Seeking Participants for UCLA Research Study
on Long-Term Care
What is the purpose of the research? To learn about...
1. experiences between gay and lesbian (or non- heterosexual) older
adults and long-term care providers and
2. ideas about how long-term care providers can be responsive to lesbian
and gay older people.
Who can participate? Men who are at least 50 years old, have had
contact with long-term care providers, and EITHER:
• Identify as gay, OR BOTH
• have had only male sex partners over the past 20 years
• are only attracted to men
What does participation involve? If you volunteer for this study you will
be asked to participate in a one-on-one interview in which you will answer
questions about your experience of long-term care providers and ideas
about what it means for long-term care providers to be responsive to
lesbian and gay older adults. You will also be asked to provide feedback on
the researcher’s analysis at a later date. You will be able to withdraw from
the study at any time with no penalty. Each participant will receive $40. You
do NOT need to travel to UCLA to participate.

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore
I find it hard to trust ANYONE these
days. Sure, I nod my head, pretending
it’s all good, but in reality I think
you are full of shit. Some people lie
about stupid small things, while others
lie big.
They lie to make themselves look
better. What is wrong with the truth?
It is the truth, isn’t it? Most people
use lying to take-down your socalled
competition. I said it before.
Compete with yourself and you’ll go
further, but you know what’s best,
personal self-destruction. I will
continue to concentrate on myself.
When I am happy, life is amazing.
My life soars without the repetitive
drama. You can walk outside and
you smile just by the ray of sunshine
engorging your vessel. That sounded
a little dirty, but you knew what you
got into when you started reading
this.
Could it be that people don’t appreciate
the small things? Does life really
have to be “go big or go home”?
It sounds like a night on Arenas,
but how long before they go home?
Small things can fulfill big holes. You
remember right? A lot of small gifts
can be more enjoyable than one big
gut filling, single opportunity. Small
isn’t always a bad thing. There are a
lot of small things that I appreciate.
Small thing can and will lead into
larger things. As a precautionary
tale, please remember that greed
always backfires, so why not enjoy
the bounty of the free and small, but
generous and ample gifts?
Peace, Love, and appreciation,

Souren Mousavi - ARTIST IN EXILE
Souren Mousavi was born in Iran in 1969.
Her family ancestry is linked to the Persian
Monarchy.
“Soft Grey” erotic female figure in acrylic
During her childhood she was in the midst
of the Iran-Iraq war, which left a lasting
impact on her life.
We had the pleasure of meeting Souren at
the Indian Wells Art Fair, where her work
was being displayed. It was immediately evident
that she is a person of determination
and passion as she described her work. She
explained that it was her art and her activism
for women’s rights that was the
reason of her exile from Iran. She
graduated from the University of
Tehran with a masters in art. While
attending the University she became
an activist for women’s rights.
She was beginning a promising
career as an artist and graphic designer.
Her art was an expression of
her feelings toward freedom and a
commitment for women’s rights. It
was considered offensive by the respressive
regime for which she was
imprisoned for several dark years of
her early life.
Directly quoting Souren, “the depiction
of the female body evoking,
strength, profanity, regeneration,
and innocence” is found in the
colors, composition, design and
subjects of all of her works.
After find a method to leave the
Iranian prison and immigrate to
England she began to establish herself
as an artist and designer. This
is where we found her at the Indian
Wells Art Fair, displaying and discussion
her work.
Watercolors, acrylic, and oil paintings,along
with drawings, comprise the media of her

art. In her words, “ they evoke recurring
images celebrating the power and dignity of
the female form.... There are reflections of
emotions in the shapes and figures that live
and play.... Each work reveals a compelling
journey of mind, body, and spirit, attempting
to find peace and independence.”

The Desert Rose Playhouse
Presents New Musical JUNK
Rancho Mirage, CA - The Desert Rose
Playhouse, the Valley’s LGBT stage company,
will the World Premiere of a new
musical JUNK by Michael Penny, opening
Friday, April 29, 2016 for a five-week run.
Performances are Fridays and Saturdays
at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2 PM, through
May 29, 2016.
JUNK is about two gay men, one younger,
one older. They have been offered the
contents of the North Carolina cabin of
a recently deceased man in exchange for
cleaning it up so that the house might be
put on the market. It turns out that this
house is stuffed from attic to cellar with the
man’s massive collection of old porn...and
very little else. But as the two sort through
this man’s belongings... something of his
character begins to emerge... and in turn,
something of their own characters as well...
their unusual relationship to one another...
and what it means to be an individual. A
delightfully funny and touching look at a
gay generation gap with book, music and
lyrics by a bright voice in LGBT Musical
Theatre!
Features Jim Strait and Robbie Wayne and
is directed by Steve Fisher. Joel Baker is
Musical Director and Accompanist. Tom
Valach designs the set, and Phil Murphy is

THAT IS FUNNY
What did the Bartender say when two jumper cables walk into a bar. “You guys better not start anything
in here.”
What does a termite say when he walks into a bar? “Is the bar tender here?”
Infinitely many mathematicians walk into a bar. The first says, “I’ll have a beer.” The second says, “I’ll have
half a beer.” The third says, “I’ll have a quarter of a beer.” Before anyone else can speak, the barman fills
up exactly two glasses of beer and serves them. “Come on, now,” he says to the group, “You guys have got to
learn your limits.”
A panda walks into a bar and gobbles some beer nuts. Then he pulls out a gun, fires it in the air, and heads
for the door. “Hey!” shouts the bartender, but the panda yells back, “I’m a panda. Google me!” Sure enough,
panda: “A tree-climbing mammal with distinct black-and-white coloring. Eats shoots and leaves.”

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
Greetings from Erode, India! I have been
traveling the past week with another 10 days
to go to Southeast India. Myself and two nongay
couples are representing the Rotary Clubs
of Riverside and San Bernardino County. In
May, 6 couples from India will travel to our
area.
To think India as we saw in “The Best Exotic
Marigold Hotel” is to not really see India.
It is a vast country of wealth and poverty,
knowledge and illiteracy, great promise and
yet caught in a desire to change but keep their
culture.
Pollution is extreme in the southeast where we
are. Trash, debris, waste in rivers and streams.
Garbage is still burned on the side of the road.
The government is making strides to change
and groups like Rotary are educating folks on
recycling and reuse and eliminating single use
plastic bags, but it will take a generation to
fully see results.
The sights, smells and tastes can be overwhelming
and powerful but entice you to go
further. The people are warm and friendly.
Children are inquisitive and want to know
your name and all about you. Our group is
staying in people’s homes and their generosity
with what they have is stunning. The food is
beyond words.
Families have dogs for pets but we have been
advised not to pet due to fear of rabies, yet we
are encouraged to play with the local cow. It
is an amazing country.
Homosexuality is illegal in India and gay web
sights are banned, though access to apps like
Grindr is available. I, of course, as a single
Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman in Cathedral City.
He has made his name in governmental circles as an
expert in transportation issues and is very active in working
on bringing passenger rail service to the COACHELLA
Valley. Greg was the first openly gay elected city council
members In Riverside County. He has served on the
boards of the National League of Cities and the League of
California Cities and as President of the Southern CA Asso-

of Governments.
Gay man in the Coachella Valley, would never
have use of such apps (cough, cough) I was
amazed at how my in-box exploded upon
opening it here.
Of course, Indians are looking for sex, but
they are craving communication with other
Gay men. They want to know about our life,
our relationships, how marriage works in a
male to male setting and more. Things we
take for granted, but if we think about it, just
short years ago we were struggling for our
basic rights. Men do hold hands here, but as
a sign of friendship, not romantic. However,
you can see the furtive glances, the blush in a
cheek when you smile just so. One thing I do
appreciate in chatting with these young men
is that instead of calling me Daddy and all
that implies, they call me Uncle. Still a sign of
respect, but doesn’t quite make me feel ready
for the walker.
It would do us good in our cocoon of Palm
Springs to look outside and see how we might
help our brothers and sisters elsewhere. In
this election year we need to be asking our
candidates for President how their foreign
policy will work for LGBT rights, not just in
countries we struggle with like Russia, but
what about our friends like India. If we are
willing to tie climate action or labor standards
to trade agreements then rights for LGBT people
