SPRING/SUMMER 2016
”
I truly believe that music
and the other arts which have
their source in the realm of
the senses can exercise a great
influence on the way a human
grows and can also affect the
values and ethical assumptions
of society, which is too often
influenced by judgements born
of frustration, prejudice and
the baser motives of revenge
and punishment.
Yehudi Menuhin
Welcome to The Menuhin Hall as we commemorate
the centenary of our Founder with an exciting series
of events culminating in the summer with what we
hope will be a glorious Menuhin 100 Festival at the
start of July.
The Menuhin 100 Festival starts with a concert by past pupil
Nicola Benedetti, followed by a fundraising dinner, and finishes with
the great actor Samuel West performing in ‘Shakespeare and Music’
alongside our pupils. In between, there will be an organ recital by
James O’Donnell in St. Mary’s Church, Stoke d’Abernon, concerts
in the grotto at Painshill Park, ‘Menuhin on Film’ presented by
Bruno Monsaingeon and a very special series of six Showcase
Concerts performed by the pupils.
We have a glittering array of artists appearing earlier in the year as
part of our Celebrity Series. At the end of January, Jeremy Menuhin,
along with Mookie Menuhin and Sasha Rozhdestvensky, Steven Isserlis
and Stephen Hough in February, Joji Hattori with our own School
orchestra in April (as part of the Menuhin International Violin
Competition), and the Chiaroscuro String Quartet (led by past pupil,
Alina Ibragimova) in May. To complete the list of celebrities, the
great guitarist John Williams returns with multi-instrumentalist
Richard Harvey in June. On 21st April (the eve of Yehudi Menuhin’s
birthday), Humphrey Burton, his biographer, will give a lecture
about the great man – an event which is not to be missed.
As well as other Showcase Concerts given by the pupils (on 4 and
26 February, 17 March, 5 May and a lunchtime concert on 25 May),
as usual we welcome several organisations to the Hall – Surrey Mozart
Players (23 April), the National Youth Harp Orchestra (24 April)
and Australian National Touring Opera (18 June).
Sadly, this is the last brochure produced by our Hall Manager,
Ambrosine Desoutter. She has been with the School since 1999
and Hall Manager since its opening in 2006. She has steered the
Hall through its first ten years with great skill, dedication and passion.
Very many of you reading this will have experienced at first hand the
charm and sense of joy with which she did her job. We thank her so
very much for all she has done for the Hall. Alice Benzing takes over
the post in January. As we wish Ambrosine the best of luck for her
future endeavours, we welcome Alice, whom we know is very much
looking forward to joining the team and presenting top-class events
in The Menuhin Hall in the months and years ahead.
Anniversary Appeal
Appeal update
Please accept my sincere thanks for your remarkable support towards
our Anniversary Appeal. Thanks to you, the School has already secured
a phenomenal £2.57 million towards the Music Studios alone!
This progress has been matched by the equally rapid construction of
this building as many concert-goers will have seen. Whether you have
chosen to support the creation of first-rate facilities in which students
can practise or the provision of much-needed bursaries, your generosity
will enable the School to nurture exceptional musical talent as never
before. However, as we enter the final phase of the Anniversary Appeal,
we continue our efforts to raise just over £900k before construction
is completed!
I am delighted to announce that, thanks to the generosity of our Appeal
Chairman Stuart Mitchell and a number of other special donors, the
School is able to offer up to £500,000 of Matched Funding for all gifts
received before 1 July 2016. This means that any donation made will
be matched £1 for £1, in effect doubling the value of your donation.
There are a number of ways in which you can make the most of
this opportunity:
• Join others in supporting a named Music Studio, room or a concert.
• Sign up for a number of highly memorable events throughout the
centenary year, culminating in the ten-day Gala Festival.
• Participate in our ‘Buy a Brick’ scheme. If you would like to purchase an
individual brick paver for display in the courtyard of the Music Studios
for £50, you will be able to leave your mark for generations to come.
For further information, please contact me direct on 01932 584797
or at anthony.medhurst@yehudimenuhinschool.co.uk
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you.
Showcase Concerts
Showcase Concerts provide an opportunity for
pupils to perform in front of an appreciative,
friendly and supportive audience and, as such,
are part of the pupils’ education – a chance for
them to develop the ability to communicate
their love of music.
Programmes are selected from a broad range
of music that is being studied at any one time
in the School. The Director of Music consults
with the instrumental teachers and together
they decide which pieces are ready to present
to the public.
Inspired by an incident which occurred to Leoncavallo
as a child, this highly impassioned and dramatic opera
is composed in verismo style.
Canio and his travelling comedy troupe arrive at a
town for a show scheduled for the coming evening.
Unbeknownst to him, his wife Nedda has fallen in
love with another man.
As Canio discovers the truth about Nedda,
he is confronted with the fact that in spite
of his heartbreak the show must go on.
When the curtain does go up, all boundaries of fiction
and reality become blurred and the audience is left in
nail-biting suspense as to what unscripted fate is left
for our actors.
The Friends of The Yehudi Menuhin School
continue to support the School by regularly
attending many of the concerts held at
the Hall. Not only are they a warm and
appreciative audience for our very talented
young musicians but, as a group, they also
contribute in other ways. These include the
organisation of a number of fundraising
events which help to finance pupil bursaries.
Some of these are held at the Hall itself,
such as the Bridge Teas, whilst others are
held outside the School. We are also looking
at new initiatives that encourage everyone
to take part whilst enjoying a convivial
atmosphere. Look out for further details.
Many of our long-standing Friends tell us
that they particularly enjoy following our
pupils as they progress through the School
and, indeed, after they leave and become
professional musicians. Friends may,
therefore, be particularly interested in the
summer exhibition of work by the artist
Geraldine van Heemstra who over the last
year has been drawing the pupils as they
rehearse and perform. Full details are on
page 6 of this brochure.
We are very grateful for all of the support
which the Friends give to the School. In
return Friends enjoy benefits such as priority
booking for concerts, termly mailings and
invitations to preconcert receptions and
other Friends events.
UK, so that, today, our approach and our achievements
are admired throughout the world. At this forum we will
discuss what that future should and could hold. Please
