The

Sandringham

Food & Drink Festival

A great day out for all the family.

Last year the first Sandringham

Food & Drink Festival was billed

as an “Inspirational Event,” and

so it turns out with thousands

of visitors enjoying the food

experience over a glorious

summer weekend.

The chefs enthralled, the wide

diversity of the food and drink

in the Piazza, the music and

general ambience all

contributed to a fabulous day

our for visitors.

Judging by the comments of

the food producers and

retailers, a lot of that festival

spirit was taken home to be

enjoyed later.

With lots of new features and

exhibitors we look forward to

seeing you again this year.

Meet the Chefs

This year there is another impressive

line up of chefs, on the main Food

Theatre stage: Saturday: Theo Randall,

Daniel Clifford Sunday: John Torode,

Lisa Faulkner. Both Days: Holly Bell

and the Crabstock Boys, and on the

Food Roadshow stage the Crabstock

Boys Adi and Andy, Naomi Hansell,

Linda Hewitt and Jimmy Buchan

from the Hit TV series the

Trawlermen.”

Great family entertainment with a

host of interesting and

entertaining features around the

showground, with something for

all members of the family.

The Food Halls - The Festival’s Food Halls

will feature a line up of local and regional

speciality food and drink producers, with

a particular focus on British food

provenance, with locally reared meats,

artisan baking, also with micro

breweries and a real ale marquee.

Real Ales & Ciders - For the real ale

enthusiast there’s plenty to enjoy in the

Real Ale marquee. Various micro

breweries around the showground in

individual marquees and the food halls.

They will be selling a variety of ales,

ciders and perries.

Bushtucker Trials - Some say! It’s worse

than forgetting your wifes birthday. The

Bushtucker Trials are back, protein food or

just bugs and spiders. Have you got what

it takes?

Wine Tasting - Brothers Wine will be at

this year’s event. They will be giving free

hourly wine tasting sessions. In addition

there are one or two wine distributors in

the food halls who are likely to be offering

informal tastings.

Eat in the Piazza

The Piazza is that special area within

the Food Festival where show visitors

can relax and eat, choosing from a

wide range of tastes and cultures. To

complement the food there’s a large

selection of wine, champagne,

cocktails, real ales, ciders and perry,

whilst relaxing in the background

music of jazz and folk.

Childrens Area - There’s lots for the kids

to be looking at, or taking part in; there are

all the usual children’s attractions,

funhouse, bouncy castles, puppet shows

and then there’s a series of exciting

workshops including Chocolate, Pasta and

Bread Making.

Crafts Corner - Crafts corner proved a

popular feature of our festivals last year.

The main craft marquee hosts a varied

selection of crafts whilst a series of

smaller individual marquees house

working craftsmen, glass blowers,

blacksmiths, beekeepers and chainsaw

carvers.

SANDRINGHAM

HOUSE

MUSEUM & GARDENS

The Country Retreat of H.M. The Queen

Sandringham House is

famous as Her Majesty The

Queen’s private country

home where the Royal

Family spend Christmas

and New Year.

King George V wrote, “Dear

old Sandringham, the place

I love better than anywhere

else in the world,” and his son

King George VI wrote, “I have

always been happy here and I

love the place.”

The house itself, a

surprisingly warm and welcoming

country house, is

open to the public from Easter

to October, but did you know

how much else there is to see?

The gardens of Sandringham

House have been called “the

best of the Royal gardens”,

and with good reason.

Nowhere will you find a “Keep

Off the Grass” sign – visitors

are welcome to wander across

lawns and beside streams, and

there’s a lot to take in.

The great sweeps of lawn, the

woodland glades and vistas,

the peaceful streams and

lakeside walks,

dazzling autumn colour –

there is always something to

see. Other highlights include

Queen Alexandra’s Nest, a tiny

tiled summerhouse beside its

own cascading stream, sixteen

different species of oak and

many commemorative trees,

each with their own dated

plaque.

Tucked away in the gardens,

along a path bordered by

gravestones of long-dead family

dogs, is the Sandringham

Museum. It seems to house

something of everything, from

vintage and modern Royal cars

and a 1939 fire engine to delicate

china and glass – not to mention

a fascinating archive of early

photographs, a glorious

miscellany of gifts given to the

Queen and the Duke of

Edinburgh on their many

official visits and a haunting

display devoted to the officers

and men of the Sandringham

Company, killed at Gallipoli in

1915.

If gardens and museums aren’t

your thing, Sandringham Country

Park, with its 600 acres of

woodland walks, and the Visitor

Centre still have a lot to offer.

From the Visitor Centre it’s just a

short walk across to

Sandringham Church, which is

well worth a visit; on the

outside, it’s a simple Norfolk

parish church, but inside there

are angels everywhere – carved

and painted, in wood and stone

and silver, it’s a real feast for the

eyes. The church also has many

memorials to members of the

Royal Family, and a solid silver

altarpiece that has to be seen to

be believed.

Full details on

www.sandringhamestate.co.uk

There are shops and restaurants

at the Visitor Centre, too, for

those in need of a little retail

therapy; the gift shop

specialises in British-made china

and glass, and the plant centre

stocks a wide range of indoor

and outdoor plants, some grown

in the Sandringham glasshouses,

and is famous for miles around

as the source of Sandringham

apple juice, bottled by variety

and tasting more like an apple

than an apple does! A new shop,

Everything Outdoor, offers a

range of country clothing and

acessories for all weathers for

both people and dogs, and

finally, the restaurant and Terrace

café offer a wide range of

home-made meals, cakes and

sandwiches and is open all day

for a little of what you fancy.
