Welcome to this edition of Business News. Last month I had
the pleasure of being invited to join a UKTI trade delegation
to Munich, leaving from Southampton Airport on the new
twice daily BMI flight.
Our destination was to visit Airbus
and BMW, both based in the
Bavarian capital.
Each organisation was impressive
with a great deal of efficient working
practices in place helping to increase
productivity. But it was the BMW
robots that held a fascination for me
and perhaps an insight into our future.
The paint shop robots displayed
great dexterity opening doors and
closing boot lids. They even wore
overalls to keep them tidy and clean.
Welcome
Who knows what our future holds
with even more autonomous vehicles
coming in to the work place? Amazon
are set to launch their new unmanned
delivery service in London shortly.
What we do know is that we
need to keep up our relentless quest
in identifying new markets and
skills if we are to compete on the
world stage.
As for Munich I can thoroughly
recommend the trip and the beautiful
city whether it's leisure or pleasure.
Basingstoke ITEC is for looking for
employers to take on responsible
and highly motivated young people
We have nearly 30 years of experience
finding young people their first employment,
with an apprenticeship.
In September, we start another of our successful Traineeship
programmes, where we provide young people with employability
and technical I.T. skills.
They then need work experience that where possible, could lead to
an I.T. apprenticeship.
We have developed our I.T. training programme to be responsive to
employer requests. For example, we operate an I.T. support ticket
system and are introducing an introduction to Java Script.
Many employers return to us for their recruitment.
We are fully funded by the SFA and ESF for 16-18s, part funded
for 19+.
“I believe Basingstoke ITEC has a big advantage over traditional
educational establishments.
The students are learning the very latest best practices and picking
up tips with real-world examples. Technology moves at such a pace
that it is difficult for curriculums to keep up.
Apprenticeships are a great way for small businesses to get an
extra pair of hands while training a young person and giving a bit
back to the community.”
Marketing Expo astounding
success as Solent Businesses
GetSet for Growth
For the owners of a Solent
company, Close Knit Yarn
Café, running the business
was becoming increasingly difficult.
They had paid over the odds for
their premises, were suffering from
a lack of sales and low margins and,
like many small business owners,
were using personal credit cards to
finance business losses.
Working with the GetSet for Growth
advisors, the owners re-positioned the
café to focus on the quirky nature of
the business and redefined their target
market. They expanded their offering to
include knitting classes and partnered
with a local retailer so customers could
sample their produce.
In six months Close Knit increased
their sales by 32% and increased their
gross margin from 54% - 75%; turning
their loss into a net profit of 19%.
This story is far from being the
exception to the rule. Whether it is
finding customers, struggling with
cashflow or identifying ways to make
business models more profitable,
businesses across the country are
stifled by the challenges growing a
business can bring.
The GetSet Solent team.
The hugely successful Marketing Expo was attended by over 100 delegates.
That’s why GetSet for Growth, in
partnership with KPMG, recently held
their first ever Marketing Expo.
With over 100 delegates in attendance,
businesses came out in force to tap
into the wealth of knowledge on
offer from 19 different professional
marketing organisations.
And when businesses weren’t lapping
up the abundance of knowledge
and expertise on offer, they were
networking with one another -
sharing challenges, insights and,
most importantly, solutions to help
each other on their individual growth
journeys.
Helen Stratton, team leader for the
GetSet Solent team says, “From
speaking with our clients, we knew an
event like this would be of interest to
a lot of business owners, but we could
never have predicted the demand,
energy and excitement that ensued.
Both GetSet and KPMG were delighted
with the interest, attendance and
feedback from the event; it was a huge
success and we’re looking forward to
hosting the next one.”
GetSet for Growth Solent, with offices
in Southampton and Bournemouth,
are offering fully funded marketing
and finance support to ambitious
businesses across the Solent area.
By registering for the service,
businesses gain access to highly
informative workshops and
masterclasses as well as expert
insights and 1:1 support from very
experienced advisors; many of whom
have run their own businesses and
can empathise with the headaches
that come with running and growing a
small business.
Data Privacy by Design
Why organisations dealing with personal data should consider
designing their processes around it
There is currently much debate and uncertainty over the status
of the UK’s membership in the European Union. If the UK does
remain in the EU following the referendum on 23 June 2016, then
along with the much talked about changes to its membership,
the UK will also face significant changes to data protection law
as a result of the new General Data Protection Regulation
(“GDPR”).
Even if we do not remain within the
EU it is likely that companies doing
any business in, or with Europe will
need to comply with the GDPR if that
business involves any processing of
personal data originating within EU
or EEA member states. That could,
for example, just involve holding
the contact details of an employee
of a French business for use in
connection with work being done
for that business. It will become
very significant for businesses that
“trade” in data—for example buying
and selling contacts or offering data
hosting services.
The GDPR will replace the Data
Protection Act 1998, and equivalent
laws in other member states, with
one regulation which will govern data
processing inside the EU. The GDPR
is more extensive and significantly
more prescriptive than the current
law in the UK, and in order to ensure
compliance, many organisations
dealing with personal data will need
to adapt their processes.
Privacy by Design
Under Article 23 of the GDPR
data controllers must implement
appropriate technical and
organisational measures, such as
pseudonymisation, to ensure that
the data protection principles are
complied with and the necessary
safeguards are built into the
processing procedure. This is known
as “privacy by design”.
Privacy by Default
Furthermore, by default, only personal
data which is necessary for the
specific purpose of the processing is
to be processed, and it should not be
retained for longer than is necessary
to fulfil the processing requirements.
This is known as “privacy by default”.
In practical terms, what this means
for organisations processing personal
data is that privacy and security
measures need to be in place from
the very outset, prior to the obtaining
of the data for the purpose of
processing it. The IT systems used by
organisations should be developed to
ensure that privacy of personal data is
taken into account during the whole
life cycle of the system.
Under the GDPR, data subjects
will have the right to be forgotten,
that is to say, they have the right to
request that their data be deleted.
Organisations will need to ensure that
their systems enable the speedy and
accurate deletion of data following
any such request. Organisations will
also need to ensure that only those
people who need to have access to
the data can access it: it should not be
open to just anyone who has access
to the system.
As well as developing systems and
procedures that ensure compliance
with the GDPR from the outset,
organisations will also need to be
able to evidence their compliance.
For this reason, the procedures
should be documented, and should
be reflected in the functionality of the
organisation’s IT system.
Organisations processing personal
data should also check that their
contracts of employment with their
employees and third parties who
process any personal data for them
contain sufficient provisions to
ensure that the security of the data
is adequately protected, and that the
employees and third party contractors
are required to act in accordance with
the organisation’s privacy procedures.
Organisations would be well
advised to start reviewing their
procedures and systems now, and
making the necessary changes to
them, ahead of the GDPR coming into
force in late 2017.
Solent LEP launches new transport plan
with Solent MPs and Hampshire Chamber
In January 2015 the Solent LEP published
their Transforming Solent Growth Strategy
which outlines a vision for the future growth
of the local economy. Having successfully
secured £151.9m under the Solent Growth Deal,
the LEP has continued to work hard to help
this world‐class area to realise its ambitions
with a modern and resilient transport network
supporting increased productivity.
The Solent LEP recognises that it cannot afford to ignore
the critical role that transport infrastructure and operations
play in connecting key economic inputs - housing, skills,
investment and innovation. Its work with local partners
across all sectors has produced a Strategic Transport
Investment Plan that can support the wider Solent area,
including Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight,
to succeed and grow in a globally competitive economic
environment.
The Solent LEP and Hampshire Chamber of Commerce
met with Solent MPs in Westminster recently to discuss the
plan which outlines a series of transformative, evidencebased
proposals and highlights a range of transport
solutions for ensuring that the region attracts inward
investment to develop business clusters, nurture local skills
and talent, build on existing assets to compete successfully
in the UK and abroad, and deliver a transport system
befitting the size, strength and aspiration of the region.
Flick Drummond, MP for Portsmouth South, said: “This
plan is an ambitious blueprint for the future of the local
economy and will set out the investment that we need
to unlock the economic potential of Portsmouth and
the wider Solent area in the years to come. We need to
improve the links from our highly skilled industries with
the rest of the UK and the world and a well performing
transport infrastructure is vital for our continued economic
growth.”
Gary Jeffries, Chairman of Solent LEP, said: The
Strategic Transport Investment Plan provides a framework
within which we can accelerate the delivery of the Solent
Strategic Economic Plan, increasing productivity in the
area and enabling the economy and people of the Solent to
achieve their full potential. We look forward to continuing
to work with the business community, individual businesses
and local key partners, as well as central government and
its agencies on increasing productivity in the Solent.”
Representing the business community at the
Westminster launch, Stewart Dunn, CEO Hampshire
Chamber of Commerce, said: “In this increasingly urban
area, traffic jams and rail journey delays are the cause
of much frustration and, still worse, can be counted in
considerable hours of lost productivity. As the business
voice in the Solent, the Chamber has responded to many
local and national consultations over the years, in an effort
to focus attention on transport and logistics concerns and
to provide solutions, which it is pleased to see taken up.
A metro style, interconnected and sustainable travel is
the future.”
You’re in good company and represented by:
Welcome from Stewart Dunn
Chief Executive of Hampshire Chamber of Commerce
Across the county the Chamber of Commerce has local representation
through our unique network of local committees representing members’
interests. Each area committee meets monthly with an elected chair to
cover a host of topics to help local business.
In addition, the Tax Finance & Legal Committee and Planning & Transport
Committee meet each month to review and respond to government policies,
budgets and new legislation and local authority plans to ensure members’
interests are safeguarded. Below are the latest updates from our area
committees.
Kevin Stansfield
Chair Eastleigh
By the time that you read these
words, we will have held our
next meeting on Friday 3rd June
2016. We will continue to focus
on Property, People, Power and
Communication and we are still
looking for people in the Eastleigh
area that would like to be involved
in any of these. I look forward to
letting you know the way in which
our discussions are progressing in
my report here next month.
Hendry Taylor
Chair Andover
A recent joint networking event
held at the Museum of Army Flying
had more than 100 attendees,
which was a great success. There
is a comprehensive list of events in
the Andover area until the end of
the year and we continue to have
good attendance at our events. The
relationship with Romsey Chamber
is working well and we are sharing
a lot of information and working
together. We are currently working
on our action plan to move us
forward. We are also delighted that
Stockbridge Business Association
have now affiliated to the Chamber
allowing us to work across the
whole of the Test Valley area.
Sandeep Sesodia
Chair Southampton
Business Board
Hampshire Chamber of Commerce
in conjunction with the Mayor of
Southampton's office was asked to
nominate a company in recognition
of their significant contribution
to the city of Southampton. We
received various nominations and
after discussion and consideration
we came to the decision to
nominate Southampton Solent
University as the recipient of the
Southampton Business Award 2016.
Southampton Solent University
has brought a substantial number
of students into the city and
has improved the cultural life
and economic life of the city.
In addition, the University has
significantly contributed in the
development of the city centre
particularly with a number
of student accommodation
developments. Furthermore, the
University has supported the
launch of a number of media
start-up businesses and supported
the Chamber of Commerce for
a number of years. This has
enabled the Chamber to locate its
Hampshire Chamber of Commerce
Southampton office within the
Business School at the Sir James
Mathews Building, facilitating the
business community to interact
fully with the education sector.
Emma Watts
There are just a couple of weeks to
go now until the biggest world‐wide
gathering of representatives from
the aerospace industry. This year
more than twenty international
pavilions are expected, including the
largest ever participation from the
US and China.
For Rushmoor & Hart Committee
this is a significant time in our
calendars, an opportunity for
businesses, both large and small,
to engage with this multi‐national
industry. The Farnborough
Airshow also provides an exciting
opportunity for the public to see
a little of what goes on behind
the scenes and to enjoy the best
flying displays and experience
a great day out with attractions
such as the Brooklands and Fast
and the UK Drone Show. From the
public airshow arena, experience
guest interviews, competitions and
feature programmes, not to mention
the award winning commentary
alongside the flying display.
To put the Farnborough Airshow
into perspective, the previous
edition in 2014 saw $204bn worth
Julie McLatch
Chair Basingstoke
I was delighted to represent the
Basingstoke committee at the
celebration of the Queen’s 90th
birthday at Winchester Cathedral.
It was a real honour to be a part of
such an extraordinary life event, and
the admiration and respect for the
royal family was evident throughout
the day.
In Basingstoke town centre the
BID has finished its first month,
and the new Chief Exec Karen
Wild has definitely found her
feet in the area. I chair the Place
for People committee, which is
about improving the town for
visitors and people who live and
work in the area, and already a
number of good ideas have come
out of our meetings. If you have
any issues which you would like
the Basingstoke Together BID to
address please contact me at
An article has been published in
the June issue on Data Privacy by
Design about the new GDPR EU
regulations to be effective in 2017
but as yet there is little guidance on
how to prepare for them. Whether
the EU referendum result is remain
or leave, the regulations will have an
effect on UK businesses.
The committee had a
presentation from Chamber
member ThinkMarble Ltd on cyber
security and from discussion
afterwards it became obvious
that this topic should be a regular
agenda item, so that this committee
could keep abreast of developments
on this and alert Chamber members
accordingly.
Stephen Gates
Chair Winchester
The Committee continues to
monitor progress on the large redevelopment
of the Silver Hill area
of Winchester. The previous attempt
at re-development, some 15 years in
the making, has now ended, with the
Council terminating their contract
with the developer. A period of "reengagement"
on the development
of this important area in Winchester
is due to start after the summer and
the Committee will be ensuring there
is active business engagement in
the new round of consultations. It is
however likely that there will be a 5-6
year "lull" in the re-development of this
area and therefore it will be important
to see if there are any "interim" uses
that this area can be put to for the
benefit of businesses in the meantime.
In conjunction with Winchester
BID and the Council, The Retail
Group has undertaken an
independent survey of Winchester's
markets on local business. The
survey has concluded that the
presence of the market is broadly
positive for local businesses (and
indeed the market traders are small
businesses in themselves) although it
has identified that there is a need for
more proactive management of the
market (both in terms of regularity,
size and location) by the Council.
Mark Miller
Chair Planning
A presentation by Southampton City
Council’s Senior Flood Risk Officer
advised of the council’s decision to
pursue the Frontline flood defence
option and strengthen the existing
quayside to avoid tidal flooding of
the industrial area west of the Itchen
River which would have an effect
on some 160 businesses. The P&T
committee agreed to support the
Council’s bid to the Solent LEP for
£10million towards the estimated
£45million cost.
Peer‐to‐peer lending:
finance for
businesses
like yours
We’re often told that small businesses are
the heart of our economy, but these companies
often struggle to get finance through
traditional means.
Fortunately peer‐to‐peer is able to be more flexible than
the banks. The finance provided by peer‐to‐peer lending
is ideal for small and medium sized businesses.
We lend to small businesses, those without
bricks‐and‐mortar security and those with variable
cashflow. We finance capital expenditure, recruitment,
stock or simply working capital. We can tailor the loan to
suit your needs with different terms or payment holidays.
We’ve financed everything from scaffolders to software
developers, marketers to manufacturers.
Crowdlending to business grew by 84% in 2015, and
now provides 13% of all small business lending in the UK.
The finance we provide is helping SMEs embrace their
potential. What could we do for you? Find out more at
Business intelligence firm ITWB has just
completed an information system for
Southampton anti‐poverty charity SCRATCH.
The project unifies data on SCRATCH volunteers into online
reports, which are now used for funding applications and
daily business, fulfilling ITWB’s ongoing commitment to
deliver low‐cost reporting software to smaller enterprises
struggling to manage their information needs.
Company director Andrew Taylor said: “We really want
charities and small businesses to benefit from business
intelligence tools in the way that large commercial
organisations already do.”
Charity IT manager Cathy Laird said revolutionising
their outmoded system has enabled them to become more
efficient. "Some of our funding is based on our ability to
train and equip volunteers for the workplace, so having
the numbers we need has made a huge difference to the
security of our long term future, which is good news for
Legal eagles achieve a
soaraway success for charity
Adventurous staff at a Basingstoke law firm
are celebrating an impressive achievement after
pulling in the pounds for a charity that is
raising vital funds for a unique local cancer
treatment centre.
The team at Clarke & Son Solicitors made fellow Hampshire
Chamber member Ark Cancer Centre Charity their charity
of the year for 2015, and several members of the team
really threw themselves into fundraising challenges to
support the good cause.
Support staff, solicitors and partners took on various
fundraising feats under the team name The Lost Marbles.
Climbing Snowdon was followed a few months later by an
abseiling adventure in Cheddar Gorge before an intrepid
treble challenge was rounded off towards the end of the
year by those who took on a 6km obstacle course.
Members of the Clarke & Son team were delighted to
present a cheque for £2,115 to Ark Cancer Centre Charity
trustee Merv Rees and Mark Jones, director of fundraising
and communications for the charity.
The presentation of the cheque is a boost for the charity,
as is the news that the Clarke & Son team have voted to
Rachael Fidler
Managing Director, HTP Training
No wonder more
employers than ever
are introducing
apprenticeships into
their business
D
eveloping the skills your
organisation needs
Rachael Fidler is the
Managing Director of HTP
Training, one of the country’s leading
apprenticeship providers.
The Government’s drive to create three
million apprentices by 2020 has led
to the development of new
apprenticeship standards
and forthcoming changes in
Government funded training.
Although concerns have been
raised about these changes,
I believe they offer increased
flexibility and the opportunity
for organisations to develop
apprenticeship programmes
which fit even closer with the
needs of the business and
workforce.
The new apprenticeship
standards will offer a framework
of contextualised, accredited
workforce development whatever the size
of your business or the sector in which you
operate. At HTP we have been working
alongside employers and awarding bodies
to develop the new standards. Whilst
understanding the requirements of the new
standards and funding rules takes time,
help is available from training providers.
Statistics published by the Government
(www.gov.uk) in the Guide for Employers
state 89% of apprentice employers say
apprentices make their business more
productive and the majority of businesses
acknowledge that apprentices have helped
cut recruitment and training costs.
The new standards will enable
participants to develop their knowledge,
skills, and qualifications where appropriate,
relevant to the needs of employers in each
sector and the detailed assessment plans at
each level provide clear confirmation of the
competencies achieved at every step of the
career ladder.
No wonder more employers than
ever are introducing apprenticeships into
their business.
With offices in Portsmouth and the Isle
of Wight our team of vocational training
specialists are available to provide free
advice and guidance to businesses across
the south. We will help you to create
innovative programmes of learning and
assist with the recruitment of apprentices
in addition to developing your existing
members of staff, including those who
mentor your apprentices.
Chile – Latin America
for beginners
Chile is part of the Pacific Alliance, comprising Chile,
Mexico, Peru and Colombia – the most prosperous
countries in Latin America. Within the alliance, goods and
assets can be moved freely – this means that access to Chile
equals access to the rest of the Pacific Alliance, making
Chile a great stepping stone into the rest of the continent
as well as an attractive regional headquarters!
Chile ranks first in the Index of Economic Freedom as well as having
the highest GDP per capita in Latin America. It tops the region in
several global rankings and its open economic model has developed
expertise and efficiencies to compete in a globalised economy.
It is a liberal, open market economy, with strong macroeconomic
stability due to a solid fiscal responsibility rule, low unemployment
and an inflation‐targeting Central Bank. Most importantly, the
Chilean market’s sophisticated demand for ever more innovation
and efficiency makes it a good match for the kind of products and
services Britain can offer.
UK and China sign
agreement to boost exports
UK Export Finance (UKEF) and the China Export
& Credit Insurance Corporation (SINOSURE)
have committed to a framework for strengthened
co‐operation, paving the way for increased UK
and Chinese exports.
The agreement, signed recently in London, creates a
framework for UKEF and SINOSURE to co‐operate in
supporting contracts in third countries involving both UK
and Chinese exports. The move is designed to enhance the
two export credit agencies’ ability to support exports by
increasing their risk capacity for projects sourcing goods
and services from the UK and China.
The agreement will also facilitate co‐operation between
Chinese and UK firms as they compete for business in
other countries. UKEF and SINOSURE will work together
to identify opportunities for trade in capital goods,
equipment and services involving co‐operation between
the two countries.
Louis Taylor, UKEF Chief Executive Officer, welcomed
the agreement, saying: “This agreement creates huge
opportunities for British exporters. UK companies can now
work with Chinese firms to make their joint offering ever
more competitive.
“And by helping to share market expertise and
increasing risk capacity, UKEF is supporting UK
exporters to win contracts, not just fulfil those they have
already won.”
Mr Wang Yi, Chairman of SINOSURE, said: ‘SINOSURE
BH Live achieves
Investors in People
Silver standard
BH Live, a social enterprise and the south coast’s leading
operator of leisure and event venues, has been awarded
the Investors in People Silver standard. This recognises its
commitment to realising the potential of their people.
Established in 2010, and with more than 1,200 employees, BH Live
is at the heart of the UK’s growing social economy. It manages
more than 40 event venues, leisure centres, attractions, cafés and
bars in partnership with local authorities and leisure trusts across
Bournemouth, Poole, Portsmouth, London and the Home Counties.
BH Live’s focus is to get more people more active, attract bigger
entertainment audiences to a diverse range of cultural and artistic
events, and to support the local economy by generating economic
benefit from major conference, exhibitions and events.
In 2015, BH Live hosted more than 400 shows, sold over half a
million cultural, sporting and entertainment tickets, clocked up 2.2
million leisure centre visits and welcomed 93,000 conference and
exhibition delegates. This generated an estimated £48.5 million for
the local economy.
Investors in People is the UK's leading accreditation for business
improvement through people management, and provides a wealth of
resources for businesses to innovate, improve and grow, with a focus
on good people making great business.
Paul Devoy, Head of Investors in People, said: “Achieving the
Investors in People Silver standard is something that any organisation
should be truly proud of. It is the sign of a company which is very
committed to good people management practice and we’d like to
congratulate BH Live on their achievement.”
To date, of the 14,154 Investors in People accredited organisations,
only 13% have achieved the Silver standard and above. In achieving
this, BH Live has demonstrated that its people are going above and
beyond to ensure the organisation succeeds.
Commenting on the award, Peter Gunn, Chief Executive for BH
Live, said: “We are in a people industry and people are at the heart
of everything we do. Our commitment to giving customers a great
experience is fundamental to sustained success and growth. This
achievement recognises the value we place on our people and
demonstrates our investment in their continuous improvement.”
Although BB has adopted Diabetes Research
it was agreed to share this occasion with Brain
raised on the day to them!
Malcolm Archibald, founder of BB and
a director of Assure U, commented: “Both
charities attend the networking group. There
are no exclusions and no joining fees either.
“A pay as you go principle with no
compulsory attendance is refreshing and is
appreciated by more than 500 members we
now have in the group. As our birthday lunch,
at No Man’s Fort, was on the same day as
Wear A Hat Day, the UK’s premier brain tumour
both charities.”
Claire Levy, community fundraiser for DRWF
commented: “We have received tremendous
support from Business Builders and benefited
greatly from their generosity and involvement
with all sorts of activities. It is an excellent
way for local business to include a corporate
social responsibility activity by collaborating
Gareth has previously held senior managerial positions in both the
Gareth said: "It really was a big decision to move back to work
heading up their in‐house marketing teams. But the opportunity at
Carswell Gould immediately attracted me. There is something really
Southampton‐based technology that
halves water bills launches globally
A new shower system with technology
inspired by jet engines, aerospace and automotive
engineering, proven to halve water usage and
costs, launched at a major trade show for the gym
and leisure industry in Cologne, Germany.
Kelda Technology, which is based at Southampton Science
Park, has designed and developed its unique shower
technology to use half the water of an ordinary shower, in
partnership with the University of Southampton.
The shower system has been proven to cut water bills
in half using unique, patented ‘water‐in‐air’ technology.
With a Kelda Technology shower, water is broken into
droplets by the air to form a spray and is accelerated using
a jet‐type nozzle. This technology has been commercially
trialled in a national gym chain in the UK with these
positive results.
The lower water usage offers huge benefits for the
environment, halves one of the largest operating costs
for businesses such as leisure centres, hotels and medical
centres, and delivers an improved showering experience for
customers. The showers can be easily retrofitted to existing
systems with minimal disruption to business.
Kelda Technology is also a member of SETsquared, the
world’s top university business incubator and enterprise
partnership between the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter,
Southampton and Surrey.
Briers grows with Smith & Williamson
A UK specialist in fashionable footwear brands,
gardening gloves and accessories has appointed
an accountancy, investment management and tax
group as part of its expansion strategy.
Briers, headquartered at Wincanton in Somerset and
founded in 1999, has enlisted the assurance services of
the south coast office of Smith & Williamson, a Hampshire
Chamber member.
Julie Mutton, an assurance and business services
partner, and Paul Duckworth, a tax partner, both from the
Southampton practice, lead the work.
Sharmini Martin, Briers' finance director, said: "Smith
& Williamson has a reputation for working with ambitious
companies and entrepreneurs. This is a really good fit
for us and we are looking forward to working together.
Customer demand continues to grow and we've added
more than 220 new products for 2016.
"With expansion, through own‐brand and licensed
products, comes extra financial responsibility. Julie, Paul
and their colleagues at Smith & Williamson have the
expertise and credentials to help take our trusted brand
to the next level."
Julie said: "Briers was looking for a firm with a great
reputation for building long‐term relationships with their
clients, as well as the ability to create solutions when
looking at all aspects of the company's finances.
"The wellies, along with branded clogs, shoes, short
wellies, ankle boots, gloves and garden accessories,
have a loyal customer following.
"On the back of this strong demand, Briers is looking
to develop its product range for stockists, such as retailers
and garden centres. We'll be stepping into Briers' financial
shoes to help the independent retailer take the next step
in growth."
Affecting thousands of workers
in Andover, Active Staff
comments on the recently
introduced National
Living Wage.
Introduced on 1st April, the National
Living Wage requires all Andover
employers to pay minimum wage
staff, aged over 25, an extra 50p per
hour. Part of the Government’s plan
to steadily increase the rate to £9
an hour by 2020, it affects around
nine million workers in the UK.
Andover‐based recruitment agency
Active Staff explains the impact of
this on the local community.
Lisa Armstrong, Director of Active
Staff, said: “The new £7.20 per hour
minimum wage will benefit thousands
of over 25s in Andover, with the
minimum salary of a full‐time worker
over 25 rising from £12,194 to £13,104
annually. This will help local people
tackle inflation, giving both individuals
and families more household income.
Andover is home to a wide range of
local employers, from large corporate
FEET‐FIRST: Briers, a specialist in fashionable footwear brands, gardening gloves
and accessories, has appointed the South Coast office of Smith & Williamson, the
accountancy and investment management group, to provide audit and tax services.
How the National Living Wage affects Andover
organisations such as Stannah, Lloyds
Banking Group, Simplyhealth and
Be Wiser, to many new and smaller
businesses which include Abel & Cole
and Lenham Storage. The introduction
of the National Living Wage will affect
all these businesses in different ways,
however, it will be important for all
sized businesses to assess their staff
wages to ensure legal compliance. In
general, Active Staff hopes companies
will benefit from the more attractive
What lies beneath?
Kevin Parish, associate
director at the south coast
office of Smith & Williamson,
poses key questions you
need to consider when
running a corporate or
trading group.
Have you been involved in a
company purchase or merger or have
you sold trading a trading business
and/or major assets?
Do you have more than one company
in the group performing substantially
the same trade or activity?
Have you previously consolidated
your trading activities from a number
of different companies into a smaller
number of operating companies?
Have you run projects through
special purpose vehicles that have
long since ceased?
Have you discontinued certain
trades or activities?
Many successful businesses will
produce at least one “yes” to these
questions. If you are one of them
then it might be time to ask some
further questions.
Are there some companies in
the group that no longer need
to be there?
If there are companies that have been
dormant for a year or two then it’s
time to ask why they are still there.
It is now so easy to incorporate and
register a company that it is no longer
worth keeping one in the wings just
in case.
What risks are these companies
presenting?
Through the passage of time,
management’s knowledge of dormant
companies in the group and their
trading histories fades and the ability
to deal with any issues that arise
reduces.
Some companies will pose little risk,
whilst others may have left a ticking
time bomb of potential issues, such
as long forgotten guarantees or
claims from normal business hazards
(including unexpected claims from
former employees or customers).
What can be gained by taking action?
• Save the administrative and
compliance costs for these
companies.
• Bring finality to any known or
unknown contingent claims.
• Return balance sheet value to
active companies within the group
or to shareholders.
• If further investment or a trade
sale is contemplated a clean group
structure could lead to a better price
and less costly due diligence.
Can the group get a benefit from
rationalising its trading activities?
If you have answered yes to the first
two questions it is worth considering
whether there are good commercial
reasons for the existing number of
trading companies. Putting similar
or identical businesses together in
a controlled way can bring greater
benefits, such as:
• Economies of scale and operating
efficiencies.
• Reduced tax compliance
(VAT, Corporation Tax,
Employment taxes).
• Reduced internal administration
(management accounting and
reporting etc.).
• Fewer sets of annual accounts
to prepare.
What steps should we be taking?
If the above has a certain resonance
about your organisation then it is time
to consider undertaking a review of
the group and assessing the operating
benefits and reduced risks that a
cleaner group structure could bring.
Re‐organising a group is always a
balancing act between the potential
rewards and costs of the process.
We have helped many organisations
going through this process with both
planning and implementation. If you
think the issues above may affect
your group then we would be happy
to discuss them with you without
obligation.
Meetings, Conferences and Events
What to look for when booking venues
If you’re not used to organising regular events, booking a venue can be a very stressful time and it can
be easy to forget something important. Writing a checklist of important questions to ask when looking
for a venue is a good place to start. Here are a few things to consider.
Type of Venue: What is the right
type of venue for your event?
What will the guests expect from
this event? Think of the size of the
venue; smaller venues are great for
intimate meetings or private events
with seating but consider how many
delegates you’re expecting and what
they will be doing.
Price: Potentially one of the first
things you will think of is your budget
and the cost of the venue. You must
think about how much you expect to
make from the event and how much
you can put towards the venue price.
Remember that sometimes the old
adage of ‘you get what you pay for’
can be true.
Location/Transportation: Think about
how easy it is to get to the venue,
are there easy public transport links
and enough parking for visitors?
Remember to think about your
audience and how they may be
travelling to you.
Catering: If you plan to cater the
event you need to ask whether they
have their own catering company
or if you’re able to use an external
provider.
Technology: Do you need a PA
system, microphone, projector and
screen? Some venues will have this
on site and others will not. Make a list
of all the equipment you need to run
your event and make sure you know
who’s providing what.
Availability: You can’t book the venue
if they haven’t got any availability.
When planning for events or meetings
try and contact venues as early as
possible to ensure they have the dates
and times you want. It seems simple
but sometimes the most obvious stuff
gets forgotten.
Opportunity Havant
Sandy Hopkins, Chief Executive at Havant Borough Council,
supported by the Economic Development Team hosted two
Ministerial visits earlier this year. The first was by James Wharton,
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for
Communities and Local Government and the second was from
Brandon Lewis, Minister of State for Housing and Planning.
This is part of the Prosperity Havant strategy being delivered by
the Team to promote Havant to investors and developers and grow
the local economy.
James Wharton was shown the
infrastructure and ground work for
phase one of a 80,000 sq ft building
for Fatface, who are expanding their
current operation in Havant into
Dunsbury Hill Business Park. There is
over £15m being spent on developing
the infrastructure for the site. The site
will provide over 725,000 sq ft of high
quality commercial space, including
a hotel and conference centre and
support thousands of new jobs.
Brandon Lewis met with P&I
Generators of Havant on the site
of their new operation being built
on Harts Farm Way and toured the
Brockhampton West site at the
intersection of the A3m and A27
with potential for development. The
investment in this part of Havant is
exceeding £40m which includes the
Solent Road retail section with a new
Marks and Spencer and Next opening
this summer.
Wayne Hemingway
talks about
Portsmouth
Guildhall
potential
Local businesses joined
the Portsmouth Cultural
Trust (PCT), the charity that
runs the Portsmouth Guildhall,
and award winning designer
Wayne Hemingway OBE at
the first of their information
events on Thursday 12th May
to hear about the latest plans
to transform the Guildhall into
a cultural hub for the region.
In between networking guests heard
from PCT Chief Executive Andy
Grays on what their project, entitled
Guildhall Renaissance, would achieve
and the benefits this would have,
not just for the venue, but the local
economy and people of Portsmouth.
Like many similar venues across the
UK the Guildhall is facing reduced
public funding and the PCT realise
that the venue needs to be updated
to increase profitability and to ensure
its long-term sustainability.
Andy was followed by Wayne
Hemingway whose company
Hemingway Design are the “design
champions” for the project and who
will lead on design, programming
and identity for the Guildhall. Wayne
Hemingway told the guests: “I’m in
the lucky position where I only take
on projects which excite me. This
project excites me. The Guildhall
is a sleeping giant with masses of
potential; there are so many spaces
that can be used for new and exciting
things. I don’t look at this as just
being the Guildhall, it is a complex –
a place for all that will become the
cultural heart of Portsmouth”
would like some balanced scorecard or
strategy management training then contact us
today. We can provide a variety of on-site
courses and consultancy to suit your needs.
For information about our strategic facilition
workshop: www.intrafocus.com/workshop
We asked Clive Keyte,
Managing Director at
Intrafocus to explain why
focus is so important
Q: What do you mean by “focus is the future”,
surely you mean focus on the future?
CK: No. Focusing on the future has it’s place, but I
really do mean, Focus is the future. If I could give
only one piece of advice to business leaders it would
be ”focus on what matters.” Business leaders and
especially business owners get far too involved in
the day-to-day running of their companies
Q: Surely that’s a good thing. Shouldn’t they be
actively involved?
CK: Yes of course, but it is a question of degree. A
business leader needs to lead. Employees look to
them to steer the ship not maintain the engines. The
future of the business is in the leaders' hands. They
should be concentrating on building the business.
That is, sifting through the hundred and one things
they could be doing and picking one, two or three
strategic priorities for the company.
Q: That seems easy enough, job done!
CK: Aha, sorry it does not stop there. For every
strategic priority, a set of business objectives has to
be set, and then a set of KPIs (see opposite for the
definition of a KPI). For each KPI there needs to be an
appropriate target. Only then, can you look at what
projects or initiatives need to be put in place to drive
a strategy. If a good strategic process is in place, it's
easy. If not, even the best business leaders will fall at
the first hurdle.
Q: This may be a daft question, but what exactly
is a KPI?
CK: A KPI is a Key Performance Indicator. A business
measure not a personal measure. It tells us whether
or not a business is succeeding. There do not need
to be many, but they do need to be aligned to
business objectives.
Q: So, priorities generate objectives which in
turn generate KPIs, targets and then projects or
initiatives. That’s a lot of work!
CK: Exactly, that is why focus is so important. There
is an ancient saying that is still true today; "plan one
thing, and you will succeed, plan three things and
you will succeed in one, plan ten things and you will
fail in everything." All of the greatest business
leaders have been focused. They concentrate on the
few critical things that really make a difference.
Q: But business is not like that, something is
always going to turn up that needs attention
CK: There is no doubt about that. But it does not
excuse a lack of focus. It is important to get the
balance right, that's where we can help. We can
provide the method, tools and techniques to ensure
that business leaders concentrate on the things that
matter. Time needs to be set aside to figure out how
to do this. Go to www.intrafocus.com/workshop
"The balance between learning and
practical exercises to help move our
strategy forward was perfect. If you
need to really kick-start your strategic
activities, Intrafocus is the company to
go to."
Before looking into the statistics behind your website, you need
to identify what purpose your site is serving for the business.
Is the website there to provide information, for e-commerce,
branding purposes or something else? If you don't know
what the purpose is, it's likely your users won't either.
Understanding analytics allow you to see where
audience members are based, what pages they look at, time
spent on your site, which links and features they interact
with, which adverts were most effective and much more.
If you know how people are using your website and even
better, if you know why, you can make sure that your site is
supporting you in the best way possible. If users are leaving
your website from a specific page you may want to review
the content. If certain marketing campaigns are driving
more traffic to your website than others it might be time to
ditch the ideas that are not working. Most importantly, are
you converting visitors to your website into enquiries and
sales? If not, why not?
There are a whole host of other providers out there
as well as marketing agencies that can help you. Do your
research and find the service most appropriate to your
business needs and skill level.
Chambers work together for a great cause
Hampshire Chamber of Commerce is delighted that Romsey
Chamber of Commerce and Industry is affiliated to them.
This affiliation bore fruit on Sunday
17th April when Mark Baulch, Business
Development Manager for Hampshire
Chamber of Commerce, joined the
ranks of the Romsey Chamber team
at the Barratt Homes Charity Relay
Marathon 2016. A team of ten each
raced around Broadlands for two
laps of a 1.3 mile course in order to
complete the marathon distance for
charity. A special baton with a chip
inside recorded the efforts of each
team member and had to be handed
over in the traditional way, adding an
extra element of team work to the
event. Twenty six teams entered the
relay, which was organised by the
Rotary Club of Romsey.
Mark said: ‘It is great to be able
to support Romsey Chamber in this
practical way and to show teamwork
and collaboration.’
Peter Speirs, President of Romsey
Chamber, added: ‘I am really proud
of all of the team and it is great to have
Hampshire Chamber here assisting us.’
Beaulieu events raise £18,000
for hospice charity and education trust
Beaulieu fundraising events have raised an
impressive £18,000 which has been presented
to Naomi House Children’s Hospice
and the Countryside Education Trust (CET).
A cheque for £9,000 has been given to each of the
charities, after a year of fundraising at events including the
popular Chefs’ Night and Music Extravaganza at Beaulieu.
The Chefs' Night was supported by some of the
New Forest’s top eateries with an event in the Domus of
Beaulieu Abbey. A capacity audience enjoyed an evening
of haute cuisine cookery demonstrations by chefs from
the Montagu Arms Hotel, Carey’s Manor, The Pig, Lanes
of Lymington, the Fleur‐de‐Lys at Boldre and Goodwood
House. The special guest was TV chef Angela Hartnett who,
together with Luke Holder, represented Lime Wood Hotel.
The chefs formed two teams for a Ready, Steady, Cook
style competition and their dishes were auctioned to the
hungry audience.
Coronation Street and The Bill actor Andrew Lancel also
hosted a festive Music Extravaganza in Beaulieu Abbey
Church. The concert featured a number of professional and
amateur performers, who gave their time free of charge
for the charities. Among them were musicians Katherine
Crouch on flute and bass saxophone and violinist Rose
Gosney, who is just nine years old. Singer songwriters
Mark Ponsford and Jason Noble accompanied themselves
CET’s Jane Cooper receives a cheque from Jan Hoy, while her assistant Nicky
Liam White, who has built a strong local following with
his Michael Bublé style singing.
Charity events organiser Jan Hoy said: “I would
like to thank everyone who has generously given their
time to help raise such a terrific amount of money for
both charities.”
Office number adds up for Eight Wealth
A wealth management company with more than 3,500
clients in the UK has moved into a new Hampshire office
following a stunning refurbishment.
Part of Eight Wealth's new office at Solent House on Solent Business Park, Whiteley, Hampshire, following
refurbishment. From left, Emma Lockey of CBRE, Andrew Saunders of Vibe Business Interiors, Russell Mogridge
of Hughes Ellard and Matthew Riggs, the managing director of Eight Wealth.
Eight Wealth, which has 12 financial
advisers and 21 support staff, now
operates out of Solent House at
Solent Business Park, one of the
leading business parks on the
south coast.
Specialist engineers at Hampshire‐based
Aqua Cooling in Fareham have transformed
the floor panel manufacturing process for
a leading flooring company after routine
maintenance sparked the bespoke design of
an innovative, energy‐saving cooling solution.
Leading manufacturer of commercial floor coverings
Polyflor, part of James Halstead plc, has installed Aqua’s
new air‐blast pre‐cooler in its Stockton‐on‐Tees plant.
According to Aqua Cooling engineer Joe Konarski,
Aqua’s new ground‐breaking chiller system is likely to
save Polyflor a minimum of £11,000 a year in reduced
operating costs and energy savings and will bring added
environmental benefits, not least by making the most of
the free cooling capacities inherent in the new system.
Joe Konarski said: “Polyflor’s previous cooling process
was underperforming because of damage caused
by contaminated water particles in the old system’s
evaporator. When considering this problem, we realised
we could devise an entirely new tailor‐made cooling
system for Polyflor that would be altogether more efficient
and reliable.
The company signed a 10‐year
lease on the 5,867 sq ft first floor of
three‐storey Solent House at 1460
Parkway, Whiteley, close to the asking
rent of £15 per sq ft.
Hughes Ellard, the independent
commercial property consultancy
covering the Solent Corridor, and
a Hampshire Chamber member,
acted for London‐based property
investor XLB.
Solent House, which has one
remaining top‐floor office available for
rent at 5,867 sq ft, is being marketed
jointly by Hughes Ellard and CBRE.
Russell Mogridge, the business
space director for Hughes Ellard,
said: “The high‐spec space at Eight
Wealth is on a par with offices in the
City of London – it is a lovely working
environment.
“There is a similar‐sized office
directly above Eight Wealth which
we are now marketing – we expect
that to be let within the next six
months, given the strong demand for
Grade A office space and a distinct
lack of supply in that category along
the M27 between Southampton
and Portsmouth.”
Quoting rent for the top floor
of Solent House is £15 per sq ft per
annum exclusive.
Hughes Ellard is also marketing
Eight Wealth’s former 2,894 sq ft office
at 1580 Parkway, with 16 car spaces and
a short‐term two‐year lease.
Energy saving tech from south coast engineers
“Rather than simply being satisfied with a quick‐fix
or a temporary solution, we wanted to create a new
solution altogether, one that would both benefit the
client financially and provide an energy‐efficient and
environmentally‐friendlier alternative.
“The new system we designed for Polyflor currently
cools the manufacturing process for one of the company’s
flooring ranges — now we are adapting the new Aqua
technology for use across Polyflor’s product range,
effectively future‐proofing our system for the benefit of
this client and, potentially, other manufacturers employing
similar process techniques,” added Joe.
Aqua’s design features an automatic ambient
air pre‐cooling system which massively reduces the
refrigerated chiller compressor load in low ambient air
temperatures. Over a year this reduces chiller electrical
usage by approximately 65 per cent. When ambient
temperatures are less than 8°C, the chiller compressors are
de‐activated, allowing Polyflor to benefit from complete
free cooling.
The system design not only saves compressor energy
but also reduces the mechanical load on the chillers,
reducing on‐going maintenance costs and enhancing the
life‐span of the equipment.
Origins of
extreme
weather
investigated
by Southampton scientists
Research into the role of the ocean
in extreme weather in Europe by
Southampton scientist Dr Aurélie
Duchez from the National
Oceanography Centre (NOC), was
showcased at an event in Paris, hosted
by The AXA Research Fund.
This project has been funded since September
2015 by The AXA Research Fund, and is a
collaboration between AXA, the NOC and
the UK Met Office.
Using a mix of observations from the Atlantic
Ocean and model output, this two year project
aims to shed light on the influence of the ocean
on extreme weather events, such as heat waves,
droughts, floods and severe winters.
Dr Aurélie said: “The ocean is key to
understanding extreme weather because it
stores ninety percent of the planet’s heat, as well
as being the dominant mode by which that heat
is redistributed around the planet. However, the
oceans’ feedback into the climate is a new topic
in research with many open questions.
“Currently, there are many uncertainties
regarding the role of the ocean on the
development of weather extremes and how
future changes in the ocean circulation may
affect their frequency and intensity. Anomalous
sea surface temperature fluctuations linked
to the ocean circulation are potentially an
important driver of hurricanes and severe
winters but also of Central European heat
waves.”
This project will use state‐of‐the‐art
model simulations in combination with real
observations to better determine the precursors
of European weather extremes, and assess
whether the next generation of climate models
used by the Met Office will be able to better
forecast these devastating events.
Dr Aurélie added: “Better understanding
the role of the ocean on climate and European
extremes in particular is something really new,
and the NOC is a really fantastic place to start
to answer this question because of its access
to uniquely long data records and high quality
modelling outputs.”
By investigating the mechanisms linking
oceanic conditions to severe weather events,
the outcomes of this project will enable better
prediction and preparation.
Best feet forward
for Chamber team
on night shift
An intrepid team from Hampshire Chamber of
Commerce will be putting their best feet forward to take
part in a gruelling 40‐mile midnight hike this summer.
Business Development Manager Mark Baulch, Credit Controller Eddie
Bell, Programme Manager Richard Hall and Membership Manager
David Kemshall are set to take part in The Plod across the South
Downs Way to raise cash for charity.
Mark said: “We all wanted to do something for charity this year.
We felt Action Medical Research for Children was ideal as their good
work is done in hospitals in Hampshire, including Southampton.
The team have been undergoing a tough training programme and
expect to have walked hundreds of miles by July, ready for the stroke
of midnight just north of Brighton. The beautiful South Downs Way
will take them to the finish line at Beachy Head, Eastbourne. They will
climb 4,900ft (1,500m) and are likely to burn 5,000 calories.
Mark added: “It is a big challenge, both physically and then
mentally, and hiking in darkness is not easy. We will be wearing head
torches and refuelling regularly at checkpoints on the way.”
Chamber Chief Executive Stewart Dunn said: “I have the utmost
respect for our gallant team who will be yomping away while the rest
of the country sleeps. They are raising money for a brilliant cause.”
The Hampshire Chamber networking meeting took a slower pace
in April, with a cruise on the Basingstoke Canal. Over 30 businesses
boarded the John Pinkerton II, and enjoyed the peaceful two and a
half hour cruise and the beautiful Hampshire countryside.
The Basingstoke canal was first
conceived as an economical means of
transportation for the development of
agriculture in central Hampshire, and
after much deliberation about the best
route, and a slow start in construction
due to external influencing factors the
canal was completed in 1794 at a cost
of £154,463.
After its completion the challenges
continued to emerge; under-usage
meant it was not financially viable
and the road improvements from
1750 meant that the canal was losing
its appeal.
Throughout its history the canal
went through various different owners,
until it fell into disrepair until 1966. At
this time the Surrey and Hampshire
Canal Society formed and embarked
on a seven-year campaign for public
ownership and a policy of restoration.
A successful outcome was signalled
Over 30 businesses
came together to
network at the
beautiful Old
Alresford Place in
May and enjoyed the
first Pimms of the year!
Old Alresford Place is
set in the picturesque
Hampshire village of Old
Alresford just eight miles
from Winchester. The
recently refurbished 18th
century former rectory
oozes period charm and
was the perfect setting
for attendees to take part
in facilitated networking
to make the most out of
their time at the Hampshire
Chamber event.
Attendees enjoyed a
Pimms on the lawn, whilst
late in 1973 when Hampshire County
Council acquired their 15-mile length,
giving the go-ahead for the first
official working party. Surrey County
Council bought the Surrey length for
£40,000 in March 1976.
Their hard work along with the
support from the councils and
community led to what the canal is
today. Now fully managed by the
Basingstoke Canal Authority it allows
the opportunity for all to enjoy canal
trips, canoeing and walks along the
navigation.
Once on board, guests enjoyed
a cream tea whilst chatting to each
other over a cup of coffee before
disembarking at Odiham Castle to
further see the sights of the area.
The trip was a great way to help
businesses meet new contacts, and
help break away from the traditional
networking event mould. Many thanks
Networking at Old Alresford Place
getting the opportunity
to practice their elevator
pitch and swap business
cards to strengthen their
connections. Guests
then made their way into
the dining room which
worked well for round
table networking, helping
businesses showcase the
services they can offer
and raise the profile of
their organisation.
Bryan Griffiths,
Chairman of TM clothing
said: "I thought that the
networking event at Old
Alresford Place was one of
the better events that I have
attended, good venue and
parking, that helps a lot.
"The lunch was excellent
and I thought that the
musical chairs theme
to all the volunteers at the Basingstoke
Canal Society for making the event
happen, and also our photographer
Mike Dewey from Insight 360 for his
support.
worked well. It was good for
my company and we made
some new connections."
After a delicious two
course lunch provided
by Cresson Creative,
Steve Gates, Chair of
the Winchester Area
Committee closed the event
and thanked the venue for
hosting such a successful
Chamber meeting.
local boat company Nauti Powerboats
and Yachts Ltd to recommend
proposals for maritime support
systems serving offshore wind farms.
They were presented with a
trophy and £500 prize having been
nominated by Nauti owner Paul
Duffield who commented: “The team
excelled themselves by demonstrating
eagerness to take on an area that
was difficult and unfamiliar to them.
They produced first‐class research
and presentations, and the project
is leading to massive savings for our
clients and to additional productivity
in the offshore wind industry. We also
will be saving thousands of tonnes
of CO2 emissions from the support
vessels and increasing green energy
production from the turbines.”
PayFlow pours into thriving business hub
A company which specialises in payroll and back‐office finance for
recruitment agencies across Britain is the latest firm to sign up to
a thriving business centre in Southampton.
Warm welcome: Rob Greenberg of Hampshire Chamber member Ocean Village Innovation Centre in
Southampton, where occupancy is a record 95%, with 39 businesses on site. One of the latest occupiers is
PayFlow, a company which specialises in payroll and back‐office finance for recruitment agencies across Britain.
In today’s super‐connected
world, consumers are becoming
more discerning and demanding
in the way they interact
with businesses.
Merchants are chasing the holy grail
of omni‐channel; providing a seamless
customer experience is paramount.
Individuals are more aware of the
need to protect their personal
information.
SLPay was developed in
collaboration with NetPay following
an increase in enquiries from Silver
Lining customers looking to include
merchant services in their fully
managed service packages. Silver
Lining’s full service wrap now includes
IT, telephony and merchant services.
Carl Churchill, Managing Director
at NetPay, said, “We’re excited to be
working with Silver Lining, enabling
them to offer a full call centre service
to customers, helping businesses
reduce their costs by offering a whole
host of call centre solutions including
the ability to take card payments and
PCI compliance from one supplier.
“Payment security is so important
for customers; Silver Lining’s research
has shown that only 1% of consumers
in 2013 felt that payments over
the phone to a call centre are the
most secure method. Silver Lining’s
solutions are PCI DSS compliant,
which coupled with our Tier 1 PCI DSS
compliant gateway, makes SLPay one
of the most secure solutions in the
industry,” concludes Churchill.
To support businesses, Silver
Lining seeks to provide the
very best in business IT and
telecommunication solutions. Working
with the best products and services
to accommodate each individual
business’s telecommunications
PayFlow, founded by managing
director Stuart Edwards six years ago,
has moved into a 580 sq ft office at
Ocean Village Innovation Centre, a
Hampshire Chamber member.
With 67 serviced offices, the
centre is occupied by start‐ups and
high‐growth companies requiring
flexible space on easy‐in, easy‐out terms.
There are 39 businesses on site,
with 32 virtual office customers. With
PayFlow's arrival, occupancy is now
a record 95%.
PayFlow, which has four staff,
has a £5m turnover, paying 200
temporary workers every week on
behalf of a number of recruitment
agencies across the UK.
Rob Greenberg, centre manager,
said: "With PayFlow's arrival,
occupancy here is now a record 95%.
Based on the entrepreneurial make‐up
of many of our occupiers, there is a
clear trend towards larger companies
turning to agile outsourcers like
PayFlow to provide non‐core work in
the service sector economy.
"Similarly, we free up occupiers to
focus on their commercial strengths
because we look after their offices,
reception calls and mail."
Silver Lining partners with NetPay Merchant Services
and IT requirements, Silver Lining
offers tailor‐made solutions which
incorporate merchant services,
connectivity, telephone systems,
inbound call control, IT infrastructure,
smart TVs, PCI compliance, Wi‐Fi,
business mobiles and more.
Allan Packer, Managing Director
Silver Lining, says: “We place great
emphasis on understanding our
customers’ needs and delivering
strong customer service. We
believe that only by listening to
and understanding our customers’
communication and data
requirements can we offer the right
bespoke solution. We’ve a firm belief
that the people doing the work and
the relationships they have with clients
are integral; it is this people‐focused
approach which makes us stand apart
from other business telecoms and
data service providers.”
Forgetting about the rain
How secure is your
company’s information?
Organisations of all sizes are aware of the potential of losing
information and data with headline stories about Ashley Madison,
T‐Mobile and Government regularly seen on news‐stands over
the past few years. What isn’t as widely known is that these
headline grabbing occurrences only account for 4% of data or
information leaks, but they do sell papers. It is also a little
known fact that 97% of leaks or loses are avoidable.
Condor Office Solutions hosted an Information Security breakfast briefing, at
their Chandler's Ford offices, highlighting some of the stories and what can be
done to address the potential of losing information. The briefing, which was
attended by over 20 local businesses, was led by Quentyn Taylor, a respected
industry expert and titled “Chasing Rainbows. Forgetting about the rain”.
The message was that businesses should focus on the 97% of leaks or losses
that are easily avoidable and keeping dry and not chasing the rainbow of
being 100% secure against potential losses which is the pot of gold at the end
of the rainbow.
“Condor organised an excellent event about information security that was
very well delivered. A few hours well spent for any business.” Robert Wassall,
Managing Director Datahelp.
“ As long standing customers of Condor the breakfast briefing provided
a fresh insight into how Condor can help secure and protect membership
and Chamber information in addition to delivering cost effective copying
and printing.” Lorraine Gourley, Financial Controller Hampshire Chamber
of Commerce.
Tenants granted right to
request
energy‐saving
improvements
Tenants across the UK now
have the right to ask their
landlords for consent to
make energy‐saving home
improvements.
New legislation came into effect on
1st April that means those letting
out a property will not be able to
refuse eco‐friendly projects providing
tenants can prove the work can be
completed at no cost to the landlord.
Carole Charge, technical and
compliance director at Leaders, says:
“The new ruling is excellent news as
it can have a positive impact on both
landlords and tenants, not to mention
the environment.
“Tenants now have a viable way
to drive down their energy bills by
making homes more efficient, while
landlords will benefit from happier
tenants and a more energy‐friendly
property in the long run.
“It also allows us to help our
landlords make the most of the
new legislation, as we will deal with
all requests from tenants living in
properties we manage. We will also
ensure our landlords take advantage
of any available government funding
schemes they may be eligible for.”
A recent survey by the National
Landlords Association (NLA) found
35 per cent of tenants said they
consider the energy efficiency of a
property before deciding on where
to live. As such, a greener home can
be easier to let and could achieve
a higher rent.
Carole adds: “A comfortable
property that generates lower fuel
bills is likely to be more attractive to
tenants. People may also be keener to
stay in such a home for longer, which
in turn will reduce void periods.
“Our advice to landlords is to be
open to the idea of all energy‐saving
projects, particularly as many can be
completed with only a minor upfront
cost.”
acknowledged by National Express for not only one, but
two awards.
“We strive for excellence in all areas of the business
IBM’s design thinking habit
IBM has made the difficult transition of adopting design at the
core of its business. Other large corporates attempting this often
overlook essential nuances of design. However, IBM’s relentless
desire to reinvent itself has come to understand these nuances:
• To accurately define the problem,
before finding the solution.
• How to communicate a design, not
only create it.
• Knowing what to leave out rather
than what to put in.
This level of understanding is driven
by the high calibre of designers
Employers, staff and students
have come together at the
annual Coaching and Innovation
Symposium to explore innovative
coaching projects created
by Southampton Solent
University sports students.
Now in its fifth year, the event
celebrates the achievements of the
University’s Coaching Innovation
Programme (CIP), which encourages
sports students to develop their own
coaching projects to improve lives
and address social issues within the
wider community.
"The symposium continues to
grow every year, demonstrating the
impact the Coaching Innovation
that IBM Design has recruited. The
global design team have defined,
and continue to define, a distinct
set of practices and tools that lead
IBM Design Thinking. This common
language is now at the core of
IBM’s approach to problem solving,
allowing those in a company the size
Student sporting projects
set to innovate the city
Programme has on reaching out to
community and industry needs,"
says Kevin Harris, Course Leader,
BA (Hons) Sport Coaching and
Development.
Through the programme, students
develop their own innovative project
using sport, coaching or physical
activity to engage communities,
improve lives and address social
issues.
To date, students have already
delivered over 100 projects through
the CIP, engaging with over 1,800
participants, helping local schools,
hard to-reach groups, the elderly
population, sports clubs and youth
groups.
One project, called Cricket in the
Community, aims to tackle the lack of
of Luxembourg to clearly understand
each other. The success of this is
evident in many of our products,
including Blue Mix, Verse and Watson
Engagement Advisor.
As with all change, the journey
to this point was challenging.
However, the debate we’ve had as an
organization, between ourselves, the
industry and market has determined
that we now take nothing at face
value. We have asked why of the
human-centred design processes
and techniques, adapting and
optimizing our approach to solve
unique problems with seemingly
sci-fi technology.
It is between this creative tension
that you find innovation and progress.
Eloquently stated by Irish playwright
George Bernard Shaw:
"The reasonable man adapts
himself to the world: the unreasonable
one persists in trying to adapt
the world to himself. Therefore
all progress depends on the
unreasonable man."
This habit we have developed to
constantly question and adapt our
approach is allowing us to design
industry-leading experiences for
industry leading technology.
black ethnic minorities participating in
cricket within the Southampton area.
Visitors to the symposium had the
opportunity to meet with students,
discuss their projects and network
with like-minded professionals and
community representatives.
Solent business experts
quizzed by
Southampton
students about
responsible
business
Students from Southampton quizzed a
panel of business experts in a discussion
about good business practices as part of
Responsible Business Week.
Students from Woodlands Community College
devised a series of questions which they put
to the panel, which included representatives
from The Southern Co‐operative, Southampton
Solent University, Colas and Menzies LLP
at the event organised by Business in the
Community (BITC).
Gemma Lacey, Director of Sustainability and
Communications for The Southern Co‐operative,
who took part in the panel said: “It was great
to be part of today’s discussion, although it did
include answering some pretty tough questions!
The students showed a real understanding and
interest in responsible business and I think its
future will be in safe hands with them”.
The discussion, which was hosted by
Woodlands Community College, was designed
to provide students with examples of good
business which they can use for their studies,
whilst inspiring and motivating them to become
the responsible business people of the future.
Invited were members of BITC’s Solent
Business Class Cluster, a group of schools and
businesses who work together to ensure that
young people attending local schools achieve
their best possible outcomes and leave ready
to build successful working lives.
The questions covered issues such as the
minimum wage, EU referendum, apprenticeships
and what transferable skills are needed to work
in business.
Jessica Jeffery, a year 10 student from
Woodlands Community College said “It was
interesting hearing about how the different
businesses are trying to be more responsible,
and it was really useful to learn about local
companies and the skills they look for when
recruiting.”
Responsible Business Week is a national
event where businesses and organisations share
and discuss the many ways that they can work
together to build a fairer society and a more
sustainable future.
This means a simple visit to the
dentist holds wider benefits than just
looking after your teeth so should be
an integral part of any plans when
considering how to maintain a healthy
workforce.
Colin Perry, Corporate Channel
Manager at Denplan explains:
“Denplan believes that prevention is
better than cure and we continually
seek to raise awareness of the
importance of good oral health.
If looking after your employees to ensure you
attract and retain the best talent is important to
your business, then looking after their health and
wellbeing will be high on your agenda.
Prevention isn’t just about tooth
decay and gum disease as we see
more and more research showing
links between oral health and general
wellbeing. Unlike other medical
professionals, dentists and dental
nurses see ‘healthy’ patients every
day. This gives them the opportunity
to highlight the importance of
prevention to reduce the risk of any
longer‐term problems later on in life.”
A dental benefit not only supports
the general wellbeing of employees
and their families but also gives them
access to a benefit that can be utilised
on a regular basis. Providing easy
access to preventive dental treatment
and oral health advice should also
encourage your employees to take
more responsibility for their oral
health, which in turn should positively
influence their overall health and
wellbeing.
Boost for Trethowans’
corporate and commercial team
in Southampton
Trethowans has expanded its corporate and
commercial team in Southampton to eleven
lawyers with two new appointments.
Tori Lewis, who specialises
in both corporate and
commercial law, has joined
as a solicitor and will be
based in the Southampton
office in Hedge End. Tori
undertook her training
with a regional law firm
and has worked in both
Southampton and London.
On Thursday 7th April the University of Portsmouth Faculty
of Creative and Cultural Industries hosted the launch of the
Creative Network South and Creative United business advice and
access to finance service.
Nearly 80 individuals attended the
evening which saw presentations
from the University of Portsmouth,
Hampshire Chamber of Commerce,
New Theatre Royal and Creative
United.
The aim of the event was to raise
awareness of a new initiative aimed
at providing access to business
mentoring and finance for creative
industry companies which are based
in the Solent region.
The evening opened with a
welcome from Peter Hooley, Project
Director of Innovation Space,
who spoke about the University's
commitment to supporting its
students, graduates and the local
community, in helping promote
start‐ups and small businesses with
the intention of strengthening the
regional economy.
Gerrard Tin has also
joined the corporate and
commercial team as a
paralegal, specialising
in banking. Gerrard has
particular experience in
drafting facility letters,
putting in place security
structures and drafting
subordination and
priority agreements.
Mike Watson, head of
Trethowans’ corporate and
commercial team, said: “This
is an exciting time of growth
for the firm as a whole and
we are delighted to welcome
both Tori and Gerrard on
board. Our corporate and
commercial team has gone
from strength to strength
and we are looking forward
to them playing a part in
its future.”
Stewart Dunn, Chief Executive of
Hampshire Chamber of Commerce,
championed the Solent as one of
the fastest growing regions for
creative industry businesses and
talked about how its location near
to London and mainland Europe can
be part of its strength in developing
the area for success in the creative
economy.
The evening then saw Laura
Doye, Producer for the Creative Lab
at New Theatre Royal, demonstrate
the success of creative industries
meeting commercial businesses
to form new and exciting projects.
The audience saw a video where a
local 'hoofer' or tap dancer, worked
to promote the launch of a new car
range, helping emphasise her point of
the opportunities for the two groups
to collaborate.
Tori Lewis (left) and Gerrard Tin (right)
Launch event for creative industry
businesses a big success
The final presentation of the
evening was delivered by Sarah
Thirtle, Head of Business Lending
Programmes at Creative United,
who talked through the initiative
and how local creative businesses
can access the support available.
The programme aims to increase
access to finance and improve the
business skills and commercial
acumen of participants to help
develop successful and sustainable
businesses.
Following the presentations,
attendees were able to talk with
business advisors from Creative
United, network with local businesses
and arts organisations, and take part
in tours of the facilities that students
are able to use during their studies.
business advice and access to finance
available, you can view the Creative
University’s Conference Centre team
nominated for
two national awards
Southampton Solent University’s Conference and Events
team have received two nominations for the International
Conference Awards this summer.
The team has been recognised in two categories: Best Conference Venue
Customer Service and the Innovation Award for their work on the launch of
stunningly refurbished catering outlet, The Artisan, located in Southampton’s
Cultural Quarter.
The team are up against tough competition from the Emirates Stadium,
Pullman at St Pancras, Marriott Hotels and the London Evening Standard.
The Conference Awards have gained the respect and backing of the industry
and have become a recognised benchmark of achievement within the hospitality
industry.
The University’s Deputy Director of Estates & Services, Bryan Carroll says:
“This is excellent news for the team, and the nominations are richly deserved.
It comes at an exciting time as the team prepare a launch campaign ahead of
moving into state‐of‐the‐art conference centre facilities within the University’s
new Spark Building.
“The new facilities will enable the team to host larger and more dynamic
events for both internal and external clients,” he added.
Co‐working
space
celebrates
first birthday
The way people like to work
is changing. There are growing
numbers of self‐employed and
remote workers, moving away
from the traditional model
of working 9 to 5 in one
location. It was a Radio 4 show
on the subject that inspired
Lucy Futter to set up The
Workstead in early 2015.
“I grew up in Winchester and I
know there is a vibrant freelance
community, with plenty of families
working flexibly to fit with childcare
arrangements,” she says. “But if you
work at home, or even in a coffee
shop, you can miss out on social
interaction. I opened The Workstead
to fit that niche. It provides affordable
working spaces – a desk, fast Wi‐Fi,
tea and coffee, free parking –
whenever people need it, whether
that’s five days a week or occasional
visits.”
In its first year of business The
Workstead has also hosted a number
of events, including Co‐Working
Women sessions and workshops
on topics from Simple SEO to
Demystifying Tax.
At celebration drinks, Lucy
reflected on the successes and
challenges of the first year:
“Explaining what co‐working is can
be a hard task. But when people
come and see the business, they
get it really quickly. It has been very
rewarding to see the community here
build and evolve. I’m looking forward
to celebrating more milestones.”
The Workstead in
Kingsworthy offers flexible working
spaces, networking opportunities
and business workshops.
Moore Stephens South scoops
Employer of
the Year award
Moore Stephens South, a top ten accountancy firm
with offices based across the south coast, was short
listed for two awards ‐ for Training and Development
and Employer of the Year ‐ at this years' Observer
& Gazette Business Awards, sponsored by the
University of Chichester.
Not only was the firm short listed for two awards, meaning it
positioned in the top three for the categories, but Moore Stephens
South were overall winners of the Employer of the Year award,
categorised as: 'An award for a business that has great staff relations,
good staff retention, with excellent training and who cares for their
employees. The best company to work for!'
The Observer & Gazette Business Awards, organised by
Johnston Press, are now in their 8th year and celebrate local
business excellence. The awards are dedicated to recognising,
rewarding and celebrating local businesses. Encompassing any size
business, providing them with opportunities to grow and develop in a
range of areas.
The firm is delighted with the outcome and looks forward to
attending such a well turned out event next year. The team is ecstatic
with the result and thrilled that, as winners of the award, they are
automatically nominated for the Johnston Press South Business
Awards 2016.
Get Inspired Southampton 2016
Our schools and the business
community at large are on
a determined path to raise
awareness and understanding
of the outstanding career
and work opportunities that
exist within the great firms in
Southampton and the travel
to work area. We are a city that
is open for business and we
want everyone to know it.
Key to our future prosperity are
our young people and the skills
and capabilities that they possess.
Equally important is their inspiration
and belief that the city offers career
opportunities that rival those
anywhere in the UK and which they
can expect to exploit.
As a collective, we have yet again
organised what will be another truly
inspirational career oriented event.
Kevin Appleby, Concert Hall Manager of the
University of Southampton’s Turner Sims
has been appointed the new Chair of the British
Association of Concert Halls (BACH).
Get Inspired Southampton will take
place at O2 Guildhall, Southampton
on SATURDAY 15th OCTOBER 2016.
The event is aimed at our 10 to 16
year old students and their families.
We want the students – and their
parents and even grandparents ‐ to
get a real understanding of the broad
and exciting career paths that the
diverse businesses in and around our
city have to offer. We will inspire the
students and their families about local
firms and employment. We’ll excite
them and make them keen to learn
more.
To guarantee success we will
include up to 100 local businesses,
training providers and colleges to
actively participate at the event.
Each exhibitor is required to bring
an interactive demonstration to
showcase their work to these young
people. We plan to influence at least
2,000 attendees on the day.
The event is not a careers fair, but an
Southampton concert hall manager to head up
prestigious national organisation
It’s been announced he
will take up the position
following the retirement of
the previous Chair, Andrew
Jowett, of Symphony Hall,
Birmingham. Matthew
Sims, Head of Arts, Events
and Venues at Leeds
City Council, becomes
Vice‐Chair.
Kevin, who will continue
in his role at Turner Sims,
says: "I’m delighted and
honoured to become
Chair of the British
Association of Concert
Halls. My predecessor
did a great job, steering
the organisation capably
through the last two
decades.
"The Association is now
a strong group, and while
concert halls are currently
operating in a challenging
environment, the
contribution they make to
British cultural life is vital.
Every concert hall has a
huge impact on its location
and enables arts activity to
happen there which would
otherwise not take place.
I look forward to leading
the organisation in these
exciting times."
BACH is the national
body representing venues
with a significant classical
exciting, fun, interactive event that
showcases the work of employers in
the city and some of the wide range
of career opportunities that exist.
It will be a good day out for families
and a celebration of the businesses
in the city.
It will be a day that inspires people
to consider areas of work they may
never have thought of, and which
helps them to understand how they
might get there.
If you wish to be involved with
this exciting event with an interactive
