Camp Ramah in California creates religious educating
communities in which campers and staff have fun learning
skills for a life committed to the ideals of the Conservative
movement — God, Torah, the Jewish people and tikkun olam.
Such communities support and strengthen Jewish identity and
experiences fostered in the home, synagogue and school.
Affiliated with the National Ramah Commission and under
the educational auspices of American Jewish University,
Camp Ramah in California works in partnership with institutions
of the Conservative movement in the Western United States.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Dear Camp Ramah Family,
I know that you are probably tired of reading this from me over and over again, but I have to repeat
how truly honored I feel to be the Chair of Camp Ramah. I have never encountered a more committed
and devoted community of volunteers in the 20 years I have dedicated to Jewish communal service.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
That being said, those of you who haven’t found your place either in volunteer activities or in a financial
commitment – now is your time. We have spent many hours envisioning the next 50 years of Camp
Ramah and have such great dreams for programming, facilities, scholarships and endowments. Many
have already stepped forward and committed their support. Please help us fulfill our vision and help
us to identify others who might join us.
We had a magnificent 50th celebration – if you were not able to join us, please enjoy the pictures
from the website (www.ramah.org). You are bound to find a long-lost camp friend, counselor or fellow
parent in the beautiful photographs. It was a very memorable day brimming with ruach and the energy
of our devoted volunteers!! We are headed towards another wonderful celebration on December 6,
2007. We will have the pleasure of honoring two extraordinarily committed Ramah parents, Sheila
and Aaron Leibovic, who have continuously given to Camp Ramah with their time and resources.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Chaverim,
As Camp Ramah in California opens for its 51st summer, I feel blessed to be able to thank the many thousands
of people who believe in what we do. Many debates and arguments consume the Jewish community about
what “works”– which programs, experiences and schools give our children a lasting commitment to
God, Torah and the Jewish people. But nobody disputes one thing: Jewish camping works!
2006 was an unprecedented year for Jewish Camping. Federations, foundations and major philanthropists
all over the U.S. are starting to support initiatives to bring more Jewish children to Jewish summer
camps, thanks to the work of the Foundation for Jewish Camping (FJC). In our community, the Lowy family,
has generously funded $1,000 incentives for new four-week Ramah campers, lowering tuition significantly
for children who might otherwise not be able to afford a full summer session. While in previous years
evidence for camping’s success was mostly anecdotal, studies have demonstrated that Jewish camping
is the single most powerful solidifier of Jewish identity that the Jewish community has at its disposal.
Moreover, a study by Drs. Ariela Keysar and Barry Kosmin concluded that “Ramah-trained counselors
are undoubtedly the elite of the elite”!
In the months and years to come, Camp Ramah in California will face important questions about how
to grow so we can continue to provide the best Jewish camping experience in the U.S. Western region.
As we prepare to take down the fence and open the Farber Ramah Campgrounds and Levine Learning
Center purchased in 1999, we will have wonderful opportunities to expand and enhance our program
through exciting capital projects such as a state-of-the-art high and low ropes course, an equestrian facility,
and a multi-purpose building to include a much-needed indoor/outdoor gymnasium, a media arts center,
and a 400-person chapel with views overlooking the mountains of the Ojai valley, just to name a few.
We have achieved much, and much work awaits us ahead. The rabbis counsel: “It is not yours alone to
complete the work, and neither are you free to desist from it.” Thank you all for your untiring partnership,
vision, and support.

Celebrating 50 Years of Camp Ramah
“Just over a ridge off Foothill road in Ojai a vision and a dream are coming true, as new
Camp Ramah rises within the contours of the land.” When the Ojai Valley News went
to print on Sunday, July 30, 1972, Camp Ramah in California’s Max and Pauline Zimmer
conference had just been completed. Thirty four years later and 50 years after Ramah’s
first ten-day encampment in 1955, the Ramah vision and dream have become a reality
for thousands of Jewish children. Through the years, campers inspired by Ramah have
gone on to passionately embrace Judaism, tikkun olam, and community leadership,
and in turn inspire countless others.
On December 3rd, Camp Ramah in California culminated its 50th anniversary year by
hosting a one-day festival at camp filled with meaningful activities, tributes, reunions,
memories and plans for the future. The enthusiasm of the over 800 people in attendance
– campers, directors and families spanning 50 years – was palpable. On this very special
occasion, it was our pleasure to honor Ramah’s distinguished directors from camp’s
inception to the present. Their energy, creativity, dedication and love of Torah have
made the Ramah experience a treasured rite of passage for generations of Jewish children
throughout North America and beyond.

LETTER FROM THE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE CHAIR
Dear Friends,
It is my great pleasure to write to you today as Development Committee Chair of Camp Ramah in
California. Ramah has been a home away from home for my children for many years. My husband
Aaron and I are passionate about the camp and believe in its mission. We want to do all that we can
to keep the Ramah experience alive not only for our children, but also for our grandchildren and others.
Ever since my family was introduced to Ramah during a Sinai Temple family weekend at camp, summers
up in Ojai have been a regular and much anticipated part of our daughters’ lives. The positive Jewish
atmosphere and spirit (ruach) so present during that weekend was energizing and left a lasting
impression. When it came time to send our daughter Tova to camp it was quite evident to us that
Ramah was the place. Our daughters have loved not only the facilities and counselors, but also the
many programs Ramah has to offer. Although we send our children to day school, we wanted them
to have an uninterrupted Jewish experience for 4 or 8 straight weeks every summer. There was no
question that Camp Ramah was perfect for our family.
Camp Ramah has given our family much more than we have given in return. That’s why when I was
asked to join the Board I did so with no hesitation. It was the same when I joined the Executive
Committee and became Development Chair. It has been a wonderful and unique experience. My husband
Aaron and I believe in working hard and giving back to the organizations that educate and nourish
Jewish children in our community. Ramah is at the forefront of Jewish camping and an indispensable
aspect of Jewish life in California.
We want to make sure that the camp is financially healthy long into the future and that we build world-class
facilities and create the best programs so that future generations will want to go there. It is imperative
that we continuously improve our facilities while maintaining the basic values of Ramah, so that it
keeps families and children interested in keeping the flame and spirit of Ramah alive and flourishing.

LETTER FROM THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
Dear Camp Ramah in California Community:
As we wrap up our celebration of 50 years as a strong and vibrant Jewish community, I am incredibly
awestruck at the ruach displayed by so many members of our family. Camp Ramah stands on solid
ground as so many supporters – campers, staff members, parents, lay leaders, donors – work to build
our community into a dynamic center for Jewish life, and this past year stands out as one of great
happenings for our many generations.
Throughout the year we have been overjoyed with the number of Ramah’niks who have reconnected with
our community through our 50th celebration, year round encampments and lively young alumni activity.
During the non-summer season Ojai came to life with visits by synagogues and other groups to our
conference center, Ramah encampments such as Rikkudiah, Ruach Nashim (our new women’s spirituality
Shabbaton) and a Tikvah Family Weekend. Our young alumni have reconnected with Ramah through
events in Los Angeles, New York and Ojai, and by joining Chevrei Ramah – our official young alumni
association. This activity reached a crescendo with our 50th celebration where over 800 attendees joined
us in honoring the camp and our past directors.
During this past summer our program was marked by a great balance of tradition and change that preserves
the parts of our program campers have grown to love, yet keeps us on par with innovation in the camping
industry. Campers in 2006 continued to enjoy great sports, swimming, Israel and Judaic programs, electives
and lively singing. We also infused our program with new outdoor adventure activities such as kayaking,
mountain biking and rock climbing, additional Hebrew musical productions and a brand new CD recording
project featuring Jewish and Israeli music produced by our very own campers and staff.
I feel blessed by our good fortune, and find it exciting to join with other lay and professional leaders as
we dream of the exciting ways that Camp Ramah in California will grow over the next 50 years.

FAMILIES WORK TOGETHER
TO RENOVATE RAMAH KITCHEN
The new kitchen will
mean better and more
food options for campers
and less hassle for staff
for many years to come.
When Mike Waterman was on staff in 1972,
Camp Ramah had just dedicated its Max and
Pauline Zimmer Conference Center on Fairview
Road. The kitchen, named for Jack and Rachel
Gindi, had just been built, and was serving up
healthy meals to hundreds of Ramah’niks daily.
“Ramah campers and staff are the future of
conservative Judaism,” Waterman says. “It’s hard
to educate someone on an empty stomach,
especially when they’re living at camp.”
“Camp Ramah has always been close to our hearts,”
says long-time Ramah supporter Rachel Gindi.
That’s why when it became clear three years ago
that the kitchen needed to be updated and
improved to repair damaged floors and aging
equipment, she and her husband Jack quickly
offered their support. So did Janet and Jake Farber,
Judy and Lou Miller, and Mike Waterman, through
the Marty Witkin estate. With the generous support
of these families, and the expertise of Ramah
operations director Elie Mechaly, the kitchen has
been renovated to more efficiently serve the needs
of a growing camp population.
The renovation, which took two months to
complete and cost $425,000, includes a separate
dairy kitchen, new waterproof non-skid flooring to
replace cracked and leaky tiles, new lighting and
sprinkler systems, all-new cooking equipment,
including an 80-gallon soup kettle, new stoves
and two revolving ovens, a new walk-in freezer and
a large cooler, as well as stainless steel countertops
and walls.
The impact of all these changes? “It’s quite a
difference,” says Janet Farber. The renovation,
she says, “will save the kitchen staff a lot of time
in preparation and will give them time to be more
creative.”
“The new equipment cooks a lot better than what
we had before,” Mechaly relates. “We used to
have six pots on the stove to make enough soup
for 850 people.” With the new 80-gallon kettle,
soup preparation has become simpler and more
efficient. In addition, the revolving ovens have
affected the quality of the food. “The food cooks
evenly and doesn’t burn,” Mechaly says.
The new kitchen will mean better and more
food options for campers and less hassle for staff
for many years to come. “It is a perfectly well
constructed job,” says Lou Miller. “The kitchen
serves over 800 people during the summer months.
With this renovation, we have preserved the
ability to do that for another 30 years.”

CAMP RAMAH IN CALIFORNIA
ENDOWMENT FUNDS
Endowments have been established to provide support for scholarships and for the development of new programs without the
necessity of increasing camp fees. Camp Ramah in California would like to thank all who have donated to the Ramah Scholarship
Endowment Fund and to our Program Endowments, and those families who have established the following endowments. The
current minimum gift to establish an endowment fund is $30,000. A Scholarship Endowment established at this level will fund
half of a session for a camper who might otherwise not be able to enjoy the magic of a Camp Ramah summer. Many new Program
Endowments will be created through gifts to the capital campaign, “Enhancing the Journey.” To establish a new endowment fund,

camp tuition.
Janine and Peter Lowy know firsthand the
impact a summer at Ramah can have on children.
“We think it’s a fantastic experience,” says Janine,
whose four children have attended Camp Ramah
in California since they were little. “We believe in
the mission of Ramah,” Janine relates. So much
so that they have decided a summer there is an
opportunity more children should have.
The Lowys have generously funded an incentives
program aimed at getting as many children to
camp as possible. The Lowy Four Week Campership
Incentive Program offers families of new Ramah
campers an opportunity to obtain a discount of
$1,000 on camp tuition. The program makes the
Ramah experience more accessible to children
who otherwise would not come to camp. And
with so many summer programs competing for
childrens’ time and interest, the Lowy Campership
Incentive Program will encourage that many more
to choose Ramah.
Why is a summer at Ramah so important? “It gives
kids an all around Jewish experience in an everyday
setting,” Janine remarks. “It empowers them as
they go off to college and anchors them to Judaism
and Zionism. The kids live it – they learn about
Israel and speak the language. They form lifelong
connections apart from their parents.”
The Lowys hope that their emphasis on supporting
Jewish programming throughout Los Angeles and
beyond will inspire a new generation of Jewish
leaders. They have given of their time and resources
extraordinarily to that end. Janine has been an
active Ramah Board Member for the last six years.
Peter is Chairman of the American Jewish University.
They are strong supporters of their synagogues.
Wherever the Lowys go they bring with them their
vision, leadership and genuine passion for their
faith and their people.
“We see this as a way of strengthening the Jewish
community by encouraging more kids to come to
camp,” says Janine. “We hope new campers will
be inspired and come away from their experience
with a love for Judaism and a new commitment to
their communities and to Israel.”
The Lowy Incentive program has already significantly
increased enrollment in its first year. Even
more importantly, says Rabbi Daniel Greyber, “it
has sent an important signal to our community
that our doors are open wide and that no family
should turn away from Ramah because finances
might stand in the way.”

For the past 50 years, Camp Ramah in California has brought people together form
across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Israel to expand their creativity, learn
from dynamic teachers and specialists, explore being Jewish in today’s world and
experience the beauty of nature. Ramah campers develop leadership skills, lasting
friendships and a strong Jewish consciousness. Ramah is more than a camp; it is
an extended family where friendships forged and experiences gained last a lifetime.
As the milestone of Camp Ramah’s anniversary approached, lay and professional
leadership recognized the opportunity to plan strategically to ensure the successful
future of the camp’s physical facilities and programming for the next 50 years and

The new Swimming Pool
will permit camp to offer
more extensive aquatics
programs, such as water
polo, advanced swim
training, and scuba diving
in the diving well of the
existing pool.
Swimming Pool and Water Slides
A second, shallow swimming pool with two
waterslides will enhance the opportunities for
water play and activities available to campers.
The new pool will be added adjacent to the
Aquatics Center, and will serve as a recreational
pool for campers to engage in games such as
water basketball and volleyball, as well as the
landing area for the long-anticipated water slides.
The new Swimming Pool will also permit camp to
offer more extensive aquatics programs, such as
water polo, advanced swim training, and scuba
diving in the diving well of the existing pool. The
new construction, anticipated to be completed for
the opening of camp in June 2008, will facilitate
expansion of fun evening activities such as leil
eilat and night swims.
The proceeds of the December 2007 dinner
honoring Aaron and Sheila Leibovic will be directed
towards construction of the Swimming Pool. The
Leibovic family has generously committed to
sponsor one water slide. Donors of $10,000 and
up will be recognized on a plaque in the pool
area, along with the Leibovic family.
Entry Area
The new Entry Area will transform the existing
staff parking area – it will be graded, paved and
landscaped to provide a formal arrival and parking
area near the entrance to camp. The road will be
extended onto the
orange grove parcel
to provide one point
of access into Camp
Ramah. The current
security booth will
be relocated to the
west side of the main
road, at the entrance
to the new parking
lot. The addition of a
fence and rows of evergreen trees will provide an
attractive and inviting screen for the lot to all who
enter camp.
Naming Opportunities are available for only
ten permanent parking spaces for Yom Kehillah
Community Day each summer, in perpetuity, at
$25,000 each. Your children, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren will benefit from your naming
opportunity gift for the next 50 years!
These exciting developments will only become a reality through the vision and generosity of
