Overnight Stay
Elegant lounge area where you can watch the world go by
Having rich architecture, vast
history, estuarine walks, lots of
interesting shops, eateries and a
fascinating museum, Topsham’s
certainly a destination worth visiting.
I suppose you’d say Topsham’s a
small, friendly and quaint English
town with unique Dutch architecture.
Of course, Exeter’s just up the
road, so whether you’re exploring,
how elegantly this fine old building
had been finished. It’s great to see
historic old buildings rejuvenated
and back to their former glory. An
excellent and sensitive innovation
was the glass atrium build over
the central entrance passageway,
providing a cheerful, fun space
for dining. The room we stayed
in was on the top floor and was a
of the dining experience. It’s the
crowning glory of the day and a
great meal always stays in your
memory as part of a great experience.
It helps tremendously when one of
the proprietors is a chef, because
you know there’s no better control
of whatever leaves the kitchen. I can
only say that our dining experience
was exceptional in all areas. Service
Somerset rainbow trout with fennel
lemon, caper & raisin dressing
Chef’s appetiser, slow braised pigs
cheek, romanische, crispy shallot
Raviolo, wild garlic purée,
mushroom velouté, salsify
Artichoke soup, poached quails eggs
one of the many stars of the evening
The sommelier’s recommendation
on business or even attending a
graduation, Topsham’s a great option.
Our Overnight Stay for this issue
was The Salutation Inn, a fine old
coaching house dating back to the
1720s. Run by chef Tom Williams-
Hawkes and Amelia Boalch, The
Salutation was lovingly restored
by the couple over a 2 year period,
and upon arrival, we were struck by
bit excessive for our needs, being a
suite comprising bedroom, lounge,
bathroom, toilet and landing. All
tastefully decorated and comfortable,
with interesting views down onto
the old High Street (incidentally, you
can park your car round the back
in the courtyard). Of course, what
you look forward to when staying
away from home is the anticipation
was first rate, all courses were
excellent, it was a most memorable
evening’s dining. The sommelier
service was outstanding. I can
highly recommend The Salutation
Inn to you, both if you’re visiting
the area (it makes a most excellent
base) or if you just wish to enjoy a
first rate fine dining experience or
have a special occasion coming up.
