STORY
In August 2015 SchoolCare were approached by The Victory Primary
School to provide options to replace thier aging 802.11n wireless
network which had been in service for nearly 5 years.

The previous Meru 802.11n wireless network was installed by
SchoolCare 5 years earlier as part of the original build project and
had served the school well, as the school’s ICT requirement have
evolved so have the demands on the wireless network.

THE CUSTOMER
The Victory Primary school is a 5 year old school based in Portsmouth
which was built to serve the needs of the local area and since 2013 has
been part of the United Learning Academy.
Since the school opened, there has been a strong focus on the provision
of high quality and modern ICT. The use of mobile ICT has been
paramount to the school’s ICT ethos and as such a robust and reliable
wireless network has been the cornerstone of the ability to deliver this
vision.
THE CHALLENGE
SchoolCare have been involved with the provision of ICT Services
at The Victory Primary school since it was built and undertook the
design and installation of the initial 802.11n wireless network.
Over it’s 5 year history the school have invested heavily in mobile ICT
and as such the demands on the wireless network have increased.
The school are now using multiple full classes of mobile devices,
which include tablets and laptops all of which demand a stable
network capable of delivering high bandwidth.
The school’s eco-friendly construction includes a large amount of
foil backed insulation, as well as coated glass, designed to make the
site as energy efficient as possible. Whilst the building is incredibly
well insulated against heat loss, it does make it very inhospitable
to WiFi.
The deployment of WiFi in an education environment is particularly
challenging due to the high density of wireless clients in a given
area. High client density is a major hurdle which many wireless
vendors fail to address.
THE SOLUTION
SchoolCare has a long history delivering ICT solutions to schools
from industry leading “best of breed” vendors.
Ruckus Networks were one of the first WiFi vendors to market with
an 802.11ac solution capable of delivering near Gigabit speeds to
wireless clients.
As part of its MyCloud School portfolio of managed network services,
SchoolCare offer MyCloud Managed WiFi. This cloud managed
controller-less solution reduces capital expenditure whilst offering
a fully managed WiFi feature set.
Ruckus Networks have a number
of patented technologies which
make their solution particularly
suited to the education
environment;
Ruckus BeamFlex+ uses a number
of individual internal antennas
which can direct the wireless
signal wherever it is required,
ensuring interference is avoided
and wireless clients are offered
the best and fastest data patch
back to the network or internet.
Ruckus BeamFlex+ should not
be confused with Transmit Beam
Forming (an integral part of
the 802.11ac standard). Ruckus
BeamFlex+ does not require
specific client support (unlike
Tx Beam forming) and offers
massive benefits to all client
types on the network.
As part of the deployment,
SchoolCare deployed 16 access
points covering the key areas of
the school. A full site survey was
completed after the installation
to ensure good wireless coverage
throughout the site. The survey
was also performed with school
owned devices to confirm real
world coverage.
THE RESULTS
After the upgrade 802.11ac
wireless clients were able to
achieve link speeds of 866Mbps
and throughput of around
500Mbps under test.
Coverage and connection link
quality was also improved
massively after the deployment.
