Meet the
new Belfast
Embraced on one side by the Belfast Hills and
lapped on the other by the waters of Belfast
Lough, Belfast is a welcoming city that is alive
with creativity and innovation, combined with a
captivating history and architecture to match.
Belfast is the meetings and events destination
that everyone’s talking about, the place that
conference organisers are racing to get
to, knowing that their conference will grab
attention and really stand out.
Belfast is a compact city jammed
full of culture, of rich history
and heritage, home to striking
architecture, maritime legacy, and
just about the friendliest, mostwelcoming
people you’ll find
anywhere. No wonder Northern
Ireland was ranked as the ‘happiest
place in the United Kingdom’ in early
2016. And we know that happiness
rubs off on our guests too.
Over one billion pounds has been
invested in the city over the past ten
years, and that confidence in the city
continues to grow. More than 1,500
new hotel rooms will be available
by 2018, as local and international
developers commit to being part
of the city’s development and its
new and ever-evolving story. You’ll

find that we’re never more than two
flights from anywhere in the world
and prices from the UK are usually
no more than standard rail travel.
Belfast has invested significantly in its
conference venues over the last few
years, so side by side the £30m new
extension of the Belfast Waterfront,
you’ll find classic architecture in the
Assembly Buildings Conference
Centre and in contrast the iconic
Titanic Belfast, situated on the
slipways where RMS Titanic was built.
Northern Ireland is a nation of
innovators, inventors, creators and
game changers, all with a Titanic
ambition to keep leading the way in
a whole range of sectors. We have a
young and highly educated workforce
that helps keep us forerunners in
ICT, creative industries, renewable
energy, engineering, agri-food,
business services, aerospace and
medicine. Imagine how much lesser
the world would be without London
buses, comfy aeroplane seats,
air conditioning, defibrillators and
drinking chocolate, all of which
began their life here in Belfast.
Consider too the confidence that
others have placed in us. Some of
the biggest events in the world have
come to Northern Ireland. The G8
Summit, Giro d’Italia, MTV Awards,
Turner Prize, and the World Police
and Fire Games… everyone has
placed trust in us and we never fail
to not just deliver but to go above
and beyond.
We are renowned for our sense
of fun and there is no better place
to meet, do business and enjoy
the ‘craic’! For every meeting and
event, we will work on your behalf
to ensure that everyone from taxi
drivers to cabin crew and even
the Lord Mayor of Belfast know
that your delegates are here. We’ll
make sure that we’re ready with our
warmest welcome for your arrival in
our city. That’s the Belfast difference.

impressed by afternoon tea in Hillsborough Castle, part of the Historic Royal
Palaces and the Queen’s official residence, or by being hosted by the Lord
Mayor of Belfast at a gala dinner in Belfast City Hall. We can even arrange
sure you will talk about your visit for years to come.
Fit for a king
We can offer a whole range of
regal experiences to impress your
delegates. Belfast Castle is a Scottish
Baronial landmark that provides a
sumptuous venue for any event,
with commanding views over Belfast
Lough from the rich green slopes
of Cave Hill. Alternatively, why not
impress your guests in the grandeur
of Hastings Culloden Estate and
Spa? Originally built as an official
Palace for the Bishops of Down,
the Culloden stands in 12 acres
of beautiful secluded gardens and
woodland. Palatial surroundings, fine
antiques and the highest levels of
personal service combine to give the
Culloden a unique air of elegance.
Just north of the city, Antrim
Castle Gardens and Clotworthy
House provide a stunning example
of evolutionary garden design
wrapped in over four centuries of
culture and heritage. The gardens
are a distinctive setting for events,
enveloped in the rich history of the
Massereene family dynasty.

Itinerary 2: Living Legends
Titanic heritage
Belfast is the birthplace of Titanic so
there is no better place to uncover
the real story than right here, amidst
the decedents of the men who built
the most famous ship in the world.
Host your gala dinner in Titanic
Belfast, the award-winning
internationally-renowned visitor
experience, overlooking the slipway
where Titanic was built.
The city has a rich maritime heritage.
SS Nomadic, the tender ship to
Titanic, provides an exclusive private
venue where guests can walk in
the footsteps of Elizabeth Taylor
and Richard Burton, all famous
passengers in her day.
HMS Caroline, a World War One Light
Battle Cruiser and the last surviving
ship from the Battle of Jutland in
1916, is a piece of world history that
is a recent and captivating addition
to the city’s maritime visitor and
delegate experience. The recently
restored vessel adds to the tapestry
of genuinely unique venues in the city.
A seat of learning
The dramatic Victorian architecture
of Queen’s University provides
an ambience that is quite simply
unsurpassed. The Great Hall bears a
striking resemblance to the dining
hall in Hogwarts and has
seen an equally striking
number of famous
scholars pass through
its doors. With a range
of meeting space to
suit any conference,
Queen’s University is first
class in every way.
VISIT BELFAST 09
Lockdown the heritage
Dating back to 1845, Crumlin Road
Gaol only closed its doors in 1996.
After extensive renovations, this is a
truly versatile event space steeped in a
history that you can feel from the very
minute you walk through the prison
gates. You can now host a conference
in the old chapel wing, grab an
informal lunch under the arched vaults
of Cuffs Restaurant or mesmerise your
delegates with a gala dinner in the
atmospheric Centre Circle.
Politics and peace
Northern Ireland’s complex political
history is well known and no visit
to the city is complete without
exploring the story.
There is a great range of political
and historical tours to suit all your
delegates’ needs, whether on foot,
by bus or by taxi. Guided by locals,
delegates can get the opportunity
to hear all sides of the story,
and ask those questions they’ve
always wanted to ask. Numerous
books have been written and TV
programmes made about the
city’s murals on the gable ends of
buildings. Now often community
rather politically themed, these
unique works of art are not to
be missed.
Stormont Parliament Buildings
is home to Northern Ireland’s
Government, set in its own estate
majestically overlooking the city.
A sumptuous dinner in the Long
Gallery can be complemented by
a fascinating tour of the historic
building including the Assembly
Chamber, the House of Commons
of the original Northern Ireland
Parliament.
Step into Westeros
With our region’s dramatic landscape
providing the setting for many of
Game of Thrones’ most memorable
scenes, the series has earned the
moniker of a contemporary legend.
There are tours to suit every level of
interest, with opportunities to explore
replicas of the sets including the Dark
Hedges, dress in character costumes
or sit in quiet and reverential
contemplation on the majestic slopes
of the Mourne Mountains, which
also inspired CS Lewis’ Narnia. At
Castleward you can break bread and
salt; enjoy a delicious hog roast and
Winterfell fare; wash
it all down with
pitchers of fine
deadly wine and
exclusive ‘Craft
Beer’ from the
Winterfell castle
brewery.

Itinerary 3: Gastro Delights
Belfast is overflowing with things for your delegates to do in the evenings
with unique venues and experiences for your drinks receptions, gala
dinners and private dining requirements. You’ll find everything here from
traditional Irish music sessions, to locally produced theatre at The MAC
and the Lyric, to international productions at the Grand Opera House.
We are known for the quality and provenance of our local artisan food with
our seafood, beef, lamb, dairy produce, fruit and vegetables ranked among
the best in the world. We can help to arrange for your delegates to dine in
style at a Chef’s table in one of our award-winning restaurants, or immerse
themselves in the cooking experience at one of our cookery schools.
Making of a master chef
Under the expert guidance of local
celebrity chefs at the The Cookery
School at James Street South,
delegates will be given a step-bystep
lesson in creating a delicious
meal that they can then enjoy on
the spot.
Be a star, be a star
Why not give your delegates that
1920s Hollywood experience at
the Cabaret Supper Club. Enjoy a
sumptuous meal served by your very
own butler, while delighting in live
jazz, burlesque, magic or comedy,
all in a setting that will leave your
guests truly starstruck.

more and more world-wide
tours are now on the menu. From
get to know our food story while
sampling a whole range of mouth
watering delights right
where they’re produced.
Delight in a draught
Belfast offers a full range of
establishments to quench even the
most thirsty of delegates. For an
informal delegate experience, take a
historical walking pub tour, relax in a
cosy snug in one of our historic bars
such as the Garrick or the Crown Bar,
or sample one of our new microbrews
or gins in one of our brewpubs.
Our Cathedral Quarter is home to cool
bars and restaurants and here you
can throw a street party for delegates,
something they’ll never forget. Just an
hour from the city, The Old Bushmills
Distillery is the world’s oldest licensed
whiskey distillery where you can
educate your whiskey palate under the
careful guidance of the Master Distiller.
Grown here, not flown here
We have great pride in our home-grown products and everyone you
meet will tell you that we think we produce the best food in the world.
There’s no better place to be fully immersed in the ‘farm to fork’
experience than St George’s Market. One of the oldest markets in
the UK, it has been voted the Best Large Indoor Market. A total treat
for the senses, with sights, sounds, tastes and smells guaranteed to
delight any visitor. There you can meet the local traders, hear their
stories and sample the produce of which they’re so proud.

the outside into the building. Whatever floor you’re on, you can
enjoy beautiful views and plenty of natural light…”
Derry~Londonderry
In 2013, Derry~Londonderry was
host to the UK’s first ever UK City
of Culture. Dating back to the 6th
century when St. Colmcille (Columba)
founded a monastery, the city has been
one of Ireland’s continually inhabited
settlements and is home to many
historical buildings, renowned cultural
venues and of course the 400 year
old city walls. The city also boasts a
thriving musical and literary scene to
enjoy along with numerous city walking
tours where visitors can relive the past.
The current Walled City dates back
to the 17th century, when city status
was received from the Guilds of
London. The history of the city can
be discovered in many of the key
buildings that are located within the
vicinity of, or close to, the city walls,
for example the recently restored
Guildhall, the newly built Siege
Museum, St. Columb’s Cathedral,
Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall,
First Derry Presbyterian Church,
the Museum of Free Derry and
the nearby Bogside murals. For
something different at night, the city
walls and many of these buildings
are beautifully illuminated, with
feature lighting showing off the
impressive facades.
The city also has a lively cultural
scene, with numerous galleries and
performance venues, as well as
renowned festivals and events that
take place on a regular basis – many
of which now take place at the city’s
newest venue – Ebrington Square
that is linked to the city by the
impressive Peace Bridge.
Mourne Mountains
The Mourne Mountains are home
to Slieve Donard, the highest
mountain peak in Northern Ireland
which rises to a height of 853
metres. This area is known to
have been the inspiration for C.S.
Lewis’ land of Narnia in the popular
children’s books ‘The Chronicles of
Narnia’. Rich in flora and fauna, it
is a paradise for walkers and bird
watchers, full of folklore and culture.
As an Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty, the area has many outdoor
adventure centres providing activities
from hill walking, rock climbing and
mountain boarding to mountain
biking, bouldering, fishing and golf.
Indeed the charming seaside town
of Newcastle is home to the famous
Royal County Down golf course, one
of the world’s top ten links courses.
Other golf courses can be found in
Ardglass, Warrenpoint and Kilkeel.
There are many forest parks in
the region, including Tollymore,
Castlewellan, Kilbroney and
Slieve Gullion, each with unique
characteristics. At Tollymore the
Cedar Avenue is magnificent, and
there are river, lake and forest
trails of differing lengths, whilst
Castlewellan is home to the National
Arboretum and Annesley Gardens,
the hedged Peace Maze planted
with 6000 yew trees, and the family
mountain bike trails. Kilbroney is
famous for its ancient woodland,
walking and mountain bike trails
and idyllic setting; Slieve Gullion’s
scenic drive offers stunning views
across the Ring of Gullion, Mourne
Mountains, Cooley Peninsula and
Armagh Drumlins and has top class
facilities for walkers and families.
In the upper Mournes are the vast
tranquil reservoirs of Silent Valley and
Ben Crom. There are many walking
trails showcasing the stunning
scenery and the 22 mile Mourne wall
also runs from peak to peak over
some of the highest summits.
The towns in the Mournes area
have their own stories to tell, such
as the fishing villages of Kilkeel
and Annalong, Banbridge with
its linen industry legacy, Victorian
Rostrevor and the historic City of
Newry. To the west of Newry lies
the Ring of Gullion, also an Area
of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This striking landscape is an area
steeped in Celtic mythology famed
for it’s rich culture and heritage,
and numerous prehistoric and early
Christian sites.

Strangford Lough
Designated as an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty,
Strangford Lough is Northern
Ireland’s first marine nature reserve
and is the British Isles’ largest sea
inlet, internationally renowned for
its marine, plant and wildlife.
The area is popular with tourists
and noted for its scenery and
picturesque villages and towns.
As well as the main town,
Newtownards, at the northern
tip of the Lough, other notable
examples are Portaferry and
Strangford, separated by a short
ferry crossing at its southern end.
The area is known for its seafood
restaurants and cafés and its
unique crafts. It is associated with
two great Scots, James Hamilton
and Hugh Montgomery, who led
the settlement of Ards and North
Down, laying the foundations for
the Plantation of Ulster by Scottish
people, whose descendants came
to be known as the Ulster-Scots.
Activities such as kayaking,
fishing and sailing are popular
on the Lough, and for the more
adventurous the Sea Safari or
canoe trails are a real treat.
Activities on land include walking
and cycle trails, golf, bird watching
and horse riding.
There are also many fascinating
attractions to be explored and
enjoyed. Experience the vast
marine life at Exploris Aquarium in
Portaferry, re-opening in 2016, or
spend an afternoon at one of the
two National Trust properties in the
area, Mount Stewart House and
Gardens or Castle Ward, which has
mountain bike trails in its grounds.
Delamont Country Park offers
waymarked walks, a miniature railway
and the Millennium or Strangford
Stone - the largest megalith in Ireland
and Britain - while the large collection
of native and exotic water birds and
wildlife at the tranquil Castle Espie
Wetland Centre offers an amazing
outdoor learning experience.
Steeped in Christian heritage sites,
the Strangford Lough area forms
part of the Saint Patrick’s driving trail
- indeed the area to the south east
of the Lough around Downpatrick is
commonly known as Saint Patrick’s
Country due to its close links with the
Saint, and is known the world over as
the burial place of Saint Patrick.
its Waterways
Bordering five of Northern Ireland’s six
counties, Lough Neagh is the largest
freshwater lake in Britain and Ireland at
18 miles long and 7 miles wide and the
third biggest in Europe.
3
Lough Neagh captivates visitors with its
tranquil atmosphere, unspoilt scenery,
secluded bays and skyward views. A
haven for wildlife and home to a wealth
of flora and fauna, the lough also has a
rich Christian heritage, with the remnants
of three round towers and one of the
finest high crosses in the whole of
Ireland, Ardboe Cross.
2
4
5
The richness of the wild flower
meadows, woodlands, shoreline and
open water means that there is always
something special to see. The lough
has two main islands; Ram’s Island
and Coney Island, both of which have
significant historic interest.
Whether it is the mythical story of
Finn McCool or the more scientific
explanation that you choose to believe
about Lough Neagh’s history, the largest
natural resource in Northern Ireland is
undoubtedly an ‘eco-treasure’. There is
so much to see and do from history and
heritage, visitor attractions to land and
water based activities. Lough Neagh
and its Waterways is the homeland
of Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney.
Visitors can embark on a tour of Heaney
country visiting key sites in the beautiful
landscape that were important in
Heaney’s life and work.
Lough Neagh Eels are famous across
Europe. Protected by European law for
their unique quality, you can sample them
in the top restaurants across Northern
Ireland, and during the season pubs close
to Lough Neagh such as the Crosskey’s
Inn, Ireland’s oldest thatched pub, serve
eel suppers along traditional music and
plenty of craic.
Armagh
It may be the smallest of Northern
Ireland’s six counties but Armagh
certainly has no shortage of history,
culture and scenic landscapes.
Known as the ‘Orchard County’
owing to the rich apple growing
country centred around Loughgall
in the north, each May the county
comes alive with pink flowers in the
apple trees, and the annual Apple
Blossom Festival celebrates the start
of the season.
The elegant City of Armagh with
its Georgian architectural and Mall
which is celebrated in November
through the annual Georgian Day
event is best known for its rich
Christian heritage.
The city is a main destination on
the Saint Patrick’s Trail and has
been known as the spiritual capital
of Ireland since the Saint founded
his great church in 445AD on the
hill-top where presently the Church
of Ireland Cathedral is situated. On
the opposing hill sits the magnificent
St Patrick’s Roman Catholic
Cathedral. The adjacent Cardinal
Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library &
Archive houses more than 40000
books dating from as early as the
15th Century together with a fine
collection of historical artefacts.
The city has many sites to be
explored and enjoyed. Re live
the battle of Barossa, part of the
Napoleonic Wars at the Royal Irish
Fusiliers Museum. The Armagh
County Museum holds rich and
diverse collections of relevance to
the area. Discover the coin and art
collections on display at No.5 Vicars’
Hill or visit nearby Armagh Public
Library and see the many hidden
treasures such as an original copy
of ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ and Sir Walter
Raleigh’s ‘History of the World’.
Step back in time at Navan Fort
situated to the west of the city. This
Iron Age site was once home to the
high kings of Ulster and an ancient
ceremonial site, and the myths and
legends surrounding the site can be
explored at the Navan Centre. The
rest of the county also has much to
offer to visitors of all interests. The
pretty National Trust properties of
Ardress House and the Argory are
fine country estates worth exploring.
Also worth a visit is Dan Winters’
Cottage and Ancestral Home
where the Orange Order was born
in 1795, and the recently opened
Sloan’s House Museum in Loughgall
displays an important collection of
documents relating to the beginning
of the Orange Order, including some
of the first warrants signed. Further
afield, the Tayto Factory, home of the
famous Tayto crisps, and the village
of Milford, home of the penalty kick
and the Milford House Collection
make for interesting visits.

with over 40000 interlocking
basalt columns and a world class
innovative visitor centre.
Stop off for a tour and a tipple at the
The Open Championship 2019.
History buffs will not be disappointed
with Dunluce Castle, a medieval
bastion perched on a North Antrim
headland, with historic links to the
early Christians, Vikings and Anglo
Normans. Mussenden Temple dating
from 1785, in all its dramatic, cliff
edge splendour, is located near
Castlerock and offers spectacular
views westwards over Downhill
Strand towards County Donegal.
All along the route, the North
Atlantic waters provide the perfect
playground for your favourite water
sports – ideal for whetting an
appetite to indulge is some award
winning food, made from local
produce of course. The Causeway
Coast and Glens is yours to enjoy.
