THE moment is not far 

away now for the 

opening of our new 

Dolphin Stadium. 

The opening date is closing 

in as our contractors make 

spectacular progress with the 

actual structure taking real 

shape over the past few 

weeks. 

We have been fortunate 

with the weather and are a 

little ahead of schedule. 

A lot of the concrete is in 

place with the seats also being 

inserted as many members 

would know from their 

weekly checks of what will be 

a massive boost for the 

Redcliffe community.

IT had been at least a 

quarter of a century since 

the last time however I 

decided to check out an 

under seven carnival last 

month. 

My boys are all grown up 

and I was interested to see 

how the kids interacted at a 

carnival away from home. 

I could not have been 

more pleased with the 

pleasant time I spent at 

Burpengary as did the 

hundreds of parents, 

children and spectators. 

Today there is a lot more 

participation from parents 

and I was pleased with the 

major input by mums in 

providing drinks and food 

for the children and 

encouraging words when 

they were on the field. 

All the adults cheered and 

barracked at the 

appropriate times to create 

a perfect atmosphere and I 

can see why so many regard 

our game as the greatest one 

around. 

The boys and girls each 

had at least three games and 

no matter whether they 

were big or small, fast or 

slow, they all had smiles on 

their faces … and that says 

it all.

UNFORTUNATELY we 

have lost a key person in our 

football operation. 

Kirsty Fields would be 

known to many of our readers 

through her role with the 

Dolphins, working intensely 

with both senior and junior 

sections. 

Kirsty is very highly 

regarded within our club and 

has been a wonderful asset 

over the past eight years. 

I am sure we will find it 

hard to replace her as her 

work has always been first 

class and she is devoted to 

rugby league. 

Kirsty was one of the 

driving forces behind The 

Clubhouse, the Dolphins 

sponsorship program, 

volunteers, families and 

community organisations. 

She is pursuing a fulltime 

role in marketing and I’m sure 

she will prove a success in her 

new adventure. 

Next month I will introduce 

the latest passionate member 

to join the Dolphins team.

A GOOD turnout was 

present for the launch of the 

2016 Dolphins season. 

Unfortunately I was away 

for the event but I’m told 

the evening was a smash 

with all our new sponsors on 

board as well as our playing 

and coaching staff. 

On the playing front, 

after the first two fixtures 

we are without a victory, 

although it could quite have 

been the other way round. 

Both matches were hard 

fought and perhaps we 

should have snatched wins 

at Townsville and Davies 

Park. 

Our ball control let us 

down on both occasions 

however the efforts from the 

players has been terrific. 

Coach Adam Mogg has 

shown faith in his squad by 

naming the same line-up to 

take on Wynnum Manly. 

We cannot use a string of 

away fixtures as an excuse 

as the team has known from 

the outset that this will be 

the case with the Dolphin 

Stadium development. 

In good news, a string of 

first grade players are on 

their way back, including 

Tyson Cleal, Evander 

Cummins, Curtis Johnston, 

John Brady, Josh Beehag 

and Dan Randall, to put 

pressure on the current 

squad. 

Our lower grades are 

keeping the flag flying with 

the A grade going well in the 

BRL pre-season and the 

Colts taking home their first 

two fixtures by large 

margins.

Standby for June opening 

THE new Western Grandstand, stage one of the 

Dolphin Stadium redevelopment, should hopefully 

be ready for opening in late June this year. 

The redevelopment is 

already more than 50 per cent 

completed with major works 

in place making way for the 

final fit-out of seating, 

eateries, bars, stadium 

entrance and corporate 

facilities. 

We envisage this will take 

place over the next two to 

three months, putting us in the 

ideal position for opening in 

late June. 

The Western Stand will 

hold about 4000 spectators 

when seating and corporate 

facilities are at capacity. 

This now sets us on a path 

to start securing the large 

team sporting carnivals which 

is one of the stadium’s main 

aims from the outset. 

We will hopefully be 

playing on Dolphin Oval 

itself from sometime in May, 

however the Western Stand 

will remain under construction 

with fans occupying the 

eastern hill to view games in 

this period. 

A new car park behind the 

Western Stand and at the rear 

of Dolphin Health Precinct 

will accommodate hundreds 

of vehicles and can be used by 

the Health Precinct during 

peak trading periods. 

On the club’s internal 

matters, we are eagerly 

awaiting a new Bunny’s menu 

starting from April 4, 

coinciding with late autumn 

and the winter season. 

Catering manager and 

executive chef Peter Hurley 

will be striving to keep prices 

affordable with the shortage 

of beef in the state sending 

meat prices skywards. 

As a member-driven club, 

we will continue to offer 

inexpensive value-driven 

quality meals as we always 

have done for our members. 

Keeping on the food theme, 

our very popular Thursday 

theme nights in Dolphin HQ 

will continue with the Spanish 

theme during April. 

Then for May/June we 

intend to warm you up with 

Curry World. 

This is a delicious buffet 

with curries from all over the 

globe. Of course, July and 

August will see old favourite 

Christmas in July return. 

Just a couple of footnotes, 

the Foot Dr has moved from 

the Dolphin Health Precinct 

to Dolphin Central. The guys 

are the best with feet. 

Also the Klingner road 

upgrade undertaken by 

Moreton Bay Regional 

Council will soon have the 

lanes closest to the club open, 

making for easier access to 

the club from Klingner Road.

Delta Express steps on stage from 8pm. 

Delta Express are a six-piece ensemble band 

with a predominantly blues, modern and 

classic rock influence, making them the perfect 

choice to kick off the night. 

Continuing Delta Express’ momentum, Just 

Like That fills the middle fold of the evening’s 

entertainment from 9.30pm with their idyllic 

party band tunes. 

Their mix of old and new classic covers will 

have you dancing non-stop throughout the set.

Dolphins kick off season 

The Village Motors Redcliffe 

Dolphins officially kicked off 

2016 with all teams from under 6 

to the Intrust Super Cup now 

under way. 

Formally the season started with a 

private cocktail party in the gardens 

adjacent to the sports bar of the Redcliffe 

Leagues Club. 

Major sponsors of the Dolphins joined 

players, staff, life members and special 

guests at sunset for the Scott Sattlerhosted 

event. 

Across the evening, guests heard from 

Mayor Allan Sutherland, CEO Tony 

Murphy, general manager – football 

operations Grant Cleal, head coach Adam 

Mogg and several of the Intrust Super 

Cup squad. 

At the launch, Mr Murphy presented 

several sponsors with an appreciation gift 

to acknowledge 10 straight years with 

The Clubhouse. 

Milestones marking our long 

relationships are testament to how local 

business appreciate the importance of 

sport in the community.

often have hands-on assistance from

During the off-season, projects such as 

the Dolphin Stadium and facility upgrades 

around the complexes started and some 

already finished.

Dolphins pay price 

for dropped ball 

THE 2016 season may be only three 

matches in however we already have 

witnessed how close the competition is. 

We were close to victory in both our opening 

fixtures against Townsville and South-Logan, yet 

simple dropped ball cost us wins in both cases. 

The games were tight and I could not fault the 

effort in defence by the squad. It was great but that 

alone does not gain a side two points. 

Early in a season coaches expect dropped ball 

from collision impacts, but not from simple unforced 

errors. 

I emphasised to the players before the Wynnum 

match that a completion rate of 50% across the 

opening two games was not good enough and that 

individuals were not concentrating on catching the 

football. 

Simple dropped ball cost us four points and I 

stated emphatically that no player, including our 

Broncos contingent, would be immune if this poor 

habit continued. 

Thankfully the concentration level was up against 

the Seagulls and we came home with the two points. 

I am convinced that we have two really strong 

squads at the club. 

The results from our BRL A grade in the preseason 

competition confirmed my belief as Danny 

Green’s side ran in 100 points in its opening two 

matches. 

We also have a number of players such as Tyson 

Cleal, Josh Beehag, Dan Randall, John Brady, Curtis 

Johnston and Evander Cummins on their way back 

from injury who will make selection very 

competitive and place pressure on our Q Cup 

players to perform to their abilities. 

★ ★ ★ ★ 

THE decision to plump for one club 

captain in Sam Anderson instead of a 

shared role was a difficult one. 

I know Luke Capewell has been 

Dolphins captain for the past couple of 

years, however Luke has a goal in mind 

for this season and I thought having less 

pressure on him would pay dividends. 

We are now able to keep Luke’s game 

simple without worrying about outside 

pressure and on-field decisions so he can 

produce his best football. 

Sam might not be a massive talker, 

however he plays a physical game and 

maintains a lot of minutes on the 

paddock. 

• CAPTAIN Sam Anderson. 

He has been through the NRL system 

and leads by example. I know it’s only 

early in the season, but we have not seen 

the best of Sam yet and when we do the 

Peninsula will realise what an asset he is. 

★ ★ ★ ★ 

TEAMS appear to have adapted to the reduction 

in interchanges from 10 to eight. 

I found that by round three we were where we 

wanted to be as regards the change. Players know 

what sort of game time they are expected to put in, 

although it does place more pressure on the middle 

of the park. 

The major worry is an unexpected injury to your 

spine ... if injury-free, the interchange is not a major 

worry. 

One of the trends that appears to be emerging is 

that sides are less easily able to bounce back from 

an energy-sapping opening to games if possession 

goes against them, as coaches look to preserve 

those precious changes in case of injuries. 

And as guys get tired, there is the potential of 

more dropped ball, which leads to a compound 

effect, so all the focus remains on ball control. 

★ ★ ★ ★ 

THE sooner the National Youth 

Competition is gone, the better. 


That might sound harsh, however I 

have seen at first hand the consequences 

and realities of the under-20s format. 

The code would be much better off 

devoting its funds and development to 

the second tier competitions in 

Queensland and New South Wales. 

There is very little redeeming about 

the NYC, which places too much pressure 

on kids on their supposed pathway to 

the NRL. 

They are coming out of school at 17, 

promised the world by clubs and start to 

think they are very close to playing NRL. 

The reality is, and statistics show it, 

that very few make it to the rarified air 

of the NRL. 

The kids are not learning life lessons in 

the NYC and after one or two seasons 

have the rug pulled out from underneath 

them with nothing to fall back on. 

The second tiers like the Queensland 

Cup offer a higher standard of football 

with an opportunity for the teenagers to 

work, study for a degree or undertake an 

apprenticeship. 

They also can stay close to home 

instead of moving thousands of 

kilometres away. 

The reality is that the jump from under 

20s to the QCup is big and the jump from 

QCup to the NRL is an even bigger jump. 

The thing about the NRL is that it’s all 

about hard work and the hardest workers 

make it anyway. 

There always will be a small percentage 

of teenagers who make the immediate 

elevation to the NRL via their natural 

ability, however that is not the case with 

the huge majority of players … and the 

numbers don’t lie. 

I note that fellow Intrust Super Cup 

coaches David Simpson of Mackay and 

Northern Pride’s Joe O’Callaghan, who 

both roll out sides loaded with raw 

under-20 talents, have also taken aim at 

the NYC. 

They claim the players think they’re 

ahead of the Intrust Super Cup and are 

not prepared to grind out results.

Partridge flies from 

Norfolk Island coop

Civoniceva to thank for one of 

their most unusual recruits in 

decades. 

Will Partridge, 18, has joined the 

Dolphins for two seasons from tiny 

Norfolk Island, located in the Pacific 

Ocean between Australia, New 

Zealand and New Caledonia and 

1400km directly east of mainland 

Australia. 

Civoniceva went to Norfolk in 

September at the end of last season 

for the island’s rugby league club 

presentation of trophies. 

He also ran coaching sessions, 

during which he noticed the skills of 

Partridge. 

“Petero liked what he saw at the 

sessions and afterwards he called me 

over and said I had too much talent to 

waste,” Partridge said. 

“He asked if I would be keen to 

come over to Redcliffe, and soon as 

he mentioned it, I knew that’s what I 

wanted to do. 

“I went home and spoke to my 

parents, and as I was finishing Year 12, 

it all worked out and I was over here

for the start of the pre-season.” 

Civoniceva’s faith has not been 

misplaced as Partridge has slotted 

into Michael Roberts’ Colts side on 

the wing. 

“I played in the trials and have 

started in the first two rounds of the 

competition,” Partridge said. 

“It’s everything I had hoped for and 

the club and the shift have lived up to 

expectations. It’s good high-level 

footy.” 

Partridge has played league since 

he was four turning five, however the 

sheer lack of numbers on Norfolk 

meant a unique situation. 

“League is the main game on the 

island and I’ve played footy all my life. 

In my age group there were two 

teams,” he said. 

“So at the start of the season, the 

club divided the players up as fairly as 

possible and you go from there. 

“Each week you play the other 

team right through the season.” 

The joke goes that everyone is 

guaranteed of a spot on grand final 

day. 

“I was at home over Christmas for 

10 days and I suppose I won’t get back 

until this Christmas, although I might 

be able to sneak a small break after 

the season finishes,” he said. 

“But I keep in regular contact with 

family and friends through the phone, 

Facebook and texting. I’m always in 

contact.” 

Working for Mini Movers in 

Brisbane, Partridge said he had fitted 

in well to life in Queensland with the 

club and teammates helping the 

transition. 

His connection with Civoniceva 

has not ended as he catches up with 

the State of Origin legend regularly 

for coffee. 

“I will always be grateful to him for 

giving me this opportunity and he 

always checks on how I am going and 

I thank him for all his help,” Partridge 

said.

The Italians have an 

incredible ability to 

bring flavour and feeling 

to every dish they make. 

It is for this reason that 

many of their traditional 

meals are favourites of cultures 

worldwide. 

When you think of the little 

European country, it’s quickly 

associated with pasta, lasagne 

and, of course, pizza. 

For this month’s chef’s special, 

we have travelled all the 

way to Italy. 

Our lovely chef Barb 

Windress has her talent on 

display throughout April and 

she definitely has a treat for 

us. Barb’s special dish is her 

very own pizza, which she has 

called Pepperoni Delight. 

Barb is a passionate chef 

and she absolutely loves what 

she does. Her cooking style is 

all about coming up with new 

creations through experimenting 

with whatever is on hand. 

She says “show me the 

freezer, fridge and pantry and 

I’m inspired to create. I love 

the challenge”. It is this passion 

that makes every dish she 

creates so tasty. 

Barb’s inspiration for this 

pizza came from her holiday 

to Europe, where she travelled 

through 17 different countries 

over six weeks. 

She loved the variety of

Challenge met 

I HAD the opportunity to sit and talk 

with two of our Dolphins Health Precinct 

members and their story is one worth 

sharing. Meet Steve (Silver Fox) Peirce 

and his lovely partner Judith Newton of 

Newport. They recently signed up for the 

8 week Body Overhaul Challenge and 

they are having a ball. See what they had 

to say to me when we met on the couch 

for a chat. 

Q. What made you join the Dolphins 

Health Precinct? 

A. Steve: “We had been members of 

other gyms over the years and thought 

that we would come to the Dolphins 

Health Precinct to see what it was like. 

From the moment we walked in we were 

met by friendly customer service staff 

who walked us through the premises and 

showed us the facility in person. After 

joining we soon learnt that the Dolphins 

Health Precinct was more than a gym. 

Not only were the staff and personal 

trainers helpful and supportive, the other 

members were friendly as well so it made 

us feel extremely welcome.” 

A. Judith: “I had many reasons for 

wanting to join the Dolphins Health 

Precinct. I suffered from chronic asthma 

and I experienced a personal tragedy that 

took my focus away from my own health. 

I am now 56 years old, and like Steve, I 

want to invest in my future self. I realised 

that I needed the support of the Dolphins 

Health Precinct to help me refocus and 

remind me that I am responsible for my 

own health. I was a large lady and I knew 

that exercise was extremely important to 

me however I knew I needed a structured 

program so that I understood my limits 

and could focus on correct and safe 

technique. This is where Ben, a personal 

trainer at the precinct, gave me the 

support and confidence I needed to focus 

on building a better me.” 

Q. Were there any areas of the body 

you specifically needed to strengthen? 

A. Judith: “I actually have major 

surgery coming up in the next couple of 

months and I wanted to be in the best 

condition possible in order to minimise 

risk and ensure a quick recovery. This is 

also why I chose to participate in the 

Dolphins 8 week Body Overhaul 

Challenge. The challenge would help me 

remain focused and put me in a good 

position prior to surgery.” 

A. Steve: “I served in the Australian 

Navy for 20 years and during this time I 

suffered a terrible knee injury. I have 

osteoarthritis and a few years ago I 

suffered an ankle injury. These issues 

prevent me from running therefore my 

plan was to work at strengthening my 

ligaments and muscles to prevent injury 

and provide better support.” 

Q. What do you think of the Dolphins 

8 week Body Overhaul Challenge 

(BOC)? 

A. Steve: “I am just loving the 

atmosphere, the camaraderie and the 

support that we give each other in our 

teams. We were worried there would be 

challenges that we couldn’t do due to our 

injuries but Ben (team captain and 

personal trainer) tailored each exercise to 

work around my old injuries. The BOC is 

so very personal and we have made great 

friends along the way. I have lost 4 

kilograms in the last 3 weeks.” 

A. Judith: “I used to be an observer, 

now I am a participant. This alone brings 

me great joy and confidence. I have lost 

almost 4 kilograms so far because Ben 

has provided me with a smart and safe 

program that has allowed me to work to 

capacity in a controlled environment.” 

Q. What do you think of your 

personal trainer? 

A. Judith: “I just love Ben. He is young

but so mature and he has a wonderful and 

gentle approach to personal training. He 

is encouraging, supportive and I now call 

him a friend.” 

A. Steve: “Ben is just a wonderful

Q. What is your long-term agenda 

regarding your health? 

A. Steve: “We live in one of the best 

places on earth and I want to be in the 

best shape I can be in to enjoy my 

retirement. I am 61 years old this year 

and I know that enjoyment in my later 

years will come from regular smart 

exercise techniques performed in a safe 

environment. That is what the Dolphins 

Health Precinct offers me. Everyone 

must exercise and strengthen their 

weaknesses to stay strong. This ultimately 

leads to a happy, healthy lifestyle.” 

A. Judith: “We have to be responsible 

for our health and I want to continue to 

lose weight. I know it’s a long-term thing 

and I am all about prevention instead of 

cure.”

We had a great day at Wynnum 

last month supporting the senior 

teams. It was great to have a large 

number of Old Boys cheering the 

teams on.

along with us behaved themselves

of you on future footy trips. 

It is with great sadness I report 

on the passing of our long-time 

member Reg Greentree. Reg 

fought a brave battle and passed 

away peacefully at Redcliffe 

Hospital. Our thoughts and 

prayers are with Reg’s family at 

this time. 

The Old Boys have donated all 

leftover supplies of the new-style 

shirt to the Fiji cyclone relief 

appeal. Hopefully we can play a 

small part in putting a smile back 

on the face of someone who has 

had their world so dramatically 

affected. It is great to see a heap 

of new members signing up as 

well as current members 

renewing.

Rockin rolls in cash 

THE Redcliffe Leagues Club hosted 

the third annual Rockin 4 The 

Homeless on Saturday, March 12. 

Patrons from as far as Kingaroy, Byron Bay, 

Townsville and Toowoomba joined a bumper 

crowd. 

The Radiators headlined 11 hours of 

entertainment, along with former AC/DC Dave 

Evans. 

Local favourites Team Utopia, Hill 60, 

Pretty Fingers and 11 other acts kept the crowd 

on the move between the two stages. 

“We are very happy with the way the show 

worked this year,” said Rockin executive 

producer Dan Nebe. 

“We strive to keep improving the experience 

for the patrons each year. 

“The Radiators and Dave Evans absolutely 

rocked the place and all the other performers 

jumped in head first to help create our best 

show yet. 

“One of the highlights was when the Steve 

Skinner band was joined by some special 

guests and performed a Skinner tribute. 

‘We lost Steve Skinner last year after a long 

battle with illness. He was an amazing 

supporter of the event and cause.” 

An enthusiastic crew of more than 40 

volunteers set about selling raffle tickets and 

merchandise to raise money for the Club 189 

drop-in centre. 

“We will release a final figure in the next 

week with some monies still to come in,” said 

communications manager Craig Miley. 

“We are proud to report that with all the 

lead-up work from a tireless crew and takings 

on event day, the total is over $21,000. 

“Thanks to all the volunteers involved and 

huge thanks must go to the Redcliffe Leagues 

Club for hosting the event and for all the help 

with promotions and their enthusiastic staff.”
