LEAGUE HISTORY

District 1

From 1948 to 1993, Western athletic teams

competed in District 1 of the NAIA, which

encompassed Washington, Alaska, northern

Idaho, and British Columbia. The original

members were Central Washington, Eastern

Washington, Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound,

Gonzaga, Saint Martin’s, Seattle, Seattle

Pacific, Western, Whitman and Whitworth.

Making up the district in its last year were

Central, Lewis-Clark State, Pacific Lutheran,

Saint Martin’s, Seattle, Simon Fraser, Evergreen,

Puget Sound, Western, Whitman

and Whitworth.

Pacific Northwest Region 1

During the shift from a district-based structure

to one featuring conferences and regions,

NAIA schools in the Pacific Northwest

competed in a regional format in 1993-94.

Schools competing under this format included

Central Washington, Lewis-Clark

State, Puget Sound, Saint Martin’s, Seattle,

Simon Fraser, and Western.

Region Champion:

Pacific Northwest Athletic

Conference

Eight northwest colleges formed the Pacific

Northwest Athletic Conference (PNWAC) in

1994. The conference initially consisted of

Central Washington, Evergreen, Lewis-Clark

State, Puget Sound, Saint Martin’s, Seattle,

Simon Fraser and Western.

Pacific West Conference

In 1998, the PNWAC merged with the Pacific

West Conference.

2001 WESTERN WASHINGTON

Great Northwest

Athletic Conference

In 2001, 10 schools left the PacWest to form

the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Humboldt State left in 2006 and Montana

State Billings will join in 2007.
