YOUR SEARCH BEGINS AT
Mokena’s 2016
Fourth of July
parade features
American landmarks
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
After the sun set on Sunday,
July 3, P.J. Bickett set
out to claim a spot for the
Mokena Chamber of Commerce’s
annual Fourth of
July parade.
“We always set up right
here; it’s the perfect spot,”
said P.J.’s wife, Reneé Bickett,
while waiting for the parade
to step off on Monday,
July 4.
Themed America’s Great
Landmarks, the parade drew
hundreds of attendees from
communities near and far.
With their three sons, P.J.
and Reneé have been attending
the parade along
with their friends and their
families for the past several
years, they said. Preparing
for anything the weather
might have in store, the family
set up a portable awning/
tent and set out a blanket for
the children to sit and play
before the parade began.
“Although [the parade] is
sponsored by the chamber, it
has grown into an event that
reaches all the surrounding
communities, and it’s their
tradition, too,” said Cindy
Gamboa, the chamber’s
chairperson for the event.
“It’s the largest parade in the
south suburbs. It’s a full community
tradition. Just like all
of us go to Fall Fest in Frankfort,
all of the communities
come here to celebrate [the
Fourth of July] with us.”
According to Gamboa, no
one is certain how long the
parade has been a part of the
community’s history.
“We’ve always tried to
Bagpipers from The Band of Brothers Pipes and Drums
lead the way Monday, July 4, at the Fourth of July parade in
Mokena. Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
Young attendees (left to right) Robby Dauphinais, John
Paul Dauphinais and Sara Everett enjoy popcorn before the
Fourth of July parade.
figure that out,” she said.
“We have records dating
back to the 1950s.”
Regardless, the parade has
become a tradition for many.
Crystal Collins and her husband,
Peter Collins, said this
was their 19th year attending
the parade.
“Our son is 19; he was
born in May, and we started
coming that year,” Crystal
said. “It’s a great sense of
community, and a great parade.
… There’s usually always
something new to see.”
At 7:30 a.m., Peter was
out in front of Aurelio’s Pizza
on Wolf Road setting up a
mock theater for the parade
with four portable awnings/
tents and lawn chairs placed
in precise rows underneath.
Not alone, Tim Stoub, a
resident of Peotone who has
attended the event with the
Collins family for the past 10
years, also included a Pack
‘n Play and other children’s
items for his five children.
“It all started with Peter
and Crystal Collins; they are
residents of Mokena, and we
latched on to them,” Stoub
Serving up family fun, Italian food
Annual Festa
Italiana returning for
third year in Mokena
Amanda Jarzynski, Editor
The Festa Italiana event in
Mokena caused a sensation
three years ago when it was
first introduced as a celebration
of the feast of Our Lady
of Mount Carmel.
Nearly 1,000 people attended
the fun-filled day of
prayer, entertainment and
authentic Italian food. The
event grew even more in
popularity last year when
1,400 people attended.
This year, the event is to
be held on Sunday, July 17,
on Front Street and Vince
DiFiore, president of Festa
Italia, is hoping to have
somewhere around 2,000 attendees.
“We welcome people
from all nationalities and denominations
to come to the
event,” DiFiore said. “It’s a
good time, there’s excellent
food and it’s just a very nice
family event. There will be
beer and wine sales along
with all kinds of stuff for the
kids.”
The event is to kick off at
11 a.m. at Mokena Middle
School where a procession
to honor Our Lady of
Mount Carmel will start.
Attendees are encouraged
to park their car in the
school lot while they participate
in the event.
DiFiore said that the procession
will include prayers
and hymns while participants
make their way to
Front Street and the waiting
food and entertainment.
While there will be lots of
freshly-made Italian dishes,
there will also be American
food such as hot dogs and
burgers for the children
who may not like the other
meals.
A 140 foot tents is to be set
up for people not only to eat
Larry Rea (left), of Orland Park, helps his daughter Jillian
under, but to possibly take
shelter from any inclement
weather. DiFiore is confident,
though, that the weather
should not be an issue on
the day of the event.
As in previous years, there
are to be many different activities
and entertainment for
attendees of all ages to enjoy
while they eat. DiFiore said
that from 12:30-9 p.m. there
will be many groups of musicians
and even opera singers
giving performances.
There will be activities for
teens and pre-teens including
music to dance to and a
“teen night” event.
For the smaller children,
there are many activities
scheduled for the event including
a bounce house and
a visit from Jim Nesci and
his Cold-Blooded Creatures.
Mokena Village Board
Trustees unanimously vote to approve fiscal year 2017 budget
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
Village of Mokena officials
were able to do the very
thing state officials have
been gridlocked over the last
year — pass a budget.
Mokena trustees voted
5-0 on June 27, to pass the
Village’s fiscal year 2017
budget, with Mayor Frank
Fleischer voting yes and
trustees Debbie Engler and
Joseph Siwinski absent.
The fiscal year 2017 budget
calls for revenues of approximately
$23.77 million
and expenditures of approximately
$24.47 million. With
an opening fund balance of
$40.62 million, Village staff
projects it will close fiscal
year 2017 with an ending
fund balance of approximately
$39.93 million.
“With respect to revenues
from fiscal year 2016
to fiscal year 2017, there is
an anticipated increase of
$834,960, or 3.64 percent,”
Village Administrator John
Tomasoski said. “With respect
to expenses, from fiscal
year 2016 to fiscal year
2017, you’ll see a decrease
of $404,022, or 1.62 percent.
“The expenses are higher
than the revenues, but … the
difference really is the continuation
of an aggressive
infrastructure program.”
Tomasoski also said that
the Village wound up with a
positive net operating result
of $1.88 million in the general
fund to close fiscal year
2016.
“The Village took what I
think was the right conservative
stance with all the
uncertainties at the state
level to budget for 50 percent
of the Local Governmental
Distributive Fund
payment,” he said. “As it
played out with the budget
impasse, and I’d say the
non-decisions being made
Round It Up
Recaping the events of the June 27 Mokena Village
Board Meeting.
• Trustees voted 5-0 to approve a contract with H
and H Electric in the amount of $19,231.20 for traffic
signal maintenance.
• Trustees also voted 5-0 to award a contract to
Denler, Inc. of Mokena in the amount of $42,670 to
route and seal 69,000 feet of pavement cracks as part
of the pavement routing and sealing program for fiscal
year 2017.
• The Village Board members also awarded a contract
to Oak Lawn Blacktop of Mokena in an amount not
to exceed $80,000 for approximately 40,000 square
yards of patching.
• Trustees also voted 5-0 to approve contracts with
Davis Concrete Construction Co. of Alsip for concrete
pavement patching, and Whiteline Construction of
Chicago for the sidewalk, curbing and gutter repair
programs.
• After executive session, trustees also voted to
reclassify the position of building and planning
specialist to building, planning and economic
development specialist, and approve compensation
for it as a Grade 14 level. Matthew Ziska was then
approved for the position at a salary of $66,762.
at the state level, we received
100 percent of that
[budgeted] number. The
second big component is
that the sales tax came in
higher than anticipated.”
He also credited the Village’s
conservative budgeting
practices.
The 2017 fiscal year budget
General Fund calls for
revenues of approximately
$9.464 million and expenditures
of $9.459 million. The
opening fiscal year balance
of $3.65 million will increase
to $3.66 million.
The Water Operating Fund
calls for a fiscal year 2017
budget of $4.64 million in
revenues and $4.97 million
in expenses. The fund balance
is anticipated to open
the fiscal year at $1.05 million
and end at $720,000, a
decrease of about $333,000.
The Sewer Operating
Fund for fiscal year 2017
calls for approximately
$1.94 million in revenue and
$1.98 million in expenses,
with the fund decreasing its
end-of-fiscal-year balance
by about $38,000 for a total
of $516,000.
Tomasoski listed five key
components to a solid budgeting
process — which began
in early January — with
the last one listed as “always
be prepared.”
“We’re kind of stealing
the Boy Scout motto here,
but it’s very applicable,” he
said. “We utilize a conservative
thought process and
approach, and I decided
to highlight [this one] because
it’s getting a lot of
talk these days, especially
with the uncertainties of
the state.”
He said the budget impasse
at the state level has led to
a lot of uncertainty for local
governments. But he also
said that Mokena is doing
well, in large part thanks to
the past practices of the former
Village Administrator
and the actions of the board.
The Village also is seeing
higher sales tax revenue.
“The local sales tax is at
an all-time high, the general
fund operating position is in
its best shape ever and our
pensions are funded well,”
he said. “The Village is continuing
to do more with less,
and our cash reserves minimize
uncontrollable risk.”
Fleischer thanked Tomasoski
for the presentation,
as well as for bringing up
the work that was previously
done to set up Mokena’s
positive financial position.
“This doesn’t happen by
accident, and it doesn’t happen
overnight,” Fleischer
said. “A lot of people have
gotten us here.”
Trustee John Mazzorana
said a big part of the budgeting
process is understanding
and controlling costs, and
not living outside of the Village’s
means.
“Fortunately, we don’t do
that here at the Village —
we know what our revenues
are, and by keeping our costs
down, we’re able to have
these kinds of budgets and
these kinds of carryovers
[from previous budgets],” he
said.
Also during the meeting,
trustees voted 5-0 to award
a contract with P.T. Ferro in
the amount of $992,700 to
patch and resurface approximately
5 miles of streets for
the annual maintenance program.
This year’s program
will include roads in Marley
Creek, Creekview West
and McCarthy Landings, as
well as Revere Road, Union
Street, Greenview Avenue,
Roberts Road and 197th
Engineer Paul Pearson.
He said the bid from
P.T. Ferro — originally
$730,072.38 for about 4
miles — came in 33 percent
less than what was budgeted
for the project. Therefore, he
recommended extending the
project to include nearly another
mile of roadways.
Amanda Jarzynski, Editor
The Mokena Community
Park District’s Board
of Commissioners held their
regularly scheduled meeting
June 28 at The Oaks Fitness
Center to discuss proposed
changes to The Oaks Expansion
order.
Commissioner Patrick
Markham was the only one
absent. The board also has
VENDORS WANTED
22ND CENTURY MEDIA PRESENTS
yet to appoint a new Executive
Director.
“We have 11 candidates
who’ve applied for the position,”
said Vice President
George McJimpsey. “At
least 4 or 5 of them are very
well qualified, the rest are
partially qualified.”
The board discussed the
matter further when they adjourned
to executive session.
McJimpsey said the board’s
next step is to check the references
of their top choices.
They are hoping to fill this
position as soon as possible.
In the meantime, the board
heard and unanimously approved
of two changes to The
Oaks expansion project by
Henry Brothers. The first was
to add an additional amount
of $12,554.08 to the project
budget for the use of architectural
concrete painting.
This decision was approved
by a 5-0 vote; Commissioner
Dennis Bagdon chose to abstain
from the vote.
The second change was
for an additional amount
of $6,960.80 to go towards
the construction of grating
around existing trees within
the project. This was approved
by a vote of 6-0 by
the board.
The board also discussed
the replacement of one of
their tractors as the annual
lease was up for renewal,
said President Mike Bartos.
It was recommended to the
board that their 2015 equipment
be purchased by an
$4,934 amount and a newer,
2017 tractor be leased by an
amount of $3,840. The board
approved these recommendations
by a unanimous vote
of 6-0.
The board was also reminded
of several summer
events coming up in the
month of July. This included
another free concert in the
park on July 10, this time by
the band “Rick Lindy and the
Wild Ones.” The annual Flea
Market is to be held 8 a.m.-2
p.m. July 17, at Main Park.
Lastly, another free movie
night is to be held July 29 at
Main Park. The movie is to
be “Aladdin” and will begin
at dusk.
Michael Ivey, Editorial Intern
In Frankfort, on the corner
of Route 30 and Wolf Road,
two new park benches have
been placed. Residents can
use these benches to cool
off during a hot summer day,
and they have one person to
thank for that.
Jared Candelaria, a member
of the Boy Scouts of
America, installed the two
park benches as part of his
Eagle Scout project. Candelaria
is a native of Tinley
Park and an upcoming senior
student at Lincoln Way-East
High School.
He also refurbished and
sold a bike rack for his project.
By completing both
tasks, Candelaria earned the
highest rank attainable for
members of the Boy Scouts.
“It’s been a really long
journey for me,” Candelaria
said. “Once I was finally
able to finish this, it was
a great thing for me to do.
I felt really accomplished
when everything was done.”
Candelaria’s Court of
Honor ceremony was held
on June 18, and he was also
recognized at the Frankfort
Township Board of Trustees
meeting on June 27. He
said that for his Eagle Scout
project, he wanted to create
something that people would
use every day.
“I’ve actually seen people
using the benches,” Candelaria
said. “I wanted to install
something that the community
would get good use
out of.”
The rank of Eagle Scout
takes years for scouts to
obtain and is awarded after
a lengthy review process.
Scouts also must have at
least 21 merit badges in order
to be considered for an
Eagle Scout badge.
Notable people who have
earned the rank of Eagle
Scout include former U.S.
President Gerald Ford, astronaut
Neil Armstrong and
film director Steven Spielberg,
according to the US
Scouting Service Project
website. Candelaria said one
of the hardest things he encountered
during his time as
a Boy Scout was completing
his Eagle Scout project.
“A lot of people think it’s
just installing something,”
Candelaria said. “There’s actually
a lot of paperwork behind
it and it was hard for me
to stay motivated throughout
that. But once I did, it was
very rewarding.”
Candelaria said he has enjoyed
his time being a member
of the Boy Scouts and
has many fond memories
of Boy Scout trips, like going
kayaking for a week at
the Apostle Islands National
Lakeshore in Wisconsin.
“There was no running
water, no electricity, and we
had to bring all of our gear
with us,” Candelaria said. “It
was a really fun time to bond
with my friends and have
fun.”
Candelaria said many of
his friends are fellow Boy
Scouts. He also said he has
learned many leadership
Crystal said that they began
bringing the tents several
years ago when it was
very hot out, but now it has
become their tradition.
“We have a lot of people
come out now,” she said.
“It’s grown every year, and
more people keep coming.”
This year, the parade again
began with a riderless horse
tribute, which was escorted
by The Band of Brothers
Pipes and Drums. The tribute
has been added to the
parade in honor of fallen
“It’s so important to remember
why we’re here and
those who are serving and
Additionally, the parade
offered the inaugural public
Band, as well as an encore
performance from the
Maertin Heating and Cooling
Drill Team.
“I’m very happy the
Maertin Drill Team is back;
they’re great,” Crystal said.
“The first question people
ask about the parade is: What
day is it?” Gamboa said.
“And it’s on the Fourth of
July, of course. The second
question is: Will the Maertin
Heating and Cooling Drill
Team be there?”
After a several-year-long
hiatus, the drill team performed
in the parade to celebrate
the life of Jeff Maertin,
who formed the drill team,
Gamboa said. The team
also was this year’s grand
marshal, and is the mostrequested
entry in the parade
each year, according to a
statement from the chamber.
New trees need patience, attention to thrive
Submitted by the Village of
Mokena
Much like a young child,
that new tree planted in your
parkway needs a lot of patience
and attention.
Phil Graf of Graf Tree
Care, the Village of Mokena’s
consulting arborist, says
patience is key when getting
newly planted trees established.
Shortly after planting,
a tree can become partially--
or even fully-- defoliated due
to transplant shock. Graf advises
residents to be patient
and let the tree attempt to leaf
out again on its own. Residents
can help during this
transition period by properly
watering the tree following
the instructions provided in
the Village’s “Tips for New
Trees” publication, which is
available online at www.mokena.org
or in hard copy at
Village Hall.
For those residents with
limited time, Graf suggests
investing in a slow-release
drip irrigation watering bag.
Residents need simply fill
the bag once a week and let
it drip irrigate the tree.
If it ultimately becomes
apparent that a newly planted
tree is not going to survive,
Graf cautions that now is not
the time to replace it. The
hot and dry conditions typically
encountered in July and
August—and sometimes in
early September as well—are
not conducive to a successful
replacement planting. Moreover,
good available nursery
stock for replacements is often
lacking during this period
of time. Graf advises that the
best available window for the
tree to be replaced is during
the cooler, more favorable
months of October and November,
coinciding with the
Village’s regular autumn tree
planting cycle.
Residents can report any
dead trees to the Village
by calling (708) 479-3900.
Upon documentation by Village
staff, these trees will
be replaced later this year
under a two year warranty
provided by the Village’s
tree planting contractor, The
Fields on Caton Farm.

Matt’s Old Mokena
Music to make Mokena a brighter place to be
Matt Galik
Contributing Columnist
With a fun-filled
calendar, summer
in Mokena means
levity. Festivity is in the air,
and the neighborhood spirit
truly shines. Turning back
time to the heady days of
Teddy Roosevelt and the
Progressive Era in America,
an integral part of the village’s
summertime cheer
was the Mokena Cornet
Band. Made up entirely of
hometown gents, the brass
band and its steady rhythm
were very active in and
around town in the first
years of the 20th century.
Carrying their name from
a small, trumpet-like instrument,
the beginnings of the
band are nebulous, although
the group was in existence
by 1898, when a succinct
blurb in the Joliet Weekly
News announced the hosting
of a Labor Day picnic in
town by the musicians. Over
the next year, the Mokena
Cornet Band was in high
demand, playing three dates
within one week at home,
in Frankfort, and at the
county seat. Commenting on
their hustle, a local reporter
vouched that the band “gets
to the front amid the closest
kind of competition.” The
Cornet Band drew crowds
with their performances,
and although none of their
playlists are known to still
exist, a 1901 listener called
them “dispensers of gladsome
music”. To hone their
skills, the men practiced at
Front Street’s Liess Hall,
and when not on the road,
the musicians played local
barn dances and could even
be counted on to serenade
Mokena’s newlyweds.
The body of the Cornet
Band numbered around
14 gents, all representing
a cross-section of talented
Mokenians. While members
such as Frank Knudson and
Joe Kohl were farmers, other
musicians such as Erhard
Oswald and Paul Rinke were
town butcher and rural mail
carrier, respectively. While
their musical notes were
pleasing to the ears, they also
cut dashing, regal figures
in their uniforms, which
consisted of red jackets and
white trousers. Years later,
village historian Florence
Pitman would fondly call
the band “a snappy group”.
Lost to time is whether or
not the men received any
regular pay for their work, or
if their efforts were strictly
voluntary. However, a 1903
holiday concert in Joliet
rewarded them with the tidy
sum of $4.00 each.
A date on the band’s
yearly calendar above all
others was Independence
Day. A representative example
of their brand of fun
was the 4th of July, 1901,
when they set up shop at
Huwiler’s Grove just south
of town. Having the foresight
to section off part of
the grounds under a canvas
shade, the day was kicked
off with various games in the
afternoon, after which patriotic
tunes and dancing began
in earnest. The musicians
earned themselves a sumptuous
crowd, and in the words
of a town scribe, “The band
never did better, and that is
saying a good deal.”
They were not without
competition, however. In
1903, another bunch of
Mokena musicians formed
together, calling themselves
the Twentieth Century Band.
Through the assorted bits of
knowledge that have survived
over the years, it seems that a
feud developed between this
new group and the Cornet
Band, possibly in relation to
the Cornet Band’s acquisition
of a handful of the Twentieth
Century’s members in
1903. Barbs between the two
groups of entertainers were
Looking northwest towards Front Street, the Mokena
The Mokena Cornet Band
dissolved in 1904, but within
a month was back after a
“reorganization”, continuing
to delight the village until
they faded into history. July
4th was a moment when the
band shone for their fellow
has huge significance as part
of our community’s summer
would be proud of us.
From THE TINLEY JUNCTION
American Legion event
welcomes home all veterans
After a three-year tour of
France, Holland and Germany
as an Army medic in
World War II, including a
stint under Gen. George Patton,
Rich Olund came home
in 1946, and it was not to a
hero’s welcome.
“When I came home, I
walked from Union Station
all the way to Michigan Avenue
with my duffel bag,”
the 91-year-old Palos Park
resident said. “My family
didn’t even know I was coming
home.”
That homecoming was like
a Rockwell painting compared
to what Tinley Park’s
Robert Baisa faced more than
20 years later after serving in
the Navy in Vietnam. Vietnam
vets were generally met
with indifference or hostility.
Decades later, Olund, Baisa
and many other area veterans
were welcomed home properly
on June 25 at an event
at American Legion Post 615
in Tinley Park. There were
speeches given, certificates
handed out, free food and music
from the Antique Cadillacs
during the Welcome Home to
All Veteran’s Celebration.
Tino Lettieri, a Legion
member, organized the event,
and he was beaming and
pointing out several guests
who served during the event.
Tinley Park’s John Joyce
was one of several volunteers
cooking meat on the
grill for the event. He has
been a Legion member for
10 years. He did not serve,
but his father, Pete, and other
members of his family did.
“It’s awesome,” Joyce
said. “We love doing this.
It’s a great opportunity for us
to give back to the service.
We’re all happy to help. It’s
a team effort.”
New Frankfort Park District
executive director plans to
analyze, bolster amenities
at parks
Gina Hassett is in the
business of making lifelong
memories.
Family reunions, youth
baseball games, Fourth of
July fireworks shows — she
gets to be a part of it all as
Frankfort Park District’s
newest executive director, a
role she adopted last month.
Hassett, who lives in the
Mount Greenwood neighborhood
on Chicago’s southwest
side, has been a part of park
district communities since
she was 5 years old and grew
up attending programs at the
Homewood Flossmoor Park
District. For eight years, she
also served as the director of
parks and recreation for the
Village of Hinsdale, where
she sharpened her skills in
project management, development
of intergovernmental
partnerships and long-range
planning.
She said her experience
in the field, along with her
passion to provide recreation
services, helped prepare her
for the new position.
“I was seeking to work
for an agency that is part
of the community,” Hassett
said. “Right away, I knew
Frankfort would provide me
that opportunity. The charm
of a historic downtown district
along [with] ongoing
development makes for an
outstanding community environment.”
For students of Lincoln-Way
Community
High School District
210, moving to different
high schools this fall could
be a tough transition. New
surroundings, classmates
and teachers all present opportunities
for different interactions,
but for the most
part the toughest challenge
may be finding new friends.
This isn’t anything similar
to junior high students
going into high school.
Some of these students are
entering their senior year at
a different school, like Joey
DiNaso, who is transferring
from Lincoln-Way East to
Lincoln-Way Central.
However, luckily for
NFYN
From Page 16
The beauty of sports
him, he and other transferring
athletes will have an
easier transition than many
others in the district due to
sports. With summer sports
and camps in full swing,
these activities provide a
bridge for the schools’ new
students to make friends.
Whether it’s a month-long
camp or one that just lasts
a couple of days, they will
be useful down the road, as
those connections made in
the summer will be revisited
when the school year starts.
Summer leagues make the
bond even stronger since all
players in summer leagues
are working together towards
achieving a goal.
With that said, these
student-athletes will already
have a core group of friends
before they even start their
first day of school.
That’s the feeling I got
when I watched DiNaso on
the basketball court with
his new Knights teammates
throughout the summer.
The team welcomed these
new players with open arms
because they are all looking
to win — putting egos
to the side — and DiNaso
expressed the same sentiment
when I asked him
about his transition into a
new program.
Lincoln-Way West’s Ryan
McWilliams is in the same
position. He was one of the
best players on Central’s
team last year and now has
to adjust to new teammates
and earn his stripes with the
Warriors.
I covered West earlier
this week during a Lockport
tournament, and McWilliams
said the same thing in
that the team is accepting
of who he is because the
team’s chemistry is important
to its success.
Back in spring, after the
North girls soccer team was
defeated soundly by East in
the last matchup between
the two teams, the Griffins
underclassmen gave North
coach Mike Murphy, who
will be East’s coach next
year, flowers and spirit
wear, and they greeted their
future teammates. When I
asked East’s Caroline Kilrea
about the gesture, she said
it was a way to reassure
their new head coach that
he’s welcomed, and that she
Peyton Nobis and Madeline
Reno always have
wanted to make working
with horses a professional
endeavor.
They have achieved that
dream after decades of experience,
as they are now training
horses and teaching horseback
riding students at Cedar
Stables in Homer Glen.
Reno and her boyfriend,
Jeremy Canker, live on the
10-acre property at 14856
W. Reiter Drive that includes
seven dry lot pastures, a
5-acre field and a grass pasture
for 26 horses they board
at the stables. They also are
adding an outdoor arena and
heating for the stalls that to
be completed by this fall,
she said.
“It’s cool to take care of
others’ animals and be here
every day, all day,” Reno
said. “I like seeing horses
right outside my window
when I wake up … and coming
home to them.”
Cedar Stables has leased
the property since August
2015 and hired Nobis in
May as a horse trainer and
horseback riding instructor.
Nobis is training approximately
nine horses, including
four that have never been
ridden, she said.
Though the stable is full
for boarding, Nobis can
travel to train other horses.
Cedar Stables offers horseback
riding lessons for ages
2 and older, and also is holding
horseback riding camps
this summer for ages 6-13.
wants the Phoenix players
moving over to know that
they want to be best friends.
This is credit to the character
of the East, Central
and West players. Some
people may think negatively
and selfishly about this situation,
believing that the new
players will threaten his or
her future role on the team.
Instead, it seems like the
teams are embracing this
transition, knowing that
these extra players will only
make their program stronger.
The added depth should
only push these players even
harder to strive for a starting
role during position battles.
Besides winning and
competing, the best part of
playing sports is the bonds
formed along with it. I’m
happy that the Lincoln-
Way student athletes have
grasped that in the summer,
so far.
Lincoln-Way D210 debuts all-district marching band
Meredith Dobes
Contributing Editor
Cary Ruklic was accustomed
to the sound of Lincoln-Way
West’s 50-somemember
marching band, so
when the West band instructor
first heard the sound of
the 320-member combined
Lincoln-Way Community
High School District 210
ensemble, he was impressed.
The district made the decision
to combine its students
into one district-wide
marching band this year
after the closure of Lincoln-
Way North High School.
The decision was in part to
keep friends together and in
part to open the district to
new possibilities.
“Obviously, we’re in a
pretty unique situation as a
district, and creating this one
band allowed us to provide
a consistent experience for
all the band students in the
district,” Ruklic said. “It really
opens the door for us to
provide different kinds of
experiences for the students
that we couldn’t necessarily
do as three groups — things
like the Macy’s or Rose parades
are now possibilities.”
As four individual bands
last year, the groups ranged
in size from approximately
50 members to approximately
120, with varying
numbers of drum majors and
section leaders.
In the district band, there
are five drum majors and
roughly three or four section
leaders per section.
Marching band directors are
Ruklic, Bert Johnson, Justin
Barnish and Christopher
Mroczek.
Madeline Wilson, one
of the drum majors and a
Lincoln-Way Central senior,
said seeing all of the
students come together has
been exciting.
“As individual bands, we
have been able to do really,
really cool things, but coming
together, we will be able
to make something so much
bigger than anything we’ve
ever been able to do before,”
she said. “I think the potential
we have is most exciting.”
Fellow drum major and
West senior Mitchell Alcoser
agreed.
“We’ve been talking about
this group for months,” he
said. “We’ve been talking
about what it’s going to be
like, what rehearsals are going
to be like, how things are
going to go, and we finally
reached the point where
we’re doing it.”
The application process
was different this year for
drum majors and section
leaders. The district had students
submit applications
online, and it had approximately
90 students apply,
Ruklic said. The band directors
then invited finalists to
interview and selected the
leaders afterward.
“We didn’t want to exclude
kids who would’ve
had a leadership role at a different
school,” Ruklic said.
“We were trying to be as inclusive
as we could through
that process.”
Other big differences with
this year’s band are that
rehearsals and equipment
move from school to school,
and the band’s uniforms had
to be unified.
“The uniforms are going
to be awesome,” Ruklic
said. “We’ll use the black
pants we already have, and
we bought white coats and
are making a printed overlay
with the band logo in a cool
abstract Renaissance design
for over the jacket. We’re using
hats we already have and
printing a cover that will go
around those so they all look
the same.”
The band made its debut
in Mokena’s Fourth of July
parade, playing “The Battle
Hymn of the Republic” and
“Born in the USA.”
It is working on its competitive
show for the season,
as well, titled “Renew.”
The concept of the show is
“Before it starts, each
corners of the field,”
beginning, they’ll all come
of the show is titled
‘The Dark Ages.’ It’s a very
dark, tense kind of Medieval
battle imagery. The music
is aggressive. Coming out
of that, it’s representing the
Enlightenment. There’s a
section representing art and
architecture and mathematics,
so the music is based on
the music from the movie ‘A
Beautiful Mind.’ It’s very
cool, kind of minimalistic
music that shows the birth of
“There’s something super
special about Lucas Oil,”
Wilson said. “Not everyone
in the band has been able to
experience it, and I have had
the pleasure of being able to
do so. I’m excited to see how
everyone reacts because it’s
something completely out of
it until you’ve done it.”
Alcoser added that hearing
everyone get to play at
the stadium and hearing the
their show has been played is
something he looks forward
to, as well as the growth of
“Getting to see the end
the students react to their
sound and unity together has
been one of the most enjoyable
things about the schools
coming together to form one
band.
“This is our last year with
said of his fellow seniors.
“To go from being a freshman
in a band of 50 that was
small but mighty, now into a
band that is six times bigger
is incredible to experience.
After we’re done, we get to
We’ll see the tradition continue
on in bigger and better
ways, and 10 years from
now, we’ll get to say, ‘Back
started that.’ I look forward
to being able to say that.”
Keeping the closet
stocked with toys
Block party collects
many toy donations
for sick children
Michael Ivey
Freelance Reporter
Back in 2008, Mokena
resident Michael Weeks was
diagnosed with leukemia.
His mother, Chris, would
regularly take him for treatment
at Advocate Children’s
Hospital in Oak Lawn. The
memorable moments of
those trips would happen after
the treatments were completed.
“Whenever someone has
to go in for something like
a spinal treatment, or if they
had to go in for a transfusion
or bone marrow procedure,
Ryan Vukelic (left) and Aaron Janik play bags during the
block party.
afterwards they would reward
patients by taking them
to a closet and letting them
pick out a toy,” Chris said.
One day on the way to
the hospital for treatments,
Michael said there’s nothing
in there he likes anymore because
he had outgrown a lot
of the toys that were available.
“He was already like 8
years old and a lot of that
stuff was for infants,” Chris
said. “So we decided to
stock the closet.”
They came up with an idea
to stock the closet with toys
older children can play with.
Every year since 2011, the
Weeks family has hosted the
Michael Weeks’ Stock the
Closet Fundraiser, a block
party style event where everybody
who comes is told
to bring a toy or gift card to
“stock the closet” back at
Advocate Children’s Hospital.
The goal was to get toys
for children around the ages
of 10-15.
Chris believes it is important
for leukemia and other
medical patients in their early
teens to have something
to look forward to after their
treatments.
“People believe that the
chest is only for toddlers
when it’s not,” Chris said.
“There are teenagers affected
by leukemia and other
diseases. We are gearing to
bring toys for older children
so they can be excited about
getting something out of the
closet.”
This year’s fundraiser was
held at the Week’s residence
on Saturday, July 2. The
event included a dunk tank,
a DJ, obstacle courses and
a bounce house. The event
also featured visits from the
Mayor of Mokena, the chief
of police and multiple police
cars and army trucks were
on display.
The Dish
Antonis stands as bastion of variety, family values in Lockport
Restaurant delivers
Mediterranean
cuisine with heavy
Greek influence
Bill Jones, Managing Editor
Anyone who grabs a table
during the lunch hour at Antonis
Grill & Catering will
likely witness a common
sight.
Customers stroll in, and
customers stroll out, often
grabbing only soups or salads,
maybe sandwiches.
Though some order the more
hearty dinner offerings that
typically do better during the
restaurant’s early evening
hours. Most know general
manager Mo Elyan simply
as “Mo,” and call to him
by name as they enter. He,
in turn, knows many on the
same first-name basis.
And that is not something
that came about by accident.
While Antonis focuses on
Mediterranean cuisine with
some major Greek influences,
a family atmosphere
might as well be the second
bullet point on the Lockport
spot’s business plan.
“We just thrive off people
being happy,” Elyan said.
“What I love about food is
it brings laughter, it brings
joy, it brings happiness. If
everyone talked about food,
the world would be a better
place.”
Elyan’s love for food
translates to his approach to
cooking — a job he shares
with business partner George
Rodriguez — in a kitchen
that, while small, tries to do
as much from scratch as possible,
delivering fresh soups
daily, time-consuming traditional
preparations of family
recipes and new twists that
keep customers excited.
“We’re the opposite of a
franchise,” Elyan said. “Our
hands are making everything.”
As a result, the soups and
salads alone have proven a
major draw, with many stopping
in the restaurant just for
those. Elyan said Antonis
may craft up to 50 different
varieties weekly, with two
on each day.
“We make soup every
day,” Elyan said. “The soup
never gets old.”
Those include Antonis’
take on Avgolemeno — a
traditional Greek chicken
soup with egg-lemon sauce
— that drops the egg from
the recipe to help accommodate
allergies. It bills itself
simply as a “chicken with
lemon rice” soup but maintains
many of the traditional
flavors.
Elyan said customers also
regularly make requests
for things they have never
tried, or things they simply
had yesterday and returned
to find were no longer on
the menu. Antonis is happy
to accommodate whenever
possible, and that goes for
customers requesting other
off-menu items, if the ingredients
are on hand.
“We’re always open to
suggestions,” Elyan said.
“If they want a certain soup
made, we’ll make it.
“They’re helping us out
by giving us ideas. ... We
Antonis Grill & Catering in Lockport offers a variety of
Mediterranean specialties with Greek influences, from gyros
to chicken to souvlakia to salads, pitas, oven-browned
potatoes and rice pilaf. Bill Jones/22nd Century Media
like to be in touch with our
customers. It keeps them
hungry, talking and coming
back to us.”
The heart of the Greek
dinners menu begins with
gyros ($9.99) which feature
two pitas and two sauces for
diners to try. Like all dinners,
it comes with rice pilaf,
oven-brown potatoes, soup
and Greek salad.
From there, it moves to
one of the most popular
items: souvlakia. Available
in chicken ($9.99), steak
($11.99) and sometimes
other varieties, like pork or
lamb, souvlakia is simply
the Greek word for shish kebab,
but comes served without
the vegetables.
That portion of the menu
also offers the half Greek
toys
From Page 23
so successful is because of
the involvement of people
within the community.
“There are a lot of neighbors,
a lot of family, people
from church, and Michael
knows a lot of people from
baseball and other sports,”
Chris said. “When someone
gets sick like that, it affects
chicken ($9.99), spanakopita
(spinach pie, $9.99)
and much more, focusing
on Mediterranean-focused
ingredients like oil, oregano,
feta, olives, pepper, lemons
and garlic.
“Most of it is the norm, but
it’s how you use it,” Elyan
said of the spices that define
Mediterranean cuisine. “We
take a bit from everybody,
and we put our own spin on
it.”
Across the board, Elyan
said it also is important to
focus on quality ingredients.
“If I wouldn’t feed it to
my kid, I wouldn’t feed
it to someone else’s kid,”
he said of his philosophy.
“It’s home away from home
food.”
The restaurant also serves
everyone around you and
they’ve all been a big part of
his life and they keep coming
every year.”
The fundraiser this year
in particular will hold a very
special meaning.
“This is Michael’s cure
year,” Chris said.
Chris has said that despite
the event’s past success, next
year will be the last time the
family holds the fundraiser due
the gyros, souvlakia, chicken
and more as sandwiches,
offering diners lighter and
cheaper options that tend to
sell more during the lunch
hours.
And while the restaurant’s
recipes stem from those
honed over many years of being
cooked by Elyan’s family,
he is not afraid to tweak
them or to try new things
entirely. A shining example
of that are the Greek chicken
wings Antonis recently started
offering — featured fried,
bone-in chicken wings in a
Greek marinade, topped with
crumbled feta cheese and
olives for a fusion of flavors
quite unlike anything else on
the menu, or in the area.
“People are blown away
[by those],” Elyan said. “It’s
something different.”
Antonis opened in Lockport
roughly seven years
ago, but Elyan and Rodriguez
took over the spot in
2012 and have only watched
it grow in popularity as the
retail strip around it has
filled out over the past few
years.
Elyan said, at this point,
he feels like the restaurant
has become an important
part of the community. He
also feels the community has
become an important part of
his life.
“It’s a pleasure to be
here,” he said. “It’s really
motivating.”
to their children getting older.
“We’re going to go until
2017 and we’re not going to
do it after that just because
once the kids get to high
school it’s kind of hard to do
that stuff,” Chris said. “My
son is 13 and my daughter
is 15 right now. We’re celebrating
his cure year this
year and then we’re going to
do one more next year. Then
we’re going to be done.”

10 Questions
with Andrew Garcia
Andrew Garcia is a recent
graduate of Lincoln-Way
East High School, where
he was a member of the
Griffins baseball team. He
will continue his baseball
career at Prairie View
A&M University in Texas in
the fall.
Hitting my first home run
of the season last season,
against Providence.
Do you have any
pregame superstitions?
I usually don’t step on
the white line because I feel
like it’s bad luck if I do.
Lennan II
from the upper $200’s
Who got you into
baseball?
My dad when I was
around three years old.
What’s the best part
about the sport?
The pace of the game. It’s
not a fast-paced sport. You
have to stay patient.
Who do you look up
to?
I look up to Ozzie Smith.
He was one of the best
shortstops to ever play the
game.
What’s your favorite
memory on the baseball
diamond?
Do you have any career
aspirations?
I want to try to be an entrepreneur
but if that doesn’t
work out, I’ll try to be a mechanical
engineer.
What made you choose
Prairie View A&M?
I like year-round teams
and the weather also factored
into the decision. I
got offers from schools up
north, but I felt like I needed
to play year-round to go further
in baseball.
What are you going to
miss most about Lincoln
Way-East?
My teammates and the
photo submitted
bond that we formed while
playing together.
What’s something most
people don’t know
about you?
Something a lot of people
don’t know about me is I’m
half Mexican.
What’s your favorite
food?
Probably french fries.
all 16 guys today. We’re just
with the team. I like
that they get along with each
First thing we stress is always
team chemistry.”
Sam Shafer, East’s leading
scorer from last season,
was second behind Buggemi
with 11 points and added
three rebounds and two
blocks. His brother Max had
a game-high five rebounds.
Also, last year’s starting
point guard Zach Parduhn
added four points and three
assists. Zivo and Dan Mulholland
both had five points.
As for the Knights, Robinson
led the way with 11
points. DiNaso tied big man
Andrew Hancock for second
on the team with eight points.
Brian Ponton and Luke Hanley
each had four points.
The Knights and Griffins
will enter next season in different
phases of their programs.
East will return plenty
of members, along with
North standout Dorian Aluyi
transferring over, while Central
will have to redesign an
entirely new starting lineup.
Despite the differences, Kolimas
believes the Knights
will still be a big test.
“Lincoln-Way Central
is going to be a formidable
team,” Kolimas said. “They
got some size. [Chris Robinson]
is really a nice player.
Joey DiNaso is tenacious, as
we know, and they also have
Aaron Michalak, who was
missing for them [today].
They’re going to be tough
this year.”

“I’m ecstatic,” he said.
“I’ve been waiting for my
chance to prove myself and
now I have it. I’m ready to
put some work in.”
Loren Zolk, Andrew’s longtime
girls coach and boys assistant
coach, is taking over as
boys head coach this season.
He figures to have a good mix
of key returners — including
Chase, Kosary and Justin
Taylor — and newcomers like
Repa, Aguilar and Connor
Gountounas.
Gountounas, who was a
spark plug in the midfield
during the June 30 game and
created several offensive opportunities
for his teammates,
said Andrew has benefitted a
lot from its summer games.
“Coach likes to give everybody
a chance to prove
themselves,” he said. “It’s an
extra chance to build chemistry
and it makes it easier
going into the season to see
what we need to work on and
what our focus will be as we
get ready for that first game.”
Lincoln-Way East got
strong efforts from forward
Jordan Abbasi and midfielder
Tony Mavrogiannis.
Abbasi fired just wide on
a shot nine minutes in and
Mavrogiannis’ free kick
was saved by Aguilar in the
10th minute.
Abbasi had a few close
misses in the second half, including
a shot off the side of
the net with 15 minutes left
in the game. Dylan Murphy
also contributed by making
two saves for the Griffins.
East coach Ryan Decker
is excited about his team’s
depth.
“Jordan Abbasi is kind
of like the tip of the sword
when you talk about our
attack,” he said. “Joel Seielstad
is coming back as a
senior, Frank Dicosola is a
junior with two years of experience.
Andrew Arias is a
very talented player in the
center midfield. Isaac Cahue
and Liam Elsden are a solid
pairing in the back.
“We’re going to have 18
solid guys. So where we
fell off in the past when we
subbed, we’re not going to
have that this year because
of the strength of the players
we have.”
The summer was an important
chance for East to
build chemistry with new
players joining the team
from Lincoln-Way North.
“It’s been good,” Decker
said. “When it comes down
to it, the kids are here because
they want to play soccer.
They play for another
color now and there’s a different
crest on their chest,
but when it comes down to
it, it’s soccer. You respect
and you love the game.
“There’s a great mix of
guys here,” he added. “There
are jokers, there are guys
who are really focused, but
when it comes down to it
they’re all coming together
nicely now, which is a good
way to go into August.”

Team 22: baseball
The staff of 22nd Century Media chose the best baseball student-athletes — based on coach
recommendations and player statistics — in its seven-town southwest suburban coverage area
to place on one super team. This team is made up of players from Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-
Way East, Lincoln-Way North, Lincoln-Way West, Providence Catholic, Andrew, Tinley Park, Lockport
Township and Sandburg high schools.
—Compiled by 22nd Century Media staff
FIRST TEAM
P: Kevin Lane, junior,
Sandburg
8-0, 1.5 ERA, 60 K.
All-SWSC Blue. It is
hard to argue with
Lane’s numbers this
past season, as the
hurler went undefeated,
amassing a ridiculous
number of strikeouts on
the season.
P: Tyler Zarembka,
junior, Providence
7-2, 1.62 ERA, 36 K.
The Celtics’ Zarembka
and Connor Hilty
were practically
interchangeable this
season, but Zarembka
took a slight advantage
in ERA and strikeouts.
C: Cody McArthur,
junior, Tinley
.422, 37 RBI, 31 R, 14
doubles, 3 HR, 17 BB.
McArthur’s hot bat and
play behind the plate
helped the Titans to
the best regular season
record in the school’s
history.
1B: Jackson Dvorak,
senior, Providence
.368, 9 doubles, 34
RBI, 20 R. All-CCL
Blue. On a state
championship team
stacked with talent,
Dvorak still found a way
to stand out with a solid
bat and defense on the
diamond.
2B: Mike Madej,
senior, Providence
.446, 17 doubles, 30
RBI, 45 R. All-CCL Blue.
Committed to Purdue,
Madej only improved
his already stellar
junior season numbers
and played an integral
infield role in the
Celtics’ state titles.
SS: Ben Troike, senior,
LW North
.359, 15 RBI, 33 R,
.565 SLG. All-SWSC
Red. The Phoenix
leadoff hitter is
committed to the
University of Illinois
after a stellar final
high school season.
3B: Ryan Hastings,
senior, LW West
.407, 12 doubles, 24
RBI, 25 R, 10 BB, .659
SLG. All-SWSC Red.
Hastings had a big bat,
but he was just as big
on defense. He also
earned a full academic
scholarship to the
University of Alabama.
OF: Cam Post, junior,
LW Central
.421. All-SWSC Red.
Post led the Knights in
both RBI and doubles,
as well as being the
most versatile player
on the roster, playing
catcher, third, outfield
and designated hitter
this past season.
HONORABLE MENTION
OF: Matt Waznis,
senior, Providence
.316, 8 doubles, 4
HRs, 42 RBI, 27 R.
Waznis was another
key player in the Celtics
state championship
squad, with a powerful
bat and bombastic
RBI numbers on the
season.
OF: Nick Figus, senior,
LW North
.398, 12 doubles, 18
RBI, 29 R, .551 SLG.
The Phoenix outfielder
posted big numbers
in his final high school
season to help the
Frankfort program end
its run on a positive
note.
DH: Colin Kelly, junior,
Tinley
.500, 20 RBI, 38 R,
10 doubles, 15 SB. In
a strong year for the
Titans, Kelly’s bat rang
out most often. He
also proved a danger
when stealing bases,
and went 4-1 with a
1.9 ERA as a pitcher.
P: Ben Davis, junior, Lockport; Connor Lowman,
junior, LW West.
IF: Colin Winston, senior, Andrew; Joey McGuire,
senior, Lockport; Matt Monahan, senior, LW
West; Brandon Skopick, senior, LW East;
Connor Callaghan, senior, Andrew; Mike Carey,
sophomore, Andrew; Gavin Lovesky, junior,
Lockport; Eric Papierski, junior, Sandburg, Tom
Szczasny, senior, LW North.
SECOND TEAM
P: Connor Hilty, senior,
Providence
7-2, 1.83 ERA, 32 Ks.
P: Ryan Gabriel, junior,
Lockport
6-1, 2.04 ERA, 32 Ks.
C: Ben Zordani, senior, LW
West
.390, 12 doubles, .620
SLG, 26 RBI. All-SWSC
Red.
1B: Hunter Smith, senior,
LW East
.386, 3 HR, 27 RBI, 17 BB.
All-SWSC Blue.
2B: Anthony Cocco, senior,
Lockport
.348, 11 doubles, 32 RBI,
.600 SLG. All-SWSC Blue.
SS: Branden Comia,
sophomore, Sandburg
.351, 11 doubles, 23 RBI,
8 SB. All-SWSC Blue.
3B: Zack Pych, senior,
Providence
.378, 9 doubles, 23 RBI,
37 R. All-CCL Blue.
OF: Ryan McWilliams,
LW West
.325, 16 RBI, 23 R, 16 BB,
East’s Buggemi hits six 3-pointers to bury Central, 52-37
Griffins look to
maintain success
through summer
season
James Sanchez
Assistant Editor
Lincoln-Way Central
guard Joey DiNaso said it is
always going to be awkward
stepping on the court against
Lincoln-Way East. He was a
Griffin during his first three
years of high school.
The senior has been playing
with East players Sam
and Max Shafer, Zach Zivo,
Zack Tencza and others
since fourth grade. A summer
league matchup on
June 28 marked the second
time the two teams squared
off, and DiNaso has already
Lincoln-Way East’s Sam Shafer tries to make a shot June
28 during a summer league game against Lincoln-Way
Central. Paul Bergstrom/22nd Century Media
embraced being in his new
surroundings, away from his
former teammates.
“Going to Central I kind
of have a chip on my shoulder,”
he said. “I want to be at
my best and beat the school I
used to go to and make it like
a friendly rivalry.”
In order to make it a rivalry,
the wins cannot be one-sided.
The first time the two teams
met, DiNaso led the way to
victory by a double-digit margin.
East answered back the
next time around.
Behind a barrage of
threes from guard Joe Buggemi,
the Griffins avenged
their previous loss by defeating
the Knights 52-37
in New Lenox. The junior
hit six shots from behind
the arc and finished with a
game-high 20 points. Buggemi
said the addition of the
North players is motivating
him to improve his game, so
he could maintain a key role
in the rotation, like last year.
“The North kids coming
over, it’s definitely tough,”
he said. “They didn’t know
a lot of us, so there’s a lot of
competition for five starting
spots.”
Buggemi started off hot
scoring 11 of the team’s first
14 points after the tip-off.
Central point guard Chris
Robinson put the team on his
back with six straight points
shortly after to keep the game
close. The Griffins doubled
the Knights in three-pointers
made, but it was the Knights
that came away with a 24-22
first half lead by grinding out
baskets through offensive rebounds
and shots in the paint.
However, Central’s offense
went cold in the second,
while East maintained
efficiency. The difference
came down to the Griffins’
starters, who had significant
minutes last year, as opposed
to the Knights that had newcomers
to the varsity level.
“At the end of last season,
we were starting four sophomores,
and those guys are
now juniors, so we do have
more experience,” said East
coach Rich Kolimas. “But I
thought we were a little anxious
in that game. We shot a
lot of threes in that game, and
other than Joey, who was on
fire, we were not hitting from
the outside. But in the second
half, we got better shots. We
were a little bit more patient.”
The Knights were only able
to muster two points in the
last five minutes of play, but
Central coach Bob Curran’s
goal for the game was to have
a chance to evaluate his players
for the upcoming season.
All of its starters and most key
reserves graduated in spring.
“Obviously we’re not in
season form,” Curran said.
“Right now, we’re evaluating
a lot of guys. We played
East’s standouts in
its June 28 win over
Central
1. Joe Buggemi
The versatile junior
guard was a role
player last season
but is making his
case as a starter,
as he led all scorers
with 20 points.
Eighteen of them
came from beyond
the arc.
2. Sam Shafer
Last year’s leading
scorer for East
continued his
scoring prowess
against the Knights
with 11 points. He
also added three
rebounds and two
blocks.
3. Zach Zivo
The senior big man
is making the most
of his playing time,
scoring five points
and grabbing two
rebounds to help
secure the win.
East’s football head coach honored
with Power of Influence award
Amanda Jarzynski, Editor
High school is the time in every young
adults’ lives when they are shaped by experiences
and the people around them guiding
their way. When on an athletic team, there is
no bigger influential adult than their coaches.
With a head coach’s guidance, athletes can
not only become successful in their sport of
choice, but also become a successful human
in their everyday lives.
Each year the American Football Coaches
Association awards the Power of Influence
Randy Walker “Doing Great” Award to one
high school head coach who has spent a career
impacting his or her athletes, staff and
other coaches in their program. This year, that
coach is Rob Zvonar, head coach of the Lincoln-Way
East Griffins football team.
“It was certainly overwhelming and extremely
humbling,” Zvonar said. “I’m not an
individual award person because you can’t
run a football program without a lot of people
helping.”
Zvonar said that this award was also in
honor of the football program at East. Since
he began coaching in 2001, the Griffins have
earned a laundry list of accolades including
nine conference championships, many athletes
continuing on to collegiate play and several
awards.
Out of all of the awards, Zvonar said that
the Randy Walker award was most important
for him and his team.
“This accolade was made that much more
special because of who Randy Walker was
as a coach and a man,” Zvonar said. “Coach
Walker’s philosophies, ideals and core values
helped to shape the Lincoln-Way East Football
program at our inception in 2001, and his
impact continues to be evident today.”
This past season, the Griffins ended with a
8-3 regular season record.
“We were a little short of our goal, but there
was a lot of positive,” Zvonar said. “We have a
team that has tremendous character. We loved
each and every day with this group. We had
a group of seniors who played together for a
while; they were a pleasure to work with.”
Zvonar said that being around the young
athletes is the reason he enjoys coaching at
East. He said that the program year after year
is blessed with talented athletes with a lot of
character.
“We are fortunate to have the support of
parents and youth programs,” Zvonar said.
“But it comes down to the individual student
athletes in the program that make it worth it
to me.”
After 15 years with East, Zvonar said he
is not looking to leave the school. Luckily,
he was not among the group of coaches who
were shifted around due to the closing of Lincoln-Way
North. Zvonar said he is excited to
continue his career and ultimately finish his
career with the Griffins.
Dan Repa was called up
to Andrew’s varsity soccer
team for the playoffs last season
and got to be a part of the
Thunderbolts’ shocking run
to a sectional championship.
Now the sophomore forward
is ready to take on a
bigger role and help his team
experience more success.
“Last year’s playoffs were
a lot of fun,” Repa said. “I
think we have a great chance
to go far again this year. I’m
excited to get a chance to
help out the team.”
Repa capped an impressive
summer Thursday, June 30,
by scoring both goals in Andrew’s
2-0 win over Lincoln-
Way East in Frankfort. It
was the last of eight summer
games for both teams, and
the result left Andrew feeling
good as it waits for the fall.
“In the few games we’ve
had, I’ve been very impressed,”
junior goalkeeper
Andres Aguilar said. “With
the work we put in and the
chemistry we have, it’s going
to be a fun season.”
Repa scored four minutes
into the game, getting behind
the Griffins’ defense on
a counterattack after East’s
corner kick was broken up.
“It was a good ball ahead,”
Repa said. “I saw where Karl
[Kosary] was running and I
thought I could go behind
him. He played a nice flick
to me and I just put it away.”
Eighteen minutes later,
Repa scored again after Sergio
Gonzalez put pressure on
the East defense.
“Sergio was going through
all those people,” Repa said.
“He stuck his foot out and
the ball just kind of landed
at my feet. I struck it and it
went in.”
Aguilar made five saves to
record the shutout.
“My back four did a great
job,” Aguilar said. “Nick
Chase, Nick Garcia and Austin
Keate, my center backs,
all did great and of course my
wing backs Diego Prado and
Mario Perez. Four of those
guys play with me in club, so
it’s easy to play with them.
The chemistry is there.”
Like Repa, Aguilar joined
the varsity team for the playoffs
last season after spending
the year on junior varsity.
Now, he’s got his chance
to take over as the starting
goalkeeper for varsity.
