The postcard inviting us to Parks Marina’s 

annual spring open house went up on our 

fridge the day it arrived in the mail. 

Even our teenage son commented when he 

saw it there: “Are we going?” 

he asked. I imagine 

he’s not that different 

from other males, 

teenage or otherwise, 

as he likes machines 

with power. It doesn’t 

get much better than 

sports cars and sleek 

new boats, so he was 

all about us including a 

trip to the Lakes in our 

Saturday agenda. 

The showroom was 

packed with new boats and water toys, and 

we looked at all of it. With each boat that Sam 

pointed out to me I managed to find a reason 

why it wasn’t “perfect.” Perhaps the color, or 

maybe the way the seating was configured, 

or even that the anchor wasn’t powered. Any 

one of them was nicer than ours, but buying 

a new boat is not only a big decision, it’s an 

investment, and I want to make sure our teenagers 

understand that. 

I believe he thought we might see something 

we just couldn’t live without, so was disappointed 

when we went to the service desk to 

schedule a pick-up date to get our boat out of 

winter storage. 

The next agenda for our day at the Lakes 

included cruising around to see what we’ve 

missed over the winter. New construction is 

always exciting, and I began a mental bucket 

list for the summer of places to go, things to do. 

Spring is always exciting, filled with the promise 

of what’s to come. There’s nowhere that’s 

more evident than the Iowa Great Lakes. 

Can’t wait for summer!

While many turn-of-the-century farmhouses and schoolhouses 

have disappeared from the Iowa landscape in recent years, 

much of the beautiful interior woodwork, flooring, hardware

Birdwatching can be addictive. 

And the Dickinson County 

Nature Center is hoping you get 

hooked. 

They’ll be hosting their first ever 

Bird Watchers Anonymous program 

on Saturday, April 23. 

“People will meet at the Dickinson 

County Nature Center at 9 a.m. and 

will caravan to the local hot birding sites 

around the Lakes area. The trips will last 

until about noon. This trip will involve 

caravanning to Little Swan Lake, Christopherson 

Slough, The Grade and a 

quick stop at Marble Lake,” said Charles 

Vigdal, a naturalist with the Dickinson 

County Nature Center. 

This won’t be the first time that the 

nature center has hosted bird watching 

events, and it won’t be the last. 

“This is a newer program even 

though we have done and are doing 

birding programs this year. We are 

looking to get more people interested 

in this highly addictive hobby of birding. 

Side effects of birding include 

fresh air, exercise and learning about 

nature,” Vigdal said. 

To inspire people to love bird watching, 

they are planning to have these 

events led by local birding enthusiasts. 

“These bird watching programs are 

led by local experienced birders that 

want to get more people outside looking 

to add more birds to their bird 

lists. This specific bird outing will be

led by Lee Schoenewe, local expert 

birder,” said Vigdal. 

This event is a little different because 

people will be able to study 

birds in a number of different environments. 

This go-around the ornithologist 

enthusiasts will be studying 

waterfowl. 

“The group will be looking for various 

species of waterfowl that will be 

finishing up their migration, looking 

for the start of the shorebirds migration 

and any other interesting birds in 

the area,” said Vigdal. 

This event will be held pretty much 

rain or shine so people will want to 

make sure they show up to the event 

dressed properly. 

“People need to dress for the weather 

and for hiking,” Vigdal said. “Bring 

your binoculars and bird books if you 

have them.” 

But don’t worry if you don’t have 

bird books. This event is for both 

veteran watchers as well as beginning 

birders. If you think bird watching 

is something you might enjoy, then 

don’t feel intimidated, Vigdal said. 

Feel free to join in on the fun. 

“Anybody who has an interest in 

birding can come to these birding 

programs,” said Vigdal. “The experienced 

birders get to hone their skills 

and people new to birding get to learn 

from the experienced birders so there 

is something for any level birder.” F

History: 

The term bird watching was 

first used by Edmund Selous in 

1901. His aptly titled book, “Bird 

Watching,” was one of the first 

accounts of birds being sought 

after for aesthetic reasons rather 

than merely a source of food. 

Since then, bird watching, or 

birding, has spawned communities 

of people equipped with 

high-powered optics, handheld 

cameras and backyard bird 

feeders. 

During the Victorian era, bird 

watching was practiced in the 

interest of collecting eggs and 

the skins of exotic breeds. At the 

time, well-to-do collectors in Britain 

were known to utilize contacts 

in the colonies to gain access 

to rare breeds from around the 

world. It wasn’t until the 19th century 

that the cries for conservation 

rang and the first Audubon Society 

was established in America. 

Designed to combat the bird 

trade, Audubon Societies, and the 

Royal Society for the Protection of 

Birds (RSPB) in Britain, paved the 

way for bird watching as a recreational 

activity and furthermore 

the preservation of countless bird 

species.

first adult prom at Calico Skies Vineyard

On Saturday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. 

the winery will host Dancing Through 

the Decades. The night kicks off with a 

social hour as Riviera of Brandon, SD, 

will be preparing a four-course dinner 

to be served at 7:30 p.m. and DJ Chris 

Hintz with Pinnacle Productions will 

be playing everyone’s favorite hits until 

11:30 p.m. invoking nostalgia for 

everyone on the dance floor. 

The idea came about during the 

interview process when events coordinator 

Jenna Legred was hired last May. 

“While interviewing I was asked to 

come up with a list of ideas for possible 

events at the winery and an adult 

prom was one of them,” Legred said. 

“I’d heard of them and knew people 

who’d attended them and thought it 

was a cool idea, so we brainstormed 

ways to put our own twist on it.” 

There will be a photo booth in the 

barrel room and of course all the 

wonderful wines from Calico Skies 

available, as well as assorted craft beer 

and other beverages — something 

that definitely wasn’t on the menu at 

your high school prom. 

“It’s a fun thing to do with your husband 

or wife and a group of friends,” 

Legred said. “It can be like a prom 

do-over, which will be fun, new and 

different in a unique venue like the 

winer.”

guests will be able to vote for the best

9/11 MOBILE EXHIBIT VISITS EMMETSBURG 

Nearly 15 years ago this country 

was shaken to its core by the 

events that unfolded on 9/11. 

Stephen Siller was one of the many 

firefighters and first responders who 

rushed to the scene and gave their 

lives to save others. The Siller family 

established the Stephen Siller Tunnel 

to Towers Foundation in his honor 

and memory. In 2013, the foundation 

dedicated the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile 

Exhibit. 

From April 22-24 that mobile exhibit 

will be on display at the Wild 

Rose Casino and Resort in Emmetsburg. 

Admission is free and it will be 

open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. 

“We are so excited to bring this to 

our community! We have invited all 

of the schools in Palo Alto and surrounding 

counties to come visit this 

exhibit,” Wild Rose general manager 

Amy Rubel said. “It is hard to imagine 

that 9/11 happened 15 years ago. 

Most of the kids that will visit weren’t 

even born yet.” 

The 9/11 Never Forget mobile exhibit 

travels around the country and 

will roll into Emmetsburg in its hightech 

53-foot trailer, which unfolds 

into an 1,100-square-foot exhibit. 

The presentation includes actual 

steel beams from the towers, documentary 

video and recordings of firstresponder 

radio transmissions. 

FDNY firefighters provide guided 

tours as guests learn about what took 

place on that day and hear about the 

experiences of so many who made the 

ultimate sacrifice. 

“I think it is important to share 

history and Wild Rose is proud to 

be a part of that. I hope our community 

comes out to see this amazing exhibit,” 

Rubel said. “We should never 

forget.” F

Stephen Siller: 

Firefighter Stephen Gerard 

Siller was the youngest of seven 

children born to Mae and George 

Siller. At the age of eight, Stephen’s 

father died, and a year 

and a half later he also lost his 

mother, leaving him an orphan 

to be raised by his older siblings. 

For a while Stephen went 

through a period of struggle, but 

thanks to the love of his siblings, 

and the values instilled in him 

by his parents, he grew up to 

be an extraordinary individual 

and dedicated firefighter. More 

than most, he knew that time 

was precious and accomplished 

much in his 34 years. 

On September 11, 2001, Stephen, 

who was assigned to Brooklyn’s 

Squad 1, had just finished 

his shift, and was on his way to 

play golf with his brothers when he 

got word of the first plane hitting 

the Twin Towers over his scanner. 

Upon hearing the news, Stephen 

called his wife Sally and asked her 

to tell his brothers he would catch 

up with them later, and returned to 

Squad 1 to get his gear. 

Stephen drove his truck to the entrance 

of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, 

but it had already been closed for security 

purposes. Determined to carry 

out his duty, he strapped 60 pounds 

of gear to his back, and raced on foot 

through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, 

where he gave up his life while 

saving others. 

Stephen had everything to live for; 

a great wife, five wonderful children, a 

devoted extended family, and friends. 

Stephen’s life and heroic death serve 

as a reminder to us all to live life to 

the fullest and to spend our time 

here on earth doing good – this is his 

legacy.

Committment to course 

rewarded at Rock Valley 

Efforts of membership help club continue 

to evolve into one of Iowa’s best layouts 

Course superintendent Brent Vermeer and clubhouse 

manager Julee Hugie represented the Rock Valley 

Golf Course at the ceremony to 

pick up the Iowa 9-Hole Golf Course of 

the Year award from the Iowa Golf Association 

on April 1, but to hear them 

tell it the members of the club are the 

ones that are deserving of the honor. 

“We really need to give the membership 

credit. They make it all possible 

through their support and their volunteer 

work,” Vermeer said. “At a small course like this, there 

isn’t a big budget to work with most of the time. All of the 

improvements that we’ve been able to make are a direct 

reflection of the members and their commitment to the 

course and the community.” 

Hugie said the award is already a source 

of pride throughout the community. 

“This isn’t just a local thing. It covers 

all the courses in Iowa. It’s definitely 

an honor,” Hugie said. “Rock Valley is a 

community that is just so involved. Even 

the non-golfers have been telling us how 

much they appreciate it. It’s a big deal. 

Out of all the 9-hole courses in Iowa, our 

course in our small little corner of the state won.”

course is like, but they also got the awards process started

“The way that works is your members nominate you. Then you 

get a few letters of recommendation and send them a few pictures 

of the course and they judge it from there,” said Vermeer. 

The Rock Valley Golf Course sits on the side of a hill on the 

south side of the city. 

The hill adds to the challenge of the course, but also provides 

some of the most scenic views in the area. 

“You can actually see all the way to Inwood from the fifth tee,” 

Vermeer noted. 

The layout rolls along the side of the hill with several elevation 

changes. The fairways are lined with mature trees, demanding accuracy 

from tee to green. 

The greens themselves are large with a fair amount of undulation. 

The rough and some mounding do a lot of the work in 

protecting the green, but there are a few bunkers to work around 

as well. 

“It’s a course with a lot of character. It’s shorter, but there are so 

many hills and trees,” Vermeer said. “You get some unique looks 

from the tee boxes. The greens can be a challenge. They aren’t 

severe, but there is plenty of slope.” 

Vermeer had to think about it a little bit when asked what the 

signature hole of the course would be. In fact, he couldn’t choose 

just one. 

The No. 4 hole is a par-4 that measures 364 yards from the 

men’s tees. 

“The trees definitely come into play on a lot of the holes, but 

No. 4 is one that a lot of people talk about. When you are standing 

on the tee, the trees kind of lean in toward the fairway and 

you have just a little gap to put your tee shot through,” Vermeer 

said. 

The No. 5 hole is a 504-yard par-5 that starts you at the highest 

point on the course and drops all the way to the lowest ground at 

the venue. 

“Then on No. 5, right away you’ve got about a 100-foot drop in 

elevation. It’s a little longer hole, and we’ve added some bunkers 

to kind of catch some of the longer hitters,” Vermeer said. “I personally 

think that No. 4 is the hardest though. If you don’t drive 

it straight through the hole you can get into a lot of trouble.” 

The course has undergone several improvements over the last 

few years, including installing a new irrigation system in 2013. 

“That irrigation system cost around a quarter of a million dollars, 

and it was all raised through members pledges and donations,” 

Vermeer said. 

Vermeer said lately there has been some restoration of the existing 

bunkers and the aprons around the green, the addition of 

senior tee boxes and the addition of the bunkers on No. 5. 

The work is always ongoing, and Vermeer speculated the next 

project he’ll undertake is re-leveling a few of the tee boxes. 

The clubhouse has also undergone some major renovations, 

with the most recent being outdoor patio seating that was added 

last year. Hugie estimated that area alone could seat up to 75 patrons. 

“Every year we try to do something new and different,” Hugie

said. “We have a very forward-thinking board. In order to 

stay relevant, you have to continue to evolve.” 

Hugie designs the clubhouse menu offerings. While the 

typical fare for golfers looking for a quick snack is available, 

Hugie puts her own twist on the menu with a few of 

her own special recipes. 

“I’d call it a full menu. We’re not a steak house or anything, 

but we have all the convenience food. We’ll do an 

appetizer buffet. We do have a few signature items,” Hugie 

said. “For a 9-hole course, we serve a lot of food.” 

The flow of traffic stays constant, even in the winter 

months. 

“We stay very busy. We have eight leagues — five men’s 

leagues, two ladies leagues and a couples league, plus we 

have open golf whenever we can,” Hugie said. “You have 

the golf traffic, and we also do events from different companies, 

weddings, Christmas parties.” 

“I bet we didn’t go a month last year where we didn’t 

have our doors open for something,” Vermeer added. 

Hugie said the clubhouse is more than just a hangout for 

golfers. 

“We try to keep it interesting. There is always something 

going on out here,” Hugie said. “It’s kind of become a social 

destination. People that don’t even golf will come here 

and get something to eat or just sit outside and look at the 

scenery.” 

The scenery, and the playability of the course, was great 

early on this year. 

“This is the best I’ve seen the course look for this early 

in the year. We depend so much on the weather around 

here,” Vermeer said. “As much as people wanted to curse 

it at the time, all the snow we had this winter was the best 

thing for the course. It kept it insulated. That’s just what a 

golf course needs. We’re probably a month ahead of normal 

as far as how green it is and how everything is growing 

in.” F

Something’s afoot in Spencer. 

A show is coming to the Spencer 

Community Theatre stage 

that’s got it all. It’s got murder, mystery, 

laughs and music. 

On April 22, “Something’s Afoot” 

by James McDonald, David Vos and 

Robert Gerlach will open at the Spencer 

Community Theatre for a run of 

two weekends. 

The show will run from April 22-24 

and April 28-May 1. 

This show is co-directed by Kathy 

Krebsbach and Jane Jans and features 

a cast of 10. 

“‘Something’s Afoot’ is a fast moving 

musical comedy involving a special 

group of guests invited to a British 

country estate in 1935. All the guests 

believe they are the only one invited. 

This is not the case when they all 

show up to share the weekend in Lord 

Rancour’s estate,” said Krebsbach. 

That’s when things start to go awry. 

People start to die off, but not in stereotypically 

morose ways. Death is, 

in fact, funny, with some of the way 

these guests kick the bucket. 

“One by one they are killed off in 

several comedic events,” Krebsbach 

said. “There are several catchy tunes 

and many dancing scenes. The audience 

will be thoroughly entertained 

with all the antics of the actors.” 

It is a show that features a plot that 

will keep you guessing all the way 

through until the end. 

For many in the cast, as well as the 

show’s directors, this is not their first 

time appearing on the Spencer Community 

Theatre stage. 

“Jane and I did direct together last 

season for ‘Sylvia.’ We have both been 

on stage, behind the scenes backstage 

and called as stage managers many 

productions and I have directed several 

other productions,” Krebsbach 

said. “We also work on set and props, 

we do enjoy working together very 

much. It seems to be in our blood, 

we both love being a part of the SCT 

family.” 

The dedicated crew has been rehearsing 

four days a week since February, 

and they are more than excited 

that all of their hard work is about to 

pay off. 

“It takes an army to pull a production 

together. We have also been 

building the set since February working 

every weekend, and what a detailed 

set it is,” Krebsbach said. “Our 

favorite parts of the play are how well 

everyone works together and so willing 

to feed off each other’s role. This 

is a great cast to work with, some are 

veterans at SCT and we have a few 

newer cast members that fit right in.”

Taste of Home Cooking Show 

Drop your whisks, grab your 

friends and join in for a night 

of food and fun at the Taste of 

Home Cooking School show live at 

the Grand Falls Casino & Golf Resort 

Event Center. Exhibit booths will be 

open from 5-7 p.m., and the cooking 

show starts on stage at 7 p.m. 

During this interactive event, watch 

top culinary expert Guy Klinzing demonstrate 

new recipes that can easily be 

re-created at home. 

Not only will those attending leave 

the event with new recipe ideas, they’ll 

go home with a valuable gift bag 

filled with an assortment of products 

and coupons, including two “Taste of 

Home” magazines. There also will be 

a chance to win one of many exciting 

door prizes.

Make Your Own Hand-Dyed 

Scarf 

Arts on Grand is excited to host DIY Eco- 

Dye with Kris Hackbart on Thursday, April 

21. In this class, Kris will teach students 

how to utilize plant material, such as leaves, 

flowers and indigo dyes to create stunning colorful 

effects on silk scarves. 

Kris Hackbart is a pastor at the Ruthven United 

Methodist Church and an avid fiber artist. 

Besides spinning, dyeing, knitting and weaving, 

she also enjoys making her own soaps, lotions 

and other spa goods for her business, The 

Big Boat. She currently sells her own eco-dyed 

scarves at Arts on Grand, located in Spencer, IA. 

DIY Eco-Dye with Kris Hackbart will be held 

at Arts on Grand on Thursday, April 21 from 

6-9 p.m. Students can expect to make two 

scarves and all materials are provided.
