Seeking Participants for UCLA Research Study
on Long-Term Care
What is the purpose of the research? To learn about...
1. experiences between gay and lesbian (or non- heterosexual) older
adults and long-term care providers and
2. ideas about how long-term care providers can be responsive to lesbian
and gay older people.
Who can participate? Men who are at least 50 years old, have had
contact with long-term care providers, and EITHER:
• Identify as gay, OR BOTH
• have had only male sex partners over the past 20 years
• are only attracted to men
What does participation involve? If you volunteer for this study you will
be asked to participate in a one-on-one interview in which you will answer
questions about your experience of long-term care providers and ideas
about what it means for long-term care providers to be responsive to
lesbian and gay older adults. You will also be asked to provide feedback on
the researcher’s analysis at a later date. You will be able to withdraw from
the study at any time with no penalty. Each participant will receive $40. You
do NOT need to travel to UCLA to participate.
JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore
Welcome to Jersey’s Journal. Because
it’s titled Jersey’s Journal, which gives
me the right to write whatever is
hanging off of my nose. Lately, and
much too often, people like to voice
their opinions thanks to this thing
we call social media. They write
about how there are two sides to
every story, but if you don’t believe
their side of the story, then you are
wrong. The new trend is unfriending
someone who supports a presidential
candidate that isn’t their own choice.
That’s pretty idiotic, ya think? I like
vanilla ice cream, are you going to
unfriend me?
What I write about is my side of a
random situation. It’s not even a true
story. A Fab-rication. It’s what we do;
exaggerate the truth to prove a point.
It has to be driven into thick skulls
so over emphasis is high priority
these days. So, for the vain, insecure,
ridiculous, bottom feeders: You can
stop thinking that every word I write
is about you. It’s never about you. I
don’t sit around wondering about
you. I know how you are and I don’t
care. I will continue to concentrate
on myself and the few good people in
my life. I will be creating positive energy
and eliminating the negativity.
Good things happen with a positive
attitude. I say that every week, so if
you are an avid opinionated person,
then get your own article. Or try too.
Write to all those fabulous, lovely,
uninterested people.
Okay, I’m done! I’ll wipe myself and
get off the pot because I can only
stand so much useless shit for so
long! I just flush once to conserve
water.
ART AND WAR A JOURNEY TO HEALING THROUGH
CREATING
Brian Rock was one of the exhibiting artists
mentioned in last week’s article on the Indian
Wells Art Fair.
Brian grew up in Belfast, Ireland during
some of the most violent, tumultuous times
in the conflict in that country.
He was wounded during the sectarian violence
there and then moved to the United
States in 1998. He joined the U.S. Military
as a way to give back to his newly adopted
country. He served during three major
operations, including overseas service. This
left him with additional scars and dealing
with post traumatic stress after leaving
the military in 2013. He has since been
painting and sculpting as a way to help him
alleviate the violent memories and anger of
participating in the destruction and devestation
of war
Brian self discovered art to help him respond
to the chaos of war that haunted
him. One of his sculpture pieces
is a dramatic bronzed sculpture, in which
a human head wrapped in barbed wire, is
surrounded by the many pill bottles which
had contained the medications that were
not effective in his ptsd treatment.
His work is reflective of the destructive
power of IED’s and other weaponry of war
that maimed and killed children, adults and
veterans. He was completing a work at the
site of the Indian Wells Art Fair, a collage,
titled “Playground”. This was composed of
empty shell casings, soil, bits of fabric and
toys, and in the center a small red dress
entwined in barbed wire. This provided a
visually powerful work, dramatically portraying
the human destruction of war. Brian’s
work also includes paintings conveying
emotions of explosions through color and
composition.
His work has been recognized and collected
by a number of organizations and
individuals, including: Global Campaign
Against Improvised Explosive Devices, the
U.S. Veterans Artist Alliance, United States
Museum of the Army, Blinded Veterans
Association, Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull,
to name just a few.
Brian’s work is an example of art conveying
emotion while helping him to heal the
psychological wounds of war. He lives in
New Mexico where he maintains his studio
and continues to work, providing a message
to others
and as a therapy to himself.
Next week, another artist who has experienced
prison and exile to maintain her
creative work as an artist.
THAT IS FUNNY
Once a nun was taking a bath when someone knocked on the door,
“Who is it?”
“ It’s the blind man, can I come in?”
She decides to let him,
“Okay” she says, he walked in and says:
“Nice tits, now where do you want me to hang the blind?”
Q:What’s the difference between being hungry and horny?
A: Where you put the cucumber.
During a funeral, the pallbearers accidentally bump into a wall and hear a faint moan. They open the
casket and find out that the woman is actually alive.
She lives for 10 more years and then dies. There is another funeral for her. At the end of the service, the
pallbearers carry out the casket.
As they are walking out, the husband cries out, “Watch out for the wall!”
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
Welcome to the NEW last word. It is with
some trepidation that I follow my dear late
friend George Zander in authoring this column,
but I will strive to reach his high standards.
It is the season of joy, rebirth and of
course the high holy Gay days of spring; Cathedral
City’s LGBT Days, the White Party and all
that is Dinah Shore!
Cathedral City launched the festivities with
the opening and dedication of its new rainbow
crosswalk, in front of city hall and the iconic
Bell Tower. Interestingly, the crosswalk is at E.
Palm Canyon and George Montgomery Road.
Montgomery, local artist, sculptor and actor,
was married to Dinah Shore.
While this new “street tattoo” is designed to be
temporary, it seems fitting that the city with
the first Gay majority city council and home to
the valley’s first Gay Pride celebration 35 years
ago, would use its dedication to start its second
annual celebration of LGBT Days.
The weekend began with the obligatory cocktail
party on Festival Lawn near Bonta Restaurant
and the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus
in concert. Mayor Stan Henry welcomed the
crowd and issued a proclamation to Richard
Altman, owner of CCBC Resort as a LGBT
Ambassador to the community at large. A
raucous crowd of several hundred cheered,
groaned and cat called through “Rocky Horror
Picture Show” at the Mary Pickford Theater.
Saturday began with the costume bed race.
You can just imagine beds on wheels decorated
in fairy finest. The race winners were
those hunky providers of public health and
safety - the Cathedral City Fire Department!
In the afternoon we celebrated with a sold out
crowd to a champagne brunch and entertained
by the fabulous Coco Peru! And of course
the day couldn’t go with out an Easter Bonnet
Parade! The evening brought a packed house
to the Mary Pickford for a showing of Sordid
Lives, with the cast and director, Del Shores,
in attendance. For the less risqué members of
the community, Despicable Me was shown on
a giant outdoor screen with families of all ages
and sizes bursting Panorama Park to its seams.
Sunday was again a joyous family event with
the annual Easter egg hunt and once again the
city’s full diversity was on display. We wait to
see what Jeffrey Sanker has in store for us!
On a more serious note, we sadly saw Georgia’s
legislature pass virulent anti-LGBT legislation.
San Francisco promptly banned government
travel to the state and Disney launched an
entertainment boycott as well. At the writing,
it was just announced the Governor was going
to veto the bill but the damage is done. We
may have marriage, but we still have ignorance
and bigotry to fight against.
Even while we celebrate, always be vigilant. I
leave today for Bangalore, India. Homosexuality
is still illegal through the country. I’ll report
back what I see how our community is faring.
Celebrate and enjoy!
Greg Pettis is a 22 year old city councilman in Cathedral
City. He has made his name in governmental
circles as an expert in transportation issues and is
very active in working on bringing passenger rail service
to the COACHELLA Valley. Greg was the first
openly gay elected city council members In Riverside
County. He has served on the boards of the National
League of Cities and the League of California Cities
and as President of the Southern CA Association of
Governments.
