MESSAGE FROM THE
CHAIRPERSON
Welcome to the first member newsletter for 2016 and welcome to our new
and improved look.
I hope you all enjoyed some time off over the Christmas break to unwind
and relax with loved ones and are ready for what the New Year has in
store.
Darkinjung has certainly hit the ground running in 2016.
We were thrilled to see the start of the school year and the opening of the
brand new Darkinjung Barker College at Yarramalong. Twenty five eagerly
awaiting students laced up their shoes and grabbed their pencil cases and
backpacks in preparation for their first day at the new campus.
The new school is a partnership between Darkinjung and Barker College
– a Sydney-based private school – and will see students benefit from a
fantastic educational environment right here on the Central Coast.
The New Year has also brought with it the completion of our wonderful
artwork project at Terrigal – the Painting of the Hoardings. The final
artwork was installed in early February and is the culmination of over two
years’ work. This project has been an exciting celebration of Indigenous art,
culture and heritage and we are incredibly proud to be able to bring this to
the Central Coast community.
Darkinjung continues to offer opportunities for the growth and
development of our young community members during 2016, with the
introduction of a school-based traineeship with the Commonwealth Bank.
Seven year 11 students recently started their two-year traineeship and will
undertake their Certificate II in Business Services.
Looking to the future, we are working on updating our Community
Land Business Plan for a further three years. Developing an innovative
and sustainable plan for the Land Council is crucial to the success of
Darkinjung and allows us to continue to achieve our goals and targets.
Finally, we look forward to bringing you some fantastic events this
year including the annual NAIDOC Week celebrations which is always a
favourite amongst our members. To stay updated on what is happening at
Darkinjung please keep an eye on our Facebook page.
I look forward to another successful year for Darkinjung and our
community.
