The journey from the horse-drawn stage coach to the “horseless carriages” has been fast and short. And Cars have become icons of personal freedom. Car designing has taken an entirely new trend that challenges
human imagination and building a Kart is the starting point for budding car enthusiasts. With an ideology of encouraging the inherent aspirations of the automobile engineers-to-be SHRI VISHNU ENGINEERING COLLEGE
2016 A wonderful night at the open air
auditorium BVRIT.
It's something I really can't stand.
And yet, it's inevitable.
And it's happening here @ THE HOSTEL
DAY CELEBRATIONS.
All of a sudden the anchors on the stage
started the countdown and the team has
announced 'THE BIRTHDAY OF OUR
CHAIRMAN SIR'. All ran towards the stage
for the moment which included cake
cutting ceremony along with the
participation of students and the Faculty.
It was a memorable moment for me as I
got the opportunity to lit the candle and
cut the cake!
Being a part of the team of organizers for
hostel day celebrations 2016, it was a
chance for me in fact all the BVRITians to
express warm and hearty greetings to our
beloved chairman sir Sri K.V Vishnu Raju
garu on the occasion of his 52nd Birthday.
Sri. K.V. Vishnu Raju carries the torch of
vision of his grandfather. He believes that
it is inactivity and not activity that wears
down the body and spirit. Vishnu sir is
known for his leadership acumen
especially for his motivational speeches
Prasanna : Eminent persons are all people who have realized their dreams.
What was your dream when you were young?
Vice Chancellor: I started my profession in Civil Engineering. My
dream was to become a Vice Chancellor, to realize this dream I
had to have a plan of action and it is important to implement it.
What is required to become a Vice Chancellor? Good Education
and Research. I made sincere attempts to reach my goal. I
pursued my B.Tech, M.Tech, Ph.D, and Post Doc. without any
gap, I indulged in research and I have many publications and
presentations. . I was also very clear about how to achieve my
goal. Reaching one's goal is not an easy task. There will be many
deviations in between. I too faced many hindrances. But I was
clear. If there was a problem, I would attend to it ,do what was
required and again focus on my task . I may have lost time, but I
kept moving quietly in the direction that I ought to move. . In
addition to qualification, experience and determination, sincerity
is also a must. If you operate sincerely, you can more effectively
direct your future. It is because of that, I achieved my goal within
the shortest possible time. If we have high determination and
sincere resolution we can achieve our goals.
Prasanna: Who inspired you to pursue your dream?
Vice Chancellor: Basically, my father was also a professor. He
inspired me to become a professor.
Prasanna: What is on your bookshelf?
Vice Chancellor: Oh, many! Reading is my passion. I simply love
reading books. I am a voracious reader and I read the books of
several authors. When I go to a bookshop, I do not buy only one
book of an author. In fact, I book the entire series of that author.
You can see thousands of books in my library. But I am very
particular in maintaining all the books. To keep track of these
books, I follow the numbering system; I give numbers to the
books just as they do in professional libraries. In addition to
reading, I also share my books with others. I also make it a point
that the book is returned to me, in this way I can share my books
with several people. Even today books remain the highest
delight. They take us to unknown lands and enrich our lives. I feel
that the greatest gift that can be given to a bibliophile is a book.
They can be read and shared as well. Books are to be read, books
are to be preserved and books are to be shared.
Prasanna: How do you manage your personal life as well as you
professional life?
Vice Chancellor: It's very simple. I just learnt it from different
people. We have to identify different young people like you. We
have to assign them the job and monitor the work as a leader. A
leader should be able to plan and delegate work effectively. The
right work given to the right person, at the right time will lead to
successful completion of all tasks. Then there would be plenty of
time to spend with the family. If I were to do everything on my
own, 24 hours will not be sufficient. I just identify the right
people and assign them the job. Delegation, proper monitoring
and effective time management is the secret.
Prasanna: On what quote do you live by?
Vice Chancellor: Tomorrow's problems cannot be solved with a
little knowledge or only today's knowledge. All the time we have
to go with new technologies. When you are doing one thing, we
have to adopt new technology. For example, when a computer
system comes, you have to learn it. If you say, “No. I will just go
with the regular paper reading, hard copy”, you cannot be in the
swim. You become outdated, obsolete. All the time you have to
move along with technology and you have to optimize the system.
It is essential to keep abreast of the changing trends. Updating
oneself with technology gives a person a sharper edge in this
competitive world. Web media, print books and magazines,
social media, training face to face or online, are all ways to
update oneself. As the days, months and years go by; technology
just gets better and better. What was once the latest and greatest
yesterday, is an old hat today. The bottom line is, technology
doesn't wait for you and we need to harness the latest
technology.
Prasanna: As a new Vice-Chancellor of JNTUK, what are your plans?
Vice Chancellor: Well, with the continuous changes in the
requirements of the society, it is necessary that we grow
continuously and adopt latest content and teaching
methodologies. With my experience, I plan to put this JNTU
Kakinada University on par with the other technological
universities which are doing very well not only in India but also in
the world. I will advise colleges to follow the best practices
adopted by educational institutions like Sri Vishnu Engineering
College. If possible, I would request the heads of such colleges to
take the initiative and introduce such practices in the
government engineering colleges.
Prasanna: Do you have any suggestions to the students?
Vice Chancellor: All the time students should go with new
innovative areas. They should work hard. They should make use
of laboratory facilities. You cannot learn the entire subject only
through classroom teaching. You have to complement it by
referring books in the library, by observation of the society, and
by doing everything that can give practical experience. I, as a
person, did not have any practical experience. No student should
lag in this aspect. The thrust should be on holistic education.
Prasanna: Thank you Sir.
LEADER SPEAK
Mr Ganesh Subramanian,
Founder and CEO, Stylumia
A QUARTERLY NEWS PUBLICATION FROM SRI VISHNU EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY
Mr. Ganesh Subramanian is the Founder & CEO of Stylumia Intelligence Technology Private Limited. The company's mission is to enable
fashion and lifestyle Brands, Retailers and Producers all over the world, provide customer-right products at the right time, at the right
place and at the right price, using deep technology. He has over 20 years of rich and diverse experience in the retail and fashion industry
where he created many powerful private brands and established a wide selection of brand partnerships. He worked as Chief
Merchandising Officer, Chief Operating Officer and as Head (New Initiatives) between April, 2015 and October, 2015 before starting his
own company Stylumia in October, 2015. He served as the Vice President of Softlines (Fashion, Footwear and Accessories) business of
the Bharti - Walmart joint venture where he helped establish and reposition fashion in the hypermarket business. He has earlier played a
key role in the making of Reliance Trends as its Asst. Vice President - Apparel and was also instrumental in the launch of super premium
brand Tommy Hilfiger (an Arvind Brands joint venture) in India during his tenure as their Head of Operations.
Could you please tell us about your journey from a student at
Institute of Supply Management, USA to Founder & CEO,
Stylumia?
Early part of my career, after college, was about having a good
brand name behind me and a good company, so I joined Coats
India as management trainee. My First job was fiber to thread,
second was thread to fabric (Manifattura di valle Brembana, an
Indo-Italian joint venture) to establish a European quality
fabric from India serving international brands like Hugo Boss,
PVH etc. Then I started to design my career going closer to
consumer. I loved serving consumers. Then I moved from hard
core textiles to branded apparel business through Indus
League, Arvind and Tommy Hilfiger. My first move into retail
was with Reliance Trends. Seeing the challenges in Indian
retail scaling, Walmart came as a huge opportunity, which
helped me learn scaling any business. While thinking of
starting something on my own in e-commerce , when it was
just picking up in 2012, I met the founder of Myntra, we saw a
connect and I joined Myntra. Last four years have been a great
learning period at supersonic speed particularly being part of
Myntra scaling from 20 million USD run rate to 500 million USD
run rate when I left.
Experience at Myntra gave me an insight on how technology
helps scale business and solve real life problems. Having been
in fashion business for a long period, I never thought
technology could be used to drive key decisions. With
developments in deep learning, computer vision and Artificial
Intelligence, I wanted to contribute to key decision making in
fashion business. That's how Stylumia was born.
What made you choose fashion and marketing after doing a
Bachelor's course in Technology?
My passion to serve consumers and I always saw a great
opportunity, learning and growth there.
What is Disruptive innovation? Kindly let us know the
disruptive innovation in Fashion Industry and especially @
Myntra ?
Disruptive innovation is about breaking the rules of the game or
create new rules and create an all new opportunity. When I
joined Myntra, people used to ask me “who would buy fashion
online?, fashion is a touch and feel business, books are fine, but
not fashion”. With sheer focus, consumer centricity and
innovation, Myntra today is one of the leading fashion retailers
in the country with even International brands launching first
through Myntra.
Throw some light on AI-led fashion intelligence platform
initiated by your Stylumia Intelligence Technology Pvt Ltd ?
Fashion business is one of the most challenging businesses to
operate. Long lead times and short product life cycles
compound the complexity of the business. Many decisions are
made for the future and the current with minimal available data
and a fair amount of judgement.
Having worked in the trenches for many years in the industry,
we started out by asking this question: can machines jump in
here with more reliable, data-driven and actionable
suggestions to help design professionals and consumers alike,
in real-time?
The answer to this is what we are chasing at Stylumia. We are
applying the advances in AI and computer vision to model,
analyse and derive actionable intelligence from the
unstructured data sources. The intelligence of our models
would be derived from data sources like images, user behavior
data, textual descriptions on social media or implicit signals to
be mined from the retail sites: by using machine learning
approaches.
Having chosen this direction, we are out to enable the fashion
and lifestyle professionals across the globe in making laser
edge informed decisions for current course corrections and
future directions.
Where do you see Stylumia in the next five years?
We see Stylumia becoming the go to solution provider for every
fashion professional in the world. We would have moved from
reactive to in-line, to predictive. If I may say so “Bloomberg of
Fashion”.
One of the key characteristic of your marvelous career is
leadership. What traits must a leader possess in the 21st
century organizations?
Leader is one, who learns constantly. He believes in people and
creates leaders and he himself goes to the background.
Communication is a very important trait. Humility helps him to
be a learner always.
During graduation, a lot of students aspire to be
entrepreneurs. What qualities according to you are must for
a good entrepreneur?
Ambition, Passion and necessary Skills for what one wants to
do. You are your ambition!
In the present day scenario, Innovation is the key to success
for any company. What's your take on this?
Keep asking why? 3,5,7 times till you get stuck. Innovation
follows.
What do you think of the popular opinion that hard work isn't
enough to rise up the ranks?
Hard work with smartness takes you forward faster. You are as
smart as your knowledge and application.
What advice do you give for students aspiring to be future
trailblazers in Fashion Industry and other related fields?
Keep learning every day, every day is day one. Read a lot!
You must have faced many challenges in your professional
life. What was the toughest one? How could you overcome?
I always moved to jobs which I was not aware of (not
experienced in). I call this as “zero knowledge advantage”. This
is a challenge too. The way I managed it is to approach any role
from first principles. I always asked “what is the best in the
world?” and “what could be next?”
We've seen a video in YouTube which was titled "Ganesh
Subramanian farewell video @ Myntra” where people
describe you as a colleague more than a boss. How do you
manage to bring the best out in each individual?
Respect everyone, treat your colleagues as friends and support
them in times of need. Challenge them enough for them to
learn. Help them become better persons.
Do you think Indian fashion has influence over the Western
world?
Yes, many luxury brands of the world take inspiration from
India.
Where you draw your inspiration from?
I am fan of Nature. Most of my inspiration comes from reading.
What is your Philosophy of life? Any Favorite quotes?
Life is finite. What is the biggest size of problem that you want
to take in this finite life and solve? There is no past, no future,
there is only this moment. Be alive, take action, you will keep
moving forward. Take risks, not taking them would be the
biggest risk.

ISSUE 11 APRIL 2016
SUCCESS
FACTOR
The success factor for one's professional & personal life
is to reduce the amount of time and positive attitude
that takes you to achieve your goals. If one thinks
positively will be optimistic and confident. People must
be engaged in the activities that make them perfect in
that particular work they learn or do. Only then they can
provide the best and get success in life.
The steps to reach one's goal
Set a Goal Work hard
Believe in self Think Positive
Be Confident
My opinion
There flies a kite,
Roves the sky with all delight.
Spreads its wings deep into the sky,
Gazing the earth from very high.
Away from the world,
Away from the brawl.
Deliberating from a height,
To get the things right.
Aiming the horizon, it dashed through the skies.
One must have dreamt of flying,
Given the wings would think themselves free in the space,
feeling the free spirit.
Mind thou, the deed of flight,
Is indeed a norm of plight.
Stuck in the plays of wind,
Swirling, whirling as the invincible twirls of fate.
Even the king of flight should fight to keep it high,
Not to collide or crash down to meet its end,
Sometimes it gets to rest somewhere to carry on its errand.
It is designed to cover the sky whereas we to cover the earth,
Posed with the similar challenges right from the birth.
5
If the God listens to your prayer, he will expand your faith.
If the God delays, it means he is testing your patience. If
he denies, he will give something better for you.
Career Advice
1. College doesn't only prepare you for a job but it's also a
preparation for life. College will open doors of opportunities. But
remember, your destination is yours to choose.
2. Life in the real world is different from being a student. Challenges
are inevitable. However, if you focus on your strengths and use
your weaknesses to improve yourself, nothing will be impossible to
a determined person.
Rise
3. You need to have technical skills for the job if you want to be able
to move up and master your craft. And you also should have
communication skills along with technical skills.
SVECW Girls at BAJA SAE INDIA 2016
The 9th BAJA 2016 competition was remarkable for yet another
historic event. It dispelled the general notion that mechanical
or automobile branches of engineering are meant for boys only
and girls show less interest. Flabbergasting all the
assumptions, a team of women mechanical engineers
representing Shri Vishnu Engineering College for women,
Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh, made their debut into the
competition BAJA 2016. They have cleared the virtual round and
are getting ready for the next rounds to challenge supremacy
of boys in this field and proclaim to the world the capabilities
of womenfolk of south India. It is the first women team
representing South India ever since the beginning of BAJA
competitions, can uplift the spirits of many women engineers.
Creation of industry ready skilled engineers is a prerequisite
to achieve the targets that have been set forth in the
Automotive Mission Plan of 2016 for India. BAJA is one such
initiative from SAE INDIA (Society of Automotive Engineers)
that provides an opportunity for students to get hands on
learning experience in vehicle design. The rapid increase in
the number of teams from SAEINDIA clubs and colleges across
the country and the unparalleled enthusiasm of everyone
involved with this event is clear evidence that BAJA SAEINDIA
is making progress in the right direction. The event stands as
a test for the fusion of intellectual potentialities and
corporeal capabilities of contestants.
Motorsports in India have been gaining enormous significance
in the past few years. In view of this, Baja SAE has gained
significant popularity amongst students in India recently. To
meet Technology Road Map of India's vision, we need lots of
good engineers. These Human Resources can be multiplied by
encouraging women to enter into engineering. Baja is one such
initiative, where Science, Technology, Engineering &
Mathematics are synthesized.
The project fuels the exuberance of the youth, by providing
teams with a platform to test their mettle, giving them a
pragmatic exposure to real world challenges as faced in the
industry. Students realize their talent through such an
experience, making them deserving candidates for the future
as technocrats, entrepreneurs, designers, innovators and
leaders. This helps the objective of bringing out student
talent to serve the nation for the years to come, in fulfillment
of the Automotive Mission Plan a dream to make India an
International Automotive Hub.
Last year over 100 engineering students were placed in
different automobile companies like General Motors, Mahindra
and Mahindra, John Deere, Cummins India, ARAI and SAE. These
companies offer annual salaries in between 3 lakh to 8 lakh.
Due to practical knowledge and hands on experience, these
students perform better than any other post graduate
engineering students.
Let the youth be
reinforced to
transform the
nation

The Genesis
The BAJA SAE Competition originated at the
University of South Carolina in 1976,
under the supervision of Dr. J. F.
Stevens. Since then, the competition has
grown to become a premier engineering
design series for university teams. The
series consists of seven competitions, of
these, three competitions are held in
North America under the sponsorship of
SAE. The Indian competition is about 9
years old, and growing in popularity, as
well as in the number of colleges and
students participating every year. It is
an annual competition conducted by Baja
across the US and around the world
including India, Brazil, South Africa and
Korea.
BAJA SAE INDIA is an inter-collegiate
design competition for undergraduate
engineering students. It challenges and
pushes the participating students and
colleges to simulate real-world
engineering design projects and their
related challenges. It pools undergraduate
students of mechanical and automobile
engineering across the country to design
and manufacture an all-terrain vehicle on
their own and compete with one another on
the arduous track at Pithampur, Madhya
Pradesh. The competition started in India
in December 2007 at Pithampur, near Indore
(M.P.).
BAJA SAE INDIA is conducted at NATRAX –
National Automobile Test Tracks, NATRIP in
Pithampur where a specially designed four
kilometer track, puts to tests the vehicle
designs of the participating students. The
objective of the competition is to design
and build a rugged single seat,
recreational four-wheel off-road vehicle.
Teams compete to have their design
accepted for manufacture by a fictitious
firm. Students must function as a team not
only to design, build, test, promote and
race a vehicle within the limits of the
rules, but also to generate financial
support for the project, as well as manage
their academic priorities at their
respective colleges.
THE JOURNEY
OF ZIBA RACERS
Armed with will power, a team of 14 girl students from Shri Vishnu Engineering
College for Women competed with 395 teams across the country to CHALLENGE THEIR
CALIBRE. SVECW Women's team 'ZIBA RACERS' were the only girl team from south
India to participate in BAJA and compete with other teams in ENDURANCE test of
their vehicle. Their ideology is evident from the name of the team itself.
'ZIBA' means 'BEAUTY WITH STRENGTH'.
The event was divided into two stages: The first stage was held in July, the
Virtual round, in which about 153 teams were shortlisted on the basis of their
technical design and their knowledge of the design and development stages of
the project.
The second stage was the Main event which was held in February at the National
Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) facility in
Pithampur near Indore, Madhya Pradesh, assessed the durability and drivability
of the actual vehicle, assembled as per the design presented in the virtual
round. It comprised of Static and Dynamic Events.
During Static events, the participating students had to describe in detail the
methods used in designing the car, including all its sub-systems from Chassis
to Steering as well as Engine Power Train to the Safety features.
The Dynamic Events involved dynamic tests such as acceleration, suspension or
traction, hill climbing, maneuverability and many more. Points were awarded
based on the performance of the vehicles. These points were also taken as the
starting order of events for the Endurance Race.
The support from the management in providing tools, equipment, or finance
provided the members of TEAM ZIBA RACERS with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to
test their skills against students from around the world and grow into realtime
engineers.
The motto “you name it ,we have it ” has inspired the SVECW girls to dream more
,learn more , do more and become more.
Let’s Make in India
be a reality,
but not a slogan.

INDUSTRIALIST
Students' Interaction with
Mr. Chetan Kajaria
The prominent industrialist Shri Chetan Kajaria, Joint Managing Director of
M/s Kajaria Ceramics Ltd. had an interactive session with students from the
constituent colleges of Sri Vishnu Educational Society at Shri Vishnu
Engineering College for Women on 15 February 2016.
The session was presided over by the Chairman Shri K.V. Vishnu Raju. In his
welcome address, the chairman briefed the audience about the highly
competitive ceramic industry. He described Kajaria Ceramics as the largest,
the best and the most profitable family based industry which had made a
niche for itself because of its excellent brand image. At the helm was Mr.
Chetan Kajaria, a Petro-chemical engineer, who also holds a Management
degree from Boston College and whose dynamic leadership propels the
company forward. Shri. Chetan Kajaria released alumnus Ms. Puneetha
Srinivas's “Feathered Friends”, a pictorial compilation of birds nesting in the
Bhimavaram Campus. Mr. Kajaria fielded a number of questions posed by
the students pursuing different disciplines. Dr. Usha Ramani, Associate
Professor of English, Mrs. P. Prasanthi, Assistant Professor of English and
Prudhvy Raju Mantena, Assistant Professor from the Department of
Management Studies conducted the session.
Who is your real source of inspiration behind your
entrepreneurial journey?
My father Shri Ashok Kajaria. His vision, wisdom and
guidance motivate and influenced me as well as my brother
Rishi Kajaria to progress in this highly competitive industry.
Further, my education as a Petrochemical engineer and my
MBA from Boston College contribute significantly to my
work.
What are the steps you take to keep in pace with the
highly dynamic external environment?
We at Kajaria focus on retail distribution. Our dealers are our
backbone. Hence, we maintain a strong bond with the
dealership network, produce a wide variety of products to
cater to and win the trust of our customers.
What are the practices that are followed in Kajaria in
order to retain the best talent?
Creating good work atmosphere, cordial relationship and
treating employees as partners.
What is the role of Kajaria in the community
development/ its CSR activities?
Kajaria has constructed schools in Gailpur and Sikandrabad
in UP, building the much needed toilets for women and girls in
villages in Gujarat and thus taking care of hygiene and the
environment.
What's your view on the present industrial environment
in this new state of AP?
Andhra Pradesh is poised for very rapid growth with an
extremely positive industrial environment.
What's your piece of advice for the budding
entrepreneurs like us?
There's no substitute for hard work.
What are the steps that you usually follow in order to
maintain the visibility of your brand in the market?
Grass root level branding, good displays at showrooms,
advertising on TV, hoardings at Airports and cricket grounds
Excluding yours, what's your most admired company?
Asian Paints for its employee centeredness and we try to
adopt some of the best practices.
What are the factors you attribute for your success?
We have a strong marketing team and extensive dealership
network, adapting the latest digital technology that helps
keep in touch with the pulse of the market and delivering
excellent quality of the product to the customers.
Looking back, what's one thing that you would like to do
differently, if given a chance?
No regrets for anything as of now, however I would do
marketing more aggressively.
What according to you are the solid steps taken by the
govt. to make the Indian economy self -sustainable?
I am bullish about India's economy under Prime Minister
Modi's leadership and his call for “Make in India” would
be fruitful.
How would you like your company to be remembered by
the people?
We have won the customers' trust that our products are the
best in the market. Keeping up with that image, we would
like to be remembered as the leader and innovator of the
ceramic industry in India.
What are the steps taken by your organization to make
sure that there is proper work life balance in your
employees and make them emotionally strong?
Punctuality in one's work reduces stress. Further, employees
are given two Saturdays in a month to pursue their interests.
Many foreign products are flooding the Indian markets.
What's your strategy to overcome this competition?
Like the fashion Industry, tile and ceramic industry are driven
by style, colour and pattern. We have 3000+ inventory of
designs for wall, floor and bathroom tiles. We keep abreast of
the latest developments in the European market. The cutting
edge digital technology helps create ground breaking
product profiles, designs and processes.
Especially for products like tiles, distribution network is
very vital. What are the specialties of Kajaria distribution
network?
We have a strong pan- India distribution network, our unique
mega showroom and display centres give the customers a
complete picture of the product to make their choice easy.
How can a company plan about eco-friendly type of raw
materials to be used in present scenario?
Right now majority of the raw materials in tiles are ecofriendly
and we stand by these materials and try to balance
nature.
As more amount of ceramic waste is dumped in the
ceramic industries, in this context what are the measures
you are taking for the reduction of waste?
We have separate places near all our factories for wastage
dumping and moreover, the waste material from tiles are
used as raw materials for many new products and also tiles
waste is used by the aquaculture people for filling their lands.
How is ergonomics being applied in the organization
today?
Our design and development team is in step with the best in
the world to produce the best product in the country. We have
been called the super brand by the customers for the eighth
year in a row. It is all due to the incredible trust of the
customers in our wide range of products.
