FIELD EVALUATION OF POWER GENERATION & CONVERSION EQUIPMENT
by András Szende
Power generation and conversion equipment has
always been the forefront in industrial applications.
Since it has been around for a long time and has
been a steady field with gradual changes, the
related regulations have also been relatively steady.
Power generation using oil or gas is common due
to the still relatively low price and availability of the
power source and also inexpensive and flexible
systems available today. A gas turbine powered
station may satisfy urgent power needs for small or
large communities. Standby systems, solar stations, battery backup solutions using more
environmentally friendly power generation methods are used in hospitals, data centers,
or production facilities where power loss may be a critical problem. All installations need
to meet local building codes and electrical safety requirements, so the NEC and multiple
standards may apply for parts of the installations. There are control panels, electrical
power generation, storage and conversion components, all with specific distinct safety
codes, all of which are typically field evaluated and labeled.
Power conversion components also come in many flavors and can be extremely versatile.
A simple “brick” 24 V power supply is a standard item in an installation, expected to be
listed and not field labeled. A large motor control center, an electric car charging station
or a power station precipitator power supply are all very complex installations, which
often need to be evaluated on site as a field inspection with detailed product review and
some specific testing. Safety standards for these power supplies vary, and need to be
well followed to guarantee safety. TUV Rheinland can be trusted with good engineering
knowledge and experience to inspect them.
