''Welcome to the new Hurrells Seeds amenity grass seed catalogue, where I hope you will
find plenty of inspira on for any seed requirements that you may have.
This year we are improving the plant and seed storage, specifically larger storage areas.
We have introduced automated bagging and handling equipment to speed up produc on.
Therefore the delivery mes will be more rapid. We are also completely replacing all
computer systems and speeding up any enquiries. This uses a new so ware that brings
your account up when you contact us, we can then see mixtures previously used very
quickly!
Hurrells con nue to drive forward with new concepts and cul vars. This year we have new
top performing winter sports cul vars, such as Euro-cordus and Euro-sport.
For fine leaved cul vars we have great selec ons such as Rossiante, which is currently top
of the STRI list, and superb Slender's such as Barcrown and Cezanne.
As a team we are passionate about our subject and we are con nually sourcing and
evalua ng new varie es and their merits.
One of the highlights for 2016 is our new Coldstart Range. We now have 3 Coldstart
mixtures; Coldstart Original 50, Coldstart Professional 80 & Coldstart Total 100. Ceretec
Centurion is a new addi on in two of these mixtures - another winter ac ve cul var.

WILDFLOWER SEED
(1) Site Prepara on
Ÿ Firstly, remove all weeds & plants such as Ne les, Thistles, Docks, Grass etc. This can be done
through spraying the area with a Glyphosate weed killer.
Ÿ For best results you may have to spray the area more than once.
Ÿ The aim is to produce a firm weed free lth to promote healthy germina on.
Ÿ The lower amount of nutrients, the be er the results you will have.

Try to achieve a moderate to low fer lity within the top 15cm of the soil.
Weeds and grasses grow faster than Wild Flowers and will therefore compete and eventually take
over the Wild Flowers. (If the top soil is extremely fer le, remove the top soil to subsoil prior to
sowing).
Ÿ Cul vate the site to a depth of around 10cm (on badly drained or compacted soils -25cm). This can
be done with a fork, petrol ller or on large areas a plough. The site should be cul vated as early as
possible.
Ÿ Measure the area, so you can work out how much seed is required in the next stage
(2) Sowing
Sowing can take place throughout most of the year, providing a good lth can be prepared. However
the months of March/April/August and September are generally most suited.
There are some Wildflower’s that will only grow in certain soils, so make sure you choose the mix for
your soils.
Ensure all the seed is mixed to ensure an evenly spread broadcast.
Seed can be sown by hand for smaller areas, or with a spreader for larger areas.
The seed can be mixed with sand to bulk it up and this helps to get an even spread..
Once sown, rake or harrow the area to mix the seed in the soil approx 0.5cm depth a erwards, its best
to roll the area to compact the soil slightly. If a small area, it can be treaded on to compact the soil.
(3) Future Maintenance
Ÿ In the first year a er sowing, weed control is a priority. If weeds are present they can be controlled
by mowing, pulling the weeds out by hand or spot spraying (however please be careful if spraying).

Ÿ You will only see the Annual Wild Flowers in the 1 year and grasses (if sown with grass)
Ÿ In the 2nd year a er sowing, the Grass and Wildflower’s will be established and annual weeds will
be less of a threat, meaning less maintenance.
Ÿ Perennial & Biennial Wildflower’s will be seen flowering in the second year. The Perennials will then
flower every year a er, and the Annual/Biennial plants will be seen if the seeds are distributed
before removing the clippings.
Ÿ
Wildflower’s should be cut twice a year, once in the spring and once in late autumn a er the plants
produce seed.
Ÿ Cu ng helps eliminate any weeds and dy's the area up.
Ÿ The late autumn cut will distribute seeds produced by the Wildflower’s.
Ÿ The clippings should then be removed off the site to reduce fer lity.
(4) Different Types of Wild Flowers
Annual- these perform their en re life cycle from seed to flower to seed within a single growing season
(mainly Cornfield Wild Flowers are annual)
Perennial- they persist for many growing seasons but you will not see them flower in the first season
(most Wildflower’s are Perennial)
Biennial- they require two years to complete their life cycle, they Flower in the second year only. For
example Foxglove.
