incorporated and 

unincorporated 

areas cover 

approximately 45,000 acres, is 27 miles 

long and is one to eight miles wide. Within 

these boundaries, with a population of 

approximately 13,000, are a variety of 

climates and terrains including beaches, 

mesas and canyons that create a unique 

environment. 

It is very easy to understand why Malibu 

has an irresistible charm. Its rugged rural 

beauty is unsurpassed and its wide sandy 

beaches, with pristine ocean views, 

captivate residents and visitors alike. 

Malibu is truly special. In order to help 

protect all of this, the Malibu Chamber of 

Commerce provides a means by which an 

orderly growth will take place. 

Whether you are a new Malibu resident, an 

“Old-Timer” or a visitor, The Malibu 

Chamber of Commerce invites you to use 

this handy guide to obtain information 

regarding Malibu Shopping, Dining, 

Accommodations, Activities, Beach 

information & general things to do.

As a consumer you have the power to 

shape our community and make a 

difference. Every time you open your 

wallets to a business, you are saying, “I like 

what you are doing. Keep it up”. It is 

important to note that Malibu area 

businesses employ local people, use local 

services, wines, produce, etc. and, help to 

strengthen our local economy. When you 

shop in these stores, the businesses and 

their employees re-circulate your dollar 

right back into our community. Research 

has shown that 73% of every dollar that 

you spend in a locally owned business 

remains in our community (maximizing all 

dollars that are spent locally). This money 

translates into roads, parks, municipal 

services, police and fire protection as well 

as public school support. 

In 2015, The Malibu Chamber of Commerce 

had a wonderful year with highly 

successful activities and, an increased 

public awareness of how important the 

entire business community is to the 

immediate well-being and future of a 

prosperous and happy Malibu. The Malibu 

Chamber of Commerce serves as a primary 

conduit for exchanging important 

information between Residents, Small 

Businesses, Large Businesses, Commercial 

Properties, Land Owners and Investment 

Interests. 

If you are a non-Chamber business, come

become a very integral part of this very 

active network of community serving

I truly believe that, with, my outstanding 

Board of Directors and all of your support,

in Malibu’s community affairs for over 50

As Mark Persson, CEO of the Mailbu 

Chamber of Commerce points out, “For 

years people have been seduced by the 

name, Malibu.” Movies and television 

shows have been made about it. There’s a 

car named aﬞer it. There’s even a Barbie 

doll named aﬞer it! But what people may 

not realize is that Malibu is also a 

community, and true Malibuites celebrate 

their town. They know what a wonderful 

place this is to live in and raise their 

families – not in an entitled, exclusive way, 

but in a way that builds real personal 

relationships. Their children go to school 

here, and they shop locally. They care 

about Malibu's environment - the ocean 

and the Santa Monica Mountains are their 

back yards. Our citizens frequent those 

businesses in Malibu who feel the same. 

Founded in 1948 with a charter 

membership of 12 local businesses, the 

Malibu Chamber of Commerce, Persson 

says proudly, has grown into a dynamic 

organization with a growing membership. 

The city is renowned for its 27 miles of 

beaches and its world famous Colony, but 

it is also a district that reaches all the way 

to the San Fernando Valley and the 

Ventura County line. 

Malibu is home to one of the best 

educational institutions in the country — 

Pepperdine University. There are fine 

dining establishments such as V’s 

restaurant, Geoffrey’s, and Saddlepeak 

Lodge. But there are also the myriads of 

shopping venues that are necessary to 

support any bustling community: the 

laundries, hardware stores, gas stations, 

realtors, markets, etc. That’s the 

combination that makes Malibu a real 

community and not just the star of 

numerous movies and TV shows. 

It’s also why the role played by the Malibu 

Chamber of Commerce is so important. 

“The Chamber is an organization that 

brings together groups, businesses, and 

individuals who can all benefit from a 

personal sense of community,” Persson 

explains. “The oldest form of business is 

people talking to one another. If you are a 

businessperson who is great at what you 

do, but you don’t know how to take your 

business to the next level, the Chamber is 

here to help. That’s our job, providing 

information and forming connections.” 

The Malibu Chamber and it’s members do 

not operate in a bubble. The Chamber has 

been a participant in the Westside Council 

of Chamber of Commerce (WC3) since the 

council’s formation. As the voice of 

business for the westside of Los Angeles, 

WC3 includes the Los Angeles Area 

Chamber of Commerce, Mar Vista Chamber 

of Commerce, West Los Angeles Chamber 

of Commerce, West Hollywood Chamber of 

Commerce, Venice Chamber of Commerce, 

Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, 

Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce, 

LAx Coastal Chamber of Commerce, 

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Culver 

City Chamber of Commerce, Century City 

Chamber of Commerce, Beverly Hills 

Chamber of Commerce, and Malibu 

Chamber of Commerce. “WC3 exists 

because we believe a vibrant business 

community enhances quality of life and 

together we make a difference.” says 

Persson. Mark Persson serves as Vice Chair 

of the Council in 2016. 

Education, also plays an important part in 

the Chamber’s activities. 

Our member are informed on important 

issues and new technologies through 

workshops, commiמּee meetings and 

business connection events. 

“The website is very important,” Persson 

says. “It offers residents, Chamber 

members, and potential visitors to Malibu 

real-time information, whether it’s about 

the latest laws regarding business or how 

to take a self-guided tour of our everexpanding 

Wine Trail. Our goal is to be the 

best possible resource organization for 

businesses, residents, and visitors.” 

“We’re open to taking suggestions from 

members on how we can beמּer serve the 

community,” says Persson. “At the Malibu 

Chamber of Commerce, it’s all about 

building relationships, staying informed 

and thinking outside the pyramid.”

THE malibu arTS FESTiVal 

The Annual Malibu Arts Festival is 

produced by the Malibu Chamber of 

Commerce. It is held on the last weekend 

of July. It has been one of Southern 

California’s most spectacular outdoor art 

shows for the last 44 years. This 

wonderful 2-day event brings thousands to 

enjoy a weekend of great food, live music, 

a wine and beer garden, fun activities for 

the kids, and the opportunity to purchase 

some of the most incredible art created by 

artists and designers all over California and 

beyond.

TaSTE oF malibu 

Taste of Malibu is a culinary and wine event 

that showcases an array of different 

cuisines from local Malibu restaurants and 

a variety of assorted wines from local 

wineries in Malibu. This event is an 

opportunity to enjoy some of Malibu’s best 

culinary creations. 


malibu CooKS Tour 

The Malibu Cooks Tour, which is produced 

by the Malibu Methodist Nursery School, is 

a fundraising tour that features gourmet 

food prepared by local chefs. While 

tasting an array of delicious foods, you will 

also be touring beautiful gardens and 

estates that feature unique art and 

furnishings.

THE malibu NauTiCa TriaTHloN 

The Nautica Triathlon is a fundraising 

event held at Zuma Beach that features 

divisions of swimming, bicycling, and 

running races as well as races for children 

to participate in. Athletes from all over the 

country take part in this exhilarating event.

Like all California beaches, Malibu beaches 

are technically public land below the mean 

high tide line. Many large public beaches 

(Zuma Beach, Surfrider Beach) are easy to 

access, but such access is sometimes 

limited in some of the smaller and more 

remote beaches. Some Malibu beaches 

are private, such as Paradise Cove, which 

charges an entrance fee. New access 

points created in 2015. Access to most all 

Malibu beaches can be obtained aﬞer a bit 

of a walk.

Geמּy Villa, an art museum that is part of 

the J. Paul Geמּy Museum, is located just 

outside the Malibu city limits. The Museum 

at the Geמּy Villa houses collections of 

antiquities, sculptures, art pieces and

A large-scale mural adorning Malibu Village, Malibu’s premier 

shopping and dining destination, welcomes residents and 

visitors arriving in Malibu from the east on Pacific Coast 

Highway. This ode to surf history and swell science depicts the swell map from August 2014’s 

Hurricane Marie, which brought double and triple overhead waves to historic Surfrider Beach, 

alongside iconic silhoueמּes of legends Mickey ‘Mongoose’ Muñoz Joel Tudor, Tom Curren and 

teenage surf prodigy Frankie Seely. 

Artist Chris Wyrick was initially inspired by a quote from Muñoz, who pioneered the classic 

Quasimodo pose at a remote Malibu break, "Born in storms on the open sea, waves do not have 

gentle beginnings. They are wild at birth… Through the discipline of wind and gravity, they are 

transformed into rhythmic swells of uniform height still containing the power of the storm, which 

formed them… As the swells enter the shallow coastal waters they crest. It is here, at the death of a 

storm's energy, that the surfer connects with the wave, using it to express himself, just as a painter 

uses the canvas, or a dancer the stage.” 

Honoring surf history is an important aspect of the mural’s design, as is looking to the future of the 

sport. Wyrick’s image of Seely depicts the recently-turned-pro surfer hanging ten at Surfrider during 

the epic Marie – a feat of strength and grace that reflects the poetry of surfing’s relationship to nature 

through one if its newest stars. 


THE MALIBU COAST 

AMERICAN VITICULTURAL AREA 

A milestone was 

achieved in 

2014 when 

the Federal 

government 

granted AVA 

(American 

Viticultural 

Area) status to 

vineyards located 

in Malibu. Their 

unique quality was 

recognized by the TTB (Alcohol and 

Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau) aﬞer 

members of the Malibu Coast Vintners and 

Grape Growers Alliance had invested years 

in raising awareness of the potential to 

produce world-class wine from grapes 

grown in Malibu. 

The new Malibu Coast AVA encompasses 

approximately 45,000 acres of land 

stretching from Topanga Canyon and on up 

to the northernmost edge of the Santa 

Monica Mountains in Camarillo. Although 

grapes have been grown in Malibu since 

the early 1800s, it’s only been within the 

last 20 years that factors affecting grape 

growing have been thoroughly 

documented; soil, exposition, weather, 

native vegetation, and other aspects all are 

taken into consideration in bestowing an 

AVA. There are currently some 200 acres 

planted within the AVA’s boundaries, 

farmed by 52 different growers. 

Wine labels bearing an AVA designation on 

their wine label enable consumers to 

identify exactly where their wine came 

from. It allows wine aficionados 

to make the connection 

between the unique 

vineyard site and the 

character of the 

wine in their 

glass. There’s 

also an 

implication of 

quality and 

consistency, so 

they’ll know 

what to expect 

when they 

purchase a boמּle 

with “Malibu Coast” 

on the label. 

Such an appellation 

distinction serves as a catalyst 

for any number of good things to take 

place within the area: grape-growers and 

winemakers unite to share information 

beneficial to the entire group, and tourism

increases as consumers become aware of 

the fact that there’s a burgeoning wine 

scene so close to a major metropolis. 

Local businesses associated with wine 

benefit as well, including restaurants, 

grocery stores, tour operators, 

farmworkers, vineyard suppliers and

marketers, and even real estate 

specialists. Vineyard owners in the 

Malibu Coast AVA view themselves 

as stewards of the land,

farming techniques in order

wHaT will you Do wHEN THE 

NEXT DiSaSTEr oCCurS? 

Sunshine, ocean breezes and a moderate 

year ‘round climate. We all know the 

benefits of living in this balmy 

Mediterranean ecosystem. California living 

has a lot going for it, right? However, we 

also know that Southern California, and the 

Malibu area in particular, is subject to the 

effects of natural disasters such as 

wildfires, earthquakes, mudslides and 

flooding, among other historical threats. 

In a major disaster, it may take three days 

or more before vital services are restored. 

It is unlikely that emergency response 

services will be able to immediately 

respond to everyone’s needs, so it’s 

important to be prepared to take care of 

yourself and your family. This means there 

will be no water supply, no power, no 

phone, cellphone or Internet, no gas, no 

deliveries of food, gasoline, clothing, no 

ambulance, no medics no police, no 

firefighters, no 911 responders, ZERO: 17th 

century California, here we are. So in a 

disaster, plan on being on your own for at 

least the first 72 hours and prepare for 

even longer! 

Being prepared includes making sure that 

the entire family is ready and informed in 

advance of a disaster or emergency. Once 

the earth shakes or a 50 foot wall of flame 

is racing up the hill to your home, it is too 

late. Also, your family members might not 

be together when these events take place. 

So you should have a communication plan 

to insure you are able to contact and find 

one another.

The following are some basic steps 

recommended by the American Red Cross 

to make sure you and your family remain 

safe: 

• Meet with your family or household 

members and discuss how to prepare 

and respond to emergencies that are

What to do if you have to and who should 

be notified. Choose an out- of- area 

emergency contact person who lives far 

enough away not to be affected by the 

same emergency. It may be easier to text 

or call long distance if local phone lines are 

overloaded or out of service. Everyone 

should have emergency contact 

information in writing or saved on their cell 

phones. Paper documents never run out 

of baמּeries. 

• Decide where to go and how to get 

there. You may evacuate to a 

hotel/motel, stay with friends or 

relatives in a safe location, or go to an 

evacuation shelter if available and 

necessary. 

• Practice evacuating from your home 

twice a year. Drive your planned 

evacuation route and plot alternate 

routes on your map in case roads are 

impassable. 

• Plan ahead for the care of your pets. 

Keep a phone list of pet- friendly 

hotels/motels and animal shelters that 

are along your evacuation routes. 

• Take into account the special needs of 

children, seniors, people with 

disabilities, and if you have family 

members who don’t speak English.

PoSSiblE HazarDS: 

• Install smoke detectors on each level of 

your home (and change baמּeries during 

the daylight savings time switch every 

year). 

• Keep an ABC type fire extinguisher on 

each level and get trained in their use. 

• Strap down your water heater to code 

and fit all gas appliances with a flexible 

gas supply line. Have these tasks done 

by a professional plumber and/or 

electrician. 

• Store flammable or highly reactive 

chemicals (such as bleach, ammonia, 

and paint thinners) securely and 

separate from each other. (And away 

from your dwelling if at all possible.) 

• Secure pictures and wall hangings and 

use restraints to secure heavy items 

such as TVs, bookcases and file cabinets. 

• Locate the gas main and other utilities 

and know how and when to turn them 

off. 

• Be sure your home number is visible 

from the street so emergency vehicles 

can find you. 

Experts recommend that you should be 

prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 

three days (72 hrs.) minimum. 

Store your household disaster kit in an 

easily accessible location in your home 

(Consider storing one in each car). Water 

is a critical ingredient. Experts recommend 

1 gallon of water per day per person.

will need to rely on each other to meet the 

immediate lifesaving and life- sustaining 

needs, particularly in isolated 

neighborhoods that may be cut off from 

the main roads due to earthquake or rock 

slide damage. The CERT training program 

is FREE and includes the opportunity to 

join the local team upon completion.

It is important to learn what natural 

disasters typically affect your area and 

what to do when they occur. Read 

through the appropriate Disaster and 

Emergency guides. Get trained in first aid 

and CPR. Watch the weather and stay on 

top of the news if a hurricane or other 

severe weather is predicted to come your 

way. If local authorities are telling you to 

evacuate, then EVACUATE! Too early is far 

beמּer than too late. Your life might 

depend on it. 

If you followed the above advice, then you 

already have planned for the worst, 

prepared for the inevitable, have an 

evacuation plan in place and have the 

knowledge and resources to best keep 

yourself and loved ones safe when disaster

malibu Emergency Preparedness Network 

(EPN) 

If your company experiences a disaster, do 

you have an adequate survival and 

recovery plan in place? According to the 

Contingency Planning Research Strategic 

Corporation, 43% of U.S companies that 

experience a natural or man-made disaster 

never re-open, and another 29% of 

remaining businesses fail within 2 years. 

according to a Touche ross study, the 

survival rate for a company with no 

disaster recovery plan in place is less 

than 10%. 

In recent years the City of Malibu and 

adjacent areas have experienced 

earthquakes, mudslides, landslides and 

multiple major wildfires impacting 

residents and businesses alike. The Malibu 

Chamber of Commerce and the City of 

Malibu's Emergency Services Department 

have joined forces to form the "Emergency 

Preparedness Network" (EPN). The goal of 

EPN is to promote threat awareness, 

disaster preparedness and improve 

disaster survival rates throughout the 

City's retail and professional services 

business community. 

The Malibu Chamber of Commerce and City 

of Malibu have partnered to bring 

emergency preparedness training to 

businesses in Malibu. Through the 

Business Continuity Workshop, business 

leaders are presented with hands-on 

tutorials of the following: 

• Emergency Preparedness Network 

• CERT 

• Fire & Fire Extinguishers 

• Life-Saving First Aid 

• Triage and Rapid Treatment 

• Utility Controls 

• Business Continuity Planning

Continuity Workshop. 

The EPN offers a basic framework to help 

businesses anticipate their particular 

emergency needs and construct a 

preparedness plan for owners and 

employees to follow in case of area-wide

I highly recommend familiarizing yourself 

with the site, signing up for notifications 

which are safety related or important to 

you, and guiding friends and family to the 

useful information. 

Pacific Coast Highway is a California State 

Highway and thus under the management 

of Caltrans, not The City of Malibu. 

Although PCH is Malibu's "Main Street", The 

City requests of Caltrans maintenance and 

safety improvements. In 2015 a significant 

plan was approved and many safety 

improvements are in process to improve 

the safety of PCH.

file an online request through a link on the 

City's website under Public Works/Pacific 

Coast Highway. 

a FEw SimPlE SaFETy 

SuggESTioNS: 

1. Pay aTTENTioN. Focus on driving if you 

are driving. Dangerous conditions can 

arise in an instant, alert focus might 

avoid an accident. 

2. Slow DowN. Most of the accidents on 

PCH are speed related. This does not 

mean the vehicles were speeding, rather 

they were going too fast for the traffic 

conditions. The faster a vehicle is 

traveling, stopping distance is increased, 

and a shorter time to react and avoid 

danger exists. 

3. Slow DowN. Wet conditions worsen 

the stopping factor, and can cause 

hydroplaning when surfaces are flooded. 

4. waTCH For THE uNEXPECTED. Erratic 

drivers exist. Our beautiful coastal 

highway provides many visual 

distractions. Many accidents are caused 

by slowing traffic, vehicles parking and 

exiting parking spots, and driving 

maneuvers which are not safe i.e.: the 

U-turn from a shoulder parking spot. 

5. PEDESTriaNS aND CyCliSTS EXiST oN 

PCH. With the complexity of PCH, please 

be especially considerate to all who use 

it. This includes the pedestrian who may 

have virtually no shoulder to walk on, 

the cyclist who may be avoiding a pot 

hole or a parked car door opening, or a 

Caltrans worker making repairs. The 

volume of cars and speed vary 

dramatically. Safety can be improved 

with alert, aמּentive, aware, focused 

driving at a reduced speed. 

6. THE HazarD oF wilDFirE CaN EXiST

help reduce your risk, such as clearing 

brush surrounding your property. Be 

especially aware in high wind events. 

Review your insurance coverage with 

your insurance agent, especially 

knowledgeable with Malibu’s 

unique aspects.

necessary, prepare the items you would 

take, have computer backups offsite in a

HELLO ARTISTS 

+ DESIGNERS! 

It’s that time of year again. The Malibu 

Chamber of Commerce is currently 

accepting applications for the 45th 

Annual Malibu Ars Festival. The event 

will take place at Civic Center Way on 

July 30 and 31, 2016. Aﬞer last year’s 

festival we sent out an extensive survey 

to a targeted focus group of artists, 

residents and vendors to gain insight 

on the pulse of the festival. 

You spoke and we listened! With that, 

we are thrilled to be sharing some 

forward thinking changes to the festival 

that we believe will increase recognition 

and traffic, position artwork in the most 

aמּractive light as possible and give the 

show a strong future. 

In addition to the huge focus on local 

and national art, we will be adding a 

design element to the festival, including 

clothing design, architecture and 

graphics. Along with live music on our 

upper courtyard stage, there will also 

be actors from local adult and 

children’s theatre groups performing, 

paying homage to another form of 

‘The Arts’. 

I grew up here and I recall this Festival 

being a must-see and must-do 

gathering of our community. We 

celebrate all artists here - we admire 

excellent works no maמּer where you’re 

from. The Malibu Community is truly 

honored to be celebrating this event for 

45 years. 

In summary, we are creating a much 

more interactive event, aמּractive to 

people of all ages and backgrounds, 

something that no one in Southern 

California will want to miss. I hope to 

see you there.
