Us soldiers detained over immigrant
smuggling operation
U.S. authorities are investigating an illegal immigrantion smuggling operation allegedly run by active
duty military soldiers out of the Ft. Bliss U.S. Army post in El Paso, Texas. Ft. Bliss is headquarters for
El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC), a federal tactical operational intelligence center. According to
sources and documents, two U.S. soldiers, Marco Antonio Nava, Jr. and Joseph Cleveland, were arrested
last Saturday by border patrol officers at Falfurias, Texas Border Patrol Station Checkpoint attempting to
smuggle two Mexican citizens into the U.S. The Mexicans were riding in the back seat of the car. Upon
their arrest, the soldiers, who were not in uniform at the time, informed Border Patrol agents they are
part of the 377 TC Company at Ft. Bliss. "We are aware that two Fort Bliss Soldiers have been arrested,"
Mike Brantley, a spokesman for Fort Bliss, said. "We can confirm they are both assigned to the 377
Transportation Company here; however, as this is an ongoing investigation we cannot comment further."
Former naval commander
laments smaller, weaker
Canadian navy
In speech that clearly serves as warning for the
Trudeau government, the incoming deputy
commander of the Canadian military delivered
a harsh critique of political and bureaucratic
indecision and its harm for the navy. Over the
last few years, age and mechanical reliability
forced the military to retire its two supply ships and two command destroyers — which also
provide anti-aircraft defence for the fleet. In both cases, new ships are still on the drawing
board. "It's important to keep in mind that the situation we had to manage was completely
avoidable," said Norman. Norman was referring to the previous Conservative government's
decision to scrap a program to replace the navy's supply ships and the foot-dragging that has
plagued the frigate-replacement program. But Norman's comments Thursday could also be
applied to the Trudeau government's political gyrations over replacing the air force's CF-18s.
Veteran critisized
for using veterans
parking space
A woman who served in the
Navy for eight years and parked
in a spot marked for veterans
was surprised to find a hand
written note criticizing her
when she returned to her car.
Rebecca Landis Hayes said the
incident happened at the Harris
Teeter grocery store within the
Coddle Creek Shopping Center
in North Carolina on Monday.
After Hayes finished up her
errands about 30 minutes later,
she saw the small piece of white
paper that was placed under her
windshield wiper. 'At first, I
thought someone had left a note
because they hit my car or
something like that,' She said
that she pulled over thinking
that she needed to call someone
to swap insurance information,
but started to cry while reading
the note. It accused her of
abusing the privilege to park in
the veteran spot at the store.
'This parking is for Veterans,
lady. Learn to read and have
some respect,' the note, which
she posted a photo of on
Facebook, reads. She told the
station that she thinks the note
was left on her car because she
is a woman and at the time
didn't fit the 'stereotype' of a
veteran in her business-casual
attire. 'Veterans come in all
shapes, sizes, genders and
colors,' Hayes told WBTV.
'More veterans don't fit that
stereotype than do.' She shared
that her husband, who is a
veteran of the US Army, has
parked in the same spot before
and has never received a note
like hers. Instead, he gets a
'thank you for your service'
comment from people when he
gets out of his vehicle at the
store. In sharing the photo of
the note on Facebook, Hayes
wrote: 'I know I parked in one
of the Veteran Parking spaces
today, it was hot. Read more.
