WELCOME TO SINGAPORE
On behalf of EP-SI, I would like to welcome
you to the World Summit Award Social Innovation
Congress 2016 in Singapore. We are happy to
be the presenting sponsor for the Congress. EP-SI
fund is uniquely positioned to address pressing
social ills through strategic partnerships with
businesses – businesses that are socially innovative.
My role is to mobilise fund allocation in supporting
business to drive social change. I’m an activist,
who advocates for business and capitalism to
take a leading role in positively influencing the
shape of social landscape.
I hope we can all work together to create a true
digital economy where everyone will benefit
from it. I wish you all the best for the Award and
hope to see you again.
I have been mentoring Singapore start-ups
over 20 years. The local innovation framework is
rapidly maturing toward global perspectives as a
single ecosystem, which is only as good as the influences
that shape it.
WSA adds the global perspective and diaspora
effect to understanding what makes an effective
effort, connected or standalone. Cultural nuances
can only be understood within the immersive cooperation
of the meeting of minds and sharing of
learnings, for a truly united passion to do good.
Education and Employability -
Singtel Enabling Innovation Centre
Besides education support for children with
special needs, we have extended our focus
to include training needs of persons with
disabilities so that they will be equipped and
ready to join the workforce.
In 2014, we worked closely with national
agency SG Enable and set up the Singtel
Enabling Innovation Centre (EIC) in the
Enabling Village in Singapore. The centre
was launched in October 2015 to help young
people with special needs in Singapore
prepare for their transition to the workforce
offers customised training in the area of
ICT and contact centre operations and also
new technology solutions for persons with
disabilities. The Singtel EIC also brought in
assistive technologies from around the world
that enable persons with disabilities to be
productive at work, acting as a showcase for
both potential users and employers.
We committed about S$2 million to build
and fund the operations of Singtel EIC,
including the development of specialised
curriculum, training and transition to work
support for the next three years. Our staff
volunteers contributed their expertise in
the area of call centre management system
selection and training curriculum.
Supporting Innovation
for Social Impact
We believe that innovation and technology
can be catalysts for social change. During
the year, we launched our social innovation
programmes across Singapore and Australia
to build an ecosystem to attract and develop
innovators and changemakers who could
that we support. These programmes
provided funding, mentoring, acceleration
and incubation support for these social
entrepreneurs.
Singtel became a strategic partner to
the Enabling Change Social Innovation
Programme in February 2015. Enabling
technology incubator programme that
supported the growth of persons with
disabilities. The programme had ten weeks
of incubation. 30 changemakers formed
11 teams to engage various segments of
the community with an initial focus on the
disability sector. They then came up with
solutions to address pressing issues such as
mobility, hearing impairment, mental health
and caregiver support. Singtel provided seed
funding of S$10,000 each to 6 start-ups and
supported Enabling Change’s IT capacitybuilding
programme. The start-ups also
received access to partner organisations,
start-ups and social entrepreneur mentors.
The Optus Future Makers programme
will incubate and mentor a maximum
of 12 organisations in the coming year,
providing funding for six social start-ups
with up to A$50,000 each for their ideas
difference in the community.
PATRON STATEMENTS
Young people are powerful drivers of
change in political, economic and social developments
around the world. They have asserted
themselves as critical partners in sustainable development,
proposing innovative solutions to
the world’s most pressing challenges. Using the
power of ICTs and social media, young people
have a vehicle like never before to engage and
participate. From entrepreneurs developing new
technologies, to creating green jobs and more
sustainable economies, young people are at the
forefront of development. We must continue to
recognise the valuable contributions of young
entrepreneurs and work together to ensure the
success of the Sustainable Development Goals
by 2030.
Local content is indispensable for the use of
information and communication technologies
for sustainable development. With the
recognition of innovative, digital solutions to
development challenges, the World Summit
Awards (WSA) encourages women and men’s
creativity, helps to share applications globally
and stimulates young entrepreneurs to find local
solutions. I congratulate all finalists, who
contributed with their innovations to peace and
sustainable development.
STORYTELLING FOR IMPACT
by Red Bull Amaphiko
29th June, 4pm and 1st July, 1pm Grand Ballroom 3
Strong stories are powerful.
Telling your story in the right way allows you to
utilize this power, cut through the noise and
grow your impact.
We start with a quick introduction to storytelling
theory, followed by highly interactive exercises
with a focus on translating those theoretical
learnings into actionable practices to tell your
BUILDING A TRIBE THAT MATTERS
by Zikry Kholil from The Incitement, Malysia
1st July, 1pm Grand Ballroom 2
Ever heard this myth where “Build it and they
will come”? Well if you build it with a vision
and purpose that resonates with many, then
that’s when you’re doing it right. Anyone can
start a movement, anyone can create a cause. But
if you want to build more than a passive, super
proactive community it will take guts, sweat and
heart. A community of raving, die-hard members
is never built over night. Despite the hard work,
there are many benefits to creating a thriving, enduring
tribe.
In this Workshop in Building a Tribe that Matters,
we will teach you how to start your
very own tribe, your movement,
your cause right from your seat.
The most important part here
is where we will show you
how you could make great
use of your tribe in taking
assertive action and let
it grow organically
bit by bit.
The Grand Jury 2015 had a hard task to tackle when they
started to verify the contestants of the WSA 2015. More than 100
participating countries delivered over 400 innovative digital applications,
tackling local challenges.
The delegation of the Grand Jury has been invited to Azerbaijan by
the Innovation Centers Azerbaijan and took place at the beautiful
campus of ADA university.
19 international ICT-professionals evaluated in a democratic process,
moderated by WSA chairman Prof. Bruck and decided after tough
discussions on the fourty WSA winners 2015.
Hosting the WSA, the Asan Innovation Center and its partners leveraged
the presence of the WSA Grand Jury to hold the first WSA
Innovation Forum in Azerbaijan. Local stakeholders discussed
with the Grand Jury members how to introduce the concept of innovation
& entrepreneurship in Azerbaijan and how to encourage
GRAND JURY
Dana Al Salem, Founder Fan-
Factory, UK about the WSA Grand
Jury in Baku, Azerbaijan
“What I love about the WSA
and the reason why I find it so
different are the people, the
unbelievable diversity of
cultures and the different
experiences that everyone
brings to the table in terms of
their decision making process
and the approaches being so
extraordinary and unique. It
creates an incredible environment
of learning and debating
which is a really, really
enriching experience.”
Jean Luc Scherer from Ericsson
MENA about the importance of
the WSA for cooperate companies
“The WSA is a very interesting
Organization because it gives us a
visibility on what is happening
globally in the entrepreneurship
and innovation ecosystem. We
have companies and startups from
all over the world; from different
backgrounds; from different
countries. And this is very
interesting for large companies;
companies like Ericsson, where
basically we can get a view on the
real needs of our end costumers.
So we talk a lot about the network
society and about everything is
getting connected, but what is
really important is what our
people want. And basically the
WSA helps us to reconnect with
what young people around the
world want and expect from
today’s technologies.”
Kamran Agasi, Director Asan
Innovation Center about the
experience of hosting the WSA
Grand Jury in Azerbaijan
“I think Azerbaijan and Baku in
particular became an attractive
point to host international events.
We are very glad to host this WSA
Event in Baku and I hope this is a
very good beginning for long term
cooperation between the WSA and
Azerbaijan. What we have done in
the recent years… We developed a
successful model of public service
delivery at ASAN Centers and we
are willing to share this unique
model with the rest of the world.
But we also would like to tap to
the international community to
see all the new solutions and new
technologies and to bring them to
Azerbaijan for the benefits of our
citizens.”
