STAR OPENING<br />
Good luck and thank you to the team at Starbucks<br />
First Street which opened its doors in May after first<br />
making the important decision to choose us as its<br />
chosen charity. Pictured are Manchester Lord Mayor<br />

cutting the ribbon. The store is a franchise outlet<br />
run by Queensway Coffee.<br />
COLOURFUL AND KIND<br />
Staff at B&Q Burnage raised an extremely handy<br />
£3375 over a 12 week period earlier this year.<br />
The impressive sum was raised from an eclectic<br />
mix of in store fundraising activity, including a<br />
‘Dress Like A Scouser Day!’. They also donated<br />
paint which allowed us transform our family room<br />
from a luminous green to a more subdued but still<br />
cheerful, sunshine yellow.<br />
Brief description of your role<br />
and organisation<br />
Carillion is a leading international<br />
support services business with<br />
more than 46,000 staff in the UK,<br />
Canada and the Middle East. I am the Project Director for<br />
the North West Electrification Programme (NWEP) which<br />
is supporting Network Rail and Government plans to<br />
improve the rail infrastructure in the north of England.<br />
Why did you start supporting Wood Street Mission?<br />
NWEP will have a visible presence in Manchester until<br />
the end of 2017. During our time here, we wanted to<br />
contribute to, and support, the local community. Wood<br />
Street Mission’s admirable work tackling child poverty is<br />
something that struck a chord with all the Carillion staff<br />
working on the project.<br />
In what ways are you planning to get involved?<br />
NWEP staff have already established an excellent<br />
reputation following our recent work with The Dogs’<br />
Trust. We intend to repeat that success by providing<br />
volunteers, raising funds and donating useful gifts for<br />
children of all ages.<br />
What does poverty mean to you? I wish that children<br />
and families worldwide could experience the same<br />
comfort, happiness and security that my own children<br />
enjoy.<br />
What would be your Big Idea to help tackle child<br />
poverty? I believe that every act of kindness, every<br />
generous act, whether small or large, whether for one<br />
child or a hundred children, makes a Big Difference and<br />
should be recognised and celebrated as such.<br />

Dignified donation<br />
We have started stocking sanitary<br />
products in our community shop<br />
as they are expensive and difficult<br />
to afford on a low income.<br />

products by Stretford Women’s<br />
Institute. The group wanted to<br />
do something which was both<br />
practical and dignity enhancing<br />
for local women. A big thank you<br />
to everyone there.<br />
