Grass seed availability for the first half of 2016 

should be no problem for all landscape mixtures. 

Prices have remained stable for Bluegrass, Fine 

Fescue and Perennial Ryegrass varieties, and 

have been reduced for most Tall Fescue blends 

and mixtures! 

The grass seed shortages that you may be 

hearing about revolve around the very elite 

varieties of Kentucky Bluegrass and Tall Fescue. 

Availability of “Sod Quality” top of the line 

varieties, free of all “problem” weeds and 

grasses such as Poa Annua and Poa 

Trivialis, are very difficult if not impossible to 

find today. 

Why? Grass seed production in the 

Western States of Oregon, Washington 

and Idaho is under severe pressure from 

competing crops for the use of this valuable 

farmland. Farmers in these states are finding 

alternative crops to grow on their land, such 

as hazelnuts, that are much more profitable 

to grow than grass seed. Couple this with 

the fact that many of the top grass varieties 

are not the best seed producers, and you 

have a shortage of many top quality elite 

grass seed varieties in the marketplace.

growing turfgrass, we have seen all sorts of 

“miracle products” all proclaiming to grow your 

turf faster, better, and healthier! For the most 

part, we could never see where these products 

ever worked ... perhaps the words “expensive 

pig slop” defined our opinions of most of these 

products … until we tried humic substances. 

When you are a sod producer, and the roots 

of your grass have not developed to the point 

where they hold the sod together enough to 

harvest the sod without it falling apart as you 

harvest it, you will try anything to develop 

roots quickly. Green Velvet had been hearing 

about the new “humic substances” entering 

the market, and tested them out. Much to 

our amazement, we were able to harvest 

the treated sod 2-3 months earlier than the 

untreated turf – proving that these products do 

indeed enhance root growth! But as an added 

benefit, we also noticed improved turf quality 

and color, superior stress tolerance, and less 

wilting in drought conditions.
