Two Friday nights in a row I was at on
outdoor music event when an unexpected
storm rolled in, cutting the
experience short.
Two weeks ago I was
at Boji Bay, listening to
Robbie V, when my girlfriend
got a phone call
from her daughter telling
us it was pouring in
Spirit Lake and headed
our way.
We packed up quickly,
hustled to our car

and made it home just
as the sputters hit our
windshield.
My second Friday music
night was at Sheldon’s RiseFest, where we
were just settled in listening to Building 429,
but this time facing north and watching the
storm clouds roll toward us.
When the concert had to be cut short and
concert-goers told to take shelter in their cars,
people got a little crazy — grabbing kids and
lawn chairs and running across the alfalfa field
toward the parking area.
My husband was photographing the event
and had left his camera bag and extra lenses
with me. Thinking that was more valuable
than our folding lawn chairs, I calmly packed
up the camera gear.
A wall of wind already had hit us at that
point, and the sky didn’t look like it was getting
worse, so I packed up the lawn chairs
next. Only able to carry two of them with the
camera gear and my purse, I made the trek up
the hill to our car.
Time appeared on my side, so I hoofed back
down the hill to retrieve the last of the chairs.
As I loaded them on my back, I thought,
“What if?”

Announcing: Murder
Okoboji Summer Theatre brings whodunit mystery to stage
When you pick up the newspaper,
you expect to read the latest
news and updates about the
place where you live and the people that
live there.
What you don’t expect is to find a cordial
notice announcing that one of those
people is going to be murdered.
But that’s just what happens in “A
Murder is Announced,” a play that has
been adapted by Leslie Darbon from an
Agatha Christie novel. It is on stage at
Okoboji Summer Theatre through Sunday,
June 26.
When the residents of Clipping Cleghorn
pick up The Gazette, they find a
notice that reads: A murder is announced
and will take place on Friday, Oct. 13,
at Little Paddocks at 6:30 p.m. Friends
please accept this.
For those who live at Little Paddocks,
the announcement is beyond unsettling.
Thinking it must be a hoax, skit or a
game, many of the locals show up to
see just what happens when the clock
chimes 6:30 p.m.
The lights go out and a man enters
with a gun and a flashlight. Things are
in chaos. All of the characters are talking,
crying and screaming. There’s gunfire.
After fumbling around in the dark, the
assembled group is finally able to get the
lights back on. And who is dead on the
drawing room floor?
Well, the gunman who broke in.
An easy explanation of the gunman
accidentally shooting himself is quickly
dismissed as secrets small and very, very big
begin to come to the light.
Is anybody who they say they are? And
what are their true motives?
Miss Marple is everyone’s favorite
mother figure, but with a bit of snarky
attitude and a whole lot of curiosity
when it comes to crime. Allison Sword,
who plays Miss Marple, digs into her
character, just like Miss Marple digs into
the case alongside Inspector Craddock,
played by Timo Aker. The two actors have
a great intellectual chemistry where they
spark off of each other.
Will Miss Marple and Inspector Craddock
finally get to the bottom of this
whodunit with plenty of more twists and
turns to keep the audience guessing?

Celebrate Independence
Day weekend in George
The city of George is set for a
summer celebration. The annual
Freedom Days festivities will ring
in Independence Day weekend across
four days throughout the Lyon County
community.
Things start Friday, July 1, with the
George Museum opening at 2 p.m.
and the Pedal Tractor Pull for children
ages 4-11 at Old Park at 6 p.m. The
first night of festivities conclude with
the crowning of Miss George and
Little Miss George during the pageant
at 7:30 p.m. inside the George-Little
Rock High School auditorium.
Saturday will be a full day starting
with a Fun Run/Walk along the recreation
trail. The rest of the morning
will be taken up with duck races, the
start of the car show, and the 4-H food
stand and George Museum opening
up for the day
At 1 p.m., gather round the parade
route to collect candy and wave at the
floats as they cruise by. Next up is the
Antique Tractor Pull before the rest of
the afternoon’s activities start up at
the school grounds. Games and inflatables,
live music from Risky Business,
pie auctions and door prizes will fill
up an entertaining evening capped off
by a fantastic fireworks show.
The weekend winds down with
Dad’s Belgian Waffle Breakfast on
Sunday and the Betterment Club Fishing
Tournament at Locker Park on
Monday morning.

Wakesurfing
Surfing theOkoboji
I
have always had a fear of water sports. Although
I spent many afternoons of my childhood
tubing with my cousins, waterskiing
and wakeboarding were never appealing activities
to me. The thought of injuries plagued my
mind, and I never felt the desire to give water
sports a shot. This week, however, I decided it
was time to conquer my fear.
If you’re cruising across the Lakes on a day
where the waves are calm and the summer
breeze is stifled, you often can find people wakesurfing.
Wakesurfing, a water sport I only just recently
heard of, is where an individual trails behind a
boat, coasting on the boat’s wake without using
a towrope as a guide. Typically, a rider will use
a towrope to get up on the wake, but will drop
the rope shortly after and simply ride the wave’s
peak like surfing. Once I learned about this incredible
water sport, I was determined to give it
a chance.
There are several young adults in the Okoboji
area that have mastered the art of wakesurfing.
Chris Halbur, Cole Peterson and Louis Noel,
to name a few. The three friends, with summer
homes on West Lake Okoboji, spend their time
working at Maxwell’s Beach Café and Village
West Resort in Okoboji. When they’re not working,
you can pretty much always find them surfing
the endless waves of the Iowa Great Lakes. I
caught up with them this week to learn the ropes
and, hopefully, catch a wave or two myself.
Halbur, Peterson and Noel all showed me
their wakesurfing tricks and I was astonished.
Through watching them, I learned how to place
my feet, shift my weight and ultimately get up
on the board. I observed how they read the
waves carefully, knowing when it was the perfect
time to nail a trick or gently coast through a
rough patch of waves. Years of practice have truly
made perfect. With all my watching and learning
I was ready to wakesurf.
My first attempt at wakesurfing was absolutely
horrendous. Like many water sports,
wakesurfing takes a ton of necessary practice. As
someone who is notoriously impatient, I was

instantly frustrated that I couldn’t get up on the
board. Several attempts later, I still struggled to
last more than a couple seconds balanced on
the wake. More of my time was spent swallowing
water and holding on to the rope for dear
life than it was actually wakesurfing. However,
through my failure I learned a very valuable lesson.
Before the afternoon began, I was genuinely
nervous to wakesurf. With two knee surgeries
and two heart surgeries under my belt, you
would think this would be the last thing to terrify
me. The mental pep talks continually played
on a reel in my head reminding myself that I
could do it. After trying my best to wakesurf I
learned a valuable lesson: Conquering my fear
was much more important than the potential of
failing at wakesurfing.
This week’s “Sight of Summer” gave me some
much-needed courage to keep trying new things
as I continue my journey through Okoboji. I’m
so excited to see what next week’s adventure has
in store for me! F

A
bit of country and a bit of rock
’n’ roll adds up to a whole lot of
fun this Fourth of July weekend
in Okoboji. The Live at the Lake concert
series at Arnolds Park Amusement
Park hosts three bands on consecutive
nights at Preservation Plaza.
“We’re really happy with the lineup,”
said Paul Plumb, the Arnolds
Park Amusement Park marketing and
communications director. “The main
thing in pulling it off is the planning
in the off season — getting the bands
and sponsorships lined up. They’re
all really good bands and will give
people different music to enjoy.”
It kicks off with The Rolling Stoners
at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 2.
“If you like The Rolling Stones’
music you’ll love their show,” Plumb
said. “They were a last minute addition
to last year’s summer lineup and
put on a great show.”
Adding to the excitement of the
show is that some members of the
Minneapolis-based Rolling Stoners
are local guys from the Lakes area,
including lead singer Joe Gamble who
Plumb says “really gets into it with the
role of Mick Jagger.”
Continuing the rockin’ weekend
will be the Farm Rock Band at 7:30
p.m. Sunday, July 3.

“I haven’t seen them in person yet,
but everything I’ve heard and seen
online and read about them has been
great,” Plumb said. “They’ll play all
through the evening with no breaks.
They’re a great party band.”
After that Sunday night party with the
Farm Rock Band, it will be time to wrap
up Independence Day Weekend with
Iowa Great Lakes regulars Kory and the
Fireflies at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 4.
The ever-popular fireworks show
over West Lake Okoboji will start after
sunset as Kory and the Fireflies conclude
their show.
“With Kory and the Fireflies
sponsored by Kozy Heat and the
fireworks, it’s always a busy night on
the green space. It’s the place to be,”
Plumb said. “Families come from
miles around and people have the tradition
of coming back year after year.”
This year they can rock with The
Rolling Stoners, party with the Farm
Rock Band and ring in the Fourth of
July with Kory and the Fireflies. All
with the natural beauty of West Lake
Okoboji and historic Arnolds Park
Amusement Park as the backdrop.
“It will be a great time for families
and friends to get together,” Plumb
said. “You can’t go wrong with an

Lake Affect celebrates 10 years
Damon Dotson’s concert on the water slated for July 2
For Damon Dotson, what started
out as a simple idea has now
turned into an annual Fourth of
July event.
Lake Affect, an outdoor concert on
the waters of Little Miller’s Bay in West
Lake Okoboji, will be taking place at
noon Saturday, July 2. This will mark
the 10th year of the unique concert.
Dotson, an Okoboji native, has
been playing music for as long as he
can remember. In his adolescence he
formed the Damon Dotson Band and
over the years he gradually added five
members, who make up a six-piece
ensemble. Dotson says he always
wanted to find a way to host a large
musical event in the Okoboji area, but
never really knew how to do it.
“Brian Moore, our saxophone
player, and I threw around the idea
while sitting at Captain’s one night,”
says Dotson. “Eventually, we got word
that Tom Clary had expressed interest
in providing us with a stage and that’s
kind of how it all started.”
Organizing Lake Affect is no simple
task. At least six months are needed
for planning, booking and putting
it all together. Dotson says that each
year he learns new ways to stay prepared
for the following year. The day
after last year’s event he already began
making calls and sending out texts.
“It’s kind of a one-man thing. I am
in charge of all of the booking, of the
sound production, bands, artwork,
koozies, posters, permits, etc. It’s quite
a bit to take on, but I wouldn’t have it
any other way,” says Dotson.
With a decade under Lake Affect’s
belt, this year will certainly be much
different than the first. The first Lake
Affect was held in front of the Gardens.
The bands ran their own sound
equipment and the crowd was very
small. Today, the event is held in Little
Miller’s Bay in West Lake Okoboji,
only a block from where Dotson grew
up. With hundreds of people expected
to attend, whether for the first time or
as part of a tradition each year, Dotson
is overwhelmed with the success
of Lake Affect.
“As the 10th year, it has hit me more
this year just how cool it is that local
area Okoboji businesses step up and
be a part of the event,” says Dotson.
“It’s in Okoboji. By Okoboji. For Okoboji.
I’m very thankful to be a part of
that community of great people.”
The 10th Annual Lake Affect packs
an impressive lineup. The Pork Tornadoes,
a cover band that performed at
Lake Affect’s first year, will return for
the festivities. GB Leoghton also will
join the show.
The fun begins on Saturday, July
2, right at noon in Little Miller’s Bay.
The Pork Tornadoes will play first, followed
by GB Leoghton at 1 p.m. and
Damon Dotson at 2:15 p.m. to round
out the afternoon. The event is free to
the public and local vendors will sell
plenty of delicious food and beverages.

Village Northwest Unlimited is
ready to unveil another summer
celebration in Sheldon. Its annual
Independence Day Celebration
will kick off at 5 p.m. Friday, July 1.
The Village grounds will be transformed
once again into a carnival of
fun and festivities with games, inflatables,
music and food all evening
long.
It all leads up to one of the region’s
finest fireworks shows just after sunset.
A few new activities have been
added to the offerings to broaden the
event’s appeal to different age groups.
Laser tag will be available with inflatable
bunkers across a course the
size of a basketball court while other
inflatables such as the “wrecking ball”
are designed for older kids.
“The new activities along with a
younger country and pop musician
we think will have wide appeal,” said
Village director of development Lisa
Johnson. “The whole event is a kind
of a way to say ‘thank you’ to the community
for their support throughout
the year.”
That musician will once again be
Kelsey K from Moville, IA, who enjoyed
performing so much last year
that she wanted to come back just
as much as the Village was excited to
welcome her to the stage once again.
“She was great and we had a lot of
good feedback from people about her
performance,” Johnson said. “She was
really friendly with the crowd and just
so personable with anyone interested
in talking or asking for autographs.”
In addition to the music and the inflatables,
there will be several carnival
games, the Amazing Race scavenger
hunt competition and fire truck rides
with firemen from Ashton, Matlock,
Sanborn and Sheldon.
Some activities are free and some
require tickets that visitors can purchase
for 50 cents apiece.
Those interested in the Amazing
Race are encourage to preregister.
Proceeds from the tickets and the
food vendors go back to the Village to
help fund next year’s celebration.
“People have been coming to this
celebration since they were kids and
now they’re bringing their own. It’s
become a family tradition, something
that’s fun and successful because of
that family feel,” Johnson said. “It’s
right here in Sheldon with fireworks
that people talk about being as good
or better than anywhere else.”

Bullied as a teen for being overweight, Bob Stone (Dwayne Johnson) shows up to his high

Calling all car lovers
Cruising in the Iowa Great Lakes usually means that you are on the
water in a boat, but on Saturday, June 25, the Spirit Lake Chamber of
Commerce is inviting you to join in on a different kind of cruising. They’ll
be hosting the 19th annual Spirit Lake Chamber Cruise-In. It’s set to
take place in the evening and will be a delight for car lovers of all ages.
Hospers turns 125
The city of Hospers is celebrating an important birthday this year
and its citizens have been planning an event to mark the occasion for
months and months. The Hospers Quasquicentennial Celebration is
set to take place June 23-26. It will be a four-day celebration.
Treasure Village opens
Treasure Village Family Theatre and Mini Golf is open for its 44th
season. Even though they have been delighting children and their families
for over four decades, they are still committed to working on new
ideas of ways to have fun. There will be three shows on the stage
throughout the summer at Treasure Village Family Theatre.
Boji Blowout
For Tanner Lyons, owner of Ascension Disc Golf in Sheldon, IA,
learning to disc golf is a perfect opportunity for family fun and can be
a friendly competition no matter the age. Lyons is hosting a Disc Golf
event at the Dickinson County Nature Center in Kenue Park, June 23-
26. The four-day event offers a chance to learn the sport, compete
with a partner and even compete at Okoboji Gold Disc Golf Course.
