Making a Tooth Wish!
"I was 7 years old when I first traveled in a different country
with my family. I was so happy, especially when we visited
a carnival in Singapore. I was enjoying the carnival rides but
later that evening, my tooth unexpectedly started to hurt. It
was very painful and I started to cry. When I touched my front
tooth, it was moving badly and I began to panic. I was on
vacation and I didn't want to lose my tooth! My main concern
was how was I going to smile for the photos if my upper tooth
was missing? In the middle of my loud tantrum in the carnival
park, I felt a crack. My tooth fell out. Dad and Mom comforted
me and told me that I still looked good even without my front
tooth. A Filipino tradition is to throw your baby tooth on a roof
and make a wish. So as I was throwing it, I made a wish that
my new tooth would grow in fast. Looking back at our photos, I
was still smiling but without my front tooth." Melissa Del Rosarin

Watch Out for Snakey
"When I was young, I started to have a great fear of snakes. It all
started with a small conversation with my cousin. She told me a
story about a little girl who was locked in a washroom all alone.
When people came back for her, the little girl was gone but they
found a very huge snake. The snake had swallowed her entire
body. This story horrified me! I developed a real phobia of snakes
and had a hard time sleeping some nights. I knew if I saw one, I'd
panic and run away. After a few months, my cousin told me the
story wasn't true and that they made it up to tease me. I learned I
shouldn't believe everything people tell me and some jokes aren't
very funny." Melissa Del Rosario
The Big Competition
"My primary school competed in an annual drum and lyre competition. Our
school was always the champion back then. My parents signed me up to
play the lyre. The training was really tough and as one of the newbies to
the group, I was getting a lot of attention to help me learn. I love music but
for some reason it doesn't come easily for me. After two weeks of hard
training, I felt like giving up. I felt embarrassed in front of other students
who easily learned the lyre rhythms. One day my trainer got impatient
with me and I cried because I couldn't play the tune. Thankfully the trainer
talked with me and told me that I didn't need to do the lyre part. He trained
me to be a baton dancer who front-lines the team. And yes! I excelled in it!
After months of practicing, we won the competition!" Melissa Del Rosario
My Little Bonsai Tree
"My dad gave me a bonsai tree as a gift. He told me to take care of it so it would
grow strong. I really loved my bonsai. I put it in the front porch so it would get
enough sunlight. I checked the tree everyday after school and watered it carefully.
I stared at it and wanted it to grow fast. I carried it inside the house sometimes
because I didn't want anything bad to happen to it at night. After a week, I felt that
the branches had more leaves. I guess I was doing a great job with my little bonsai
tree. After more than a month doing the same routine, my bonsai tree looked pale.
I tried to water it more but it wasn’t working. Soon my bonsai tree lost its glow and
started to die. I was so sad because I did my best to take care of it. But l realized
some things just don't turn out the way you planned." Melissa Del Rosario b

Beastly
creature alien
by McKell, Age 12
Illustrated by Christy Schollen
Once upon a time in a secret laboratory, some
scientists were testing to see if it was possible to
turn a potato into an apple. But the experiment
took a wrong turn and instead they created a new
alien species.
The alien jumped and took off running and
headed straight to the escape pod. He only made
it about 100 ft before security were alerted and
came rushing in. The alien flew the escape pod
and got about 150 feet in the air when security
jumped in their ships to try and catch him.
I've got to get in space and find a new planet
to take over!" said the alien creature. "They can't
catch me!"
"Fly faster! Don't let him get away!" yelled the
scientists.
"We can’t let it escape the fire rage!" exclaimed
the head of security.
The escape pod lit on fire and the alien creature
said, "I'll have to jump and hope for the best. I'll
aim for the planet with the moon." So he jumped,
but he made it farther than he thought. The alien
creature saw more planets
and stars than ever
before. He landed on the
red planet.
"Where am I?" said
the creature. "This is a
beautiful place but I need a bigger
planet to live on." He searched for
a bigger planet.
Then he saw the sun, but he
didn't know what it was and
thought it was just another
planet. He saw fire and lava and
changed his mind about living
there. He searched different
galaxies, planets, stars and rocks
hoping to find a perfect place to
build and rise above. Then he found
Super Earth.
"Perfect! It is miles and miles
away from that planet that I escaped
from," said the creature alien. So he
headed for Super Earth. But then
out of nowhere came a spacecraft.
The creature alien was frozen in fear,
worried and nervous. The space craft
was in the shape of a pig—a huge pig!
And inside were space pigs. The pigs
wanted to help the alien creature get to
Super Earth where they were from and
see if he was fine living there with them.
After speaking with each other for a little
while, the creature alien said, "That sounds like
the kind of planet I am looking for. I was hoping
to find it and now I have. I'll live there with you
pigs."
While they were flying, the creature alien
noticed in space a whole truckload of different
animal species. "Where did they all come
from?" he asked the pigs.

"They came from experiments like you, they had
a hard time escaping so me and my fellow pigs
invented Super Earth to help them. Some came
from Area 51," said the King pig. "In fact there
still could be new helpless aliens in Area 51." The
creature was shocked to hear that.
"So what's your name boy? I'm King Tristan and
I have created this planet for those who need a
place to build and rise above. But you can move
and find a different place to live if you like," said
King Tristan.
The alien creature said, "I like it here, and my
name is Beastly." They soon landed on Super
Earth and Beastly met lots of new alien species.
He became friends with everyone. He met a
space cow, a horse, a chicken, and every other
space farm animal.
Beastly's favorite friend was Jaxen, the space
wolf. They built a kingdom together and became
best friends. b THE END

For this edition of Point Shot, let’s
take a look at all the amazing rookies
we have this year because I cannot
remember a season where we've had
as many great rookies. The season
was supposed to be all about McDavid
and Eichel but because of McDavid’s
injury and how well other rookies have
played, it has not been.
DEFYING HISTORY.

On defense we have Gostisbehere for the Flyers who has 34 points in 41
games and Ristolainen for the Sabres who has 35 points on 60 games.
These guys are big deals considering they are having better seasons than
last year’s Calder Trophy winner (Rookie of the Year) Ekblad who had only
39 points in 81 games as a defenseman for Florida!

In the forward position, we have Larkin who
has 39 points in 59 games for Detroit, Eichel
and Domi have 41 points in 60 games and
Panarin has 57 points in 60 games—good
enough for the sixth most points in the NHL!
Let’s not forget about McDavid who has 27
points in 23 games, which is 1.17 points per
game—second most in the NHL only behind
Patrick Kane! I think it’s safe to say we are
going to be seeing these boys at the top of
the NHL points list in the near future.
Who do you think will win the Calder trophy this year? Panarin?
Gostisbehere? McDavid? Right now I think it will be Panarin but it

THE SUNSET

When I look outside and the sun is just about to set,
And the moon is about to come back and pay its debt,
I see a beautiful array of colors that include yellow, purple and red.
As I turn my head, I see the sun like a little ball of yellow thread.
When I look upon the glamorous sky, I imagine that I can fly.
I am so satisfied with the view, that I let out a gentle sigh.
Then I hear the birds sing so beautifully in symphony,
And I hear the crickets loudly go creek, creek continuously.
I then realize that it is finally time to go inside.
