Alpha Upsilon Male Mentoring Program
Voice of the Second District
Alpha Upsilon Brothers with Participants in the Male Mentoring Program
Brooklyn, New York- October 26, 2015. The Alpha Upsilon Project
O.A.S.I.S. Male Mentoring session started off the new school
with a bang. The Brothers escorted 10 boys and two staff members
from Junius Temporary Shelter Home to a Brooklyn Nets pre-season
game on October 5th @ 7:30 p.m. A good time was enjoyed by all.
Tickets were awarded to us by our participation in the Downtown
Brooklyn Neighborhood Alliance. Bro Hayden (Tau Psi ’71) has been
the main contact person for our participation in their raffle. The committee
thanks him for his due diligence in commitment to the program.
Bro Hayden (Tau Psi ’71) and Bro Wilkinson (Nu Tau ’92) were
joined by Bro Keston Frank (Alpha Upsilon’14) who took pictures
that will be posted on the website (www.brooklynomega.org.)
Project O.A.S.I.S (Omega Assisting Scholars Improve Society) is a
social action umbrella program within the chapter that addresses issues
confronting school, youths, and community. The male mentoring
session operates on the Second and Fourth Mondays of the months
from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Brothers participation is always welcomed.
Alpha Upsilon Rugby Social Action Program
Randall’s Island, MY, June 6, 2015, the Men of Alpha Upsilon
Chapter, “Brooklyn Omega”, sponsored the Park Sl ope
School 282 - Brooklyn, NY - Flag Rugby Program for the
Play Rugby USA New York City Rugby Cup tournament.
The Park Slope School 282 Flag Rugby Program is coached by
Brother Kyle Plant and Mr. Zebulon Alexander - both teachers
at the school. Brother Keston Frank, began working
with the Program this year, and is an integral part of the staff.
Brother Plant and Mr. Alexander introduced the game of Rugby to their
students in 2011, and have qualified teams to play in the New York City
Rugby Cup Finals in four out of five years, bringing home four NYC Rugby
Cup Championships with their Elementary, Middle School and All Girls
teams. This year at the 2015 NYC Rugby Cup, Park Slope School 282
was the first Program in tournament history to qualify for the finals in all
three divisions - finishing 2nd in the Elementary and Middle School brackets,
while earning their first All Girls City Championship for the school.
In addition to their current players, the 282 Program had four alumni
players on Championship teams in both the high school Girls and
Boys divisions, and two other players participating in tackle Rugby
State Championships this same weekend. Brother Plant is quoted
as saying “the unintended consequences of introducing Rugby to our
students five years ago are absolutely mind blowing. We thought we
were merely introducing a new activity to keep our students engaged
and plugged into school, when in all actuality we have helped to introduce
a culture and a way of life, while creating another high school/
college scholarship vehicle for our students - our Cardinal Principals
are on full display through the work we do with these young people.”
The Men of Alpha Upsilon are proud to be associated with
18
Park Slope Alumni 282 Girls with the NYC Rugby Championship Trophy
this noble endeavor, and look forward to continued opportunities
to Uplift our Community. We thank our Basileus, Bro Glenn
Chapman for allowing the Chapter branch out into uncharted territory,
and continue to do the good work of Our Omega Dear!
