‘Doors Open
Riverside’ Offers
Tours Of Historic
Buildings
By Scott K. Watson, Assistant Planner
City of Riverside Historic Preservation Division
An international movement is coming to Riverside. The City of Riverside,
in partnership with the Old Riverside Foundation, the Riverside
Arts Council, the Riverside Downtown Partnership, and the Mission
Inn Museum and Foundation, are hosting the city’s first Doors Open event.
Doors Open Days began over 30 years ago in France and has since spread
across Europe, North America, and Australia. These events provide free access
to captivating historic sites that are often closed to the public. By opening
the doors to these architectural gems, event organizers hope to increase
awareness of historic architecture and the community’s collective heritage.
On Thursday, May 12th from 6pm to 9pm, fifteen buildings in downtown
Riverside are opening their doors. Guests will be taken on a riveting
tour of each exquisite building and will learn about each building’s intriguing
history. Be sure to stop by one of the six information stations located at: the
Main Library, Main and Mission Inn, Lemon and Mission Inn, Lemon and
University, Orange and University, and Mission Inn and Vine. A number of
downtown restaurants located in historic buildings will be offering specials
before, during, and after the tours.
Buildings that will be opening their doors include: Fox Theater, Metropolitan
Museum, Municipal Auditorium, First Church of Christ Scientist,
First Congregational Church, Universalist Unitarian Church, Riverside Art
Museum (former YWCA), the Life Arts Building (former YWCA), the RCC
Center for Social Justice and Civil Liberties (former Citrus Trust), the Culver
Center for the Arts (former Rouse Department Store), and the California
Museum of Photography (former Kress Department Store), the Arcade
Building occupied by Krieger & Stewart, Loft. 84 in the Aurea Vista Building,
the Bonnett Building, and the Old City Hall occupied by Tilden-Coil
HAVING IT ALL!
CIRCUS COUPLE FINDS
PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN
LIFE AND WORK!
FLYING HIGH! Yasmin Rivera balances family and work life, both at the circus.
With so many families having
both parents in the
work force, it can be quite
a challenge to balance the ongoing
responsibilities of work and home
life. The struggle between career and
being home for the kids has been
debated for decades. Most work
environments are not family friendly,
so how can some parents have their
cake and eat it too? Answer- Join the
circus!
Circus Vargas aerialist Yasmin
Rivera will tell you her family has
managed to find this happy balance.
“We are so lucky. We really do have
it all!” Despite what some might
consider the challenges, circus life is probably
the most family friendly work environment one
could ever imagine and their children are never
more than a stone’s throw away!
“It’s an ideal situation,” says Yasmin, “the
perfect work-life balance. Not only do we spend
quality time as a family, but we are literally
together most of the day on a daily basis and
because the show is made up of families, we
travel with our own school and teacher.” So
every morning Yasmin, husband Luis and their
young son and daughter wake up, have breakfast
as a family and then walk about 60 feet to the
schooltrailer. Then, with kids happily in school,
it is show-time and the couple focuses on
entertaining the throngs of spectators under the
Circus Vargas Big Top. After the first performance
which lasts just under two hours, the
kids are home for lunch. A quick kiss goodbye
and it’s back to the teacher for the second half of
their school day while Yasmin and Luis prepare
for the next performance.
“When the show is over we settle down for
dinner or go to a movie,” says Luis. On the
weekend the kids watch the show. They learn
early on, when the show is on mommy and
daddy are working. They can watch again and
again and never get bored. They love it. It’s
better than TV…it’s live entertainment and it’s
always exciting!”
Yasmin’s career as an aerialist is a dangerous
job, but the kids love to watch her perform.
They have also begun their circus training.
“They aren’t scared of anything,” laughs Yasmin.
“They love the circus, it’s their home.”
Luis, healing from a shoulder injury, quite
the common occupational hazard when you fly
on the trapeze for a living, has been working on
the ground behind the scenes as of late, a less
dangerous, but still important and often stressful
job. “I am with my family for every doctor
appointment, sick day, birthday, etc. Our work
schedule fits perfectly with whatever
life brings us. And the normal
stress everyone deals with at work,
we have too, but knowing you
don’t have the added stress and
guilt of missing family functions
or family time in general, makes
everything worth it.”
Both Yasmin and Luis come
from generations of circus
performers. “We feel lucky to be
able to raise our children in the
tradition and style that we were
raised. Coming from big tight-knit
families means our kids will always
have a fantastic support system of
many aunts, uncles and cousins!
And here on Circus Vargas we feel like family
so we have really the best of both worlds! We
travel, perform, live, love and laugh as one big
extended family.”
See Yasmin and the entire cast perform in
Circus Vargas’ 2016 Spectacular – iLUMIOUS,
an all-new, high-energy extravaganza! Boasting
death-defying stunts, high-flying aerialists, aweinspiring
acrobats, and hilarious clowns under
a music-filled, blue and yellow Big Top, Circus
Vargas’ iLUMINOUS will appear at three
Inland Empire locations from April 7 – May
9, including Temecula (April 7-18), Hesperia
(April 21-25), and Ontario (April 28 - May 9).
The animal-free circus offers a complimentary,
interactive preshow 30 minutes before
each performance, where children get to try
their hand at juggling, hula hooping, balancing,
clowning and much more. IER
A Place Like No Other
Where History and the Arts Flourish and the Experience Lasts a Lifetime!
THE RAMONA PAGEANT Kayla Contreras as Ramona and Joseph Valdez as Alessandro.
From the time it first began in 1923, California’s most incredible love
story, Ramona, has been performed in a unique and beautiful natural
setting at the Ramona Bowl Amphitheatre. The Ramona Bowl boasts
amazing acoustical properties and breathtaking natural beauty. That
combined with this enduring and compelling love story during an early
California in transition and you have an entertainment experience you will
never forget.
The Ramona Bowl is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon on any
spring day, but when the Ramona Pageant is being presented, it is even
more special. When coming to the pageant, allow time to drive through
the scenic countryside and arrive at the bowl as the gates are opening at
1:30pm. Although the play starts at 3:30pm there are many things to do
before the actual performance.
The courtyard of the Ramona Bowl features an outdoor stage where
dancers and singers entertain before the show. There are vendors and artists
in the courtyard and one can visit both the gift shop and the museum.
The museum is a must see with its exhibits from all the past Ramona’s
going back to 1923. There are examples of how Ramona has influenced
Ramona performs April 16-17, April 23-24, and April 30-May
1. For more information, call (951) 658-3111 or go online to
www.ramonabowl.com.
the history of California leading it to be a premier vacation spot as tourists
from the east wanted to experience the romance of the early California
missions, Native Americans and Mexicanos. The highlight of the museum
is a fresco done by Milford Zorne and his students. This is the only example
of a fresco ever done by famous mural painter Zorne.
If you are hungry before the show there are many delicious choices.
You can visit the Kiwanis BBQ, The Taco Man or the Ramona concessions
and eat in the courtyard and enjoy the shows. Or, you can wander up to
the Ramona Terrace and have a sit down lunch served as you look over the
most beautiful view of the valley. Enjoy a glass of wine as you listen to the
music and feel the light breeze in the shadowed spot.
This year the play will once again present the newer version of the play,
which was presented last year. The Board of Directors felt it was time to
update the script to include pieces of California History that people in
1923 were very familiar with but as time passed people had forgotten how
America had come to govern the area of California that had once been
part of Mexico.
Again this year the role of Alessandro is being played by Joseph Valdez
who did such a wonderful job last year. This year he is joined by Kayla
Contreras who is a local product, having reigned as Miss Hemet, but went
to Cal State Fullerton where she is pursuing a BFA in musical theatre. She,
too, is Native American and with Joseph they bring a portrayal of the star
crossed lovers that rings true in all aspects. IER
MainStreet Theatre Company is pleased
for Young Audiences premiere of
Mirette, with book by Elizabeth Diggs, music
by Harvey Schmidt and lyrics by Tom Jones.
Based on the Caldecott winning book by
Emily Arnold McCully, Mirette is the story
of a young girl in 1890’s Paris who convinces
a retired high-wire artist to teach her his
trade — and in turn teaches him to overcome
his own fear. Children as well as adults will
relate to the main character, who is trying to
figure out her place in the world. It’s a fresh
and unique coming-of-age story set in the
backstage world of the circus, which celebrates
both the joy, and the risks of being a performing
artist. School performances begin on April
18th, with the public opening on April 23rd.
The show runs until May 8th, 2016. Recommended
for ages 7 and up.
Elizabeth Diggs has revised her original
book for the musical, and this new version has
been pared down to one act, with a cast of 8
performers. Casey Stangl directs the Los Angeles
based cast which includes Aly Fainbarg
in the title role and Mark Doerr as Bellini, the
mysterious, retired high-wire walker with a secret.
Tracey A. Leigh, seen in last season’s The
Three Little Pigs, is Mirette’s practical mother,
Madame Gateau.
The rest of the cast play various “artistes”
who live in the boarding house run by Madame
juggler; Ann Marie Lee is Madame Rouspenskaya,
a Russian Opera singer; and brother and
sister Jonathan Christopher MacMillan and
Natalie Hope MacMillan play a pair of acrobats.
Arthur Hanket is Max, an impresario.
Thanks to a “Challenge America Grant”
from the NEA, MainStreet will host writer
Elizabeth Diggs during the rehearsal process,
and Rob Mermin, the founder of Vermont’s
Circus Smirkus, will also be on hand as the
Circus Consultant, lending an air of authenticity
to the proceedings. Musical Director Janice
‘Arabian
Nights’
and the Transformative
Power of Storytelling to
play at CSUSB
In winter 2016, Cal State San Bernardino’s theatre arts department
will present The Arabian Nights, by Mary Zimmerman, adapted from
The Book of a Thousand Nights and One.
This celebration of the transformative power of storytelling, directed
by Kathryn Ervin, CSUSB theatre arts professor, and music composed
by Allen Menton, assistant professor of music, opened in March at the
CSUSB Barnes Theatre. The play has moved to the Indian Wells Theater
at the Palm Desert Campus for two additional performances, April
9 and 10. The Arabian Nights is not recommended for anyone under the
age of 17.
This famous collection of stories spans many centuries and includes
literature and folklore from across Asia, the Middle East and North
Africa. This spellbinding adaptation offers a blend of lesser-known tales
using improvisation and movement to remind us all of the power of
stories to soften our hearts.
The Sultan Shahryar is heartbroken by his unfaithful wife. In an
infamous act of revenge he marries, loves, then kills his brides – until
the fateful day he weds Scheherazade, a clever young woman who delays
her death by intriguing the mad king with tales of laughter, love, lust,
sorrow and dreams. For 1,001 nights Scheherazade concludes one tale,
then begins a second one, prolonging her life in an attempt to sway her
husband’s cold heart.
Playwright Zimmerman is the renowned director and author behind
plays such as Journey to the West, Metamorphoses, Notebooks of Leonardo
da Vinci, Secret in the Wings, and Argonautika. She was the recipient of
the MacArthur Fellowship in 1998, and the winner of a Tony Award for
Best Direction in 2002 for her work on Metamorphoses. Her adaptation
of The Arabian Nights was completed in 1992, earning her a nomination
in 1994 for a Drama Desk Award (Outstanding Director of a Play).
Individual and season tickets can be purchased from the CSUSB
Artistic Director and full-time dance faculty, Michele Jenkins, choreographed
several of the dance works including a contemporary dance suite
paying tribute to Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas with music by
Danny Elfman; a funky jazz piece mixing humor, quirkiness, and high energy
with music by Infectious Grooves; an eccentrically playful and dark-humored
modern dance piece with music by David Bowie, honoring the extraordinary
innovator; and a contemporary ballet with an aura of otherworldly enchantment.
Kristin Rooney, Chaffey adjunct instructor, offers a contemporary
modern dance ensemble work that explores space and water-inspired fluidity,
and also from Kristin, a 1960’s Mambo-styled Salsa piece with elements of
Latin Jazz showcasing the percussive power and textures of Afro-Cuban and
African-rooted rhythms.
Chaffey adjunct faculty also include Paige Melvin, who provides an abstract
ballet-influenced contemporary modern dance that expressively portrays the
concept of resurrection with music by Dustin O’Halloran, and Diane Bonds,
who fuses contemporary hip hop and jazz funk dance styles with mainstream
hip hop music and an upbeat environmental mix of percussive rhythms.
Advanced student-choreography includes a modern dance/acrobatic visual
spectacle, and campy, dark-humored parody excerpts from the musicals Honk!
and Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Creating amazing scenic magic is intelligent lighting designer Guy Rock,
who returns to provide technical and dynamic lighting artistry and video imagery,
along with the talents of conventional lighting designer, Gary Reinschmidt.
Kaleidoscope 2016 runs April 28, 29 and 30 at 7:30pm and May 1 at 2pm
feeling of Fallbrook while enjoying over 450
booths and many other attractions, including
food courts that include some amazing avocado
foods.
Returning this year is Avocado Central,
located right in the middle of it all, at Main and
Alvarado Streets. Here you can learn about the
many avocado varieties, and even purchase the
prized fruit and plants to grow at home. This is
a “must visit” for the true avocado fan.
The Artisan Walk on Alvarado, a block-long
venue of local artisans displaying their unique
creations, is another popular side excursion at
the festival. Visitors are encouraged to visit this
24
area on Alvarado to enjoy their offerings.
Children’s activities abound, with contests
like the Avo 500 Races, Best-Dressed Avocado,
and the Little Miss and Mister Avocado
Contest. These take place at the Community
Stage on Main at Elder Street — a family-style
entertainment area. Another festival favorite
taking place at the Community Stage is the
Guacamole Contest (Professional and Amateur
categories). Awards and recognition are given for
the Best Tasting and Best Presentation in each
category. Judges include local “celebrities.” Local
talent and family entertainment performances
take place on the Community Stage throughout
the day in addition to the contests. There will
also be a Kids Carnival area that will be held in
the Joe’s Hardware parking lot, complete with
rides and games.
A shaded beer and margarita garden will host
all-day music provided by a variety of local musicians,
and will also be a place to sit and relax
for awhile. Entertainment schedules are posted
on the Avocado Festival page of the Fallbrook
Chamber of Commerce in early April.
Free parking, shuttles and admission help
make this a fun and entertaining family outing.
wish to control their destiny should
Best of all, indulging is guilt
free. With each bite of berry bliss
The formula has proved to be a
fruitful enterprise with more than
$4.5 million dollars benefiting a
multitude of southland charities
over the past decades.
Serving up wholesome family
fun while paying tribute to the
region’s rich agricultural heritage
and giving back, is what the Festival
is all about. “We work year round
for an event that takes place in 48
hours,” says California Strawberry
Festival Chairperson Kim Gibas.
“As volunteers, we’re committed
to hosting an exceptional celebration
that brings family and friends
together for a great time.” She adds,
“We strive to top the experience
year after year.”
May Seminar Promotes
Positive Changes In
Women’s Lives
Born from the idea to motivate women to make positive change in their
lives, Salud Integral de la Mujer (Comprehensive Women’s Health) has
touched hundreds of lives since its launch in 2014. Salud Integral de
la Mujer is a seminar that aims to teach women how to maintain harmony
between their physical, emotional, and mental health.
“We wanted to do something different that wasn’t just nutrition and
exercise,” said Elia Camarena, Co-founder of the event and Community
Outreach Worker at the Riverside Community Health Foundation (RCHF).
“We cover other areas that can help women to be their better selves and make
better decisions.”
The seminar takes place every year in May around Mother’s Day. Last
year, the topic was Discovering Your Potential. Participants were asked to
write something positive about themselves on a leaf-shaped paper and then
announce it to other participants before placing it on a Positivity Tree.
“It’s amazing how much some women struggle to find something positive
about themselves. But it’s necessary to see yourself that way,” said Carolina
Bojorquez, Co-founder of the event and Community Outreach Worker at
RCHF.
Salud Integral de la Mujer has grown from 50 to 75 participants in its first
two years with the hopes of breaking 100 in 2016. Women who attend the
“The thing that’s really important about this event is it’s for those women
feel heard and to listen to them,”said Carolina.
The seminar is hosted by the Riverside Community Health Foundation,
