A message from
the Mayor:
Welcome to IndyFringe 2016!
Indianapolis is lucky to be home to
IndyFringe, which has become one of
the most exciting cultural events on the
calendar and enhances our worldwide
reputation for theatre and the arts!
With over 400 shows in just 11 days,
you can see an eclectic mix of new and
innovative performances, alongside more
traditional art forms. And don’t forget the
FREE outdoor tent where there’s something
for everyone.
During the summer festival, thousands
of people celebrate the arts in the Mass
Ave Arts & Theatre District of downtown.
With so many local restaurants, shops and
independent businesses on Mass Ave,
countless festival-goers have the chance to
explore all the cultural district has to offer.
A special thanks to the uniquely
Indianapolis collaborations and partnerships
that make IndyFringe possible. From the
local theatres hosting performances, to
the Firefighter’s Local Union 416 providing
the outdoor tent; from the neighbors
welcoming performers into their homes, to
the Mass Ave merchants serving all those
who stop by, we couldn’t do this without
the community.
Have a wonderful IndyFringe, and I hope
to see you on the Avenue or at a show!
Joe Hogsett
Mayor of Indianapolis, IN
A message from the
IndyFringe Board:
Twelve years!
We are so pleased to welcome
performers and audiences to the 12th
Annual IndyFringe Festival. From an idea
bantered about in a meeting room in 2001,
Indy Fringe now ranks as one of the oldest
fringe festivals in the United States and a
founding member of the US Fringe Festival
Association.
In Indianapolis, we are proud to offer
our special Midwest hospitality and our Indy
culture of acceptance and openness to the
performers who venture here from across
the U.S. and the world, and to our brave and
diverse audiences.
IndyFringe, with its festival and yearround
theatre offerings, has enhanced the
theatre arts.
Our development program has
nurtured many local performers and
performance groups.
IndyFringe and Mass Ave are uniquely
tied together as the Arts & Theatre District
– an eclectic mix of locally owned and
operated bars and restaurants, live theatre,
retail, boutiques, unique gifts, galleries and
spas adjacent to some of Indianapolis’ most
beautiful and historic neighborhoods.
The beauty of IndyFringe is there is
always something new and exciting on offer.
This year it’s Short Fringe – a new 50-seat
outdoor performance space located in the
Beer Tent.
Come on out and enjoy Fringe 2016!

A message from
BMO Harris Bank:
Diversity refers to the wide range of
differences that exist among people.
Inclusion is a different concept and refers
to proactive behaviors that make each
person feel welcome, safe, and a part of
the community.
Inclusive environments accept
differences and work to create a culture of
unique talents and outcomes. It’s amazing,
really, to see Fringe as a community that
works to achieve true inclusion.
The remarkable result you get from
combining diversity (the wide range of
differences amongst people) with inclusion
(proactive behaviors that make each person
feel welcome and safe) is innovation.
And, if Indianapolis is going to continue
on its path of being a remarkable livable
community, we need innovation.
BMO believes that diversity
plus inclusion results in innovation.
INDYFRINGE is one of the great examples
that diversity plus inclusion results in some
of the most innovative and best theater
and performances that the Indianapolis
community has ever seen. This is why
BMO’s sponsorship (now in our third year)
with Fringe is a perfect match. This is why
the community of BMO loves Indianapolis.
We are proud of our city and encourage
you all to get out there and enjoy the magic
of IndyFringe. There is truly something for
everyone and never a better opportunity
to experience live theatre and all that
Fringe has to offer.

A partnership joining

This incredible partnership between the North American Soccer
League’s Spring Champion, the Indy Eleven, and IndyFringe
produced the innovative Indy Eleven Theatre, now celebrating
its one-year anniversary.
And what an amazing year! The ADA-accessible, 70-seat
Indy Eleven Theatre hosted performances of the Indianapolis
Winter Magic Show and Diva Fest, one-act plays and touring
companies, most notably Recent Cutback’s “Hold On To Your
Butts,” fundraisers and corporate events. 58 events and shows
plus hundreds of rehearsals.
Our Indy Eleven friends pack the theatre with soccer fans on the
11th of every month, introducing a new and diverse audience to
the creative pulse of IndyFringe.
“Arts, sports, business and community organizations all need
to support one another in a world-class city,” said Indy Eleven
owner and CEO Ersal Ozdemir. “This unique partnership
allows us to align a wide range of audiences with very different
interests to new assets in our community.”

Buskers and Street Performances
A variety of performances take place around Mass Ave during the festival; remember to tip the
Buskers! These folks can be anything from Musicians, Poets and Storytellers, to Magicians, Fire
Jugglers and Hoopers. They come from all walks of life to bring fun and entertainment to our
streets. They want to share their art-form with the world on the oldest stage ever: the outside. In
the streets, on the sidewalks, and in the parks: this is where theatre began a long time ago, and
these Buskers are living out a tradition passed down through the ages.

History of Fringe Festivals
In 1947 eight theatre groups turned up – uninvited – to perform at
the newly-established and curated Edinburgh International Festival
in Scotland. Although not listed in the official program, the groups
performed anyway at venues they found themselves. The following
year a journalist coined the term “fringe festival” to describe these
non-juried shows that were turning up annually. The Edinburgh
Fringe is now the largest arts festival in the world with 2,871
shows. Today, there are more than 200 fringe festivals worldwide,
with 25 in the United States and 21 in Canada.
Art on the Fringe A PUBLIC ART WALKING TOUR
Join the public art staff of the Arts Council of Indianapolis for a fun insider’s look at public art on and
around Mass Ave. Dates and times are Saturday, August 20, 5:30 pm, Sunday, August 28, 5:30 pm.
Tours start near the IndyFringe Beer Tent, 628 E. St. Clair Street. Meet at the Prometheus display (just
north of the Beer Tent) and hear about the forthcoming Promethean Walk sculpture. Tours will take
about 60-90 minutes. They will be held rain or shine, unless the rain is severe or active thunderstorms
are sighted. No reservations are required. FREE!

Promethean Fire Walk A GIFT OF FIRE
The Indianapolis Professional
Firefighters maintains one of the
largest public open spaces on the
Avenue. The facility serves as a
destination for public use and as
such encourages, supports and
assists the performing arts and
other cultural activities. During
the IndyFringe Festival, it hosts
the IndyFringe Beer Tent and
Short Fringe Theatre.
At its completion, the park will
showcase a major public art
piece, designed by noted Indiana
sculptor Dale Enochs, symbolizing
the role of firefighters who
daily honor the gift of fire in
service to the community. The
Promethean Walk Sculpture will
be a 125-foot-long assemblage of
incised limestone and internallyilluminated
layered metal forms.
The heroic sixteen-foot-tall
striding figure of Prometheus
holds an orb of fire, his mythical
gift to humankind. The gift of
fire represents both creativity –
one of the guiding principles of
IndyFringe - and, if not respected
and controlled, danger.
IndyFringe has proudly partnered
with the Indianapolis Professional
Firefighters for many years. We
are grateful for their unselfish
sharing of the new Firefighters
ArtPark. Please consider the
firefighters’ service to and
sacrifice for our community
as you enjoy this lovely
public space.
Other works of art include Point
Gathering Place with public art
(Visual and Mental Paradoxes
sculpture, 1999, Jerald Jacquard,
sculptor), the Walk of Distinction,
the Fallen Firefighters Memorial
and Phoenix Rising sculpture
(1996, Dale Enochs, sculptor)
and its plaza. The Historic Fire
Museum is open every weekend
so bring the kids for a free
experience.

Prism Project THEATRE IS FOR EVERYONE. WE MEAN IT.
Inclusiveness is a core value
of IndyFringe.
So we are especially delighted
to announce our newest, most
exciting partnership with Ball
State University’s Prism Project
in reaching out to children with
exceptionalities. This partnership
is funded with a generous grant
from Impact 100.
The Prism Project uses theatre
as the medium to train children
on the autism spectrum and with
other disabilities in the art of
social relationships.
This project will also provide
a welcome respite for families
stressed by the responsibilities
of caring for children with
exceptionalities. IndyFringe
will provide a drive-through,
one-stop, drop-off and pick-up
service for families, confident
their children are in the safe
hands of specialist staff in a fully
ADA accessible theatre complex.
This is unique to any program for
children with special needs.
Students will attend
weekend classes over
10 weeks this fall, culminating
in a final Holiday Performance.
Initially we estimate 20
students from Marion County
neighborhoods and adjacent
areas of Hamilton and Johnson
counties will attend. Given the
diversity of our downtown
neighborhoods, IndyFringe will
provide two scholarships.

Two Hearted Ale
by Bell’s
Two Hearted Ale is defined by
its intense hop aroma and malt
balance. Hopped exclusively with
the Centennial hop varietal from the
Pacific Northwest, massive additions
in the kettle & again in the fermenter
lend their characteristic grapefruit &
pine resin aromas. A significant malt
body balances this hop presence;
together with the signature fruity
aromas of Bell’s house yeast, this leads
to a remarkably drinkable Americanstyle
India Pale Ale.
Champagne Velvet
Premium Pilsner
Champagne Velvet is the perfect
everyday beer for craft beer drinkers
and the perfect step-up for domestic
beer drinkers. It was first brewed in
1902 and is brewed today using that
same historical recipe. The result is a
clean, crisp, and light pilsner.

the smell of fresh apricot. The tartness
from the sour ale is balanced by the
distinct taste and sweetness of apricot,
creating a flavor reminiscent of sour
candy and fresh fruit. Exceptionally
refined and highly drinkable,
Damascene Apricot Sour is a delicious
exampe of what craft beer can be.
Dale’s Pale Ale
by Oskar Blues Brewery
America’s first hand-canned craft beer
delivers a hoppy nose, assertive-butbalanced
flavors of malts and hops
from start to finish. First canned
in 2002, our voluminously hopped
mutha is a hearty (6.5% ABV, 65
IBUs), critically acclaimed trailblazer
that has changed the way craft beer
fiends perceive canned beer. Dale’s
Pale Ale has been called “One of the
quintessential American hoppy pale
ales of our time”, was named the
“Top US Pale Ale” by the New York
Times and is the #1 selling Pale Ale in
coloRADo.

See dancers evolve into choreographers. Dance Kaleidoscope has
invited company dancers to create pieces to songs sung by their
favorite divas, but the stakes are high this year. After the festival,
some of the pieces will be selected to receive additional rehearsal
to be included in DK’s concert on February 9-12 at IRT. Come
support the dancers and let DK know which pieces you loved.
An eclectic and original program that best represents
the versatility of our organization beyond just classical
ballet. The program will include works in classical and
contemporary ballet, modern and tap. Choreography is by
ISB Artistic Director Victoria Lyras, Roberta Wong, Andrea
Bruce, William Patrick Dunne and Paul Vitali.

“Calder, The Musical” is based on the life of American artist
Alexander “Sandy” Calder, the inventor of the mobile. An
affectionate homage, the original musical vividly brings his
art to life and captures its joyfulness and whimsy through a
colorful theatrical experience of drama, music, dance, and
visual art.

ghosts of the past. Racism, prejudice, anger and fear have

be broken.

James Solomon Benn and company present a variety
show featuring pop, jazz, show tunes, gospel, poetry and
burlesque dance. This collection of Benn’s favorite music
and comic stories about growing up fat, black and gay in the
Bible belt, follows his alter-ego Little Butchie searching for
identity and self-love against the odds.
Four diverse women share a journey that forces them to
confront their worst nightmare. Trapped in a space that
is unfamiliar to all, they seem to be held hostage against
their will. Their attempts to escape from the place uncover
deeper secrets, and a more startling decision must then
be made.

This family-friendly musical takes a light look at a dark time
for Indiana’s early inhabitants, when countless squirrels cut a
swath through the state. Hear first-hand accounts from both
sides, as well as some wild hear-say from a few questionable
characters who may be prone to exaggeration.
Kurt Vonnegut speaks from beyond the grave...sort of.
Reporting on the after-life through a series of near-death
experiences, he interviews Sir Isaac Newton, William
Shakespeare, Adolf Hitler and many more. By the grace of
the Vonnegut Trust, this funny, provocative show exists only
for the 2016 IndyFringe Festival.
