Welcome From Our Superintendent: 

A successful student-athlete is one who’s given the opportunity to excel in 

every area of his or her school life – academically, socially, emotionally and 

physically. This happens when the entire school community comes together 

to ensure that our students have every option open to them. 

LISD’s extracurricular programs are extensions of our classrooms because 

they offer dynamic learning opportunities that prepare students for healthy, 

happy lives while they are in school and later in life. Our student-athletes are 

growing skill sets in leadership, teamwork and discipline. They are learning 

valuable lessons on persistence, communication and commitment. They 

are learning that the harder they work, the better they perform. And while 

the time and energy our athletes spend reaching for success are important, 

we also want our students to have fun, give their best effort and always 

demonstrate good sportsmanship in the spirit of friendly competition. These are the experiences that will 

shape our students into tomorrow’s leaders. 

And they don’t do it alone. Behind each student are their families, friends, teachers and coaches who 

are cheering them on as they set high standards and work to reach for their goals. 

Once again, I thank you for being here today. These athletes have worked hard to be here, and your 

support means a great deal to our students and to our programs. 

I am honored to work with our Board of Trustees in a district filled with talented students and dedicated 

parents. Together we are all leading our students to a bright future.

Dear Parents and Community Members: 

Welcome to Leander ISD’s contest tonight. On behalf of all of the hard-working and dedicated 

student participants, their devoted coaches, and the Leander ISD Athletic Department, thank you 

for supporting and attending these great high school events. We are excited about another great 

year and understand that without your support of these wonderful activities, none of this would be 

possible. 

We certainly want our teams to win, but please remember that the primary purpose of athletics is to 

help to train young people in all areas of life. We encourage and promote academic and athletic 

success, and our programs should reflect characteristics such as integrity, sportsmanship, courage, 

teamwork, selflessness, and maximum effort while providing the tools necessary for our young 

people to move forward in their lives as productive adults. 

The true measure of success will come as these students graduate and move into our society as 

knowledgeable, caring, and productive citizens of our great community, state, and country.

“Second to None”

Dear Friends, 

On behalf of the faculty and staff of Vandegrift High School, welcome to the Ed W. Monroe Memorial 

Stadium and the exciting start of a new year of Viper 5A varsity football. Tonight, two high school 

communities have come together to share in the rich tradition that is Texas high school football. On any 

Friday night in our great state, you can find one place where people can still come together to celebrate a 

love for football and to witness the purity of high school athletic competition.

Although we live in a time where professional sports offer few role models for our young people, tonight, we 

know we have the spirit of a true hero among us. Vandegrift High School is named in honor of Lt. Matthew 

Ryan Vandegrift, a Leander High School honors graduate (Class of 1999) and athlete – who was killed in Iraq 

in April 2008. He graduated from Texas A&M University with Honors and a degree in International Business, 

before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in August 2005. He was killed just four days past his 28th 

birthday. 

Like many of our students, Matthew grew up in the Steiner Ranch subdivision — very near this high school 

and stadium. He was an honor graduate at both the high school and college level, and a fierce competitor 

who participated in numerous extracurricular activities. Matthew always demonstrated the highest 

character, plus a devotion to service demonstrated by the fact that he volunteered to defend the ideals 

of our great nation. Matthew Vandegrift was a walking role model for what we hope to see demonstrated 

by each and every Leander ISD graduate. As such, the Vandegrift football team asked to officially retire 

Matthew’s football jersey number #07 to honor his memory and to inspire future VHS athletes. 

Just like Matthew, the young men and women of VHS - the marching band, The Legacies drill team, 

cheerleaders, and student athletes will walk on the field and give us their all. Tonight, take a moment to 

remember Matthew---breathe in the autumn air, and share in the celebration of life that will play out before 

us tonight. At the end of the game, I invite you to join in with us as we sing our Alma Mater, and you will 

know why at VHS we know---We’ll Never Walk Alone.

Dear Drew, 

The most honored tradition of Viper 

football is the “Touching of the 

Sword” prior to taking the field on 

Friday night. Before every varsity 

game, all of the Viper players and 

coaches touch the special case 

holding the officer sword that 

belonged to Matthew Vandegrift and 

was generously donated to us by 

the Vandegrift family. The following 

is a letter that I received from Dutch 

Vandegrift, Matthew’s father. I 

believe it perfectly explains why this 

sword means so much to our team. 

Coach Drew Sanders 

I just wanted you to know how much Mary Jane and I enjoyed the entire Homecoming event. Your 

team did an outstanding job and I want to congratulate y’all again. After my presentation to the 

team, I followed them out of the field house. I was the 

last one in line to touch the case in which Matthew’s 

officer’s sword is displayed. I shed a tear. I was a little 

overwhelmed as I thought of Matthew and a memory 

associated with the sword.

Mary Jane and I were visiting with him at his home near 

Camp LeJeune, North Carolina just prior to his Iraq 

deployment. During our visit, Matthew showed me the 

sword. I could tell it meant a lot to him. It represented all 

of the years of hard work he had invested in becoming an 

Officer of Marines. His exemplary performance at Texas 

A&M; his struggle to overcome his ACL injury that he was 

told would prevent him from ever achieving his goal; 

completing Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Quantico, 

Virginia and then The Basic School (TBS); and then the 

proud day his Mom pinned his Second Lieutenant bars on.

All captured in that sword that you, your staff and young 

men show so much respect and honor. As I looked at the 

sword, I remember him standing there holding it. It was 

one of the proudest moments in my life. He was not only 

my son; we were now brothers in arms in defense of our 

great Nation and I realized that he felt his efforts were not 

in vain. 

As I told the team last night, I see some of Matthew in 

all of them. They each possess the potential to do great 

things. This nation and the world need young men who 

will lead; young men who will endure and not quit. Thanks again for everything you do. I feel that I 

am a part of your winning team and that makes me very proud.

Matthew Vandegrift grew up in the 

Steiner Ranch subdivision – very near 

the high school that bears his name. He 

participated in extracurricular activities, 

and demonstrated the highest character, 

plus a devotion to service demonstrated by 

the fact that he volunteered to defend the 

ideals of our great nation. 

Vandegrift graduated from Leander High 

School in 1999. He was an athlete and 

honor student. After high school, Vandegrift 

graduated with honors from Texas A&M 

University with a degree in International 

Business. 

It was out of respect for his country and for 

his father, a former Marine, that Vandegrift 

joined the military in 2005. 

His mother describes her son as a 

charismatic child who grew into a caring 

man, someone who was determined to 

better the lives of those around him. 

Vandegrift joined the Marine Corps on 

March 23, 2005, and was assigned to 

the 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment 

on September 14, 2006. Their motto was 

“Second to None,” which VHS has now 

adopted as the school motto. 

He deployed to Iraq on August 21, 2007, 

and died on April 21, 2008. 

His decorations include the Iraqi Campaign 

Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, 

the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, 

and the Nation Defense Service Medal.


Tex Kassen 

Sportsmanship Trophy 

The Vandegrift Vipers won the coveted 

“Tex Kassen Sportsmanship Trophy” in 

2014 for their work on and off the field. 

This prestigious award has been handed 

out for several years for “exemplary 

conduct on and off the field.” This 

award is given by the Austin Chapter 

of The National Football Foundation 

and College Hall of Fame. This award 

is voted on by the Austin Chapter of 

football officials. Coach Sanders is 

pictured with Cody Brigham, class of 

2014. Cody played cornerback for the 

Vandegrift Vipers and was the nominee 

for Vandegrift that evening at the award 

dinner that recognizes scholar athletes in 

the Austin area. Congratulations Vipers 

and the entire Four Points community for 

the amazing award!

Viperpalooza 

The idea for Viperpalooza was 

sparked by Admin Asst. Phyllis 

Boddorf in 2010, as a way of 

bringing the community together. 

It has evolved into a huge event 

involving almost all of our school 

groups, and 2015 participation 

and community involvement were 

at an all time high! 

All of our school groups participate 

in a carnival prior to the game, 

and then it culminates in the Viper 

spring game. 

We also added “Glory Days” 

in 2013, which is a flag football 

grudge match between the dads 

of current and past Viper Football 

players. 

Viperpalooza has become one 

of the premier events in the Four 

Points area. 

2015 Football Camps 

Coach Sanders and his staff host four football 

camps for the youth in the Four Points area. Over 

500 kids enrolled in a Viper Football Camp this 

past summer. Go Vipers!


Elementary Blitz 

It’s important for our football players to learn how 

to serve the community. Elementary Blitz is just 

one of the many service projects the Vipers do. A 

large group of Viper football players will visit each 

of the five elementary schools in the Vandegrift 

attendance zone and brighten their day with 

reading their favorite book, signing autographs, 

and answering questions. It’s been a tradition 

since 2009 and it’s benefited both elementary 

students and Viper football players!

The inaugural Viper Strike Open golf 

tournament, created by our Football 

Booster Club to raise funds for the football 

teams at VHS, had over 75 participants.

The Laurie Giles 

Volunteer of the Year Award 

We lost Laurie Giles in 2011 after a courageous battle against 

cancer. 

Laurie epitomized the heart of a Viper Volunteer so 

much so that an award was created in her honor. 

Her service and love for Viper Football lives on in 

volunteers like 2014’s Laurie Giles Volunteer of the 

Year Award recipient, Stacy Cooley Carr.

Dear Viper Fans, 

Here we are again! The 7th year of Viper Football. It’s been fun being 

part of building the Viper brand in the Austin football community, but 

it’s also been a lot of work. We’ve gone from playing JV football to a 

perennial playoff program in a very quick time. Not only did we qualify 

for the post-season again, we finished with our most season wins and 

tied for district champions in one of the toughest districts in the state. We 

are so proud of our young men and what they have accomplished. But 

we are not done. 

This year is critical for our program development as we need to take 

the next step in establishing our program across the state. And the next 

step is high. Our rise to competitiveness in football has been strong, but 

we are hungry for more. This year we will take that next step. And in 

order to do this, it will take all of us. That includes not only the team and 

coaches, but also the parents, administration and fans. With all of our 

football family pushing in the same direction, we can’t be stopped! 

If you have a son in our football program, you also know that we stand 

for much more than just a football game. We teach our young men about discipline, toughness, 

effort and honor! It is a tough thing to play football and a huge commitment. We also emphasize 

all of these traits with all of our many service projects in the community throughout the season. We 

build wheelchair ramps for the homebound, mentor youth in the community, and even help coach 

Pop Warner teams all in the name of putting someone else before our self! It’s about helping the 

parents build men of honor. 

We truly want to thank you for coming to tonight’s game. Tonight’s competition is not just a football 

game, but much more. It is a compilation of many people’s effort. From coaches, to boosters, 

to band leaders, to cheerleaders, to dance team, to administrators, to players and finally to the 

parents, it is truly a team effort. As you leaf through the program, you will notice many sponsors.

without their generous support. We also could not have accomplished any of this without our 

outstanding leadership in our School Board and our L.I.S.D. administrators who value athletics and

Who was the biggest influence on you as a football player? Two people shaped me as 

a player and coach in my life. The first is my high school coach, Paul Hurst in Mexia, TX. He 

was tough but caring. Could rep out 225 like it was nothing, played LB at Baylor. Happy 

every single day that he got to be around kids. I try to be like him. I still talk to Coach Hurst 

and am thankful for his influence on my life. The second influence was my college head 

coach, Jimmie Keeling. He is in the THSCA Hall of Fame and is one of the most famous high 

school coaches in Texas history. It was an honor to play for him. He taught me how to be 

specific and coach for detail. He was full of confidence and we always thought we could 

win as long as he was our coach. On top of that he was a wonderful person. Both of these 

Godly men shaped me into the coach I am today.

How did you and Coach Sanders meet? What would you say makes your marriage successful? Coach Sanders 

and I met in college at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX, and we have been married for 17 years. What 

makes our marriage successful is God and trying to put Him first instead of ourselves. 

Describe a typical weekend in the Sanders household: Friday: As soon as the kids get home from school we are 

putting all of our Viper gear on and getting in the car. I like to get to the games as early as I can, so we are leaving 

the house ASAP. I usually have trouble eating dinner because I am so nervous! We usually don’t get home until 

11:00 pm or later, and Coach comes in later than that. When we win, we stay up late talking all about the game. If 

we lose, he generally goes straight to bed. Saturday: Coach leaves early for work and film watching on the next 

opponent. My day consists of getting the kids to all of their sports activities. Coach tries to come if he can, especially 

if it is close to the high school. On Saturday evenings, we do one of two things: if we win, we go out to dinner 

to celebrate. If we lose, we mope around the house and eat leftovers. Sunday: We go to church as a family in the 

morning (even though Coach at times falls asleep or draws plays) and then Coach heads off to perfect his game 

plan at the office and the kids and I hang out and get ready for the week. Sunday night we usually get to have 

dinner together and regroup before the school week starts again. 

Sanders’ family priorities: faith, family, football 

How are you able to keep your family’s priorities straight as you balance all of your crazy 

schedules? It’s almost impossible. There are a lot of times that I want help and need help, but know 

I don’t have it, so we just find a way to get it done. One thing that Drew always does when he gets 

home is hang out with the kids and give them some quality time. But as Mom of the house, I feel like 

it’s my job to balance my job, my family and support Drew so he can do what he loves (and I love 

too!). And that includes at times having to wake Drew up in church! But it has been so much fun 

over the past 17 years of 

moving around and being 

around wonderful families 

and kids. 

What’s your favorite thing 

about being married to a 

head coach? I like it all! But 

I would have to say that my 

favorite thing is watching him 

get to do something he is so 

passionate about, and that 

is to love and teach young 

men. 

What would you say are 

Coach’s best qualities? I 

would say one of Drew’s best 

qualities is how much he 

cares about our family. His 

time is so limited in season 

and when he’s home, he 

really focuses on us. He’ll 

take time to play Barbies with Sadie or talk with Caleb and Matt, even if he is behind on his game plan. Another 

thing I admire about Drew is how good he is with people. He has a way to get along with everybody. He’s so 

patient and kind with people, no matter what. And most of all, I admire the way he has passion about his job 

and how happy he is every day.

Who was the biggest influence on 

you as a football player? My dad, 

Bill Mouser, played a huge part in 

influencing me to choose the coaching 

profession. He allowed my brother 

and me to come to practices and be 

on the sidelines during games growing 

up. This developed my love for the 

game and modeled the impact that a 

positive coach could have on a school 

and community. In addition, Coach 

Danny Rogers (Head Coach, Blanco, TX), who coached me from PE when I was 

in elementary school until I graduated high school. I was his manager growing 

up on the sideline and he trusted me as a junior high kid to help him chart plays 

during games. This responsibility made me competitive to learn the schemes of 

the game. On top of that he was a great motivator and a very smart coach that 

enabled our school to be successful.

Coach Tammy Jones hails from the “Show Me State” and received her 

Bachelors of Science in psychology from the University of Missouri-GO 

TIGERS! Upon graduation she studied education at West Texas A&M 

University-GO BUFFS! She now lives in Austin with her husband Chad, and 

her most amazing 3 1/2 year old boy, Tanner…the absolute joy of her life! 

Coach Jones has over 14 years of experience in the cheer industry, 8 years 

head coaching experience as well as 6 years of competitive cheerleading 

herself. This will be her 9th year of teaching and 3rd year at Vandegrift. 

Coach Jones firmly believes that personal and team success come from 

setting your goals high, doing the everyday work to get better, accepting 

temporary setbacks, and continuously improving to recover from those 

setbacks. In the end, the work is worth it! I cannot wait to watch these 

talented young ladies achieve their dreams of cheering at the football 

games and winning a national championship…GO VIPERS!

University for college and 

shortly after graduation 

moved to Austin, Texas. 

She studied Journalism/

Coach Wilson is the JV coach. She has 9 years of 

experience as a cheerleading coach from ages of 5 -18. 

This is her 3rd year as Coach Jones’ asst., 7th year in the 

district and 3rd year at Vandegrift. 

She believes a successful coach is able to create a team 

atmosphere that consists of players that are willing to work 

hard, build positive reputations through one another and 

are able reach their ultimate potential while having fun. 

And that it is important to strive to always do better than 

you did yesterday.

Leander ISD and established the dance program there in 2009. She is 

the Head Director for the Vandegrift High School Legacies Dance Team 

& Program Director for the dance guard, Vision Dance Company. The 

Legacies have won numerous regional and state level competitions, 

have performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the 

McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago. Vision Dance 

Company works within the Viper Band and has won numerous regional 

titles and together they are the 2013 UIL 4A State Marching Band 

Champions. 

Holly is the former Owner and Creative Director of The Element: New 

Braunfels Dance Center. Prior to opening her studio, she directed the 

Canyon High School Aristocat Dance Team and Canyon High School 

Dance Department in Comal County. She has instructed all levels of 

dance throughout Texas and the Central US since 1989. 

Holly is a former member of the World Famous Kilgore College 

Rangerettes and served as a Lieutenant her sophomore year. She is 

a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University where she earned a 

Bachelor of Science in Dance and Kinesiology, and was a member 

of the SFA Pom Squad and SFA Repertory Dance Company. Holly has 

instructed for American Dance/Drill Team for 21 years and has served in 

both leadership and executive roles. 

Throughout her 20+ years of dance training, Holly has performed in 

the Texas State Fair with Willie Nelson, Cotton Bowl Halftime Performances, Houston Rockets Halftime Performances, Texas 

Governor George W. Bush’s Inaugural Parade and Gala, World Cup Soccer Opening Ceremonies, Euro Disney in Paris, 

France, and Carnival in Nice, France. She has assisted with the MMA & Spirit of America All Star Dance Team Performances 

in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and was featured in an article regarding leadership with dance teams in the 

November 2003 issue of the nationally circulated Dance Spirit Magazine. Holly is a Past President of the Texas Dance 

Educators’ Association, and has been a member TDEA for 11 years. 

She has been married to her husband, John, for 15 years and they have 3 children: 12 year old twins, Abigail & Jackson, and 

9 year old William. 

Katie Reeves, 

Assistant Director 

Katie is the current Assistant Director of the Vandegrift High School Legacies 

Dance Team. She is a Cedar Park High School graduate and former 1st 

Lieutenant of the Celebrities Dance Team. Katie spent two years as a member 

of the 69th line of World Famous Kilgore College Rangerettes and was 

selected as a Swingster. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University 

where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Dance Education. 

Over the years, Katie has performed in events at the Houston Museum of 

Fine Arts, Medal of Arts Ceremony in Austin, Tremblay Financial Bowl in Santa 

Barbara, California, AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas, Royal Caribbean 

Cruise Line featured performances, and at the 2009 Texas State Society Black 

Tie & Boots Inaugural Ball in Washington DC. 

Katie has taught and judged all levels of dance throughout Texas as a staff 

member with American Dance/Drill Team. Her choreography has won 

numerous awards and has been featured in convention Faculty Shows. 

Katie served as a college assistant at the Texas Dance Educators Association 

convention under Radio City Music Hall Rockette Summyr Whaley and is a 

current member of TDEA and Third Coast Contemporary company based in 

Austin.

MIKE HOWARD, DIRECTOR OF BANDS 

Mr. Howard is in currently in his 7th year at Vandegrift High School and in 

his 13th year of teaching high school band. He was one of the founding 

directors of the band when VHS opened in 2009 and became Head Band 

Director in the Fall of 2014. While at Vandegrift, Mr. Howard’s bands have 

been consistent UIL Concert Competition Sweepstakes Award Winners. He 

has also been instrumental in several marching band high honors such as 

BOA Regional Champion, BOA Super Regional Finalist, BOA Super Regional 

Class Champion, multiple innovational marching contest championships, 

UIL State Marching Contest Finalist and 4A UIL State Marching Contest 

Champion. At Vandegrift, Mr. Howard is the director of the Viper Marching 

Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band. 

Aside from being the Director of Bands at VHS, Mr. Howard is an active 

Leadership Consultant and Workshop Presenter. He has been a facilitator 

and marching instructor for SASI for the last 10 years. In this time, Mr. Howard 

has had the opportunity to work with thousands of students and directors 

from around the United States. As a lead facilitator for SASI, he is heavily 

involved with the operations of all Drum Major camps as well as teaching 

several site-based workshops throughout the summer. This summer alone, Mr. Howard presented workshops 

around Texas, Missouri, Illinois and Connecticut. 

Before coming to Vandegrift, Mr. Howard taught at James E. Taylor High School in Katy, Texas. As Associate 

Director of the JE Taylor HS Band his responsibilities included directing the Marching and Jazz Programs, 

conducting the Concert Band, and coordinating and teaching the drumline. Mr. Howard, a native of Hondo, 

TX, started his teaching career at Morton Ranch High School, where he was a band director and helped open 

the school in 2004. At Morton Ranch, he taught the Concert Band, Jazz Band, assisted with the marching band. 

Before teaching at Morton Ranch, Mr. Howard was an instructor for the Cedar Park High School Band in Cedar 

Park, Texas and an instructor for the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps from Madison, Wisconsin. As a 

performer, Mr. Howard has performed with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps, the Austin Symphony 

Orchestra, the Austin Lyric Opera and several bands around the Austin/San Antonio area. Mr. Howard 

graduated from Texas State University in San Marcos, Summa Cum Laude, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music 

Education.

STEPHANIE GROTE 

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF BANDS 

Mrs. Grote is beginning her fourth year as 

Associate Director of Bands at Vandegrift 

High School. At Vandegrift, Mrs. Grote 

enjoys teaching the Symphonic Winds, 

and team teaching Concert Band 2. Mrs. 

Grote is responsible for coordinating the 

Inventory, as well as organizing the annual 

Vandegrift High School Solo Competition. 

Mrs. Grote previously taught at Canyon 

Ridge Middle School for two years, within 

the Vandegrift cluster. Mrs. Grote’s concert 

bands at both the middle school and high school level have consistently 

received Superior ratings at the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest. 

Mrs. Grote graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of North Texas 

in 2010. While at North Texas, Mrs. Grote served as Drum Major of the Green 

Brigade Marching Band for 3 years, and performed in the Wind Symphony 

under Eugene Migliaro Corporon. Mrs. Grote studied trumpet with John 

Holt, principal trumpet of the Dallas Opera Orchestra. An active participant 

in Drum Corps International, Mrs. Grote marched from 2007-2009 with the 

Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, of Santa Clara, California. 

Mrs. Grote served as Drum Major during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. She 

remains the only female Head Drum Major in the 48 year history of the 

Santa Clara Vanguard. In 2009, she was the recipient of the Jim Jones 

Leadership Award, which is given annually to one world class drum major by 

the DCI Hall of Fame. 

PAUL PAPE 

DIRECTOR OF PERCUSSION 

Paul Pape is currently in his 6th year as 

the Percussion Director at Vandegrift High 

School in Austin, TX. During his tenure at 

VHS the percussion section has been highly 

successful in many areas of percussion 

performance including individual, percussion 

ensemble, and marching percussion. The 

VHS Drumline, under the direction of Mr. 

Pape, has received numerous awards and 

honors across the state, including first 

place finishes at several drumline contests, 

numerous band festival caption awards, and two finalist appearances at the 

prestigious Lone Star Drumline Contest. In addition, Mr. Pape has been an integral 

part of the success of the VHS Marching Band helping the group earn several 

accolades including BOA Regional Class Championships, BOA Super Regional 

Finalist placements, BOA Super Regional Class Championships and the 2014 

Texas 4A State Marching Band Championship. 

Before coming to VHS Mr. Pape served as the Percussion Director for Cedar 

Park HS from 2008-2010 where his students earned numerous individual and 

group awards including the 2008 PASIC Championship and the 2009 Lone Star 

Drumline Contest Championship. Prior to his time at Cedar Park High School, Mr. 

Pape began his career as an Assistant Band Director and Percussion Director at 

Georgetown High School from 2002-2008 where his bands received superior 

ratings and his percussion sections were consistently successful. His GHS 

Drumline was also awarded the 2006 PASIC Championship & Fred Sanford 

Award as well as the 2006 Lone Star Drumline Contest Championship. 

Paul is a 2001 graduate of Southwest Texas State University, earning a Bachelor 

of Music degree. As a performer, Paul has performed with the Austin Symphony 

Orchestra, the Austin Lyric Opera and several bands around the Austin/San 

Antonio area.

KATY ROZACKY 

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF BANDS 

Ms. Rozacky joins us from Round Rock High 

School where she served as an Assistant 

Director of Bands, teaching both the third 

and the fourth concert bands. Originally 

from the Austin area, Ms. Rozacky went to 

Cedar Park High School and student-taught 

at Vandegrift High School and Four Points 

Middle School. Prior to teaching at Round 

Rock High School, Ms. Rozacky lived in the 

Denton, Texas where she attended college 

and was a marching instructor for the 

Marcus High School band for four years. Ms. Rozacky graduated Summa Cum 

Laude from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music 

Education. 

During her time at North Texas, Ms. Rozacky performed in a number of 

ensembles, including the Wind Symphony under the direction of Eugene 

Migliaro Corporon, and the Green Brigade Marching Band, where she both 

performed and was a field instructor during her three years with the band. Ms. 

Rozacky is an active educator in Drum Corps International. After marching with 

Carolina Crown from 2008-2012, Ms. Rozacky joined the brass staff in 2013 

and is currently teaching the mellophone section. Ms. Rozacky is very excited 

to be a Vandegrift Viper! 

CANDICE SPRADLIN 

VISION DANCE COMPANY 

Candice Spradlin is the Director and 

Choreographer of the Vision Dance 

Company, now in her fifth year with VHS 

Vision and the Leander Independent School 

District. Originally from Arkansas, Mrs. 

Spradlin considers Texas her home—where 

she spent much of her upbringing in Austin, 

Texas, graduating from and performing 

in the colorguard of nearby McNeil High 

School. She graduated with a Bachelor 

of Arts degree in Dance from Texas State 

University. Over the course of her collegiate 

studies, Mrs. Spradlin marched with the Bobcat Marching Band for two seasons 

as a member of the colorguard and with Millennia Independent Winterguard 

for 4 years. She marched in the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, a prestigious 

nonprofit organization focused on music education based in Canton, Ohio. In 

her career as an educator and dance instructor, Mrs. Spradlin has taught at 

Hendrickson HS, Leander HS, Anderson HS, and Round Rock HS. She taught for 

the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps based in Phoenix, Arizona. She is an active 

member of the Solutions and Specialized Innovations (SASI) group, based in 

Austin, Texas, through which she teaches new techniques and leadership skills as 

the Colorguard and Dance Director.
