2015 June Program

Welcome from the Directors

Thank you for joining us in a joyful celebration of the end of another wonderful year of working with our students from our

General, Competitive and Pre-Professional Programs. What an honour it is to be part of the development of these special

young artists, from ages 5 to 19 who are going to be presenting their work.

Pro Arté Centre is best known for its commitment to providing holistic and inspired training to young dancers intending to

pursue a career in dance as well as offering a variety of classes for students who dance for the love of the art. Established

over a decade ago, its graduates have been accepted into dance programs and companies within Canada, the United States

and Europe including, to name a few, Juilliard, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, Ballet BC, Le Jeune

Ballet du Québec, Rambert, Ballet Jorgen, Purchase College, Lines Ballet Program, Ryerson University Dance Program,

Sheridan College and Toronto Dance Theatre.

This year has been exciting year. The CatchingART Contemporary Ballet Theatre (Pro Arte’s aspirant company) had a

very successful third year and performed with Pandora’s Vox, Yarilo Music, the Lion’s Gate Sinfonia and Education without

Borders in addition to their own season which included performances in Zurich and Sofia this May. Together with the students

of the Upper School Pre-Professional Programs at Pro Arte Centre, they were honoured with the distinction of performing

new works by Michael Conway Baker, OBC, and presented his work as well as excerpts from Sleeping Beauty and other

noteworthy guest choreographers including Megan Walker-Straight (SFU, Cunningham), Alex Ossadnik (Ballet Idaho, Ballet

Pro Musica) and Charla Genn (Juilliard). Performing excerpts from the Nutcracker and other new works with the Lions Gate

Youth Sinfonia this past Christmas was another first for the Upper School and a highlight of the holiday season! Also exciting

is the achievements of our students including our 6 Provincial Representatives (Laura Renstad, Winner Senior Stage; Ashley

Klockow, Winner, Intermediate Ballet; Sophie Leone-Schultz, Runner-Up, Intermediate Ballet; Cassia Slager, Honourable

Mention, Intermediate Ballet; Lauren Middlemass, Honourable Mention, Intermediate Modern; Brianna Nyland, Junior Stage)

and our 6 Provincial Alternates (Ethan Ponton, Senior Modern; Sophie Derome, Intermediate Modern; Larissa McFarlane,

Intermediate Modern; Kay Budworth, Intermediate Ballet; Sophie Higgins, Intermediate Ballet; Taylor Nepomuceno, Junior

Ballet). Ms. Kim’s Choreography “Where From Here” was awarded the coveted Critics Choice Award at NYCDA and will be

performing in New York in July. Other honours included Outstanding Dancers Awards to Danielle Lee Hogervorst, Katrina

McKinnon, Lauren Middlemass, Isabella Pavelescu, Ethan Ponton, Laura Renstad and Asia Sinnes. YAGP was also a

success for Pro Arte students this year including Finalists Sophie Higgins, Kay Budworth, Ashley Klockow and Sophie

Leone-Schultz who also represented Pro Arte Centre at the New York Finals in April. We also celebrate the accomplishments

of our students at the inaugural RAD Challenge in which Kay Budworth and Margot Lorette were overall winners in the two

categories of the competition with placings going to Anja Fanslau, Kira Fanslau, Sophie Higgins, Ashley Klockow, Michaela

Moore, and Taylor Nepomuceno.

The end of each year is bittersweet as we say “good bye” to those students who are graduating this year. We would like

to thank them for making Pro Arte a part of their journey and wish them well on their path ahead. Best wishes go out to

Alejandra Brossoit, Sophie Curalli, Sascha Essinger, Julia Findlay, Geneva Frampton, Robin Jory, Danielle Lee Hogervorst,

Katie McGregor, Gwyn Moen, Asia Sinnes, Eliyah Slager and Megan Wolrich.

We are extremely proud of all our students, from youngest to oldest. We are excited to showcase all of them today – from

those who participate in one class per week to those who spend many more hours. We hope you gain as much joy from

watching them as we do from teaching.

Our Mandate:

• Advance education in performing arts and the pursuit of its excellence;

• Work together with others to promote innovative forms of education in the arts in

Greater Vancouver;

• Promote interest of the general public in performing arts through community

events; and,

• Cultivate and create career development opportunities for aspiring performing

arts professionals.

Become a partner with us and join us in taking steps together in the direction of training and retaining the

Arts leaders of tomorrow!

allow young artists to aspire to the dream

of dancing as a professional artist. Pro

Arté’s CatchingART Contemporary Ballet

Theatre “company experience” provides

priceless professional learning opportunities

and the development of resume

performances, confidence and proficiency

though unique performance opportunities,

company classes with professional

guest teachers and exposure to working

with various choreographers. Promising

young artists, who are committed to a

career in dance, are selected to be part of

the company each year. These company

artists receive a $2500 training scholarship

(Funded by the Platform Society) to

complete their advanced training level.

Artists must be in Grade 11 or 12 and

have an Advanced 2 level RAD or ISTD

or equivalent level technical capability

and dual proficiency in both classical and
