Titanic heritage 

Belfast is the birthplace of Titanic so 

there is no better place to uncover 

the real story than right here, amidst 

the decedents of the men who built 

the most famous ship in the world. 

Host your gala dinner in Titanic 

Belfast, the award-winning 

internationally-renowned visitor 

experience, overlooking the slipway 

where Titanic was built. 

The city has a rich maritime heritage. 

SS Nomadic, the tender ship to 

Titanic, provides an exclusive private 

venue where guests can walk in 

the footsteps of Elizabeth Taylor 

and Richard Burton, all famous 

passengers in her day. 

HMS Caroline, a World War One Light 

Battle Cruiser and the last surviving 

ship from the Battle of Jutland in

Lockdown the heritage 

Dating back to 1845, Crumlin Road 

Gaol only closed its doors in 1996. 

After extensive renovations, this is a

in the old chapel wing, grab an 

informal lunch under the arched vaults 

of Cuffs Restaurant or mesmerise your

Politics and peace 

Northern Ireland’s complex political 

history is well known and no visit 

to the city is complete without 

exploring the story. 

There is a great range of political 

and historical tours to suit all your

Titanic Exhibition Centre 

Titanic Exhibition Centre is the ideal city 

centre venue for large scale events in Belfast.

Assembly Buildings is one of the finest 

conference and exhibition venues in the

Assembly Buildings Conference Centre is located 

in Belfast city centre. Built in 1905, in the style of a 

Scottish Baronial Castle, this conference and meetings 

venue is capable of hosting anywhere from 10 to 1150 

delegates. A recent investment of £8 million has brought 

the meetings space right up to date. 

A range of smaller meeting rooms include the Minor Hall 

suitable for up to 200 delegates, the Boardroom and six

Mourne Mountains 

The Mourne Mountains are home 

to Slieve Donard, the highest 

mountain peak in Northern Ireland 

which rises to a height of 853 

metres. This area is known to 

have been the inspiration for C.S. 

Lewis’ land of Narnia in the popular 

children’s books ‘The Chronicles of 

Narnia’. Rich in flora and fauna, it 

is a paradise for walkers and bird 

watchers, full of folklore and culture. 

As an Area of Outstanding Natural 

Beauty, the area has many outdoor 

adventure centres providing activities 

from hill walking, rock climbing and 

mountain boarding to mountain 

biking, bouldering, fishing and golf. 

Indeed the charming seaside town 

of Newcastle is home to the famous 

Royal County Down golf course, one 

of the world’s top ten links courses. 

Other golf courses can be found in 

Ardglass, Warrenpoint and Kilkeel. 

There are many forest parks in 

the region, including Tollymore, 

Castlewellan, Kilbroney and 

Slieve Gullion, each with unique 

characteristics. At Tollymore the 

Cedar Avenue is magnificent, and 

there are river, lake and forest 

trails of differing lengths, whilst 

Castlewellan is home to the National 

Arboretum and Annesley Gardens, 

the hedged Peace Maze planted 

with 6000 yew trees, and the family 

mountain bike trails. Kilbroney is 

famous for its ancient woodland, 

walking and mountain bike trails 

and idyllic setting; Slieve Gullion’s 

scenic drive offers stunning views 

across the Ring of Gullion, Mourne 

Mountains, Cooley Peninsula and 

Armagh Drumlins and has top class 

facilities for walkers and families. 

In the upper Mournes are the vast 

tranquil reservoirs of Silent Valley and 

Ben Crom. There are many walking 

trails showcasing the stunning 

scenery and the 22 mile Mourne wall 

also runs from peak to peak over 

some of the highest summits. 

The towns in the Mournes area 

have their own stories to tell, such 

as the fishing villages of Kilkeel 

and Annalong, Banbridge with 

its linen industry legacy, Victorian 

Rostrevor and the historic City of 

Newry. To the west of Newry lies 

the Ring of Gullion, also an Area 

of Outstanding Natural Beauty. 

This striking landscape is an area 

steeped in Celtic mythology famed 

for it’s rich culture and heritage, 

and numerous prehistoric and early 

Christian sites.


Strangford Lough 

Designated as an Area of 

Outstanding Natural Beauty, 

Strangford Lough is Northern 

Ireland’s first marine nature reserve 

and is the British Isles’ largest sea 

inlet, internationally renowned for 

its marine, plant and wildlife. 

The area is popular with tourists 

and noted for its scenery and 

picturesque villages and towns. 

As well as the main town, 

Newtownards, at the northern 

tip of the Lough, other notable 

examples are Portaferry and 

Strangford, separated by a short 

ferry crossing at its southern end. 

The area is known for its seafood 

restaurants and cafés and its 

unique crafts. It is associated with 

two great Scots, James Hamilton 

and Hugh Montgomery, who led 

the settlement of Ards and North 

Down, laying the foundations for 

the Plantation of Ulster by Scottish 

people, whose descendants came 

to be known as the Ulster-Scots. 

Activities such as kayaking, 

fishing and sailing are popular 

on the Lough, and for the more 

adventurous the Sea Safari or 

canoe trails are a real treat. 

Activities on land include walking 

and cycle trails, golf, bird watching 

and horse riding. 

There are also many fascinating 

attractions to be explored and 

enjoyed. Experience the vast 

marine life at Exploris Aquarium in 

Portaferry, re-opening in 2016, or 

spend an afternoon at one of the 

two National Trust properties in the 

area, Mount Stewart House and 

Gardens or Castle Ward, which has 

mountain bike trails in its grounds. 

Delamont Country Park offers 

waymarked walks, a miniature railway 

and the Millennium or Strangford 

Stone - the largest megalith in Ireland 

and Britain - while the large collection 

of native and exotic water birds and 

wildlife at the tranquil Castle Espie 

Wetland Centre offers an amazing 

outdoor learning experience. 

Steeped in Christian heritage sites, 

the Strangford Lough area forms 

part of the Saint Patrick’s driving trail 

- indeed the area to the south east 

of the Lough around Downpatrick is 

commonly known as Saint Patrick’s 

Country due to its close links with the

Armagh 

It may be the smallest of Northern 

Ireland’s six counties but Armagh 

certainly has no shortage of history, 

culture and scenic landscapes. 

Known as the ‘Orchard County’ 

owing to the rich apple growing 

country centred around Loughgall 

in the north, each May the county 

comes alive with pink flowers in the 

apple trees, and the annual Apple 

Blossom Festival celebrates the start 

of the season. 

The elegant City of Armagh with 

its Georgian architectural and Mall 

which is celebrated in November 

through the annual Georgian Day 

event is best known for its rich 

Christian heritage. 

The city is a main destination on 

the Saint Patrick’s Trail and has 

been known as the spiritual capital 

of Ireland since the Saint founded 

his great church in 445AD on the 

hill-top where presently the Church 

of Ireland Cathedral is situated. On 

the opposing hill sits the magnificent 

St Patrick’s Roman Catholic 

Cathedral. The adjacent Cardinal 

Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library & 

Archive houses more than 40000 

books dating from as early as the 

15th Century together with a fine 

collection of historical artefacts. 

The city has many sites to be 

explored and enjoyed. Re live 

the battle of Barossa, part of the 

Napoleonic Wars at the Royal Irish 

Fusiliers Museum. The Armagh

Step back in time at Navan Fort 

situated to the west of the city. This 

Iron Age site was once home to the 

high kings of Ulster and an ancient 

ceremonial site, and the myths and 

legends surrounding the site can be

offer to visitors of all interests. The 

pretty National Trust properties of 

Ardress House and the Argory are 

fine country estates worth exploring. 

Also worth a visit is Dan Winters’ 

Cottage and Ancestral Home 

where the Orange Order was born 

in 1795, and the recently opened 

Sloan’s House Museum in Loughgall 

displays an important collection of 

documents relating to the beginning 

of the Orange Order, including some 

of the first warrants signed. Further 

afield, the Tayto Factory, home of the 

famous Tayto crisps, and the village 

of Milford, home of the penalty kick 

and the Milford House Collection 

make for interesting visits.

Route is internationally recognised as

History buffs will not be disappointed 

with Dunluce Castle, a medieval 

bastion perched on a North Antrim 

headland, with historic links to the 

early Christians, Vikings and Anglo 

Normans. Mussenden Temple dating 

from 1785, in all its dramatic, cliff 

edge splendour, is located near 

Castlerock and offers spectacular 

views westwards over Downhill 

Strand towards County Donegal.

Getting to Belfast 

By Sea 

Belfast is easily accessed by sea with crossings from 

both Scotland and England. Travel by state of the art 

super fast ferries with journey times from just 2 hours 

15 minutes. 

By Rail 

The Enterprise service runs 8 times daily 

(5 times on Sundays) from Dublin to Belfast. 

The journey time is approximately 2 hours.

The airport is situated just three miles from Belfast City 

Centre. The Airport Express 600 bus service runs from 

the airport terminal to the city centre every 20 minutes 

Monday to Friday. (Please check www.translink.co.uk

International Airport 

Belfast International Airport is 30 minutes drive via 

the M2 Motorway. The Airbus service 300 operates 

between the airport and Belfast City Centre every 15 

minutes during peak times Monday to Friday, every 20 

minutes on Saturday and at 30 or 60 minute intervals

Dublin Airport Express 

Coach Service operates from Dublin Airport 24 hours 

a day, with a journey time of approximately 2 hours.
