WEATHER TRIVIA CALENDAR 2017
Celebrating Canada’s 150th Anniversary
Compiled by David Phillips
Canadians love the weather. It’s our favorite topic
of conversation. And the Canadian Weather Trivia
Calendar is one of this country’s most popular and
best-selling compilation of facts, dates, and stories
about our climate. Did you know that rain increases
productivity? Or that cold kills more than heat? Or
that the longer a porcupine’s quills are in the fall, the
snowier the winter will be?
Weather Trivia Calendar 2017
DAVID PHILLIPS spent more than 40 years in the
Weather business at Environment Canada, first as
a researcher, and later as media spokesperson. He
retired in 2015, but continues to add daily facts and
tidbits to his collection of over 35,000 weather
tales. A recipient of the Order of Canada, David
lives in Barrie, Ontario
OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE
(HIGHWAY OF TEARS)
By Ray Michalko
Ray Michalko explores the series of unsolved murdered and missing
women's cases in northern British Columbia, along a lonely seven
hundred kilometer stretch of Highway 16, now known as "The Highway
of Tears" that winds its way through the scenic wilderness of the Coast
Mountains, west from Prince George, through a number of small
northern communities to Prince Rupert, on northern British Columbia's
West Coast. The Highway of Tears holds the secrets of multiple
mysteries spanning close to four decades and the tragic unknown
sets of circumstances involving the murder and disappearance of nine
young women, all an average age of eighteen and with one exception, all
Aboriginal.
Fueled by frustration with the police’s inability to solve any of these crimes
in thirty-five years, inspired by the belief that someone somewhere knew
something, and driven by his unexplainable personal commitment, Ray
embarked on a life altering journey.
SABLE ISLAND
By William Freedman
Sable Island is a storied place. This remote, 50-km-long, emergent sandbar,
located at the very edge of the continental shelf off Nova Scotia, has been
the locale of hundreds of tragic shipwrecks, brave rescues of stranded
mariners, and home to many thousands of seals and hundreds of wild
horses.
It was because of its famous natural and historical features that Sable
Island was made a new national park of Canada in 2013. From this freshly
conferred status, there emerged a need to develop a management plan
for the island, to ensure that its key natural features would be conserved.
Profusely illustrated with photographs, line drawings, and tables, the book
also provides prudent recommendations for the ongoing research and
stewardship of Sable Island.
PROFESSOR WILLIAM FREEDMAN was the former head of Dalhousie
University’s Biology Department, chaired the Nature Conservancy of
Canada’s Board of Directors, in addition to being an active member of the
Tree Canada Foundation. Awarded the Canadian Geographic Society’s Gold
THIS BEING
By Ingrid Ruthig
In this, her debut collection, Ingrid Ruthig records the flux of the individual
through the past, present and future of our collective world. Ruthig’s concerns
are with our very skin, and our separation from one another – separations
that are at once familial, intimate, interconnected. She explores our need to
create, and in doing so to build a deeper sense of self: questioning, observing,
then striving to respond. Her voice throughout is confident, concentrated,
wry. This is a book of poems about the nature of the frail, flawed human being,
who is nonetheless perfect.
It’s as if we pull up to the end of the world,
throw the car doors wide and tumble out
to consume the view – our breath arrested
by a full-stop sky, the drop to treetops,
the humpback La Cloche breaching horizon
to the north, and water far as you can see…
A WORLD WE HAVE LOST:
SASKATCHEWAN BEFORE 1905
By Bill Waiser
A World We Have Lost examines the early history of Saskatchewan
through an Aboriginal and environmental lens. Indian and mixed-descent
peoples played leading roles in the story–as did the land and climate.
Despite the growing British and Canadian presence, the Saskatchewan
country remained Aboriginal territory. The region’s peoples had their
own interests and needs and the fur trade was often peripheral to their
lives. Indians and Métis peoples wrangled over territory and resources,
especially bison, and were not prepared to let outsiders control their
lives, let alone decide their future. Native-newcomer interactions
were consequently fraught with misunderstandings, sometimes painful
difficulties, if not outright disputes.
By the early nineteenth century, a distinctive western society had
emerged in the North-West–one that was challenged and undermined by
the takeover of the region by young dominion of Canada. Settlement and
development was to be rooted in the best features of Anglo-Canadian
civilization, including the white race. By the time Saskatchewan entered
confederation as a province in 1905, the world that Kelsey had encountered
during his historic walk on the northern prairies had become a world we
have lost.
COULD YOU PLEASE, PLEASE STOP
SINGING?
By Sabyasachi Nag
Sabyasachi (Sachi) Nag blends humour with shock and surprise. The title poem
“Could You Please, Please Stop Singing?” evokes a famous Hemingway line and
is central to the overall tonality of this collection, that occasionally yields to
contrary pulls between the banal and the sublime.
Pub Date: January, 2016
Price $18.99
ISBN: 978-1-77161-171-8
SABYASACHI NAG’s first collection of poems, Bloodlines, was published in
2006. He lives in Mississauga with his wife and son. Nag immigrated to Canada
from Calcutta, and many of the poems in this collection are about this city. Nag’s
poems are about voyaging into emptiness and returning with a piece of cloud
mistook for cotton candy.
FLEETING CITY
By Hovhannes Tekgyozyan
Fleeting City is an important novel representative of the new generation
of Armenian writers. Tekgyozyan’s novel has been described as a “virtual
movie-novella, where mysticism and urban typologies, grotesque and
humourous transitions are all interlaced.” The two main characters in
Fleeting City, Gagik and Grigor, tell the same story but from two different
SAINT GERMAIN DES PRES
By Gérard Bonal
Translated by Leonard Rosmarin
Saint Germain des Pres is a very important book about a a small
district in Paris during a particularly vital decade—1945 to 1955.
The end of the war in Paris brought about a creative explosion in the arts,
from literature to music, from philosophy to dance, from theatre to painting
and much more. Gérard Bonal has documented this unique, almost mythical
period in French intellectual and creative life. All the legendary names of
that period are assembled in Bonal’s book— Juliette Greco, Jean-Paul Sartre,
Simone de Beauvoir, Margueritte Duras and more. This is a different kind of
historiography.
IS THERE A NUTMEG IN THE
HOUSE?
By Elizabeth David
Compiled by Jill Norman
This anthology of Elizabeth David's work, originally published in
hardback in 2000, is a direct sequel to An Omelette and a Glass of
Wine. It again contains a selection of her journalistic and occasional
work from four decades.
Much of it she had chosen herself for reprinting in this more
accessible form. In addition there is a considerable amount of
unpublished material found in her own files, or contributed by
friends to whom she had given recipes, or to whom she had sent
letters, either with notes in answer to queries or giving details of
current research.
Her work is always immensely readable, elegant and witty, and she
has a wonderful ability to share her sense of season and place, her
passionate interest in food, its history, its myriad styles and its role
in society. There is much here to enjoy both for dedicated Elizabeth
David fans and for those who are new to her writing.
VEGGIE FAST FOOD
Clarissa & Florian Sehn
Are you under the impression that vegetarians can’t have fast food? On the
contrary! This new vegetarian cookbook, translated from German into a new
English hardback edition, offers more than 80 quick and easy veggie recipes
– from Manchego quesadillas and TexMex burgers to tomato-cinnamon
fries and chanterelle gyros! This is the book of vegetarian food for those in
a hurry, but the handy “vegan traffic light” indicators – red for vegetarian;
yellow for vegan adaptation and green for vegan makes it easy to find vegan
options just as quickly.
CLARISSA and FLORIAN SEHN discovered their love of vegetarian and
vegan cuisine together. Soon, however, they ran out of creative ideas – they
needed a new recipe book. Out of a lack of viable options, the two decided
to get creative and develop recipes themselves and this is the result. Their
first cookbook is dedicated to vegetarian fast food, which they consider has
always received short shrift – until now.
VEGETARIANISM A HISTORY
Colin Spencer
Though the word ‘vegetarianism’ was not coined until the mid-nineteenth
century, the vegetarian diet has been around as long as man has. Colin
Spencer’s comprehensive book, reissued in paperback for the first time in
fifteen years explores the psychology of abstention from flesh and attempts
to discover why omnivorous humans at times voluntarily abstain from an
available food. The breadth of Spencer’s research is quite outstanding and
makes for a truly erudite read.
CUISINE NIÇOISE
By Jacques Médecin
Niçoise cuisine is the food of the Mediterranean. It is not only a delight
to the palate, but is known to have many health benefits. Its recipes are
in tune with the natural cycle of the year using in-season fruits, herbs and
vegetables, as well as plenty of fish. But the majority of the recipes are
merely guides unless you are baking – offering a relaxed flexibility with
in. As well as explaining how to make genuine salade niçoise (that most
betrayed of Niçois dishes)
Jacques Médecin lures the reader into the wonderful enticing world
of tians, panisses, socca, and ganses. While not everyone will be able to
dine alfresco under an olive tree, the way they do in Nice, this classic
cookbook will at least allow you to recreate the city’s best-loved dishes.
ISLAND IN AN EMPIRE: EDUCATION,
RELIGION, AND SOCIAL LIFE IN
NEWFOUNDLAND, 1800-1855.
By Phillip McCann
The first half of the nineteenth century brought two major revolution,
the British Industrial Revolution and the French political revolution, which
devastatingly heralded the modern world. In Newfoundland, an important
strategic outpost island within the powerful British Empire, the period
brought the start of religious, educational, and class identifications and
divisions, particularly in the capital, St. John’s.
It also marked the beginning of the growth of a popular culture: citizens
of St. John’s enjoyed amateur and professional theatre, on par with that
in London, as well as horse-racing, the Regatta, circuses, concerts, and
exhibitions of art and natural history, opening the eyes of residents to
worlds they would never have experienced. Overall, argues historian
Phillip McCann, the years 1800 to 1855 can be seen as a crucible in which
Newfoundland society and identity was born.
PHILLIP MCCANN is Professor Emeritus of Education at Memorial
University, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and University of
Manchester Ph.D. He is author of numerous articles and books concerning
the history of education in Newfoundland and Labrador.
NEWFOUNDLAND IN THE FIRST
WORLD WAR
By Jenny Higgins
The dominion of Newfoundland was not prepared for war in
1914: it had no army and most residents had never even seen a
soldier. Yet tens of thousands of people, driven by patriotism, duty,
and a thirst for adventure, volunteered. This book traces the role
Newfoundland played in the conflict. Stories of battles, heroism,
heartbreak, triumph, and sacrifice are recounted in faithful detail,
brought to life by dozens of archival photographs, correspondence,
and newspaper clippings. It follows the Newfoundland Regiment
from its beginnings, through the horror of Beaumont Hamel, and
onto other battlefields.
JENNY HIGGINS is a St. John’s-based writer, whose first book,
Perished: The 1914 Newfoundland Sealing Disaster won the 2015
Democracy 250 Atlantic Book Award for Historical Writing. She
PEACE BY PIECE
By the Cabot Quilters Guild
Quilted images from the First World War, many created by
descendants of the Newfoundland Regiment, are depicted in book
form and for display to commemorate the centenary of the Battle
of Beaumont Hamel.
Each of the 260 quilt blocks is unique to the craft person who
created it; accompanying each of them is a description of the
artist’s inspiration for taking part in the project. The blocks have
been sewn into quilts, categorized by theme.
In 1985, the CABOT QUILTERS’ GUILD met in St. John’s to learn
basic quilting techniques. Starting with 12 women, the guild met
in members’ homes, teaching each other what they learned and
encouraging new ideas. Today, the group has over 100 members.
MAPLE SYRUP:
THE SCIENCE OF A FOREST TREASURE
By Michael Rechlin
Maple Syrup takes the reader through the whats, hows, and whys of
maple sap and its conversion to maple syrup, that all-so-appreciated
product of the North American deciduous forest.
The journey begins with an introduction to trees, primarily maple
trees, and especially sugar maple trees — where they occur, how they
function, and particularly how they produce and deliver the sap from
which the syrup is made. Due attention also is paid to the history of
human collection of sap and its conversion into syrup and sugar, ranging
from its harvest by Native Americans through to the modern — and still
evolving — tastes and methods of harvest and production.
Written for the broad audience, Maple Syrup will be an accessible,
enlightening, and enjoyable exploration of the science, history, and
economy of a treasured natural resource.
sing and make people laugh. She tells people that she was born with an extra
gene, but her sister has to buy hers at the mall (ha, ha!!). Being in three dance
numbers in the school production of Grease is a big job, but with the help of
her Best Buddy, Gianni, Erika knows her can be a star.
The other is a Grade 11 boy with a secret. Like his Best Buddy, Erika, who
was born with Down Syndrome, Gianni loves to sing and dance. He also
knows that he was born different from the other boys in his school - but is
he that different from Blake, the cool, attractive male lead in the school play?
Or is he just imagining that the sparks between them are mutual? And will
the rough gang of guys at school also pick up on who he really is?
Told in the alternating voices of Erika and Gianni, Born With is the story of
two teens who help each other to find their own versions of success and
acceptance. Fragile Bones, the first book in the One-2-One series is a finalist
for the Red Maple award. The author will be touring, visiting schools and
libraries in support of this nomination and will be promoting Born With at
the same time.
THE CHRONICLES OF RAHTRUM: BOOK 1
THE DREAM
By R.K. McLay.
The Chronicles of Rahtrum: The Dream is the first book in a
tension-building trilogy by R.K. McLay. A work of literary fiction,
this young adult, fantasy, adventure story is unlike any before it. The
Dream transports readers into the far north of the Yukon Territory
(where the epic journey begins) and envelopes them in the vastness of
nature. Once there, readers inhabit a harsh and natural world that is
faithfully rendered, but also delicately infused with magic. A world that
is populated by reimagined mythological creatures that feel every bit
as real as the animal protagonists they travel and struggle beside. The
Chronicles of Rahtrum tell the story of a peculiar young Caribou that
is chosen by Rahtrum, the Binder, to set forth on a heroic journey to
awaken the Cargoth (human beings) to their true place in nature and
the World.
The beautiful and dangerous north unfurls as Bou follows an age-old
migration route in search of the Breschuvine.
Only after finding the Breschuvine does he learn the shocking reason
he has been chosen by Rahtrum; and that for himself, his friends, and
his enemies, the greatest of all journeys has only just begun.
DRAGONFLY KITES
By Tomson Highway
Illustrations by Julie Flett
Dragonfly Kites is the second book in Tomson Highway’s magical Songs
of the North Wind trilogy. Like Caribou Song, it has a bilingual text,
written in English and Cree. And Highway once again brilliantly evokes
the very essence of childhood as he weaves a deceptively simple story
about the power of the imagination. Joe and Cody, two young Cree
brothers, along with their parents and their little dog Ootsie, are
spending the summer by one of the hundreds of lakes in northern
Manitoba.
Summer means a chance to explore the world and make friends with
an array of creatures, But what Joe and Cody like doing best of all is
flying dragonfly kites. They catch dragonflies and gently tie a length of
thread around the middle of each dragonfly before letting it go. Off
soar the dragonflies into the summer sky and off race the brothers
and Ootsie too, chasing after their dragonfly kites through trees and
meadows and down to the beach before watching them disappear into
the night sky. But in their dreams, Joe and Cody soar through the skies
with their kites until it’s time to wake up.
SAMMY AND THE HEADLESS
HORSEMAN
While Sammy and the Headless Horseman takes place in the Catskill
SOMETIMES I GET THE WIGGLES
By Andee Cooper
Kannon is a little boy with a form of epilepsy that sometimes gives him the
wiggles, and when that happens, just like jello, his whole body jiggles. Kannon
would very much like to go to school with everyone else his age, but he worries
his condition might scare the other children away. After much thought, he comes
up with an idea to enlist and train all of his classmates as Seizure Heroes as a way
of helping his teacher and his fellow students see him through each school day.
Based on a true story and written by Kannon’s mother.
ANDEE COOPER is the mother of Kannon and a disability associate for the
Community Action Project of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She also serves as an ambassador
for the Lennox Gastaut Foundation of New York and on the board of the Epilepsy
Association of Oklahoma. She and Kannon share a love for the mountains of
Colorado. This is her first book.
AGING OUT — THE SEQUEL TO THE BOY
WHO CARRIED BRICKS
By Alton Carter
While still a little boy, Alton Carter walked away from his violent, drug- and
alcohol-riddled childhood home believing the worst life had to offer was behind
him. He was sorely mistaken. After surviving a troubled foster care system and
becoming the first in his family to graduate from high school—with a college
scholarship in hand no less, he found himself at age eighteen, as so many young
people do on the cusp of life: scared, lonely, and all on his own.
This is the story of how he aged out of the foster care system only to have his
college dreams shattered, and how he found the courage to face his past and dare
to take the steps to the life and family he always dreamed he would one day have.
A former police officer and the author of The Boy Who Carried Bricks, Alton
Carter is director of youth ministries for the First United Methodist Church of
Stillwater, Oklahoma, and a graduate of Oklahoma State University. The father of
two sons—Kelton and Colin, he loves spending time with his family, working with
youngsters, and fishing. He makes his home in Stillwater, with his wife, Kristin, and
his boys.
JIM THE WONDER DOG
By Marty Figley Rhodes
Long before a dog named Chaser became known as the Smartest
Dog in the World, Missouri had Jim the Wonder Dog, a Depression
Era hunting dog that many believed was either a genius or possessed
of clairvoyant skills. There was evidence for both: Jim predicted seven
Kentucky Derby winners and the winners of the 1936 World Series
and presidential race, but the setter could also take direction in
foreign languages (Italian, French, German, and Spanish), shorthand,
and Morse Code—and recognized both colors and musical
instruments. This is the true story of the dog that became known as
Missouri’s Wonder Dog.
GRANDMA AND THE LOUP GAROU
By Angel St. Cyr
Illustrated by Sheldon Dawson
The old stories tell of Loup Garou – the werewolf, half-wolf and
half-man, commanding the dark forest at night. Winnipeg author
Angel St. Cyr twists the fearsome fable in surprising ways for
Grandma and the Loup Garou, her new illustrated book. In modern
times, young Joseph and his siblings gather in the moonlight as
Grandma prepares to enchant them with another story. Young Louis
is lost in the woods when a giant grey wolf arrives to lead him home
to safety. There may be more than good luck to this, and Louis learns
the tale of Loup Garou.
Through another surprise encounter, Louis learns, too, there is more
to the mythical beast of the forest than fearful people would believe.
Angel St. Cyr wraps a story within a story to savour the pleasure
of storytelling itself as Grandma enchants the children. Those two
levels are conveyed thrillingly by Sheldon Dawson’s illustrations.
BABA DIDI AND THE GODWITS FLY
By Nicola Muir
Illustrated by Annie Hayward
Foreword by Helen Clark
Godwits are an iconic species. Each bird has a long bill. Every year, regular
as clockwork, they migrate from new Zealand (Aotearoa) through East
Asia and the Pacific, to the Canadian and Alaskan Arctic regions.
A young girl, and her grandmother Baba Didi, are in New Zealand, on a
beach, watching the godwits prepare to migrate. And as the two people
talk about the godwits courageous journey across the Pacific, the story
resonates with those stories of generations of human travellers, from
the Maori reaching New Zealand to Baba Didi’s migration from Croatia.
ANNE HAYWARD is an abstract and figurative painter, widely respected
within the New Zealand community.
NICKIE MUIR is a teacher, writer, and newspaper columnist.
STEP RIGHT UP
By Donna Janell Bowman
Illustrated by Daniel Minter
William “Doc” Key was a former slave and self-trained
veterinarian who taught his horse, Jim, to read, write, and do
math. He and Jim became one of the most famous traveling
performance acts around the turn of the twentieth century.
William “Doc” Key had a special way with animals. Growing
up an enslaved boy in Tennessee, Doc was sent to plantations
around the state to care for sick and wounded animals.
When the Civil War ended and Doc was freed, he began to
dream of breeding a winning racehorse. Doc began teaching Jim
first to recognize letters, then to read, write, add, subtract, and
more. Doc soon took his talented horse on the road, spreading
a message of patience and kindness, over cruelty, to all animals.
DONNA JANELL BOWMAN first heard about Doc and Jim
Key in 2005. She didn’t believe that a horse could learn to read,
so she began doing her own research and was inspired to tell
Doc and Jim’s story for young readers. She lives in Texas with
her husband, their two sons, and their rescue animals, Sparky
and Mittens. This is her first picture book.
