CUDDLE THE DOGS

Dog Rescue by Elephant Nature Park

Do you have a little time to spare? Do you love animals? Then you should

consider helping Dog Rescue, at Elephant Nature Park.

Dog Rescue Project began in 2011, as a result of catastrophic floods in

Bangkok. Volunteers from Elephant Nature Park rescued dogs trapped

on rooftops and bridges; they provided them with food and medicines, and for

those whose owners could not be found, they brought them back to Chiang Mai.

Soon, the famous elephant sanctuary, was re-organized to welcome

these new family members and large “dog runs” were built with all kind of

things for the dogs to climb on, swim in and play amongt. A small animal

hospital has been constructed and a full time vet and clinic manager employed

to care for the dogs.

With 200-acre stretch of land, the park is big enough to welcome

66 elephants, 200 cats, 450 dogs plus many horses and buffaloes. Lek-

Sangduen Chailert, the founder of the park, is an internationally recognized

animal rights defender.

Volunteering with Elephant Nature Park Dog Rescue Project provides

an opportunity to truly make a difference in the lives of so many animals.

The minimum time commitment with the dogs is one week, but some of the

volunteers have stayed for months. It is not an easy job but the love that dogs

give you back is unforgettable and so very rewarding.

COVER

STORY

While ladies have a million ways to keep their baby-soft cheeks

in check, us fellas tend to rely on soap and water and a wink in the

mirror each morning. But perhaps we should take time out of our

busy schedules this week to visit one of the charming razor-wielding

barbers of Chiang Mai for a good old-fashioned male pampering

experience.

Now I speak strictly to a male audience here – those who

probably don’t go in for so much body care on a day-to-day basis.

But you might find that a 20-minute visit to a local barber in

Chiang Mai might be just the meditation and rest you so badly seek

in the middle of a hectic day. I’m sure there are many in our midst

who will cringe at the thought of a cut-throat razor being held to

their necks. Fear not! Lie back and close your eyes; bend your

neck to the blade and whimper ye not! It’s all quite safe.

Did you know that in days gone by, barbers were often called upon to

perform surgery and extract teeth? Even Chaucer waxed lyrical about

the profession: “A merry childe he was, so God we save; well could he

let blood, clyppe and shave.” Such barbaric barberism or quackery has

been somewhat outlawed since. It is a rare sight indeed to see the red

and white pole of the barber shop nowadays. However, in many parts

of the world, going to the barber’s for a shave is all in a hard day’s work.

In India, the barber will scrub your face so hard you’ll think you are

in a wrestling arena. In the Middle East you will leave the shop reeking

of cheap cologne. In South America, they will begin by scrubbing your

face with a bar of soap, and in Vietnam you might find that the barber’s

shop sign is simply a front for an altogether more pleasurable service

indeed.

But nowhere in the world do they provide such a good shave as in

Thailand. Thousands of barbers ply their trade all around the country.

Simply go in and ask for a “gon nuad.” You will invariably be invited to

lie back in a chair by a veteran of the blade, who will then gently tie

a white bib around your neck and shoulders. Of course, there are many

female barbers in Thailand too. In a large air-conditioned barber shop

next to Wat Suandok on Suthep Road, most of the 15 barbers are

women and fine scalpers they are too.

Nonetheless, this is a traditionally male domain. After all, how many

ladies know that the delicate plucking of hair from just below the nostrils

will bring a tear to a man’s eyes? Or that a blood-weeping nick on the

neck causes no pain, whereas the after-burn of a scraping rash lasts

all day? In any case, relax and unwind as the chair reclines and you

find yourself staring up at the ceiling. The barber affixes a fresh blade

to his or her razor and whips up a soapy lather for your bristly visage.

You now close your eyes and submit your throat to the masked

0sman above. He, or she, will lather your face carefully with a horsehair

brush and then, with the whistle of steel slicing delightfully down

your cheeks, scrape all that nasty stubble into the dustbin of history.

A good barber will shave downwards once and then up again.

He will snare the hair that hides in the secret garden of your chin cleft;

will deftly prune the unruly wires that sprout from your nose, your ears

and your eyebrows; and will gently sandpaper the stubble on your

chin and above your lips. And, when he’s finished, he’ll do it all again

a second time.

For the next round, some barbers prefer to pat your face down with

talcum powder (the barber’s forensic duster for hunting bum-fluff).

Otherwise, get ready for the next step of your journey, which is the

delicate shearing of your ears, your forehead and the back of your

neck. You might find this news disturbing, but it feels so good that you’ll

probably fall into a gentle sleep. Of course, in five years you’ll look like

a werewolf, but what the heck.

Now your entire mug is flawlessly fluffless, but dry as a desert.

So your aide-de-blade should have prepared a lovely, wet, steaming

hot, lemon-scented towel to wrap around your head. This is the piece

de resistance: any barber who does not include this service is not worth

a guinea. Post-shave pampering is what it’s all about. If in doubt, insist

on a post-shave face spa before you begin. Pay an extra 20 baht if

necessary. Otherwise, the experience is about as refreshing as rubbing

sand in your face.

Anyway, assuming you have been bidden to lay back and enjoy the

hot towel treatment, you should now be ready to move onto a smooth

facial scrub. Your barber will lovingly wipe your peachy jowls down with

an icy cold towel and then dab raw alcohol into any nicks in the artwork.

And just in case you haven’t already melted into jelly yet, a good barber

should always finish off with a firm massage of the head, the neck and

the shoulders.

Et voila! In only 20 minutes you are feeling soothed, content and

refreshed. Your cheekbones are sculpted, your chin quite statuesque,

and your perky little jowels are smoother than 100 babies’ bottoms.

All that for around 50 or 80 baht. Not bad.

Skill Barber Shop (City map C2)

The Culter Barber Shop (City map E5)

For many years a series of traditional shaving parlours have

occupied the street just west of Wat Suandok on Suthep Road;

these are great places to get the old-fashioned treatment.

Another place is located on Ratchawong Road, next to Neramit

Tailor Shop. It is call Baanjong Kesa Barber Shop and is one of the

oldest barber shop in Chiang Mai (50 to 80 baht).

Skill Barber Shop on Huay Kaew Road, is a great place to go to

(80 to 150 Baht). This place is also one of the very famous places in

Chiang Mai where to get special head shaving styles.

For fashionable styles, you can’t beat The Cutler at 75 Samlan

Road inside the south side of the moat. Prices are somewhat higher

than the previous venues (150 to 200 baht) but well worth it if you

are looking for a hip new look. Reservations are recommended.

LAOS

LUANG

PRABANG

Timeless Beauty

Lose yourself in the timelessness of Luang Prabang. Stroll

along narrow lanes that wind between beautifully-restored

Buddhist temples, traditional timber homes, and French colonial

structures. Experience for yourself the legendary Lao hospitality

and engage in the daily rhythms of a place shaped by a thousand

years of ritual...

Luang Prabang is a small, dream-like town located in Northern

Laos. Built on a peninsula formed by the Mekong and the Nam

Khan rivers, the city is also encircled by lush green mountains.

From Chiang Mai, there is a daily direct flight by Lao Airlines. Well

known for its plethora of Buddhist temples and monasteries,

the city is a UNESCO World-Heritage site full of enchanting

things to do.

Luang Prabang is an outstanding example of the fusion of

traditional architecture and Lao urban structures with those built

by the European colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Its unique, remarkably well-preserved townscape illustrates

a key stage in the blending of these two distinct cultural traditions.

The richness of Luang Prabang architecture reflects the mix

of style and materials. The majority of the buildings are wooden

structures while the temples are made of stone.

From temples to kayaks, from spas to caves, there are

a thousand activities to do in Luang Prabang. But the most

famous activity may be just walking in the city streets and

enjoying everyday life in Luang Prabang.

MUST SEE IN LUANG PRABANG :

- Xieng Thong Temple: probably the most beautiful temple in

town. Although they are all very beautiful. Entry 5,000 kips.

- Pak Ou Caves also known as the Buddha Cave. This trip

requires a 45 minutes boat trip and you will love seeing everyday

life along the Mekong river.

- Phu Si Hill, one of the best spots from where seeing the view

of the city.

- Whisky Village: the boat will take you there and you will see

whisky bottles with snakes in them.

- Tad Sae Waterfall, located in a park about 13 kilometres from

town. It is a must for nature lovers but be careful during the

rainy season.

KOREA HOUSE

grâce à la cuisine “well-being” proposée à Korea House.

LE NOUVEL AN CHINOIS

premiers jours de l’an.

an Chinois!
