Impact Sockets
IMPACT SOCKET SAFETY
Impact sockets are manufactured specifically to work
well and fail safely with impact tools. Impact sockets have
many safety features that are simply not present in hand
sockets, so it is important to use ONLY impact sockets
on an impact tool. Impact sockets protect both the tool
and the mechanic by absorbing much of the punishing
vibration delivered by the anvil of the impact tool.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SOFTNESS
An important safety feature found in an impact socket
is the metal. The alloy is heat-treated to just the right
amount to create a metal hard enough to do the job,
but soft enough to wear but not break over time.
FAILING SAFELY
For the user, impact sockets will fail safely by deforming
in one piece. Hand sockets, made from a harder
steel, can shatter or fly apart when they fail if used
on an impact tool, causing potential injuries to anyone
nearby, as those pieces can fly off at high speeds.
PROTECTING YOUR TOOL
Chrome hand sockets also punish the impact tool by
reflecting the torque vibration back into the anvil of the
tool. These tools expect the impact socket to absorb much
of the heavy vibrations, so hand sockets will wear down an
impact tool much faster than impact socket ever would.
CRUSH-GAUGE SAFETY RINGS
Another safety feature found on most
larger impact sockets are the safety ring
grooves found at the bottom of the impact
sockets. These are fittings for safety
rings, especially the crush gauge ring,
which tells you if the socket is not precisely
fitted to the anvil during operation. A
crush ring is an important early warning
device that a socket may be wearing out.
TORQUEPLUS FOR IMPACT SOCKETS
By moving the point of contact away from the
points of the fastener, TorquePlus helps to
minimize rounding and keeps the contact point flush
and tight against the side of the fastener.
EYE PROTECTION
Always remember to wear eye protection or a face
shield when working with impact tools. They are
important protections against unexpected events.
High quality impact steel has
higher consistency and fewer
aberrations for a higher lifetime of
wear and safety.
TorquePlus for Impact Sockets
is found on all but the very
largest and the very smallest
impact sockets.
