Q&A
KEVIN THOMPSON
Carillion
STAR OPENING
Good luck and thank you to the team at Starbucks
First Street which opened its doors in May after first
making the important decision to choose us as its
chosen charity. Pictured are Manchester Lord Mayor
Carl Austin-Behan and our CEO Roseanne Sweeney
cutting the ribbon. The store is a franchise outlet
run by Queensway Coffee.
COLOURFUL AND KIND
Staff at B&Q Burnage raised an extremely handy
£3375 over a 12 week period earlier this year.
The impressive sum was raised from an eclectic
mix of in store fundraising activity, including a
‘Dress Like A Scouser Day!’. They also donated
paint which allowed us transform our family room
from a luminous green to a more subdued but still
cheerful, sunshine yellow.
Brief description of your role
and organisation
Carillion is a leading international
support services business with
more than 46,000 staff in the UK,
Canada and the Middle East. I am the Project Director for
the North West Electrification Programme (NWEP) which
is supporting Network Rail and Government plans to
improve the rail infrastructure in the north of England.
Why did you start supporting Wood Street Mission?
NWEP will have a visible presence in Manchester until
the end of 2017. During our time here, we wanted to
contribute to, and support, the local community. Wood
Street Mission’s admirable work tackling child poverty is
something that struck a chord with all the Carillion staff
working on the project.
In what ways are you planning to get involved?
NWEP staff have already established an excellent
reputation following our recent work with The Dogs’
Trust. We intend to repeat that success by providing
volunteers, raising funds and donating useful gifts for
children of all ages.
What does poverty mean to you? I wish that children
and families worldwide could experience the same
comfort, happiness and security that my own children
enjoy.
What would be your Big Idea to help tackle child
poverty? I believe that every act of kindness, every
generous act, whether small or large, whether for one
child or a hundred children, makes a Big Difference and
should be recognised and celebrated as such.
Dignified donation
We have started stocking sanitary
products in our community shop
as they are expensive and difficult
to afford on a low income.
Pictured is a fantastic donation of
products by Stretford Women’s
Institute. The group wanted to
do something which was both
practical and dignity enhancing
for local women. A big thank you
to everyone there.
