Learn with Me
Earth Day, which was established in 1970 in the US, is celebrated on 22nd April each year. It is a day
to think about our planet and what we can do to keep it special; to think about saving water and energy,
reducing pollution, recycling, protecting our animals, trees and plants, and generally getting to know
how we can protect the environment.
Here are some quick ideas for celebrating Earth Day
- Plant a tree.
- Go for a bike ride or a long walk (leave the car behind).
- Go out into the garden or park in teams to collect various items you find in nature.
- Talk about saving water when brushing teeth and saving energy by turning off the lights when
you leave a room.
- Bake your favorite cookie or biscuit recipe and decorate it with icing to look like the planet earth.
- Gather family and friends together and have a picnic with a litter clean-up concept.
- Set up a recycling centre in your home or school.
- Look through your shelves and find some books to give away to your local charity shop or library.
It is very important to know how to help the environment by recycling!
4

Know the Three R’s:
Reduce - reduce the amount of things you buy and use and you will have less to throw away.
Reuse - keep using the same things as many times as you can,
Recycle - find new ways to use old things.
What is Pollution?
Well, what is it? Stinky stuff? Grease? Poison?
Yes, all those things... and more. Some is obvious like smoke which
you can see but much of it is not obvious at all. Yet you’re eating it and
drinking it and breathing it most of the time. What is worse is that all this
stinky stuff affects all other life on Earth.
You can find pollution made by people just about everywhere on the planet.
These nasty things kill many animals and make others sick. They also kill people and make them ill too.
There’s nowhere on the planet left with no pollution; not even the bottom of the sea or high up in the air.
This is bad news and I’m very sad about it.
But I’m less sad now.
Why?
Because I can warn you and because I know you children can help. It’s not your fault. It’s the fault of
grown-ups who made all this mess, often because they didn’t even realize what they were doing.
By caring today, you will protect your own future!
Why should we recycle?
Recycling or making new things from recycled ones takes a lot less money, much less energy, and saves
a lot of the Earth’s natural resources, thereby helping the environment.
Recycling also saves space in landfills. Instead of your garbage being thrown away and taking up space
and possibly damaging the environment it’s better to recycle it.
The energy saved by recycling also results in less pollution and we all know how bad pollution is to our
environment. When you make new products from old but still useful materials think about the natural
resources that are saved because of the material from old products that would otherwise have been thrown
away.
What kind of materials can we recycle?
Paper, glass, cardboard, aluminum cans, steel cans, and other metals can all be recycled. Plastic
bottles can also be recycled to make new products.
All about Plants!
Why do plants begin to grow in Spring? Plants lose their leaves and colors over the winter due to the
lack of sun that warms the soil and the air. In order for plants to grow, they need special conditions that
are only met in spring in order for them to grow fresher and more beautiful. Plants need water, light,
warmth and soil to grow. The showery weather gives them the water they need. The longer days mean
they have more daylight and warmth from the sun which warms the temperature of both air and soil.
Why are plants important for us and the earth?
Plants play a very big and important role in not only humans’ lives, but also the earth. We
grow plants in schools, roadsides, gardens, offices and many other places for health and beauty.
Their presence is important for clean air, food and water. Our planet earth is called a green planet
due to presence of plants alone.
Below is some of the use of plants to humans’ lives
1- Food: Plants are the main source of food. They provide us proteins and carbs. Plants produce their
own food and store some of it in the form of fruits and vegetables.
2- Shelter: Plants are important sources for shelter. From them, we get wood to produce furniture, such
as, doors, chairs, shelves and so on.
3- Clothing: Plants are the largest providers of clothes.
4- Medicines: Plants are a great source of medicine. Medicines from plants are safer.
5- Source of Vitamins: Plants are the largest source of essential vitamins to the body.
6

Importance of plants to Earth
1- Support rainfall: Plants and trees have a cooling effect on the air leading to rainfall.
2- Support for birds and animals: Plants are the best shelter places for birds and a few animals like
monkeys & squirrels to live. Birds build their nests for eggs, sleep, hunt and safety on the trees. In
forests, animals can take shelter under trees in heavy summers and rain.
3- Reduce pollution: Growing plants on the road side and parks helps minimize the pollution.
Plants provide us with oxygen that we need to breathe and minimize pollution.
Types of plants
1- Cactus plants: Plants that grow in hot and dry weathers.
2- Flowers
3- Herbs: Herbs are used to produce medicines.
4- Shrubs and Bushes: Woody plants.
5- Trees
Papar is very fond of getting her demands done her way! She wants
Be Fit with Me
Why healthy eating?
More than 1 in 4 preschoolers are overweight or obese. Being overweight is a risk to physical and
mental health. Poor nutrition contributes to weight gain. Young children need to eat
nutritious foods because their bodies are growing rapidly. Children learn health (or unhealthy)
eating habits at a very young age.
We all need to eat lots of different foods to keep healthy.
We need to eat and balanced and varied diet.
EAT RIGHT;
GROW STRONG
Variety of Healthy Foods
Water is essential to keep healthy. It keeps us hydrated and helps us digest food. Water is the best
choice for thirsty children.
Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
A variety of fruits and vegetables give children vitamins and minerals that keep them healthy and
help them grow. Fruits and vegetables are “nutrient dense” meaning that they have lots of nutrients
but few calories, unless too much butter, cheese, or meat fat is added.
100% fruit and vegetable juices are good but less nutritious than the foods themselves.
Carbohydrates
One of the most important parts of the diet is carbohydrate for energy. Body cells need energy for
processes such as growth, repair and movement. Carbohydrates in the diet provide this immediate
source of energy. They are found in bread, rice, beans, milk, popcorn, potatoes, cookies, spaghetti,
and corn for example.
Fats
We need some fats in our diet, but not many. Fats give us energy and can be stored in the body to be
used when the body needs energy. Fats are needed by the body for things like making new cells, to
keep our internal organs safe, to store energy and to make certain hormones. Meats, dairy products;
milk, butter, cream, nuts and vegetable oils supply most of the fats.
20

Proteins
Proteins are the building blocks of all cells. They are essential for the healthy growth and repair of
body cells and tissues. Proteins cannot be stored in the body and about 80g per day is required every
day. Any excess protein is broken down in the liver and we get rid of it when we go to the toilet. Milk,
meat, eggs and cheese supply a lot of protein.
Calcium
We need calcium to build strong and healthy bones and teeth.
Dairy products like cheese, milk and yoghurt contain lots
of calcium.
Grains and Sugars
Fiber helps in digestion and helps children feel full. Try and
eat high-fiber whole grain foods at least once every day.
Sugary and salty foods have a lot of “empty calories” – they
are often high in fat and calories but have little nutritional value.
Eat these only occasionally.
“
THINGS FOR PARENTS TO REMEMBER
- Children will eat!
- Children are capable of regulating their food intake.
- Children generally react negatively to new foods, but will usually accept
them with time and experience.
- Caregivers can either support or disrupt children’s food acceptance and
regulation.
“
OUR COLORFUL WORLD
Billy has a dog named Fluffy. They decided to go to a trip in a spaceship to look for animals in space.
Fluffy sees a planet. Billy sees that everything on this planet is red. He says to Fluffy “Everything on
this planet is red, the trees are red and the leaves are red. But there are no animals here”.
Fluffy the dog, sees another planet. Everything on this planet is yellow. The sky is yellow, volcano is
yellow and clouds are yellow. There are no animals here too.
As they move in the space, they see another Planet. Everything on this planet is blue. This planet is
very hot. There is a big blue sun, and a desert with blue sand. There are blue plants, but, there are no
animals on this blue planet.
Fluffy sees another planet. It is planet Earth. The sky is blue and the sun is yellow. The grass is green,
and the flowers are red and pink. Billy asks Fluffy, “What other colors can you see?”
Wow, Billy and Fluffy know that Earth is the best planet, as there is life on this planet and so many
colors that bring happiness to our life. Billy told Fluffy that we should take care and keep our planet
Earth clean because it is the only place we can live on.
The Grey Fountain
Once upon a time, a boy was walking through a wood and he thought he could
hear a sad cry, as though someone was crying while singing. Following the sound
he came to a big, round, mysterious, grey fountain. The sad sobbing seemed
to be coming from the fountain pool. The boy swept aside the pool’s dirty surface water and saw a
group of grey fish swimming in a slow circle through the pond.
With each lap they made, their little voices opened and out came the sobbing sound.
Amused by this, the boy tried to catch one of these incredible talking fish. But when he stuck his arm
into the water it turned grey right up to the elbow. As this happened, a huge sadness entered into him,
and he suddenly understood how sorrowful the fish was feeling. He felt just like the earth on his arm;
dirty and contaminated.
He quickly pulled his arm out of the water, and ran from that place. But the arm stayed grey, and
the boy continued feeling sad. He tried so many times to cheer himself up, but nothing worked. That
was, until he realised that if he were to make the Earth happy then that happiness would be, in turn,
transmitted back to him, through the earth on his arm.
From then on he set about looking after the countryside. He cared for the plants, he did what he could
to keep the water from being polluted, and he encouraged others to do the same. He was so successful
that his hand started to recover its normal colour. When the grey had disappeared
completely, he started feeling happy again, and he decided to go and visit the fountain. When he was
still some way from the fountain he could hear the fish singing happy hymns, and he heard them
joyfully splashing in the crystal clear waters of that magic fountain.
It was plain to see that the Earth had returned to its original happiness; and the boy felt even happier at
the sight.
25

The Red Moon
There was once a little grey planet that was very sad. The people living there didn’t look after it, given
that they had all the inventions and space ships they could ever need. They had contaminated the whole
countryside so much with rubbish and pollution that there were no plants or animals left.
One day, a little boy was walking on the planet, when he passed a cave and noticed a small red flower
inside. The flower was very sick - almost dying - so the boy carefully dug up the flower, with roots,
soil and everything. Then, he started looking for a place where he could look after it. He searched all
over the planet, but everywhere was so contaminated that there was no place the flower could possibly
live in. Then he looked up at the sky and noticed the moon. It seemed to the boy that maybe the plant
could survive there.
So the little boy put on his astronaut suit, and climbed into a space ship. He put the little red flower in
the back, and off they went to the moon.
Far away from all that pollution - and with the boy visiting it every day to take care of it - the flower
started to grow. The flower was so well cared for, that it had soon germinated, giving birth to others, and
these other flowers spread onto other flowers. Before long, the whole moon was completely covered with
flowers.
That’s why, whenever the little boy’s flowers open up, for a few minutes the moon takes on a soft red
sheen, like a warning light. Maybe it’s telling us that if you don’t look after your planet, a day will come
when flowers will only be able to grow on the moon.
pack’s favorite, but a hopeless goof ball. To become a leader and win
back Bianca’s love, Grey goes off into the woods, where he discovers
a camp of Gypsy rabbits. The fortune-teller rabbit Mami gives him
a magical “transmutation potion.” Grey drinks the potion and goes
back to the wolves’ den, but finds out upon arrival that he has been
transformed into... a ram!
of buying her flowers as usual, but I knew she would prefer a FOREVER bouquet. I surprised her by a
handmade bunch of flowers and crafty card that reads emotion and tenderness. I was very happy
and she felt so special."
