MONHEGAN ISLAND
PHOTO INVITATIONAL 2016
AIMONE STUDIOS AT THE CARINA HOUSE
MONHEGAN, MAINE, MAY 27 - JUNE 5
25 Oak Street, Rockland, Maine, June 30 - July 10

Welcome to the 2016 Monhegan Island
Photo invitational. This show inaugurates
the Monhegan island Photo Festival
hosted by Aimone Studios at The
Carina House. Organized by David and
Steven Aimone, The exhibition is on view
from May 27-June 5, 2016 before traveling
to 25 oak street in Rockland, Maine
from June 30-July 10.
the 2016 invitational features work by
noted photographers Penny Hoey, jason
philbrook, j michael sullivan, David
Aimone, and steven aimone.
Steven and katherine Aimone purchased
the iconic, wood-framed building known as
The Carina House in late 2007 where they
have since had painting studios. Steven and
david Aimone share time there each year,
photographing the island's enormously
diverse and beautiful landscape.
Monhegan is recognized as a painter's and
bird-watcher's paradise, and it is also a
photographer's dreamscape. Its rich
history includes the works of Bertrand
Wentworth, Ralph Steiner, Lorimer
Brackett, and Arthur Wayland Cutting.
in more recent history are well-known
photograhphers such as John Paul
Caponigro, Bryan Hitchcock, Peter
Ralston, Amy Toensing, and others.
contemporary photography has a vital
presence on the island. In the summer
and fall, visitors arrive with photography
equipment and spend days studying the
island's many possibilities. highly dedicated
bird watchers document their sightings
photographically during the spring and
fall, and members of the winter community
photograph the island year-round.
with the advent of smart-phone cameras,
nearly everyone that comes to the island
participates in photographing their
experiences in one form or another.
In May 2015, the Carina House presented
"From Maine to Montepulciano:
Photographic Responses to timeless
places," featuring David and Steven's work.
because of its success, they began to
brainstorm ways to expand and nurture
the photographic community on the island.
The idea of an annual Photo Festival came
up in talks, and They decided to launch the
first year with the invitational
exhibition that you see here.
The Aimones are exploring ways to make
the Monhegan island Photo festival an
annual event to encourage the
experience and practice of photography
on the island. We hope you enjoy this
inaugual exhibition and catalogue,
and contribute your own interpretations
to the island's photographic lineage.

I consider myself very fortunate to be able to return to Monhegan Island often, even if for relatively short periods of
time. Monhegan is a small island, but with such a variety of environments and moods to be explored by the many artists
who work there. Returning to the same but ever-changing subjects and scenes on the island, over time, enables me to
evolve with both technical and artistic aspects of image-making on the island.
My father, Jack Sullivan Jr., photographed Monhegan Island in the summer of
1975 traveling with a group of fellow photographers from the Alpha photo
group of Washington D.C. Back then very few outside of Maine had even heard
of Monhegan. His dedication to capturing "the essence" of a place largely
inspired me to become a professional photographer in 1977. I dedicate these
images to his memory.
owls head, me
I've been making quick visits to
Monhegan for work for years
but couldn't sneak in much time
for photography on the island.
I was familiar with the island,
but not familiar in the way intentional
photography connects
me to a place. Taking the time to
photograph here has shown me
Monhegan has the wildness and
energy that we expect to find on
the coast of Maine, but turned up
to 11. The rocks, woods, sky, and
ocean I love seem familiar, but
much much more intense away
from the mainland. I can manage
to show little excerpts of this
boldness in photographs.
I fell in love with Monhegan
as the island came into view
from the ferry, upon my first
visit in 2013. Each step taken
and moment spent on Monhegan
since that first arrival
has only served to deepen my
attachment. There is truly
no other place like it, with or
without my camera. To be able
to practice my craft in such
a healing and rejunvenating
environment is truly a dream
come true....
Monhegan Island, maine
The experience of the island
brings about an awareness that
internal and external nature
are one-in-the-same. sitting
on the backside of the island,
time stops and the universal is
accessed.
It is easier to become present
here, to lose yourself while
becoming aware of something
deeper. The landscape embodies
both dark and light; polarities
that comprise the whole.
the ocean, forests, and minutae
can be richly and powerfully
experienced, but never fully
understood. I was blessed to
be introduced to Monhegan 40
years ago, and It is always a
blessing to return.
Monhegan island, Maine
Monhegan is a storied, 500-acre island
located 10 miles from the mainland. It
features a varied landscape replete with
the highest cliffs on the eastern seaboard
to the east, a dense spruce forest
in the interior, wetlands, and a harbor
between it and neighboring Manana
island.
The Carina House was built in the 1920s,
and renovations were done in the 1970s.
it is located in the heart of the Monhegan
village, directly across from
the meadow on one side and behind the
island inn.
originally a post office, the building
has since served as a care-taker's cottage,
the home and studio of fiber artist
robert semple, a grocery store, and the
original home to Marc: the monhegan
artist's residency program.
In all of its incarnations, the Carina
house has been an integral part of the
island community. currently owned by
katherine and steven aimone, it serves as
studios, exhibition space, and their residence
during the summer and fall.
a mile and a half long and a half a mile
wide, the island features 17 miles of
hiking trails. much of the island remains
virtually untouched, thanks to a land
preserve founded in 1954 by Ted edison
and maintained by Monhegan Associates.
Monhegan has a year-round
population of 65. including summer
homes and inns, the island's summer
population can reach 500. monhegan
has no paved roads or streetlights, and
only trucks are allowed for year-round
islanders. Monhegan's K-8 schoolhouse
and non-denominational church are its
meeting and activity centers.
Known as "the artists' island," Monhegan
has served as inspiration for a host of
great american painters: Edward Hopper,
George Bellows, Rockwell Kent, robert
henri, Abraham Bogdanove, eric hudson,
joseph DiMartini, Ruben Tam, James
fitzgerald, Lynn Drexler, Jamie Wyeth,
