YOGIS
HELP OTHERS FIND
THEIR CORE OF HEALTH
BY COURTNEY CLARK
jack
Practicing yoga for almost two decades, Shri Hamilton-Hubbard
describes the heartbeat of Jacksonville as home to “hippies with
businesses and mortgages.”
“I am all about the Urban Core,” says Hamilton-Hubbard, a yoga
instructor at the Shala in San Marco. “I love Riverside, I love San Marco,
I love Springfield. They’re not making [neighborhoods like] them
anymore.”
Hamilton-Hubbard identifies with hippies, describing them as socially
conscious and aware, pro-earth, and pro-peace.
She certainly looks the part.
With dreads as part of her personal expression — and in part to lock
in her Kundalini energy (or creative life force) — she also has the Indian
“om” symbol inked on her forearm. This yogi believes her practice helps
detox her life and focus spiritually.
“If you can quiet your mind, you can remember who you are,”
Hamilton-Hubbard says of yoga. The discipline is progressive, continually
breaking down barriers within the practitioner to become more aware
internally and externally.
Yoga provides a path to what she terms “active relaxation.” Before
beginning the practice, she said she never had been able to find a way to be
peaceful and dynamic simultaneously.
She says meditation at the end of the yogi’s practice is pivotal. This is
when people can refuel their Prana, or energy with intelligence. Hamilton-
Hubbard describes this as “the glue that holds the universe and the body
together.”
As for her relationship with Jacksonville, the yogi describes the
community as comforting and familiar, especially within the Shala.
Hamilton-Hubbard is proud of the loving and supportive environment she
has quietly helped nurture.
“I don’t care
SHANTYTOWN PUB THROUGH
THE EYES OF A REGULAR
BY MATT PITTMAN
jack
Why have me describe Shantytown when I’ve never been there? Instead, let’s hear from someone who seems
to know the place like the back of her hand.
SHOE BOAT
It’s a thing at Shantytown Pub
Ingredients ...
Nasty-ass beer
Nasty-ass shoe
How to make it ...
Pour beer into shoe. Drink up.
Meet Jenna Richey, local
artist, coffee slinger at Vagabond,
distributor of frosty beverages at
Spliffs and a regular at Shantytown
Pub in Springfield.
Matt: How would you describe
Shantytown?
Jenna: The best hole-in-the-wall
you’ve ever been to. The first time
I ever came to Shantytown it was
filled with smoke, there’s country
music playing and there were kids
in the corner doing “Shoe boats”.
M: Shoe boats?
J: You drink a nasty-ass beer
out of someone’s nasty-ass shoe
(laughter). The bar is a block
from my house so I decided this
would be my Happy Hour spot.
I continued to come, and I fell in
love with the place.
M: What makes Shantytown
special?
J: When you come here you’re
going to see all types of people.
The uppity Springfield people,
punk kids, homeless people, you
see all walks of life. That’s why
Jenna Richey
I love Shantytown, everyone
likes it. I don’t care what you’re
into, you’re going to come to
Shantytown at some point and
enjoy the hell out of it.
M: Shantytown has a lot
of character. Describe the
atmosphere.
J: You’re walking into a smokefilled
bar. Someone’s going to
greet you, holler at you. Yell at
you. You’ll see crazy shit on the
walls. All these huge animal prints.
You might see a fight. You might
see someone dancing on the bar.
You might see Twinkie, who is a
local drag rapper. Out back there’s
graffiti covering the walls. If
it’s winter, you’ll see a fire. You
may see Ian (Ranne, owner of
Shantytown) back here cooking
oysters. You hear the noises of the
city. It’s the best.
M: What’s your favorite part of the
bar?
J: It’s a combination of everything.
Great prices, but most importantly
the people. Even if you don’t know
the people at the bar, you’ll know
them before you walk out. It feels
like a family, Shantytown is my
family. Also, I think if you say
Shantytown, people are going to
remember “Shoe boats”, because
it’s a thing here. And, Matt About
Jax, I think you should do it
sometime.
DANCING
DOWNTOWN
WITH
JACKSONVILLE’S STARS
BY COURTNEY CLARK
jack
jacksonville gets a little snazzier
with its annual Dancing with the
Stars event on Saturday, June 4.
A Social Affair Dance
Studio (ASA) and Downtown’s
Jacksonville Children’s Chorus
(JCC) partner every 18 months
to put on the show at Jacoby
Symphony Hall in the Times-Union
Center for the Performing Arts.
Local stars are paired with
professional partners — dance
teachers at ASA — and compete to
raise money.
Funds are donated to the JCC
for its programs and scholarships.
If it were not for the children
in the JCC, Jake Gordon probably
wouldn’t step foot on the dance
floor. But when he was invited to
participate in Dancing with the
Stars, he knew he had to help raise
money for the JCC — especially
since it’s located in Downtown, the
heart of Jacksonville Gordon loves
and strives to improve.
“I used to be able to dance.
Then I had kids. Now I dance like
your father,” Gordon said.
Although Gordon has only
been CEO of Downtown Vision,
Inc. (DVI) since 2015, he has
been “bullish” on Jacksonville
for several years. He brings his
16 jack | JUNE 1-14, 2016
background in urban
development and real
estate to DVI, a non-profit
that works with the City of
Jacksonville to build and maintain
the city’s core. The number one
way to do this, he says, is to
increase the number of businesses
and residents that are located in the
heart of Jacksonville.
Art Walk and Hemming Park
events show the potential for
Jacksonville to become a 24-
hour city, a change that will give
Downtown more vitality. Gordon
says businesses are relocating to
Downtown, so now the goal is to
make the area a great environment
for people to live. Local
organizations — such as MOCA,
the Chamber, and the Florida
Theatre — help out and want to
see this happen, as well.
“It’s way out of my comfort
zone,” Gordon says of dancing,
“but I’m definitely a sucker to help
children for charity.”
A vote for Jake is a vote for Downtown
Dancin’ into your hearts
Jake Gordon
CEO, Downtown Vision, Inc.
Vote for me because: “My dance will be a visual
celebration of Downtown Jacksonville, the heart of
our city we love.”
Gordon with dance partner Ruhiyyih McKinley
CFP, CDFATM, Partner and Co-Founder of Ullmann
Financial Group, Inc.
Journal as one of its Money Master honorees in
2015 and is a member of the AIG Advisor Group
Women’s Advisory Board.
Vote for me because: “So the children known
Making dancing great again
Let’s do this
Nancy Chartrand
Board chairman for the Chartrand Foundation
Named “Woman of Influence” and “Philanthropists of the Year”
with her husband in 2013, Chartrand spends much of her time
volunteering. The Chartrand Foundation raises money to destigmatize
mental illness and provide therapy in schools.
stage.”
Chartrand with dance partner Larry Audije
Keith Copeland
Software consultant
After working at the Department of Defense for five years,
Copeland was ready to take his logistics and system tracking
technology to a new business. Now with the Jade Software
Corporation, Copeland spends his free time volunteering with
Renaissance Jack and the Robotics teams in Jacksonville. Along
with family and friends, he has helped bring Coding as a second
language to Duval schools.
Vote for me because: “I love long walks on the beach, baby puppies and giving back.”
Copeland with dance partner Samantha Wilson
There’s no such thing as too much energy
Melanie Cost
CSX, Director of Financial & Media Relations
In addition to overseeing the media response team and crisis
communications for CSX, Cost co-chairs the Women’s Giving
Alliance Communications Committee, helped develop the APCO
Worldwide pro bono grants program, and was involved with choral
singing throughout her childhood.
Vote for me because: “All of the money raised helps more kids
access JCC’s choral education, and being a chorus kid helped me develop the confidence that
has now led me to dance in front of 2,000 people!”
Cost with dance partner Samuel Penalba
Believe you’ve got this ... just dance
Jill Evans
Happy stay-at home mom (for now)
Previously director of business development at IPC Healthcare,
Evans enjoys volunteering for civic and philanthropic organizations.
She has worked with the Dunedin Rotary Club, American Heart
Association and American Cancer Society.
Vote for me because: “I have worked hard to raise money for
the JCC trying to help children reach their goals and dreams […]
and my hips don’t lie.”
Evans with dance partner James Bell
Dancing for a better tomorrow,
twerking to help create change
Dane Grey
Founder and president, Elite Parking Services of America, Inc.
Grey sits on many boards in Jacksonville. He has been named
one of the Top 40 under 40 by the Jacksonville business Journal,
given the Governor’s Young Entrepreneur Award, and is actively
involved with the Young Presidents Organization.
Vote for me because: “I love kids. They’re our future and I want
to make a difference in my community.”
Grey with dance partner Ashley Novak
Steal the show
Annie Tinker
Prenatal and postpartum fitness trainer and doula
Tinker came to Jacksonville in 2013 with husband and Jaguars
long snapper Carson. Since then, the Tinkers have started the Be
a Blessing Foundation and are involved with the TAILS Program
via Pit Sisters, the American Civility Association, and the Jaguars
Foundation.
Vote for me because: “We’ve definitely worked the hardest and I
know we’ll have the best dance.”
Tinker with dance partner Chris Hill
EMPHASIS ON FAMILY
AT BISCOTTIS
BY ANTHONY NEWKIRK JR.
jack
Sometimes going out to eat at
your favorite restaurant has
more to do about nostalgia then
food.
No matter what you’ve gone
through life. No matter how many
restaurants open or close. There
is that one restaurant — that one
place — the one that draws you
back.
For me is that place is Biscottis
in Avondale. It’s so full of good
food, good service and good
memories.
For me, it’s been 10 short years
of living in Jacksonville, and six of
those years have been spent dining
at Biscottis.
The brunch service drew me
to Biscottis. I am a lover of all
things brunch and this place just
makes my taste buds all happy. So
it’s good to know that throughout
the years they have keep some
of my favorite menu items like
the Biscottis Omelet, filled with
pancetta, smoked ham, onion and
cheddar jack cheese. If you have
a little bit of a sweet tooth, then
you’ll have to start the day with the
Creme Brulee French Toast, topped
with Orange-Honey Mascarpone
Cream.
Biscottis’ brunch was the first
time Amanda and I took our oldest
son, Connor, for his first outing
as a newborn. We were hungry
and nervous, but the environment
and the great service, eased our
jitters. Family is what Biscottis is
all about. When it comes to local
restaurants, this is the place where
I take the family. It’s a place where
you should take yours, too.
Whether it’s Mothers Day,
Easter or any other special family
occasion — Biscottis is the place to
celebrate. Menu options are filled
with a lot of tasty signature salads,
pizzas & sandwiches for lunch,
and its dinner specials change
weekly and seasonally. It also has a
delectable kids menu.
Even though brunch brought me
to Biscottis, its the desserts that are
one of the main reasons I go now.
They’re just so damn delicious.
When you walk into the
restaurant, you can’t help but
notice all those beautiful cakes and
desserts staring you in the face. It
makes you want to skip your meal
and head straight to dessert.
But what to chose?
I usually go with the German
Chocolate Cake. I believe it’s the
best of its kind in Jacksonville.
But if that’s not your thing, the
bread pudding is pretty amazing,
too. They usually keep a multitude
of cakes and other desserts on
rotation.
Seriously, it’s just something
that has to be experienced.
“The community is growing because
within Riverside.”
«
Bethany
Crawley
Lotus Yoga
Jacksonville’s energy is
different, she says, in part because
of the St. Johns River. In yoga, a
river that flows into the ocean is
special, even holy and auspicious.
The yogi loves being so near what
she views as a positive source of
energy.
“To be right there by the river
is amazing. There’s something
energetically about the river that is
helpful to us,” Hamilton-Hubbard
said.
After climbing a set of stairs
in a Stockton Street alleyway,
finding a yoga studio at the top is
a pleasant surprise. That’s exactly
what students find when they come
across Lotus Yoga, a communitybased
studio in Riverside. Coowner
Bethany Crawley has been
practicing for about eight years.
After an injury, she said yoga
helped her come back to her body
and shift her self-awareness.
As soon as she speaks,
the instructor’s soft, guiding
voice relaxes students before
class begins. With a focus on
mindfulness — Crawley describes
it as a way to hold our attention
in the same place as our body —
her family history as storytellers
becomes obvious as she teaches.
She pairs conversation with poses,
encouraging students to become
more mindful of their actions and
reactions.
Some of Crawley’s unique
skills include teaching seniors, the
physically restricted and helping
out in the medical field. “I’ve
always loved old people,” she
says with a laugh about her desire
to help the elderly. She teaches
four days a week at St. Vincent’s
Hospital as part of the Ornish Heart
Disease Reversal Program. The
cardiac patients involved, she says,
have been burdened with so many
physical limitations they are just
happy to be moving.
This yogi moved to Riverside
when she came to Jacksonville
around 1997, and she has seen
the area change significantly. She
says the community is growing
because of a basic human need
for connection and an increasing
feeling of safety to connect
within Riverside — a place she
calls “delicious” for people. For
her, it’s like living in a village,
and the safety to connect is the
“community glue.”
She describes the mix of
students and those who live in
and around Riverside as a “lovely
melding,” consisting of the young,
the beautifully marked, and those
who have lived here all their lives.
“I was watching Riverside
just light up with locally owned
businesses,” she said as her eyes
seemed to light up, too.
