2 Roscommon County Community Foundation • MyRCCF.org • 2015 Annual Report
Chairman & Executive Director Welcome
When we think of community, we think of people, neighborhoods, cooperation and collaboration. Roscommon
County Community Foundation acts as a catalyst to bring together people in our community who are dedicated to
serving others. With your support and generosity the Foundation is able to direct funding where it is needed most.
As the needs of the community continue to change and evolve, your Foundation continues to adapt to meet those
ever changing needs.
This year’s annual report illustrates how the Foundation’s grantmaking impacts our community. There are many
people who play key roles in these results: from generous donors whose continued support is essential to our
mission, to an outstanding staff that acts as a good steward of these assets, to a dedicated and engaged Board of
Trustees, all focused on the Foundation’s mission to inspire change for generations to come. We thank each of you
who support the Foundation and encourage you to continue that support.
While 2015 was a year of progress and change, it was the generosity of the donors that we remember most and
that we celebrate in this Annual Report. We are proud to play our part in bringing the pieces together to meet the
needs of our community, both today and for generations to come. With your continued partnership, the Roscommon
County Community Foundation will continue its mission to improve and enrich the quality of life for all throughout
our county. For good. For ever. For everyone.
Our family has been enjoying the Houghton Lake area for four
generations. We have many fond memories of weekends and
vacations at the “Lake” and the time we were able to spend together
as a family. Even as our children have grown into adults and begun
their own families and careers, Houghton Lake continues to be
a focal point in our lives. We’ve had so much enjoyment in the
Houghton Lake area we wanted to make sure that future generations
have the same opportunity. We couldn’t think of a better way to do
that than setting up an endowment fund at the Roscommon County
Community Foundation to provide resources to continue to improve
Houghton Lake.
Greg Rogers, Rogers Family Endowment for Houghton Lake
Your planned gift to the Roscommon County Community Foundation will have meaning and impact for
generations to come. Legacy giving does not require a large income or vast estate. Legacy giving only
requires a thoughtful intention to make a difference by identifying a charitable organization in your will or
estate plan.
Benefits of Legacy Giving
• A relationship with the Foundation during your
lifetime.
• A role in determining how your legacy gift will
be used.
• Satisfaction in knowing your legacy will make a
difference for your community.
• Special recognition in newsletters and annual
reports, unless anonymity is desired.
• Receipt of the RCCF Annual Report.
• Some planned gifts can reduce your tax burden
during your lifetime, such as gifts of securities
donated in-kind.
Types of Planned Giving
Gifts made through a bequest in a will or trust are
not the only means of planned giving. Other ways in
which donors can apply personal resources toward
the betterment of their community through planned
giving include:
• Estates
• Bequest in a Will or Living Trust
• Gifts of Life Insurance
• Charitable Gift Annuities
• Charitable Remainder Trusts
• Beneficiary Designation of Individual Retirement
Accounts (IRA, 401K, 403B)
If you’ve already included the Community Foundation in your will, we encourage you to let us know so
that we may honor you as a member of the Legacy Society. Legacy Society members share a dedication
to Roscommon County – but every act of giving is personal and unique. Contact us to discuss your
preferences.
Employer Gift Matching
Many companies sponsor matching gift programs that
will match charitable contributions made by their
employees. Some even match volunteer hours and
gifts made by retirees and/or spouses. These programs
are a great way for companies to support community
foundations and for you to double or even triple your
charitable contribution. Most companies have matching
gift forms available through their personnel office that
you fill out, mail to us, and we take care of the rest!
By awarding my scholarships, you have
lightened my financial burden, which allows
me to focus more on the most important
part of school: learning. Your generosity has
inspired me to “pay it forward” and I hope
one day to help others, as you have helped
me when I needed your financial support.
–Katie Burmester
I am so proud to be a part of a community
that is so supportive of their teens.
It was so great to watch my friends
and classmates receive much needed
scholarships thanks to your great
foundation. I am also very grateful for the
scholarships I was awarded. Thank you for
all that you do.
I am very fortunate for being awarded, for
the scholarship has lightened my financial
burden, which will allow me to focus on my
pre-medicine studies at the University of
Michigan this fall. In the near future, I hope
to continue the legacy Dr. Bernardo has left
behind and care for and save the lives of
many as a physician. Thank you again for
giving me the opportunity to continue my
education and achieve my aspirations, and
for your generosity and support.
It’s the small pieces that make the big picture ...
Roscommon County Community Foundation
Youth Advisory Council (YAC)
The RCCF YAC is a youth-led philanthropic council that is committed to improving our community.
There are two components of a YAC: grantmaking and community service. Grantmaking means awarding
grant requests relating to youth from funds from the Roscommon County Kellogg Youth Fund of RCCF.
YAC is a program that also values community service. Members are encouraged to go out in the community,
roll up their sleeves and volunteer to make an impact. In addition to recommending grants and participating
in service projects, the YAC members will learn and participate in different trainings, where topics include
diversity, volunteerism, leadership, and communications. The Youth Advisory Council is very important to
the Foundation and to the community.
Students that are interested in joining should possess qualities that exhibit passion for their community,
not necessarily having a 4.0 GPA, or be extremely involved in extracurricular activities. We are committed
to involving a wide range of youth to represent the geographic, socioeconomic, ethnic, and educational
differences in our community. YAC includes youth of grades 8-12, from Roscommon and Houghton Lake
High Schools, Houghton Lake Community Education, Charlton Heston Academy, and Second Chance
Academy.
Alec Frey, 2015 Vice
Chairman: What YAC
means to me is the ability to
give back to other non-profit
organizations that help out
the community. It also makes
me realize that people think
students can make the right
decisions for their community.
I get to meet new friends
at YAC. The YAC advisors
actually believe in us to make
the right decisions for the community. It’s nice knowing that
they are there to help and guide us.
Theresa McMunigal, Advisor: Serving as a YAC
advisor has been very meaningful to me. For the past five
years, RCCF has supported our students through grants
which make our annual field trip possible. As I consider
both why I enjoy the experience and wish to be a part of
YAC, I realize that this opportunity allows for me to give
back to RCCF on behalf of my students in some small way.
One of the things I enjoy most about being a YAC
advisor is watching my students flourish during the grant
screening process. The responsibility given to students is
very important; this process gives students a glimpse of
real-world adult decision making. I believe that YAC makes
students realize that they are valuable members of the
community and helps them understand that they have power
to make contributions that strengthen our county.
It is always fun to spend time with students outside of
the school day; YAC provides another opportunity to help us
empower students within their education. Forging stronger
relationships with our students and watching them make
friends from the area is very rewarding for me as an advisor.
YAC serves as a strong community support for this area; I
cannot thank RCCF enough for everything they do for our
local schools.
Lauren Wolverton - YAC Member: I enjoy being a
part of YAC because I know that I am a part of something
that is helping the community. It is a great feeling because
this is where we live and where a lot of us will live for the
rest of our lives. Being a YAC member means giving back
to the organizations who help our county.
Roseann Johnson, YAC Member: YAC is a place
where we can meet new people our age and help the
community with them. YAC is lending a helping hand to
people in need. YAC is being role models to our community.
Ryan Sheffield, YAC Member: I am grateful for being
in YAC because we get to help out in the community. The
community is thankful for the service; last year we held
a food drive and everyone thanked us so much for what
we were doing. It felt great. Everything we do for the
community helps and I think we need more young people
who want to help out.
Marisol Tinoco - YAC Member: To me, YAC is an
important group for students and teachers. We learn what
is going on in our community and people around us. They
teach us about social issues so that we can be aware of them.
Through YAC, we help our community in any way we can.
I’m glad that I get to meet so many nice new people my age
and get to be a part of something. It is fun and you find out
about things you didn’t know about before. I am happy to be
a part of this group.
