WWF challenges schools
to #WearItWild
In a bid to help protect threatened wildlife around
the world, WWF is challenging schoolchildren to
Wear it Wild on Friday 27 May.
WWF’s annual fundraising event Wear it Wild,
supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery,
challenges pupils, teachers and even parents on
the school run to dress up and show their wild side
to help protect our incredible wildlife. Whether
sporting their tiger stripe jumpers or going wild in
their leopard print onesies, WWF is urging them to
Wear it Wild for a day and love wildlife forever.
Using Wear it Wild’s downloadable curriculumrelated
resources, pupils will also discover more
about their favourite wild animals and see their
amazing world through their eyes. Everyone can
A string of successes for
Two Mile Ash School
The Easter holidays brought many good news stories to
Two Mile Ash School. Ranked as Outstanding for nearly
two decades, TMA has been awarded the sponsorship
of two new schools (Whitehouse and Fairfields) which
form part of the Western Expansion Area in Milton
Keynes.
Two Mile Ash has a long history of working in
collaboration with schools both in Milton Keynes and
beyond. For 15 years Two Mile Ash has been an Initial
Teacher Training Provider and is a Teaching School
running development courses and supporting schools
that are in need of improvement. In 2015 TMA was
recognised by the Regional Commissioner and awarded
sponsorship status because of the impact they have had
on school improvement.
In addition Two Mile Ash School has gone from
strength to strength. Providing all round Outstanding
education to 680 pupilsit was recently ranked highly
in the oneMK Good Schools’ Guide. This coupled with
the Outstanding Teacher Training department being
ranked in the top ten of national providers, means there
really is much to celebrate. It is for these reasons that the
natural next step for the experienced leadership team at
Two Mile Ash was to establish a Multi Academy Trust to
develop a family of schools whose purpose is to inspire
the futures of children through learning.
The two new schools, which are yet to be named,
along with TMA, will be the first to come under the new
Multi Academy Trust, called ‘Inspiring Futures through
Learning’. The school in Whitehouse will open in
September 2016 and the school
in Fairfields in September 2017.
Both schools are already under
construction.
take part in Wear it Wild on Friday 27 May. Simply
visit: wwf.org.uk/wearitwild, dress up and donate
to help protect our wildlife and our planet.
Don’t forget to share #WearItWild so we can see
what you have planned.
MK Inclusive Tennis
MK Inclusive Tennis are currently offering
free disability tennis to children and young
people aged between 11 – 15 years of age in
Milton Keynes. Disability tennis sessions are
available for wheelchair users, the blind/visually
impaired and the deaf/hearing impaired. This
has been made possible thanks to funding
from Sportivate (Sport England). They also run
accessible and affordable tennis lessons for
children after school at a number of locations
throughout Milton Keynes.
Sessions are available at secondary schools
and community centres to enable children
between the ages of 5-11 to access and play
tennis without
the need for
an expensive
membership
of a tennis
club. Whilst
learning about
tennis, they
also promote
higher
self-esteem,
optimism, a healthier lifestyle, discipline,
responsibility and teamwork. Current locations
include: Bletchley, Denbigh, Walnut Tree,
Wolverton and Newport Pagnell.
All of the sessions are led by fully qualified,
LTA registered, DBS checked and First Aid
trained coaches who have been working with
children for many years. All equipment is
provided free of charge so all the children need
to do is come dressed for sport and bring a sense
of fun!
Tennis is a wonderfully social sport to play
and can really help with hand/eye coordination
and the ABCS of early years – agility, balance, coordination
and speed.
Almost 87% of parents applying
for a primary school place for
their child in Buckinghamshire
have been offered their first
preference this year.
The figures show an increase of
2.5 per cent on last year in terms of
children being allocated first choices.
Cllr Zahir Mohammed, Cabinet
Member for Education and Skills at
Buckinghamshire County Council,
hailed the news as
‘highly encouraging’
and said: “It’s
reassuring to know
that we are improving
year on year and that
the vast majority of
families do obtain
offers for their first
preference primary
schools. We were also
pleased to see a sharp
decline in the number of children
who weren’t offered any of their
preferences.
“We know what an important and
potentially anxious time this is for
parents, so we will do our utmost
to try to achieve the best possible
outcome for those who, for whatever
reason, are not offered a school of
their choice.”
This year, there were 6385
primary school applications - 22
more than this time last year - from
Buckinghamshire residents. Of these,
5538 were offered first preference.
Those who didn’t get any of their
preferred schools equated to 3%, a
drop from last year’s figure of 4.95%.
Cllr Mohammed added: “All
children who have made an
application have places offered
and there are still nearly 400 places
remaining across the county.”
what’s on where
What My first year at Aylesbury
Grammar School means to me
‘Respect & Aspire’. When I first joined AGS I didn’t have a clue
what this motto meant. It took me a while before I realised the full
meaning of this phrase, which as a school, we all try to follow.
Including this in school life was quite a challenge, but after thinking
about these words, I began to appreciate the significance of our
motto. Respecting one another is important whether this is teachers,
classmates, parents or ourselves. We treat each other with kindness
and help anyone who needs it. Aspiring can be more of a challenge,
as we must always try to do our best. We aspire to work hard and to
give our all in any situation.
Settling in was much easier than expected. With the help of friendly
staff, everyone managed to combat their fears. I have had lots of
great experiences, on trips, on the bus, or just around school because
every part of the day is fun – lessons included! I am proud to be a
student at AGS and I’m sure anyone considering joining would be too.
As a school and as a community, we all strive to Respect and Aspire
at this brilliant school.
Healthy Family
(In association with Public Health England)
Dr Justin Varney,
Interim Deputy
Director for Health
and Wellbeing
(Healthy People)
from Public Health
England, gives us
an insight into the
current state of the health of
the average UK family.
The state of the
nation’s health
Obesity, poor diet and physical
activity are three of the biggest
problems to affect the health of
families in England. They are
directly responsible for many of
the preventable conditions such as
type two diabetes, heart disease,
stroke and kidney disease that are
impacting on people’s lives and
causing early death.
Around 40% of ill health in this
country could be prevented by
people leading a healthy lifestyle,
including eating a balanced diet
and being regularly active to
improve the quality and length of
our lives. We know that choices
made about diet and exercise at
every age can make a difference
to health in both the short and
long term. Fundamentally it’s
never too late to make a change.
Supporting individuals and
families to make a healthy choice
is at the heart of Public Health
England’s (PHE) mission.
Obesity
Obesity and being overweight
is a complex problem and is
one of the biggest health issues
facing families in England today.
People rarely become overweight
overnight; obesity is the result of
bad choices made repeatedly over
time, the extra sugar cube in the
daily cup of tea, the treat cakes
that become everyday habits, the
sugary drink that undoes all the
hard work from the swimming
pool, the sofa day that becomes
supper in front of the TV every
night. These everyday habits can
lead to piling on the pounds and
it’s this gradual weight gain that
makes it so hard for families and
parents particularly to step in
early. There is no single ‘silver
bullet’ solution to tackling obesity.
Today 1 in 4 people in England
are obese and over a third (37%)
are overweight. We know that
almost one in ten 4-5 year olds
are obese (9.5%) and by age
10-11 this doubles to nearly one
in five (19.1%). Obese children
are more likely to experience
bullying, low self-esteem, anxiety,
depression and have a higher risk
of developing type 2 diabetes and
heart disease as adults.
Many of us who struggle
with weight issues know that
getting back to a healthy weight
is a journey that takes time and
continued support from family and
friends. Families working together
to make healthier choices is a
great way to help anyone deal
with weight issues, whatever their
age, and make it fun and part of
everyday life.
Simple steps to improve the
family diet and get everyone more
active every day will help the
whole family achieve and maintain
a healthy weight.
Diet
Tackling our high sugar
consumption is an area of
particular focus for PHE. The
Scientific Advisory Committee on
Nutrition (SACN), an independent
expert body, has looked at the
link between sugar consumption
and a range of health issues,
and found that too much sugar
is detrimental for health. It now
recommends that no more than
5% of our daily calories should
come from sugar, down from the
previous recommendation of 10%.
The government has adopted
this as official dietary guidance
which now means adults are
now consuming over double the
amount of sugar, and children
and teenagers almost three times
as much.
The latest statistics from the
National Diet and Nutrition
Survey (NDNS) showed that
sugary drinks are the largest
contributor to sugar intake in
teenagers. Twenty nine percent
of the sugar in teenagers’ diets
comes from sugary drinks (16%
for younger children 4 to 10
years), one in three five-year olds
have tooth decay.
Parents and carers can help
their children achieve and
maintain a healthier weight by
following a balanced diet as
shown in the eat well plate,
choosing ‘me sized’ meals,
avoiding sugary drinks and snacks
high in sugar, salt or fat. Too
much fat or sugar contributes
towards excess calorie intake,
which overtime can lead to
weight gain.
Physical Activity
As well as helping to maintain a
healthier weight, being physically
active encourages healthy
development of bones and muscles,
it improves concentration and
learning, develops confidence
and improves sleep. But most
importantly it makes you feel good
and is fun!
In 2011, the UK Chief Medical
Officers launched guidelines for
physical activity, Start Active, Stay
Active. These outline the quantity
and types of physical activity
necessary for good health at
different ages.
These guidelines encourage
physical activity from birth,
particularly through floor-based play
and water-based activities in safe
environments. For pre-school aged
children who are capable of walking
unaided, at least 180 minutes
(3 hours) of physical activity is
recommended spread throughout
the day. Anything from running
or skipping to playing with balls
counts, so it is easiest to mix it up.
For children and young people
aged 5-18 years, at least 60
minutes of at least ‘moderate’ to
physical activity (i.e. makes you
breathe faster and feel warmer)
is recommended every day. On at
least three days a week children
should do activities to strengthen
muscles and bone, such as
climbing in the park.
All children and young people
should minimise the amount of
time spent being ‘sedentary’
(sitting or being restrained) for
extended periods, except time
spent sleeping.
The most recent statistics show
that we are far from meeting these
recommendations:
• At ages 2-4 years only
one in ten children meet
the guidelines (boys 9%,
girls 10%). There is a high
proportion of ‘low levels’ of
activity in this age group
• For 5-15 year olds only two
in ten meet the guidelines
(boys 21%, girls 16%)
• Physical activity is
declining amongst
children and young people;
between 2008 and
2012 the number of boys
achieving the guidance
fell from 28% to 19% and
girls from 19% to 16%
Sedentary behaviour has been
identified as an area of particular
concern, with around four in
ten children aged 5-15 years
physically inactive (boys 39%,
girls 45%). For all age groups
and sexes, levels of sedentary
time are higher at weekends
compared to weekdays.
• On weekdays, fewer than
1 in 10 children under 10
are sedentary for six hours
or more. The proportion of
children aged 13-15 years
is much higher, at 1 in 4 for
boys and 1 in 16 for girls
• At weekends, there is
a steady increase from
the youngest age group
(around 1 in 10 to the
oldest (43% of boys and
37% of girls)
Sedentary behaviour habits
appear to be formed in early
childhood and develop during
adolescence and into adulthood
with screen time, including TV
and internet viewing the biggest
contributor.
When we talk with families
about becoming more active,
it’s great to see how families
really view this as fun family
time. Whether it’s about walking
the kids to school on the way
to work, or having family time
in the park at the weekend with
a football, going to a local tea
dance with granddad or granny,
being active everyday should
be fun and about spending time
with family and friends.
Pen and Ink
Vocabulary forms one of the linchpins of the 11+ test.
Half of the test is Verbal Reasoning, and it is tested in
many forms.
Preparation for a good vocabulary starts as soon as
children begin to read. It is the breadth and scale of their
reading that is key. Novels, comics, instructions, recipes
– a wide variety of reading sources will go a long way to
building a strong vocabulary. Much of the preparation for
the test itself includes time spent simply learning new
words and their: Antonyms (opposite words); synonyms
(words with a similar meaning); homonyms/homophones
(words with a similar sound and a different spelling);
and homographs (words with double meanings). Trying to
work out the meaning of a word from the context is also
important. Comprehension work is critical in this respect,
and in particular, for the Cloze part of the test. This is
when words from a passage are removed, and the test asks
children to fill in the blanks, sometimes with a reference
list, and sometimes not.
Also important is teaching children how to successfully
complete the test. In other words, not spending too long
on a question that they are completely flummoxed by, but
rather moving on, and coming back to it later if there is
time at the end of that section of the test. It’s useful to
practice working under time pressure as well; the more
comfortable children are with this, the more relaxed they
can be during the test.
about life in the 1st century AD with gladiatorial displays taking place
Changing times
In recent years there has been much debate over the
best way to teach maths to children. In primary school,
when a child is first developing an understanding
of mathematics, a structured emphasis on learning
the foundational skills is key. Without a thorough
understanding of basic principles such as times tables,
a child will be unable to grasp the more complex
mathematical problems they will face as they continue
their education.
Dr Stephen Curran, founder of AE Tuition and AE
Publications says “The new maths curriculum, which
was introduced in 2014, went some way to addressing
this with a more structured approach to teaching.
However, there is still work to be done if we want to
improve our children’s ability to meet the mathematical
challenges they will face in secondary school and
beyond.”
The government has announced that all 11-year-olds
will be tested on their times tables, as part of the
Department for Education’s ‘war on innumeracy and
illiteracy’. In order to pass the test children will need to
know their times tables up to the 12 times table by the
age of eleven years old.
The test will see the first use of on-screen technology
in nationwide testing as children will complete it on a
computer. There is something quite heartening in seeing
the most modern of methods used to assess a skill that is
once again being given the credence it deserves.
Step lays foundations for future learning
Some of you may remember sitting in a classroom and as the teacher
talked found yourself losing concentration. You scanned the room only
to see your classmates seemingly engrossed in the lesson. Panic set in.
You tried to re-engage with what was being said just as an instruction
was given. You whispered to your friend, “What do I need to do?” and
promptly got told off.
This experience is indicative of someone with processing and working
memory issues. Over time, this can become isolating and stressful, not
to mention affect academic results, confidence and self-esteem. It can
also lead to behavioural problems.
This is where STEP comes in. STEP aims to help children who are
struggling to concentrate or can’t stop fidgeting, to unlock their
academic potential through personalised physical exercises that focus
on balance, eye tracking and coordination. Delivered in an integrated
way, the exercises are designed to enhance the performance of the
cerebellum, the area of the brain responsible for automating tasks, thus
laying the foundation for future learning.
STEP is passionate about helping children who are underachieving and
is actively engaged in discussions with the education sectors in the UK
and US about the role STEP could play in supporting these individuals.
Additionally, STEP has just concluded a 12 month UK Pilot Study to
empirically evidence the impacts it can have. These results can be found
