COLLECTION OF
PLACES WE LOVE

Dear reader,
We are delighted that you are holding one of our Define Fine travel books in your
hands. This book is a result of our very personal and very careful research of the life
of this amazing city. It is also a result of very long walks, many sleepless nights and
early mornings, heated discussions and our passion for everything beautiful.
In this book you will not find the usual selection of big hotels and famous sights,
those you already know or will discover without difficulty on your own or in other
guides. We are offering you a selection of places we personally love, the best that this
city and its people have to offer - the places that the locals consider to be special, the
places they love and are proud of. We are grateful for their guidance and recommendations.
But ultimately this is our and very personal choice of the finest of privately
owned and operated businesses, in all spheres of life and all price ranges. Being
entrepreneurs ourselves we made it our mission to support and promote projects
which have unique esthetical value.
We are travelling the world with our eyes and hearts wide open to beauty in all its
manifestations. We are delighted to share with you the treasures we found on the
way. We do believe that your travel through this city guided by us will be exciting,
enchanting, enriching. We are not claiming this selection to be final, there are always
new places to discover. But we are sure that we can guide you to what a world traveller
should experience – the essence of Moscow.
Enjoy your trip!
CITY

Moscow is a very proud city. And at the same time a very shy one. Home to over twelve
million people, she is like a mother, who will slap you hard if you misbehave, and love
you all the way to the stars for the rest of the time. She will feed you until you cannot
move. She will tell you fairy tales that you will never get enough of. She will hug you so
hard that you will forget all your worries, and she will never hide her own faults.
Moscow is different. Special. Unique. Although she is impressive, you can’t really call
her “pretty”. She is open-hearted, yes, but she hides it well – this city (just like the
whole country it represents), is a paradox. An enigma. You might find Moscow uncomfortably
vast, grey and surly, but don’t let this first impression intimidate you. Just
make a little effort to dig your new date a bit harder, and she will present herself in all
her glory: with those broad boulevardes and cosy parks, dramatic architecture of the
Soviet’s past, and the fresh wave of urban landscaping that gives the city that young,
“hip” vibe. The modern café culture, the art spaces, the parties, the farmers markets –
you name it. Russia’s capital has it all! Love her, and she will love you back.
You will find yourself bewitched by the soft serenading of church bells, by the
shining golden domes reaching to the clouds, by the shy smiles of Moscow’s gorgeous
women. You will be shocked by the number of Bentleys cruising its wide – in some
places extremely wide – streets. You will be amazed by the abundance of great art, with
the fairy-tale look of the Kremlin and by the incredible pulsating pace of this city’s life.
But what you really need in Moscow is a friend. We hope that you will be courageous
enough to start a conversation with a Muscovite (they will never do it themselves).
Russians love travellers, but are too shy to make that obvious. However, if you manage
to get a smile from a local, be assured that you will be invited into their homes, lives
and hearts. What greater reward can you get from a trip to the capital of this amazing
country!

ROOMS

Somehow, there are absolutely zero, cool boutique hotels. Not even just
a single hip hostel in the whole city of Moscow. We have no idea how that
happened. Seriously, why would a contemporary city like this have no address
where the modern day, jet-set gypsies could crash in style? Anyhow, you basically
have no choice but to stay in one of the overpriced chain hotels. We won’t
rave about them because you know what you’re getting, staying at the Hyatt,
Four Seasons or the Marriott. The best thing about them is their location: all
of these hospitality moguls are sitting in the very heart of the old Moscow, a
stone’s throw away from Bolshoi Theater, the Kremlin and other landmarks,
which makes it perfect for exploring the city centre on foot. If you are looking
for accommodation with a bit of historical charm, we would suggest you
consider one of the grand hotels of the past – the legendary Savoy, Metropol or
National. All three are a special treat for the old-school lovers of luxury.

FOOD

Forget about borsch and piroshky cooked by babushka and served in matryoshka
- or whatever else you may have imagined. Contemporary Moscow is
so much bigger, cuisine-wise. There are some amazing young chefs and great
experimental concepts. You will find luxury restaurants where you can flash
your latest Prada outfit, while picking the caviar-dusted foie gras. And not only
that, but you will also find inexpensive, hip gastro-pubs that can beat those
in London and Berlin hands down. Rooftop lounges and happening bars are
tucked in the basement. Food trucks! Farmers markets! And borsch with
piroshky of course – because it’s a national culinary pride and yes, we do love
them. Moscow is one of the modern gastronomic capitals– it will fill your belly,
blow your mind and win your heart.

House of writers
The property still belongs to the Russian Writers’ Union, and especially
after a recent renovation it is a novel in its own right. Huge wooden
fireplaces, tall stained glass windows, intimate corners for long private
evenings, separate dining halls for big receptions – and it has oh, so many
stories to tell. C.D.L. is favoured by the intellectual elite still (though the
times and the people have changed a lot, since it was a place reserved
for the art world dwellers only). The kitchen has seen many changes too,
though the classical Russian dishes are still one of the best in town, but
if you are up for mixing carpaccio with pelmeni, try their creative fusion
cuisine. The menu is seasonal, and most of the products are organically
grown. A real treat.
COOK’KAREKU
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Definitely. Double
definitely in this place. Cook’kareku is serving breakfasts 24/7. They
also – finally – managed to answer the eternal question : What came
first – the chicken or the egg? They are saying – absolutely no doubt
– 100% sure – The Egg. Honestly, it makes sense to us. And with over
thirty egg dishes it is hard to argue. Not that you cannot make thirty
chicken dishes, but…. Let’s not get lost in that discussion all over again.
So breakfast it is. Eggs, porridges, sandwiches, anything you can think
of, and also a lot of things which you never even would imagine eating
for breakfast. They have a menu of traditional breakfasts from pretty
much every country in the world – so take your chances and order Korean.
The place is beautifully designed – so cheerful and cosy, we would
breakfast there any day or night of the week.
HLEBNAJA LAVKA
Welcome to Provence…or is it a Russian fairytale dacha? The kind that
is an 18th century high-society summer ‘palace’, decorated in a manner
that was in vogue when the Russian-French connection was very strong.
With the dried flowers and herbs hanging from the ceiling, whitewashed
walls, woven baskets and the catchy aroma of a freshly baked berry pie,
this place could be both. Although it’s all about baked goods here (only
the bread comes in more than 16 varieties!), it’s a proper restaurant in the
disguise of a bakery. Pop in for a cup of tea with a caramelised quince
tartlet or stay for a proper meal. Eggs Benedict are sprinkled with red
caviar, buckwheat porridge is topped with tiramisu and soups are served
in the whole sourdough ‘bowl’ – not your average bread spot for sure!
PUSHKIN
This legendary restaurant is not only a long time favorite with Muscovites,
expats and an absolute must on your list, but it also serves the best of
Russian cuisine in exceptionally well done interiors. Added to this, it is
an interactive theatre as well. As you walk in you arrive in a world and
time when the men were gallant, the women were wearing long gloves
and flowing dresses, when music and literature were the main topics of
discussion at the table, and when horse carriages were the only means
of transportation. It really feels like the place has been there forever,
though the beautiful mansion has actually been built from scratch
less than 20 years ago. Since then the food and the service has stayed
above expectation. We have enjoyed many beautiful dinners and even
half drunken breakfasts – as the place is open 24/7 – and will for sure
enjoy many more. Pushkin is an absolute recommended favorite of ours,
though recommending any dishes is almost like taking away your freedom
of choice – try as much as you can, the food is simply superb!
Location! Location! Location! Right across from the Red Square, with
beautiful views over the Kremlin towers this place is packed throughout
the day – but do dress up even if you are planning to have an early
breakfast. This is where Russians and expats come to see and to be seen.
Moscow always had a few of those kind of places, where the sparkle of
diamonds is like fireworks on New Year’s Eve, where the men don’t mind
to be seen with someone other than their wives, where you wait more for
another celebrity to arrive than your delicious Beef Stroganoff. Jivago
is The Place now, and the week-long reservation list to get in, is the ultimate
proof. The menu is inventive, fusion based on Russian classics,
averaging from great to absolutely delicious.
Absolutely amazing space! Though you will have to get to it through a
get into the main dining hall, hold your jaw – as it will drop. This lucky
rabbit lives in one of the most stunning locations in Moscow – well, we
would even say the world. The dome shaped glass roof is hovering over
the enormous beautifully decorated multi leveled space, the views over
the centre of the city are mesmerizing. A perfect place for a very special
occasion, or just an intimate, silent dinner for two – trust us, most of the
time you will be speechless. The cuisine is one of the best on the planet,
especially the creative nouveau Russe dishes. Unforgettable!
with everything cool, modern, new and happening. This restaurant and
bar has the best terrace in Moscow, not just because of the view, cuisine
worth all possible stars and great cocktails, but also because of the
crowd. Being a part of “Strelka Institute for a Social City” – which has a
separate page in our book as it is definitely worth visiting – this place is
where the young and ambitious Moscovites are feeding their brains and
DANILOVSKI MARKET
Food markets have always been an essential part of Moscow life. They
still are. This is where you have your trusted supplier of the best tomatoes
from Abhazia, the fresh fish from the Black sea, the most tender lamb
from the Ivankino village, the peaches from Baku, and the fresh herbs that
Anna Ivanovna is growing in her green house. Going to the market is an
adventure. And a diplomatic one. Try to pass by all these broad smiling
hard working women and actually make a sensible choice. It is hard even
for the toughest of Russians. In the end, even they would buy some totally
unnecessary salted cucumber because the babushka was just soooo nice.
But it definitely is worth seeing. Danilovsky market is the quietest one,
where you will not be overwhelmed by the noise and harassment of the
sellers. Just come and take a look, sample some of the best homemade
cheeses, and the freshest fruit and berries – everybody will be happy if you
try their merchandise, and then just settle in one of the many super cool
cafes, have some great nibbles and a glass of really fresh cranberry juice
and watch. It is like a rolling movie, a very colourful one at that, and you
also get to smell it!
FEDYA, DICH!
Traditional farmers’ markets are getting a revival these days in Moscow,
and Danilovsky Rynok is the most hip among them all. Not only can
you enjoy the aromas of the beautifully displayed fresh veggies, herbs
and iconic Russian pickles, while walking along the aisles of this foodie
paradise, but you can also have a great meal at one of the new cafés
located right here, next to the stalls. Fedya, ditch! is one of them. This
gastropub might look like modern Scandinavian – but it tastes of modern
Russian: the kitchen is focused on the local seasonal products, with
game and forest berries taking the centre stage. Make sure you try the
pheasant, boar burger and slow cooked duck – it’s a carnivore’s feast!
Fragrant oily espresso, a glass of good wine and an honest sandwich
packed with goodness, served in a neutral, urban yet friendly set-up –
all of these are kind of quintessential, ‘nude’ needs of each and every
citizen. The right to have breakfast any time of the day is another
basic need. These are the simple keys to Nude’s success: perfect eggs
Benedict are being served here all day long. The same with pancakes and
other morning delights; cappuccinos and lattes are consistently strong
and smooth, and no one will give you the evil eye if you order your glass
the most picturesque neighborhoods of Moscow is a pure treat to your
senses. Simply but tastefully designed, Garden City is bringing what is
so badly needed in the centre of Moscow – vitamins! In all their possible
healthy salads and organic vegetables, home made cookies and porridge
Always packed. Always good. Always noisy. Always full of beautiful
also due to its proximity to some of the best design schools in Moscow,
Laboutine and Agent provocateur shops in the neighbourhood.
But mostly due to the food. Unpretentious and delicious, served on
wooden trays, Uilliam’s cuisine is supposedly Australian, but the Muscovites
would disagree – it is theirs, just the way they want it. During long
32.05
Rain or shine, this is a happening place. Located in the centre of one
of the cutest little old parks of the historical centre, Hermitage Garden,
this spot serves as an ultimate meeting point by day and a boozy pub
by night. A young and fun crowd comes here to have a slice of a juicy
Friday roast, to warm up with a cloudberry shot or daydream with a
glass of red by the window in the turquoise frame. In the summertime,
the venue gets so busy in the evenings that patrons just hang out in the
street and use their own jackets as blankets to sit on the lawn, as all the
tables are normally taken by earlier on in the evening, but no one complains.
The weekend bar-crawling routes often start from here, and end
up here, too – but some of the ‘crawlers’ never leave the spot, because
they know that eventually all their friends will be here anyway, so why
leave? If you really need to change places, just go to the venue’s sister
bar casually called ‘Around the corner’ – it sits right where its name
We have been wondering for a long time now, how come the food that
Their breakfast menu is an explosion of vitamins that will take you
eat crab. Probably the best crab in the world. Kamchatka crab has been
on the menu in most Russian restaurants since it was discovered, or better
to say since restaurants started to exist. This is not a place though,
where you will see the huge creatures looking sadly at you through the
aquarium glass – honestly it is a very sad sight. This is a place where you
can enjoy some of the best seafood dishes in Moscow (mostly crab of
course), prepared in an unpretentious but deliciously clean way, served
in a very relaxed space and at very reasonable prices.
We have a theory that you can recognise a good restaurant by the sound
Moscow has always been a city, which in a strange way embraces you
for a while and then pushes you away again. Intense and vibrant during
weekdays, yet on the weekend – in any season – it falls quiet. The insanity
of city life drives almost all Muscovites out – to the dachas and the
walks in the woods and long evenings with meat sizzling on the grills, as
well as homemade vodkas mixed with tonic and soda, Moscow weekends
are something special. There definitely will be a book about those! But
if you are a traveller – on whatever day – come here. Just to ride through
the woods, actually the most expensive woods in the world, (the real
estate prices in this area are beyond any human comprehension). Just to
sit on a beautiful terrace on the banks of the Moskva river, to listen to
the birds and have some great, (though priced appropriately accordingly
with its real estate level), food. It is well worth the trip.
OLIVE BEACH
Historically Moscow has been called ‘the port of five seas’…only there
is no sea in the city. Never mind. There is Moskva river instead, and with
the right approach it can be almost as good. To play the imitation game
you don’t need much; pick the location that’s hard to beat and build
the beach club, so well it doesn’t matter if there is any beach at all. So
here we have it: the legendary Gorky park; the picturesque bank of the
Moskva river, overlooking the gorgeous architecture of Stalin’s époque:
the merry day cruise boats passing by; the pretty wooden deck with sun
lounges; not to mention, great music and quality food. Like all of these
is not enough, but there are also real olive trees planted along the deck,
which give that odd and beautiful feeling it might not be Moscow at all.
One sip of icy Pino Grigio, and you are in Italy – no wonder Muscovites
choose this spot for a reality escape.
This little gem is tucked away in the booming bush in the far corner
in their wooden hut in the middle of it. The restaurant is a seasonal
The venue is a tongue-in-cheek mix of South Eastern Asia aesthetics –
great: start with a Thai tom yam soup, followed by Georgian kebab and
strange than you might think. The British School of Design is just a
ART

This chapter is probably the biggest in our book, and that’s for a very good
reason; art has always been big in this city, and the contemporary form of it
is at its peak right now. While well-established galleries keep on pumping, like
well-oiled machines, supplying the rest of the world with the works of Russian
artists, the new spots are popping up all the time, proving that the demand
for modern art is growing. Apart from the stand-alone galleries, there are artclusters
located in the former industrial spaces. There are visual installations,
photography, whimsical objects, and fearless statements – there’s a brave new
world just waiting for you to explore. You don’t have to be an avid art-digger to
enjoy it – just come with your mind wide-open and let it take you on a journey.

The original LB location was the first private photo centre launched in
2001, and it remains the most established gallery of the city. It doesn’t
throw any extravagant parties, nor does it flash the scandalous names -
instead, this institution keeps it classy. Now, with the launch of the new,
bigger and fancier location at the hip Red October island, the original
gallery keeps its focus on Russian and Soviet photography, with the main
idea of covering the time from the beginning of the 20th century and
until 1991. The new location, by contrast, is all about international artists,
and the spectrum of interest is pretty broad – one day it can be contemporary,
daring fashion photography, the next week – neorealism of postwar
Italy and the next month it’s an exhibit about British punk-life. There
is a cosy café and a bookstore attached to the halls, but the highlight is a
library; grab your long black and unplug from real life’s hustle and bustle,
with the best of Helmut Newton or Robert Mapplethorpe.
ART IN INTERIORS
The private house of a well-known architect and art connoisseur, Olga
Timyanskaya is something very special; a carefully restored historical
building converted into a cosy family nest…and an exhibition space and
music venue! In the olden times in imperial Russia there was a culture of
“salons”, borrowed from the French. Some well-known noble socialites
would open up their private houses – be it the city residence or a country
estate – to a selected club of guests, who would gather to listen to some
excellent music and share thoughts on modern poetry, the latest theatre
plays, social dramas and some risky political views of course. This is
pretty much what happens in this beautiful 2-level apartment. The host
of the house knows the contemporary creative scene like a fish knows
water and even if you are an avid art collector, get ready to be surprised
The area around busy and extremely shabby Kursky railway station used
to look like a warzone, and the transformation that has happened to the
massive ex-factory territory located here was the first - and successful!
– attempt to give this neighbourhood a new life. Following the classic
gentrification scenario, the ugliest walls were covered with some decent
graffiti and the red brick buildings have been occupied with art galleries,
designers’ workshops, creative studios and showrooms. Then the British
School Of Design moved in, and became a core, a beating heart for the
lifestyle of this art-cluster. Now there are cafés, bars, coffee shops, a
cinema, an arts and crafts centre for kids, a few exhibition spaces and a
rooftop chill-out zone with a romantic view on the railway – in the summertime
this roof hosts live gigs and secret parties, and in the wintertime
– Gosha Ostretsov (the Saatchi&Saatchi gallery is a massive fan), Ludmila
Konstantinova and Sergey Pahomov. In this studio they create, brainstorm,
drink tea (or vodka – c’mon, it’s an artists’world!) with guests, showcase their
same time, the world of commute can be grey and depressing, and the common
belief of what’s pretty – don’t forget we are talking about a city with a population
of twelve million now! – can be rather shocking. Nevertheless, we are full of
optimism: Russian girls have made it to the international fashion magazines;
Crafted Knitwear
In the Westerner’s perception, Russia is the land of eternal ice and snow,
which is, frankly, almost true – Russian winters last way too long, and even
summers might be quite chilly. Thus said, the most logical textiles for the
true Russian fashion industry would be not the transparent silks and floating
chiffons, but rather, wool, wool and more wool. It’s not that easy to find
something very warm that would also be hip, comfortable and affordable at
the same time. That’s why the newly trending brand Brusnika seems to be a
godsend: their knits are of exceptional quality and they don’t look like you
have put them on only to please your granny. There are some grungy chunky
sweaters, oversized cardigans, beanies and floor-length dresses that look edgy
Russians have a long tradition of private, personal, family tailors. During
a long period when Russian fashion did not exist, when all you could
buy was exactly the same dress as everybody else bought (hopefully in a
different colour), most Russian women either developed fantastic sewing
skills, or made friends with someone who did. There has definitely not
been any lack of fashionistas at any time in Moscow. When you see the
photos from our grandmothers, all the women were looking like Audrey
Hepburn and sometimes better. Our mothers actually owned evening
gowns that would befit the Queen of any country. Now, this tradition is
still very much alive, bringing out the creative potential in anyone who
owns one. Natali, besides being a great designer, stylist, and imagemaker,
is taking it to a new level. She will create an idea for your whole wardrobe,
make it from the fabrics of your choice, and ship it anywhere in the
Nebo, which translates as “sky”? This spacious 2-level store with a chilly
industrial vibe is the ultimate address if you need an outfit for a contemporary
art gallery launch party. Try some of the latest Tsumori Chisato
creations to look girly (but slightly crazy), or check what Maison Kitsune
has on offer if you have to be looking so hip it hurts. There are plenty
of choices to improve everyday life of an art director or architect, with
a great choice of Nordic cardigans and jackets successfully faking the
fundamentals of it all. Add to it the bookstore in the basement with a
smart selection of coffee table albums and a flower corner with sleek
bouquets made of peonies and hydrangeas – everything we love in one
place.
MASTER SUIT
They say: the suit doesn’t make the man, but rather, the man makes the
suit. We say that’s not true. Wrap almost any man in a top-notch, custommade,
hand-sewn suit and watch him transform from a barbarian into a
modern day Gatsby. Well, this path can take a while (in some cases – forever),
but it’s a great start anyway! Master Suit atelier on the banks of the
Moskva river is a one-step entrance into the universe of James Bond, with
everything – (except maybe a licence to kill), a man might need on his
way to becoming a gentleman. Think finest British and Italian fabrics, bespoke
service, complimentary dry cleaning, personalised embroidery on
anything from silk ties to denim – yes, these guys are specialising not only
in the fancy suits here, but they can also make you a perfectly tailored,
one-of-a-kind pair of jeans too! Add to it a weekly Monday breakfast with
bellini, Tuesday High Tea and Wednesday Afternoon Cocktails, and you’ll
understand why all Moscow celebrities are raving about this place. They
have two locations in the city center, but his one is our favorite.
CHAPURIN
Dubbed the “Russian Armani”, Igor Chapurin is the most established
name in the local fashion scene. His sleek, sculptured dresses are worn by
Russian actresses, opera singers and IT-girls featured on the red carpets
all over the world. He’s creating the costumes for Bolshoi Theatre; he
has showrooms in Milan and Paris; and he sells in Tokyo and Seoul. With
his chic and smart Tom Ford appeal, Igor Chapurin is the most expected
guest at any fashion show. Front row, of course! His clothes are glamorous
but never cross the line with kitsch – in other words, Chapurin is the
modern Russia’s luxe. His sleek and chic boutique on the banks of the
Moskva river is our favourite place to play a “first lady” game. It’s definitely
worth it to pay a visit (even if you don’t need a special occasion
dress), as Chapurin is also famous for his quirky and affordable accessories,
be it a pair of elegant gloves or a statement headpiece.
INTERIOR
DESIGN&
DECOR

Russian interior design is only a little over fifteen years old. We know that as a
fact, because one of the founders of Define Fine was right there at the roots
of it all. Veronika Blomgren was one of very few – five to be exact – professional
designers in Russia. She and her mother, Tatiana Rogova, founded the
first professional school for interior design. The sixteen years that passed since
then have been intense.
We can say with confidence that Moscow, right at this moment has more
talented interior designers than most capital cities on the planet. Unfortunately,
Russian product design is way behind, so we cannot recommend to you a lot of
places to visit for a dose of inspiration. But wherever you go in Moscow, sooner
or later you will stumble upon a design jewel. And with a new course on product
design just launched in the School of Design “Details”, we can guarantee that
in a couple of years from now you will be amazed with the Russian talent in
that field too.

It is filled to the ceiling with old, very old, rare and not so special
HOME CONCEPT
This is the space you want to move in to, immediately. Or rather you wish
it would have been your family pad for centuries – preferably somewhere
in Notting Hill. This loft feels way more like a private house than like an
interior showroom; we can totally see Benedict Cumberbatch having a
power nap on that comfy leather sofa! Why him, you might ask? Because
everything here – from the Union Jack curtains to the cricket bats on
the walls - screams “God save the Queen!”. Home Concept is an ode to
anglomania here. It was started when the future owners of the showroom
met designer Timoty Oulton, who was specialising in vintage-inspired
British furniture, and this friendship turned out to be quite fruitful. Now
Home Concept is the most amazing shopping destination for those obsessed
with everything essentially English. There is a great choice of
hand-picked American brands, too – which gives that feel of a healthy
balance. Picking a heavy vintage chest, caramel-coloured, rough leather
armchairs or a quirky wallpiece made of badminton rackets - you are not
just buying “things”, you are taking home a piece of a dream lifestyle.
EVERYWHERE IN MOSCOW
THE DESIGNERS
Russian design is not very well-known in the world. The names of famous
Russian interior designers are probably not popping up in your head right
now. But – trust us – in a few years from now they will. The School of
Design “Details”, which was founded in Moscow over 15 years ago, has
produced hundreds of exceptionally talented interior designers, and all of
them will be more than happy to go international. If you are looking for
a designer for your private island, penthouse in whatever city, or a simple
country house in the South of France – there is a guild of professionals.
And even if some of them are already hard to get and afford, there are
always recent students joining the association. A unique community of
very talented people, a phenomenon which is very rare in this world.
HEALTH &
BEAUTY

If you need a piece of beauty advice, ask a Russian girl. She’ll tell you all:
from her grandma’s secret tips, to the latest trends in cosmetic formulas and
machines. Yes, that’s right. Beauty is in our genes. But we are also pretty much
“pros” when it comes to high maintenance! So follow the Moscovites’ steps and
discover the urban spas – for a quick pick-me-up or a full day of indulgence.
However, in our book we’ve skimmed the selection of beauty addresses to the
bare minimum: Moscow is not the destination for spa vacations after all, and
you’d be better off spending your time on food, arts and other city adventures.

OCTOBER BOXING
CLUB
Take a hip, artsy island in the historical centre of the city where all the
most happening bars and clubs are and put a…boxing club among them.
Not a boring one, but an exclusive, private, almost “secret”, bijoux sport
facility. What would you get? Correct: a tornado-style trend, that puts
such an old school activity as boxing into the wish list of the city’s avantgarde
crowd. Yes, the favourite fitness activity of Sherlock Holmes is a
hot thing to practise now, and the spacious hall with its exposed red-brick
walls at the former chocolate factory, is the place to learn it. The concept
behind the October is a “white collar boxing club”, targeting successful
bankers, lawyers and other yuppies. It’s a man cave – funnily enough,
created by a petite blonde. Probably the prettiest place to get your nose
“It’s ok to care much about the beauty of your nails, even for intelligent
to the icon of Russian classical poetry for this frivolous translation of
this famous quote, but the meaning is quite accurate anyway, and we have
to admit that things haven’t really changed much since the XIXth century.
Nails are important, and a friendly beauty bar with a brisk service is an
NATURA SIBERICA
It’s not that uncommon when foreigners think of Siberia as an independent
country that borders on Russia; it’s wild, mysterious, inhabited
with giant bears and…huge. All of that is true but trust us, Siberia IS
Russia - and it’s probably the most beautiful part of it too. Those rare
months when it’s not covered in deep virgin snow, it blooms, vigorously
producing the most amazing flowers, berries and herbs, some of them
with centuries-proven healing properties. Oak bark, Northen cloudberry,
thyme, nettle, Altai seabuckthorn, black crowberry – these ingredients
might sound exotic, but in fact they are traditional Russian beauty secrets.
Natura Siberica uses all of them – certified organic and ethically produced
– for serums, creams and toners that are winning the world over. Monoboutiques
in Copenhagen, Tokyo, Barcelona, Hong Kong and corners in
London, Paris and Singapore are just the humble beginning. If you are a
fan (and we are!), visit not only the brands’ flagship store in Moscow, but
also one of their great SPA centres, or even travel all the way to Siberia to
see their massive organic farm, where rare healing plants are being grown
According to the popular stereotype, “adventure” in Russia is something you
point of travelling to Russia, isn’t it?).
Let’s take it easy—how about exploring the breathtaking Moscow metro, or
And BLV, a cluster of high-end luxury boutiques in the posh residential area
this subculture. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is not a metaphor here; this place is all
people, diluted with an army of wannabes – the latter ones are the most fun
Although Barvikha Luxury Village is a bottomless source of anecdotes, the
Thank you for making this world a better place!
Your recommendations are welcome!
DEFINE FINE is our personal, private collection, and as
such it is ever-growing. Please, let us know if we missed
a great place or a new one has just opened, if you know a
great artist, who will be happy to open his or her world to
the public, or someone finally organizes sightseeing tours
on flying unicorns (looking forward to that one!).
Please note, that we cannot feature seasonal or short
lasting projects – places and people in our collection have
to stick around for a while.
Looking forward to hear from you!
www.definefine.com

SO, HOW DO WE DEFINE WHAT IS “FINE”?
The places we choose for our Define Fine collections are:
BEAUTIFUL. We do believe that beauty will save the world. We are looking for
beauty in all of its manifestations.
LOCAL. The places we choose are deeply connected to the quintessence of the
local life. We will not recommend a sushi bar in Rome or a pizzeria in Tokyo –
unless of course they are incredibly exceptional.
GENUINE. We choose the places that have integrity and where passion is more
important than business revenues. Some venues exist only because their owners
are quirky and just a little bit crazy. Some swim against the current. But if
it is done through true passion – it inevitably wins our hearts.
UNIQUE. We believe in the inspiration of individuality, the bright light of
diversity, the magic in endless possibilities from the seed of a great idea. We admire
the courage of those who are ready to risk. We applaud those who want
to be different.
TOUCHING OUR HEARTS. In our journeys, we are looking for the soul of the cities
we visit. We listen to the drums of each city’s heartbeat, to the flutes of its streets
and we hear the symphony that each city is playing. The places we choose are
essential instruments in this orchestra.

THIS IS HOW WE MAKE OUR DEFINE FINE CITY GUIDES.
We ask the locals. We follow their footsteps.
We listen to our hearts. We trust our judgement.
We never set up a meeting or a photoshoot.
Our opinions are not influenced by anyone.
Our photographs are never pre-arranged.
We come incognito.
We pay our bills.
We love what we do. And we love to share it with you!
