Brio now fresher than ever
HONDA'S popular Brio compact
Hatchback and Sedan
have undergone a series of
updates, designed to add further
value, convenience and
aesthetic appeal to an already
appealing package.
Since making their South African
debut some three years
ago, the Brio models have
become a popular choice
among new car buyers seeking
a compact and affordable
motoring solution
offering quality,
convenience,
economy and value.
The latest Brio
models now
boast redesigned
front ends, comprising
a bolder
grille,
revised
bumper assembly and new
headlights. The changes at
the rear are more subtle, with
revisions to the tail light clusters.
The interior of both the Sedan
and Hatchback models has
also been refreshed. An allnew
dashboard, with a sleeker
profile, smoothly integrated
air vents and redesigned
ventilation controls. The new
dashboard not only adds a
more contemporary appearance,
all er-
but also benefits over-
gonomics.
A key update to the standard
specification of the Brio Sedan
and Hatch Comfort models
is the addition of
Bluetooth connectivity, which
allows seamless and safe
hands-free telephony using
Bluetooth-compatible cellphones,
as well as Bluetoothbased
audio streaming.
An earlier update added a
rear window demister to both
the Brio Sedan and Hatch
Trend models, while the Brio
Hatch Comfort also gained a
rear wiper and a smart tailgate
spoiler.
All Brio models continue to
be powered by
Honda’s
frisky
and
frugal
1,2-litre four-cylinder engine.
Rated at 65 kW of
maximum power and 109 Nm
of torque, the fuel-injected
unit drives the front wheels
via a five-speed manual
gearbox. A five-speed automatic
transmission is an option
on Comfort models.
Also standard across the
board is a full range of active
and passive safety features,
including ABS anti-lock
brakes with electronic brake
force distribution (EBD), dual
front airbags, and front seat
belts with pre-tensioners and
load limiters. Central locking
and an engine immobiliser
are included, too.
The updated Honda Brio
models go on sale in May
through Honda’s national
network of authorised
dealers.

Max Verstappen makes F1 history
"For me, it was a case of not
making mistakes and it
worked.
"I knew the Ferraris were a bit
faster, I let them catch up, so
it was just about keeping the
gap.
"That worked well until eight
laps from the end, we were
catching traffic and it was
about managing the last sector,
get a good exit out of the
last chicane.
"I knew it was going to be very

debut for Red Bull Racing in
Formula 1 in the Spanish
Grand Prix last weekend.
The Dutch teenager capitalised
on a two-stop strategy to
lead the race, holding off Ferrari's
Kimi Raikkonen over
the final stint while three-stoppers
Sebastian Vettel and
Daniel Ricciardo battled just
a few seconds further back.
"It's amazing, I couldn't believe
I was leading," said 18-
year-old Verstappen, who is
now F1's youngest race winner.
"It's a very big surprise, I didn't
expect that. Unbelievable, I
can't believe it.
"I was targeting a podium but
to win straight away is an
amazing feeling.
"In the last laps I got a bit of
cramp - I was getting very
excited, I couldn't believe it.
"I was looking at the pitboard,
saw my name with 10 laps to
go, then started to watch the
board.
"I was thinking 'don't look at it,
focus on the tyres and bring
it home'.
"It's a great feeling. I absolutely
didn't expect this."
Key to Verstappen's victory
was fending off severe pressure
from Raikkonen over
the closing stages, especially
once the 2007 world champion
got within DRS range of
the Red Bull.
"This race felt like an endurance
race, especially the last
10 laps," added Verstappen.
"As soon as we pitted I knew
we were going to the end, so
the first few laps [of the last
stint] I didn't really push.
"The last stint I got a lot of
pressure from Kimi behind
but on this track it's difficult to
overtake.

New Lexus headed to our shores
LEXUS has unveiled its new
IS sports sedan at the Beijing
Motor Show, delivering daring
new styling and updated
safety, luxury and convenience
features.
A dynamic new front fascia
headlines the exterior
styling changes with
new headlamps,
large air intakes in the
front bumper and an
evolution of Lexus' signature
spindle grille
design.
The grille now folds back
at a higher point, changing
the proportions at the top and
bottom sections to provide a
sportier, more aggressive appearance
while blending effortlessly
into the reshaped
bonnet.
The F Sport model spindle
grille features an exclusive
three-dimensional F-mesh
pattern with jet-black metallic
coating that incorporates
functional brake ducts.
The new IS also features an
enhanced character line on
the side of the vehicle that
adds to its dynamic profile
while emphasising forward
motion.
A
range
of new alloy
wheels compliment
the refreshed design and
utilise revised spoke arrangements
and machined surfaces
to create a powerful visual
statement.
The updated rear design includes
more pronounced L-
shaped LED light guides with
a triple layering feature in the
taillight housing. New rectangular
chrome exhaust tips also
accentuate the IS sedan's
sporting nature and tie in with
the angular design ethos employed.
A new multimedia screen,
which has increased
in size from seven
to 10.3
inches,
represents the key update to
the IS cabin. The new high
resolution display offers a
larger and clearer image of
the various functions of Lexus'
advanced multimedia system.
"Enter" buttons have been
added to the sides of the
Remote Touch Interface
(RTI) on the centre console
to boost user functionality
(as employed on the new RX
launched earlier in the year).
The audio and ventilation
control panel has also been
refined to fit completely within
the enlarged knee bolsters
with a new hairline-finish surface
that provides visual appeal
while also giving a high
quality feel.
New stitching on the meter
hood and refined
speedometer and tachometer
deliver an additional
sporty feel,
while new cup holder
designs that are reshaped
to also house
larger smart phones, a
larger leather-wrapped
palm rest and new markings
for the premium in-dash analogue
clock provide additional
convenience and luxury
touches.
The existing line-up of powerful
and efficient engine offerings
will continue on the new
IS sedan, starting with the

turbocharged four cylinder
unit of the IS 200t, alongside
the charismatic 3.5-litre quad
cam V6 of the IS 350.
The new IS sedan is scheduled
to arrive in South Africa
in the last quarter of the year,
with local specification and
pricing to be announced at a
later date.

Teaching adults how to install
and operate a child seat is
one thing, getting the child to
stay in the seat is entirely another–
especially when the
child gets older.
“Our focus is on ensuring that
young children travel in the
safest manner possible, depending
on their size and age.
This means rearward-facing
up to the age of at least 3 or 4
years and after that with child
seats or booster cushions up
to 140 cm in height. The safety
benefits are unquestionable,
yet many parents unwittingly
allow their children to sit forward-facing
too early. One of
the many reasons quoted for
this is comfort – the child complains
that there is not enough
legroom, or is too warm due to
the upholstery,” continues Jakobsson.
Volvo Cars’ new-generation
child seats are made with a
more breathable and comfortable
upholstery comprised of
80% wool textile which makes
the seats smoother to the
touch, highly durable, and better-performing
in both hot and
cold climates. The seats also
have a slimmer design aimed
at increasing legroom and
overall comfort.
“We believe that children will
be more comfortable in our
new rearward-facing seat and
that this will encourage parents
to keep their children
rearward-facing for longer.
This will have a direct impact
on overall child safety and
supports Vision 2020, where
no one will be killed or seriously
injured in a Volvo car by the
year 2020,” she adds.
The new seats are designed
to suit the needs of children of
different ages and sizes:
• Infant seat - rearward-facing
(up to 13 kg or 1 year)
• Child seat - rearward-facing
for children from 9 months up
to 6 years (least 3-4 years as
recommended by Volvo)
• Booster seat - forward-facing
for children that have outgrown
the rearward-facing
seat (from 3-10 years old)
Volvo Cars continues to focus
on the importance of children
travelling in rearward-facing
seats as long as possible.
The new seats, developed
with one of the world’s leading
child seat makers, Britax-
Römer, and tested at Volvo
Cars Safety Centre in Gothenburg,
Sweden, will be available
in South Africa from July.
