elcome • About the Chamber 

Welcome to West Kerr County where the beautiful 

hill country beams with sunshine reflecting across the 

waters of the Guadalupe Rivers and Johnson Creek. 

There are many streams and natural springs that 

flow into the Guadalupe, bubbling cool water from 

below your feet. The headwaters of the Guadalupe 

River are not highly evident or easily seen, as both 

tributaries emerge on private properties. Both forks 

begin approximately 20 miles upstream from Hunt 

- the north on FM 1340 and the south on Highway 

39. Each fork of the river wanders along as you drive 

these two scenic roads until they converge at Hunt 

Crossing forming the Guadalupe River. 

Enjoy your time here, stop by and visit our office at the 

Bank of the Hills, Ingram Bank building. 

With average temperatures ranging from lows in the 50’s, to highs in the 80’s, the weather is 

generally pleasant. There are however some very hot 90 plus degree summer months which draw 

thousands to our main attraction, the Guadalupe River, for water fun, camping, and recreation. 

Keep in mind there are numerous private properties along the rivers and creeks, please respect 

these and do not trespass, there are plenty of river crossings that allow public access to the river. 

If you are looking to make West Kerr County your summer getaway there are a plethora of B&B’s, 

resorts and inns to book for a vacation. If your child is one of the thousands of youths that fill the 

camps along the river during the summer why don’t you stay and enjoy our little slice of heaven 

with them. 

Area attractions are all around the Hill Country from our most popular STONEHENGE II, to 

the art galleries and THE POINT THEATRE that overlooks the Guadalupe River. If cowboys are 

more your style be sure and enjoy the outdoor dance after the rodeo at CRIDER’S. From swimming, 

motorcycle rallies, bike tours, birding, fishing, hiking, camping, RV’ing, shopping, rodeos, the 

outdoor theater, music venues, the arts, festivals, market days, wineries or just plain relaxing, there 

is never a shortage of fun…that’s why we are “Where the City Comes To Play”.

About the Chamber 

The West Kerr County Chamber of Commerce began in 1979 when a group of local 

merchants and business owners decided to form The Citizens Chamber of West Kerr 

County. Articles of incorporation are filed and dated Oct. 4, 1979. The first president was 

Jasper Moore, owner of T.J. Moore Lumber. The Chamber had a name change in 1990 to it’s 

current name. The WKCCC name is filed with the State of Texas, Secretary of State. 

Today the West Kerr County Chamber has approximately 200 members and is actively 

involved with merchants and individuals, striving to serve the community as it did before 

the City of Ingram was incorporated in 1981. With the history of this area, the chamber 

wants to remain steeped deep in its rich history and show the pride of living in a beautiful 

area of recreation and the headwaters of the Guadalupe River and Johnson Creek. 

Mission: 

• To advance the recreational, cultural and economic interests of West Kerr County. 

• To encourage unity in the community with Chamber members through monthly mixers to 

network and update on current issues or events. 

• To engage in non-partisan analysis, study and research to produce results and make available 

to the public; to further promote tourism and publicity for the area. 

• To foster goodwill and good relations with neighboring towns through their chambers. 

How the Chamber accomplishes the mission: 

• To advertise tourism through state, local and electronic media opportunities. 

• Support & promote local businesses. 

• Promote economic “wellness” throughout West Kerr County allowing for a stable, healthy and 

continued development of the business climate.

C ommunities of West Kerr County 

Ingram is between Kerrville and 

Hunt on the banks of the beautiful 

Guadalupe River. 

Ingram was founded in 1879 by 

J.C.W. Ingram who purchased 6 acres 

from Mr. Abner Morriss and opened a 

store and post office. 

After the flood of 1932 the town 

decided to relocate. Most of the 

businesses moved about one half mile 

northeast to higher ground, as the newer 

hwy road 27 had been built also. 

The first to move was the drugstore 

owned by J. J. Maxwell, now built of 

flagstone. Others followed, all building 

of flagstone. Ingram became known as 

the Little Rock Town by the River. It was 

thought to be the only totally rock town in 

the U.S. at the time.

City Council meets 1 st and 3 rd Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm. 

Mayor and five alderman serve 2 year terms. 

The Mayor and 2 alderman are elected on even years and the other 3 alderman are elected on odd years

The Municipal Judge is appointed by the City Council and serves a 1 year term.

The City Marshal, Rowan Zachry, 

is appointed by the Council. 

The Ingram Volunteer Fire Department 

was started in 1959. 

The Ingram City Park is located on 

Hwy 27 with the entrance between Wells 

Fargo and Edward Jones buildings. The 

Park offers a playground, access to the 

Guadalupe River, walking path and a 

pavilion (with a kitchen and restrooms 

available with reservations). 

Future growth for Ingram and the 

surrounding area are very positive with 

the new sewer lines being installed and 

requests from area businesses asking 

to be annexed into the city. For more

Hunt 

Not an incorporated town, but “Hunt 

happenings” really do happen on a daily 

basis (in a tranquil way) at the confluence 

of the North and South Forks of the 

beautiful Guadalupe River. Hunt offers The 

Hunt Store (that plays seasonal live music), 

a post office, restaurants, 1 school, 2 

churches and a recovery center. When you 

happen to “sit a spell” here you will want to 

make this area your home permanently. 

The community began in 1912; 

however, the visible history of dinosaur 

tracks in the river bed of the South Fork 

of the Guadalupe River, west of Hunt, 

tells us there were other inhabitants some 

115 million years ago.Youth camps and 

summer homes were being built as early 

as the 1920’s and are still a summertime 

Mecca worldwide. 

Four miles west on Hwy. 39 is home 

to the oldest outdoor rodeo and dancehall 

still in active use, Criders. Criders is 

famous for many a youth learning the two 

step and chastise dancing under the stars 

after the rodeo. Thousands of people come 

here because the stars at night, are big and 

bright, da da da da…, deep in the heart 

of Texas! (rodeo & dance are open from 

Memorial Day Weekend through Labor 

Day weekend each year)

ountain Home 

The community, 12 miles west from 

Ingram on Hwy 27, has a post office and 

blinking light and has had its name since 

1923 when Mrs. Olive Estes changed 

it from Ura. One reason for the name 

change was the large two-story house 

that sat close to the road from Johnson 

Creek where folks could look up 

and see the “mountains”. Not big 


mountains certainly, but to early settlers 

having to drive their teams up the grades 

with wagons loaded with ranch supplies, 

the hills seemed like mountains.The 

stage coach line went from Kerrville to 

Junction, and pulled those grades, and 

would make a stop in Mountain Home. 

The Mountain Home Post Office serves a 

large ranching community - The Divide, the 

Heart of the Hills Research Station, Sunset 

Baptist Church, Cowboy Camp Meeting, 

and the famous YO Ranch, to name a few 

residences.

he Divide 

Prior to 1875, the only large trees in 

the region were found along the rivers and 

creeks or protected canyons due to the 

annual grass fires set by 

Indians to provide fresh 

green grass in the spring 

to lure herds of buffalo 

and antelope into the 

area. The last Indian raid 

in the region occurred 

in 1882. Homesteaders 

rushed to settle the top 

of the Edwards Plateau 

during the period from 

1881 to 1885. They 

discovered that there was 

a strip of land from five to 

fifteen miles wide, running in an east-west 

direction, dividing the rainfall run-off into 

the various rivers; so it thus became known 

as “The Divide”. The coming of windmills 

to the Divide, during or shortly after 1880, 

changed the region into one of the premier 

ranching areas of Texas. One of the few 

remaining active one-room schoolhouses in 

the U.S. is the Divide School on the Warren 

Klein ranch, located on Hwy. 41 near the 

entrance to the world-famous YO Ranch. 

The Divide is the heart of the Angora 

goat production in Texas. Additionally, 

sheep and cattle are stocked in the region. 

Numerous exotic wildlife ranches are found 

on the Divide today, where game animals 

and birds from Africa, India, Europe, Asia, 

and Australia can be 

found running around in 

the shin oak, juniper, and 

live oaks. Much of James 

Michener’s TEXAS deals 

with the Divide area. 

Garvin Store is a “must see” 

country store at the intersection 

of highways 41 & 83.

W est Kerr Historic Timeline 

1689: The Guadalupe River was named by General Alonzo De Leon. 

1825: James Kerr (for whom Kerr County is named) founded the town of Gonzales at the junction of 

the Guadalupe and the San Marcos Rivers. 

1846: From Gonzales, Joshua Brown rode horseback up the Guadalupe to its headwaters in West 

Kerr County to verify stories of giant Cypress trees along it’s banks. More than satisfied, Joshua 

returned to Gonzales, assembled a group of 10 shingle makers, and journeyed back up river to 

establish a shingle camp in Kerr County. 

1850: Freight haulers made the hazardous monthly trips from West Kerr County to San Antonio. 

1856: Kerr County is officially organized and first County Courthouse completed, made of logs 

sixteen feet long. 

1857: No fewer than 10 mills--grist, flour, lumber, cotton--were along the Guadalupe River between 

Hunt and Comfort. Purebred Sheep and Angora goats range West Kerr County marking the 

beginning of the wool and mohair industry. 

1860: Profitable cattle drives to Kansas territory prompted Longhorn cattle ranching. 

1865: One of the last years that area Indians annually burned the “Divide” grassland to provide fresh 

spring grazing to entice buffalo and antelope into the area. 

1872: Cattle drives to Kansas on the Old Chisholm Trail from the Texas Hill Country to Abilene, 

Kansas, began. 

1875: Wool and Mohair Growers Association had an up-hill battle with the cattlemen until it was 

learned how compatible and lucrative ranching cattle with sheep and goats could be. 

1878: Last recorded Indian massacre resulted in death of 4 children of the Dowdy family (historical 

marker, Sunset Cemetery, Mountain Home). 

1879: Hunt Baptist Church was founded by a group of pioneer families and was the first Baptist 

Church to be organized in the area and surrounding counties. 

1880: Charles Schreiner bought the YO Ranch and has continued operations in the same Schreiner 

family for five generations. 

1880: Windmills for water arrive on The Divide. 

1881: Pioneer families begin to rush to The Divide. 

1882: The last Indian Raid. 

1882: Pioneer Jack McNeil operated first blacksmith shop in Ingram Settlement. 

1915: The Guadalupe River rose to 30 feet with flood waters and at the same time, Johnson Creek 

came down with the biggest rise in history, flooding Old Ingram. 

1921: Kerr County was named the healthiest spot in U.S. inspiring numerous summer youth camps, 

especially in the Hunt area. 

1932: Devastating flood, Guadalupe River rose 35 feet. 

1939: Ranchers all over the Hill Country donated money and time to build the Camp Meeting 

Tabernacle. Several denominations combine for the services for four generations. Its popularity 

has grown over the years because of the humility and sincerity of the participants. 

1940: Texas Governor W. Lee O’Daniel hunted buffalo in Kerr County. 

1941: The last YO cattle drive from the Divide to the Kerrville railhead for shipment to San Antonio. 

1949: Mo Ranch became the conference center of Presbyterians in the Southwest by purchasing 377 

acres from the Daniel J. Moran family. The remaining 6,500 acres was then sold to the State of 

Texas and are now the Kerr Wildlife Management Area. 

1950: Terrible seven year drought with dust storms. Even buzzards attack livestock as they were 

being birthed. 

1956: Kerr County Centennial Celebration. 

1958: The Hill Country Arts Foundation was started by several interested people from Houston and 

incorporated in 1959. 

1976: The first high school in West Kerr County, Ingram Tom Moore High School, was built, with 

these words etched in granite in the foyer, “Ingram Moore High School, established 1980, 

A student centered school in a student centered community where the standard of quality 

education will not be compromised.” 

1986: Kerr County Sesquicentennial Celebration.

Hunt is a rural district in Hunt with 

187 students. First known as Japonica 

School. The Hunt School has had its 

present location since 1926. The Hunt 

School is known as “the best little school

Ingram ISD is a progressive school 

district of approximately 1,000 students 

P-K (three and four years old) thru 12th 

grade. Nestled in the beautiful Texas Hill 

Country with a view of the magnificent 

Guadalupe River valley, Ingram ISD serves 

a 209 square mile area in the communities 

of Ingram, Hunt, Mountain Home and The 

Divide. Currently there are three campuses, 

an elementary serving Pre-K thru Fifth

The Divide School Campus is on Hwy 

41, approximately 29 miles NW of Ingram. 

In terms of students served Divide ISD 

is the smallest district in Texas, serving 

28 students. The campus consists of the 

original building built in 1936 and a Pre-K 

building built in 1997. The students 

attending the Divide School come from

native wildlife species, birds, wildlife management 

education. Principal wildlife species found on the 

Kerr Wildlife Management Area include 

white-tailed deer, bobwhite quail, javelina, wild 

turkey, mourning dove, fox squirrel, bobcat, 

raccoon, skunk, armadillo, ringtail “cat”, rabbit, 

gray fox, and many species of reptiles and 

migratory birds. Open year round, except closed 

for Special Permit hunts.

Heart of the Hills 

Fisheries Science Center 

Owned & Operated by Texas Department of 

Parks and Wildlife Department. Located 9 miles 

northwest of Ingram on Hwy. 27. The only fishery 

research station in Texas with a state-of-the-art 

fishery research facility whose staff of research 

biologists and technicians conducts a variety 

of applied fishery research studies aimed at 

improving freshwater sport fishing and the integrity 

of the entire aquatic community throughout Texas. 

Heart of the Hills has its roots buried deep in the 

past with the origin 

of Stockman’s 

Springs, one of the 

largest springs in 

Kerr County. Just 

as these springs 

today provide the 

life-giving waters for 

the research station, 

they once supplied 

the Indians of the 

Archaic period (400- 

3,000 years ago) 

as well as weary 

travelers on the Chihuahua Road from Mexico to 

Indianola. 

In 1925, the State of Texas obtained water rights 

to the springs, and thanks to the donation of a 

parcel of land, opened Heart of the Hills Fish 

Hatchery. Water traveled from the springs to the 

hatchery via an earthen canal until 1935, when 

Works Projects Administration undertook the 

building of the present concrete canal system. 

From 1925 until 1969, Heart of the Hills served 

as a production hatchery, producing largemouth 

bass, channel catfish and bluegills for statewide 

stocking programs. Hatchery staff consisted of 

a superintendent and two technicians. In the 

early years, the grounds were even used to raise 

deer to support wildlife stocking programs. In 

1969, with financial support from the Federal Aid 

in Sport Fish Restoration Act, Heart of the Hills 

became a fisheries research station. A research

staff was formed by bringing in several biologists 

and technicians from fisheries management 

districts across the state. Many of the original 

hatchery ponds were reconfigured and buildings 

were reworked to create indoor laboratories. An 

office building, shop, and storage building for field 

equipment were also added. 

Today, Heart of the Hills is complete with a staff 

of highly trained fisheries researchers supported 

by an array of outdoor ponds, several indoor 

laboratories and a variety of field-sampling 

equipment. Individual research studies deal with 

topics ranging from fish age and growth, behavior, 

ecology, genetics, modeling and reproduction, and 

involve species ranging from the most common 

sport fishes to the rare, endangered species. 

Though much of the research is conducted 

right in the station, many studies are carried out 

elsewhere in Texas. Heart of the Hills is open for 

public tours 8-5, Monday-Friday. Large groups are 

advised to call in advance, (830) 866-3356, to 

schedule a convenient time.
