In addition to conversational skills, you will now start to read and write more. This level offers you the chance to extend your vocabulary and develop your confidence in a range of situations including general conversation, negotiation or problem solving. These courses still have significant conversational components, but you have the opportunity to explore the culture, traditions and current affairs of the country in greater depth through cinema, literature, music and newspapers. ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION Level 3 Entitlement (or 19+ Advanced Learner Loan) may apply to you An Access course helps you make a fresh start or retrain for a new career. Ideal if you are a mature learner (19+ years) and want a career that builds on your life experience or you want to go to university but don’t have the qualifications or experience required. We offer options in: 0/6130/A4: Health & Social Care Professions You will study Level 3 modules in Human Physiology and either Sociology or Psychology. 0/6130/A8: Primary Education You will study Level 3 modules in Human Physiology and either Sociology or Psychology. 0/6130/A2: Social Sciences You will study Level 3 modules in Sociology, Psychology and Counselling. 0/6130/A5: Humanities You will study Level 3 modules in Sociology, History and Politics. 0/6130/A3: Business You will study Level 3 modules in Business Studies and Marketing. 0/6130/A1: Computer Programming You will study Level 3 modules in Programming and Web Development. WE HAVE A 100% SUCCESS RATE WITH OUR ACCESS STUDENTS! The Access to Higher Education diploma aims to build confidence, develop study and written skills and offer you the opportunity to improve your maths and English. This is a one year course. You will study the mandatory modules and receive tutorial support. This will mean attending the College for approximately 14.5 hours per week and depending on your unit choice, this may spread over the full week. You will also need to be prepared to study for a further 15-20 hours in your personal time. Depending on your Access course, with further study or training, your future career options include: Bio-medical science, Computer Programming, Counselling, Midwifery, Nursing (child, adult & mental health), Occupational Therapy, Operating Department Practitioner, Psychology, Radiography, Social Work, Sociology, Speech Therapy, Teaching, Working with vulnerable children & adults, Marketing, Business or Humanities. If you are aged 19 or over then you may be able to apply for a 19+ Advanced Learner Loan. Please note that this course is very popular and early booking is vital to ensure your place. I had always wanted to be a teacher and looked at Childcare courses, but then I found out about the Access route with the January start. I am hoping to do my BA Hons in Primary Education at the University of Bradford. I also volunteer at my son’s Primary School in Thornton. I like Shipley College because it is small and has a nice atmosphere.’ 21
