports that
you all did very well! Thank you again to Morning Star Lutheran, our home congregation in
Omaha for the support of Table Grace and our recording journey. We feel very blessed to have
you all along on this journey with us.
Thank you to the team at Table Grace who continues to be present in downtown Omaha
while we are on this journey. We appreciate you all very much!
In case you are still wondering when the recording will be ready to hear, keep this in
mind. We don’t even know for sure. Now that we have completed our recording, our producer,
Dennis, has some things to add, mixing to do, and then we send it to mastering. In the mean
time, we are going to be figuring out the cover art, and starting to think about a CD release
concert. It could be fall, could be Christmas, could be next Spring as we celebrate 5 years of
Table Grace Café. It all depends on how quickly these other pieces come together.
Thank you to Beverlee McCollum for typing my music notation into the music software.
Thank you to Ken Exner for covers and layout of the songbook.
