‘Highway Delite’ App has 

everything you Need for a 

Fun Road Trip 

Road trips are fun: You choose 

your own music, fellow travellers 

(or none), and snacks as you 

cruise on the highway. What’s 

not to love? But then, someone 

has to go to the loo, is hungry, or 

has motion sickness. You have 

no option but to keep driving, 

hoping you find a pit stop soon. 

That’s where ‘Highway Delite’, a 

mobile application comes in. 

The brainchild of Bengaluru-based 

travel buff Rajesh 

Ghatanatti, the app provides 

information on the nearest petrol 

pumps, restaurants, lodges, 

hotels, emergency contacts and 

even clean toilets on popular 

travel routes mostly in the five 

southern states. Up North, only 

the Indore-Ujjain and Delhi-Agra 

roads have been covered so far, 

and temporary establishments 

aren’t on the app. 

“I come from a defence background, 

so I’ve always liked to 

travel,” says the 33-year-old former 

consultant. The problems 

he faced on frequent work trips 

combined with his love for travelling 

led him develop Highway 

Delite. 

He quit his job last March to 

concentrate completely on his 

venture. Rajesh extensively travelled 

along NH4 and NH7 which 

connect Mysuru, Belagavi and 

Hyderabad to make his preliminary 

assessments.

A girl from a Bengaluru-based

one of the third rankers in the 

SSLC exams held during April

Tanvi Deshpande, a student 

of VVS Sardar Patel High School, 

is now ranked third in the state 

with an increase of four marks 

in her English paper after revaluation. 

She shares the third spot 

with 11 other students. 

Tanvi said she had applied 

for revaluation after being persuaded 

by the school authorities. 

“There were no State toppers in 

my school this year in SSLC. My 

teachers were confident that I 

would score more.” she said. 

On Saturday, she learnt 

she had secured 623 marks as 

against her earlier 619 and was 

ecstatic. She hopes that evaluators 

would carefully compare answer 

keys with the answer script 

so that it would avoid stressful 

moments for students. 

Restaurant Shut Down 

for Serving Idli with Dead 

Centipede 

The department for Food Safety 

has shut down the eating joint and have 

booked the owner for negligence. 

A 6-year-old girl from south Bangalore 

had to undergo a stomach wash as 

the idli she ate had a centipede in it. 

The child suddenly fell ill and that’s 

when the mother noticed the dead centipede 

in the food. 

The place from where the food was 

bought was a small restaurant in JP 

Nagar in Bangalore. 

The department for Food Safety

MAN ARRESTED FOR KILLING MOTHER-IN-LAW 

City police have arrested 

a man for killing his 

mother-in-law on 18th 

June in Basavangudi residential 

area. The man 

killed his mother-in-law 

for casting the superstitious 

act on his family.

wife Syed Unisa (54) 

were living in the Basavangudi 

residential area 

in Bengaluru. On 18th 

June, Azal Ahmed went 

for his daily work in the 

city and his wife Syed 

Unisa was alone at home. 

When Afzal returned 

from his work, he found 

the door locked. There 

was no response for his 

knock at the door from 

inside. He opened the 

door with his spare key 

and to his shock he saw 

his wife in the pool of 

blood. Her face was completely 

disfigured. The 

culprit has used knife to 

kill her. 

She was found dead in 

the locked house. Then 

Afzal Ahmed complained 

the police regarding the 

incident. After the investigation 

the police 

arrested his own son-inlaw,

Flyovers in Bengaluru a 

Boon or Bane? 

As Bengaluru’s traffic woes 

burgeon, the Karnataka government’s 

most recent solution to 

the problem is the decision to 

build yet another elevated road 

in the city, this time one of the 

longest in Asia, a 6.7 km long 

steel flyover from Hebbal to Chalukya 

circle. 

But even a brief look at studies 

of traffic in Bengaluru, such 

as the ‘Volume-Capacity Study 

on Flyovers of Bengaluru’, shows 

that vehicle density on the roads 

has increased by 8%-10% and 

traffic speeds have dropped by 

between 5-20 km per hour between 

2015 and 2016. 

What’s more, the study found 

that not only are the existing 

flyovers overburdened, but they 

haven’t been able to solve the 

congestion problem either.

On June 19, when the Father’s 

Day frenzy exploded on social 

media, it was easy to believe for 

the moment that the world was a 

collection of a zillion happy families, 

and nothing else. But, as always, 

what went unnoticed was

settled in London, married 

Sunitha in 2005 and the couple 

had a girl. By 2010, however, 

their differences had become 

non-negotiable and Sunitha 

came back to India with the 

baby. Ravi faced several charges, 

including dowry harassment. 

Eventually, legal commitments 

compelled him to move to Bengaluru.

STATE GOVERNMENT APOLOGISES TO HC 

The State government 

which had earlier claimed 

that no grace marks were 

awarded to II PU Mathematics 

students tendered 

an unconditional written 

apology to the High Court 

on Monday, for misleading 

the court by making 

wrong submission. On 

behalf of the state government, 

state advocate general, 

Madhusudan R Naik, 

tendered unconditional 

apology to the state high 

court for falsely telling the 

court earlier that grace 

marks had not been allotted 

to second PU students 

in mathematics subject in 

the examinations held this 

year. Moodbidri-based Bhuvana 

Jyothi Education Trust 

had filed public interest 

litigation in the state high 

court, questioning the government’s 

action in allotting 

grace marks for certain 

questions in mathematics 

paper. During the hearing, 

advocates representing the 

government and PU department 

had asserted that 

grace marks had not been 

given to students as it was 

found that none of the questions 

were out of syllabus to 

qualify for grace marks. The 

litigant trust thereafter verified 

this claim of the 

government advocates 

by securing copies of 

answer sheet of students. 

It came to know 

that grace marks had 

indeed been given for 

certain questions, even 

when only question 

numbers were mentioned 

by students. 

Therefore, the trust had 

approached the high court 

again with this information. 

The court was hearing an 

interlocutory application 

for recalling its earlier order 

dismissing a PIL against 

award of grace marks. Chief 

Justice S K Mukherjee and 

Justice Ravi Malimath said 

that no irresponsible submissions 

should be made 

in court without proper 

instructions from the government. 

The PIL was filed 

by Bhuvanjyothi Education 

Trust, a CBSE school located 

in Dakshina Kannada 

district saying, the awarding 

grace marks would 

adversely affect the CET 

rankings of students who 

have completed the course 

under CBSE syllabus. 

During the hearing, the 

advocates representing the 

government and PU department 

had asserted that 

grace marks had not been 

given to students as it was 

found that none of the questions 

were out of syllabus to 

qualify for grace marks. 

The litigant in the proceedings 

then verified the 

claim by securing copies of 

answer sheet of students. 

It proved the 

fact that grace marks 

had been awarded 

for question where 

the students had just 

mentioned the question 

numbers instead 

of answers. The High 

Court served notice on 

the State government and 

PU department for which 

an unconditional apology 

was tendered by the State

Man loses fingers as 

bomb used in fishing 

explodes 

A 28-year old man lost five 

of his fingers when a small 

country-bomb he was using 

to catch fish from a river exploded 

before he could throw 

it, police said on Tuesday. 

Suresh and his cousin of Vaniputhur 

village in Gobichettipalayam 

taluk were fishing 

in nearby Bhavani river using 

small sized country-bombs 

when the mishap occurred. 

As Suresh tried to throw a 

bomb into the river after 

lighting its wick, it exploded 

in his hand. All the five fingers 

on his right hand were blown 

away under the impact of the 

explosion and he suffered 

burns at various places of his 

body, police said. He had been 

admitted to a private hospital 

at Gobichettipalayam, Police 

said they had registered a 

case and were investigating 

from where the duo procured 

the bombs. Use of bombs in 

fishing is rampant in several 

areas, especially coastal regions 

and police had made 

seizures of the explosives in 

the past.

MAHA GOVERNOR, CM JOIN IN 

YOGA DAY CELEBRATIONS 

The second International Yoga Day was 

celebrated in Maharashtra on Tuesday with 

Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao and Chief 

Minister Devendra Fadnavis leading programmes 

in Mumbai. 

The Governor participated in a yoga programme 

at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday and also 

in a programme organised by Mumbai University. 

The chief minister took part in a programme 

organised at the Bandra Reclamation. 

Over 200 Mantralaya employees performed 

yoga at Mantralaya. 

The BMC conducted Upa Yoga programme 

across the city’s 390 Brihanmumbai 

Municipal Corporation schools with participation 

of over one lakh children below 

the age of 14. 

Upa Yoga teacher training for 800 teachers 

was also conducted. 

Upa Yoga involves practising a set of seven 

five-minute modules of exercise. 

Over 10,000 people, including Navy personnel 

and their families, took part in yoga 

camps organised by Western Naval Command 

in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, and Karnataka. 

Defence personnel and their families participated 

at programmes at the Colaba Military 

Station and on board aircraft carrier INS 

Viraat. 

Visually-impaired students from Victoria 

Memorial School for Blind, Tardeo, and 

Kamla Mehta Blind School, Dadar, also celebrated 

Yoga Day. 

A programme called ‘Yoga by the Bay’ was

of Sindh High Court has 

been abducted by unidentified 

armed men in Pakistan’s 

largest city and economic hub 

and police have detained five 

persons in this connection. 

Ovais Sajjad Shah, himself 

an advocate, was apparently 

abducted by armed men from 

outside a popular shopping 

mart in the posh Clifton area 

on Monday. 

Ovais, the son of Chief Justice 

Sajjad Ali Shah, had just 

come out of the mart when 

four armed men wearing 

peak caps emerged from a 

white car with a green number 

plate and forcibly took 

him away. Green number 

plates are reserved for government 

vehicles. 

DIG Police District South, 

Munir Ahmed Sheikh told 

the media that Ovais went 

missing after he left the Sindh 

High Court in the afternoon to 

meet a friend in Clifton. 

“We are looking at the 

CCTV cameras in the Clifton

Group (NSG) is not on 

the agenda of the grouping 

which began its plenary 

session in Seoul 

on Monday, the United 

States has called on the 

participating governments 

of the NSG to support 

India’s application. 

State Department 

spokesperson John Kirby 

said in a press briefing 

that the US has not 

changed its stand regarding 

India’s membership 

in the elite group. 

“Well, as you know, 

during Prime Minister 

Modi’s visit, the President 

welcomed India’s 

application to join the 

NSG and reaffirmed that 

India is ready for membership.

membership bid and 

asked for its admission

The decision on Indian 

membership will only 

be decided at the NSG 

plenary meeting in Seoul 

scheduled on June 23 

and 24. 

India claims that 21 

of 23 nations back its 

bid. The NSG works on 

unanimity and even one 

“no” vote can scuttle India’s 

bid. 

The US has strongly 

backed India’s bid and so 

have Britain, Russia and 

Switzerland. 

FBI VETERAN, A RARE OUTSIDER, TO LEAD

been named to head the 

US Border Patrol, a departure

He oversaw an extensive 

review of complaints 

of excessive use 

of force and employee 

misconduct. 

The National Border 

Patrol Council, which 

represents 18,000 

agents, said it was disappointed 

the commissioner 

passed over several 

highly qualified internal 

candidates, ending what 

it called a 92-year tradition 

of choosing a leader 

from within that dates 

back to the agency’s creation. 

“The Border Patrol 

has a unique mission 

that is reflected in its 

culture and we realise 

it will be difficult for an 

outsider to quickly gain 

the trust and respect of 

his subordinates,” the 

union said. “We hope 

that Chief Morgan will

BRITISH MAN CHARGED FOR 

ATTEMPTING TO KILL TRUMP 

A 19-year-old British 

man has been charged 

for trying to grab a police 

officer’s gun at a Donald 

Trump rally in Las Vegas 

in a bid to kill the 

presumptive Republican 

presidential nominee. 

According to a complaint 

filed in federal 

court in Nevada, Michael 

Sandford tried to disarm 

the officer at Saturday’s 

rally at the Mystere Theatre 

in the Treasure Island 

Casino before being 

overpowered. 

It said the young man 

told a Secret Service 

agent after his arrest 

that he had driven from 

California to Las Vegas 

“to kill Trump,” and had 

been to a range a day 

earlier to learn to shoot 

as he had never fired a 

gun before. 

“Sandford acknowledged 

that he would 

likely only be able to fire 

one to two rounds and 

stated he was convinced 

he would be killed by 

law enforcement during 

his attempt on Trump’s 

life,” the complaint said. 

It added that Sandford 

told investigators he had 

purchased tickets for a 

rally in Phoenix, where 

he “would try again to 

kill Trump” in the event 

his plan in Las Vegas 

failed.

RAJAN HOPING THE INFLATION FIGHT STAYS

central bank has been 

“wise to disregard” calls 

for deeper rate cuts.

double-digits during his 

three-year tenure, Rajan 

also took on the “highly- 

indebted industrialists” 

saying banks were 

charging them high 

rates due to a ‘premium’ 

for the risk they may not 

repay. 

Remaining his outspoken 

self even when 

he is on his exit path, Rajan 

said he would never 

abandon fight against 

inflation for growth 

and hoped that the next 

Governor and the new 

Monetary Policy Committee 

“will internalize 

the frameworks and 

institutions that have 

been set up, and should 

produce a low inflation 

future for India.” 

In his first public 

appearance after making 

public his decision 

against a second term 

when his current tenure 

ends on September 

4, Rajan put up a strong 

defense of his monetary 

policy stance. 

“The fact that inflation 

is fairly close to the 

upper bound of our target 

zone today suggests 

we have not been overly 

hawkish, and were wise 

to disregard advice in 

the past to cut more 

deeply,” he said while 

delivering a lecture at 

the Tata Institute of 

Fundamental Research 

here. 

Rajan, a monetary 

economist credited to 

have called the 2008 

global financial crisis, 

further argued that “if 

a critic believes interest 

rates are excessively 

high, he either has 

to argue the government-set 

inflation target 

should be higher 

than it is today, or that 

the RBI is excessively 

pessimistic about the 

path of future inflation. 

“He cannot have it 

both ways, want lower 

inflation as well as lower 

policy rates.” 

Stating that perceived 

short term trade-off 

between inflation and 

growth is not sustainable, 

as is the popular 

belief is, Rajan said a 

boom-and-bust cycle 

will not be good for the 

economy, because if the 

economy is producing 

at potential, we would 

quickly see shortages 

and a sharp rise in inflation. 

This means that 

a central bank can never 

abandon their inflation 

fighting objective. 

Exuding confidence 

that his successor “will 

stay the course” in setting 

up the new MPC 

into an institution, Rajan 

said a “low-inflation 

future” awaits India 

when the government 

will be able borrow at 

low rates, and will be 

able to extend the maturity 

of its debt. 

“The poor will not 

suffer disproportionately 

due to bouts of sharp 

inflation, and the middle 

class will not see its 

savings eroded. 

He also lauded the 

government for taking 

the “momentous 

step” of both setting 

a consumer price index-based 

inflation objective 

for the Reserve 

Bank as well as setting 

up an independent 

monetary policy committee 

(MPC). 

After a spate of personal 

attacks by a section 

of the ruling party 

and criticism for 

not lowering the rates 

enough to boost economy, 

Rajan on Saturday 

made the surprise 

announcement that 

he would not accept a 

second term. 

Stating that one 

can’t fool all the people 

all the time, Rajan 

said indeed there are 

some short-term benefits 

of a low interest 

rate regime by way of 

a short run trade-off 

between inflation and 

growth such as a boom 

in the stock markets, 

but “if the economy is 

producing at potential, 

we would quickly see 

shortages and a sharp 

rise in inflation, leading 

to a bout of boom and 

bust cycle in the economy. 

“But if contrary to expectations, 

the central 

bank is committed to 

keeping inflation under 

control, it may then be 

forced to raise interest 

rates substantially to 

offset that temporary 

growth. But the boom 

and bust (arising from 

this) will not be good 

for the economy, and 

average growth may be 

lower than if the cut had 

not taken place. 

“This is why modern 

economics also 

says there is no long 

run trade-off between 

growth and inflation 

and the best way for a 

central bank to ensure 

sustainable growth is 

to keep demand close to 

potential supply so that 

inflation remains moderate, 

and the other factors 

that drive growth, 

such as good governance, 

can take center 

stage” Rajan argued. 

At the same time Rajan 

was quick to add 

that the RBI does not 

focus on inflation to the 

exclusion of growth. If 

inflation rises sharply, 

say due to a sharp rise 

in oil prices, it would 

not be sensible for a 

central bank to bring 

inflation within its target 

band immediately 

by raising interest rates 

so high as to kill all economic 

activity. 

Rajan said India had 

got used to decades of 

moderate to high inflation, 

leading to industrialists 

and governments 

paying negative real 

interest rates and the 

burden of the hidden inflation 

tax falling on the 

middle class saver and 

the poor.

a “conscious decision” 

not repeating himself in 

‘chocolate-boy roles’. 

It was a conscious decision 

to not to go back 

to chocolate boy roles. I 

don’t want to get stuck 

to any image,” Jimmy

“I am glad I did that 

(not stuck to one kind of 

role) as I got the opportunity

ORIGINAL ‘STAR TREK’ ACTOR PAYS TRIBUTE TO ANTON 

“Star Trek” stalwart 

Walter Koenig has paid 

a touching tribute to his 

film counterpart Anton 

Yelchin following the 

young actor’s untimely 

passing. 

Yelchin, 27, was killed 

after his Jeep rolled 

down his driveway and 

crushed him against a 

brick pillar at his San 

Fernando Valley home 

in California on Sunday, 

according to an 

entertainment website. 

Yelchin played the character 

of Pavel Chekov 

in the three recent film 

versions of the sci-fi 

story. 

Koenig, who played 

Chekov in the 1960s series 

and its subsequent 

films, offered his condolences 

saying, “We 

spoke on a sound stage 

for about two hours. His 

reputation as an artist 

preceded him, however. 

I knew I was in the 

presence of a gifted performer. 

“What I learned that 

day was how bright 

and sensitive he was. I 

walked away thinking 

- this is a good person. 

My heart goes out to 

his mother and father. I 

know what you’re going 

through.” 

Koenig went through 

his own shocking tragedy 

in 2010, after his 

actor son, Andrew, was 

found dead in a Canadian
