Sydney is a big city in Australia. Australia is a big country. Also,<br />

it is a continent. Australia is the sixth largest country of the<br />

world but it has a small population.<br />

Sydney is located on the South-East coast of Australia. It is next<br />

to the Pacific Ocean. It is the largest city in Australia and<br />

Oceania. About 4.500.000 people live there. Also, it is the oldest<br />

city in Australia. Sydney was founded in 1788 by English<br />

people. Now, it is one of the most multicultural cities in the<br />

world. English is the first language in Sydney. Sydney is also<br />

called “the Harbour city”.<br />

Sydney has beautiful beaches, world-famous architecture and it<br />

is very rich in culture. It has got beautiful parks like Hyde park,<br />

The Royal Botanical Gardens and national parks. Sydney is<br />

considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world.<br />

The Sydney Opera house is one of the most famous Australian<br />

symbols. It is situated in Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour.<br />

Jorn Utzon was the designer. The Opera House was opened by<br />

Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen of England, on 20 October<br />

1973. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<br />

The Sydney Opera has about 3.000 events every year. It is 185<br />

metres long and 120 metres wide. It has the Grand Organ. It is<br />

very big and it contains over 10.000 pipes. In the Opera house,<br />

there are areas for performances, a recording studio, five<br />

restaurants, four souvenir shops,... . The largest area is the<br />

Concert Hall. It has 2.679 seats.<br />

About 4.5 million people visit the Sydney Opera house every<br />

year. Sydney is amazing !<br />

BRAZIL<br />

Brazil is a country in South America. About 183.000.000 people<br />

live in Brazil. Brasilia is the capital city. The official language is<br />

Portuguese because Brazil was a Portuguese colony in the<br />

past. It is a very big country. It is the largest country in South<br />

America and the 5 th in the world. It is next to the Atlantic ocean.<br />

Brazil has got a big variety of cultures, religions, music and<br />

food. There are very big cities in Brazil like Sao Paulo or Rio de<br />

Janeiro.<br />

Brazil has got many different kinds of landscape. There are big<br />

forests, wild jungles or grasslands. It has got high mountains<br />

and nice beaches. In the beaches, the weather is sunny and the<br />

water is warm most of the year. Recife, Salvador do Bahía or<br />

Río de Janeiro are some of the most popular beaches in the<br />

world. Lots of people have fun there.<br />

In the North of the country, there is the largest jungle in the<br />

world, the Amazon rainforest. In this jungle, there is the Amazon<br />

River, one of the longest river on Earth. It's amazing. A big<br />

variety of animals like giant anacondas, alligators or piranhas<br />

live there.<br />

Brazil is very big and it has different climates. For this reason<br />

they can produce lots of different products like sugarcane,<br />

coffee, rice or tropical fruits.<br />

One of the most important hobbies in Brazil is football. Most<br />

Brazilians love football. They have got lots of excellent teams<br />

and players. The Brazilian National team has won the World<br />

Cup football final several times.<br />

Also, Brazilians celebrate big carnivals. They are fantastic. The<br />

carnival in Rio de Janerio is one of the most famous carnivals in<br />

the world. There are lots of people there. They dress in colourful<br />

costumes. Thousands of tourists visit Rio for carnival every<br />

THE EIFFEL TOWER<br />

The Eiffel Tower is a very famous tower in France. It is located<br />

in Paris, the capital city of France. Paris is in the North of<br />

France. About 2.000.000 people live in Paris. People from<br />

Paris speak French.<br />

There are very important monuments in Paris like the Notre<br />

Dame Cathedral, The Louvre Museum or the Champs Eliseess.<br />

Also, Paris is famous for fashion and its restaurants. The Seine<br />

River is a very important river in Paris. Paris is also called “the<br />

city of love”.<br />

The Eiffel Tower is a communication tower. It is also called the<br />

“magician of iron”. It was constructed in 1887 to celebrate the<br />

100 th anniversary of the French revolution. Gustave Eiffel was<br />

the designer. At first, people from Paris, especially artists, didn't<br />

like the tower. But later they loved it. The construction of the<br />

Eiffel tower took about two years.<br />

The Eiffel tower is made of iron. It weighs 7.000 tons. It is 324<br />

metres tall and it has stairs with 1.665 steps. Also, there are<br />

elevators to the top. At the top of the tower, there is a panoramic<br />

view of Paris. Also, at the top of the tower there is an antenna.<br />

This antenna is 24 metres long.<br />

The four pillars supporting the tower are aligned to the points of<br />

the compass, North, South, East and West. They need 60 tons<br />

of paint to paint the tower. It is painted every 7 years.There are<br />

restaurants on the first and the second platforms.<br />

Now, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous symbols of<br />

Paris, France and Europe. More than 200 million people have<br />

visited the tower. Lots of tourists from around the world visit it<br />

every year. There are lots of souvenirs of the Eiffel tower.<br />

PABLO RUIZ PICASSO<br />

Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a famous artist. He was a sculptor,<br />

designer, writer and a painter. He was born on October 25, 1881.<br />

He was born in Malaga, Spain. His father was an artist. When he<br />

was young, Pablo studied with his father. Then, he studied art in<br />

Malaga , Barcelona and Madrid.<br />

In 1900, he went to Paris and he studied art with other young artists.<br />

Picasso has different periods. From 1901 to 1904 he painted most of<br />

his paintings in blue. It is called the “Blue Period”. From 1904 to<br />

1906, he painted in red and pink. It is called the “Pink Period”. In<br />

1907, he invented a new style of painting, “CUBISM”. Cubism is<br />

based on geometrical forms. At first, people didn't like Cubism but<br />

then, people loved the new style and it became very popular.<br />

Picasso painted “Guernica”. It is one of the most famous paintings of<br />

Cubism. Guernica represented the Spanish Civil War.<br />

Pablo Ruiz Picasso died in France in 1973 when he was 91 years<br />

MARIE CURIE<br />

Marie Curie is one of the most important scientists in history. Her<br />

real name was Maria Skladowska. She was born in Warsaw,<br />

Poland. She was born on November 7, 1867. She was a very good<br />

student. She started working as a teacher to help her family.<br />

In 1891, Marie went to Paris to work in a laboratory. There, she met<br />

Pierre Curie and they got married.<br />

Marie and Pierre discovered the element “polonium” and later,<br />

“radium”. In 1903, Marie won the Nobel Prize in Physics with her<br />

husband and another scientist. She was the first woman to receive<br />

a Nobel Prize in Physics.<br />

In 1906, Pierre died but Marie continued her scientific work. In<br />

1911, she received another Nobel Prize in Chemistry. She was the<br />

first person to receive two Nobel Prizes. She became a member of<br />

the Academy of Medicine.<br />

Marie died on July 4, 1934. Marie died of leukaemia, probably<br />

because she worked a lot with radiation during her experiments.<br />

She has two craters named after her, one on the Moon and one on<br />

Mars. Marie Curie was amazing!<br />

BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS<br />

Bottlenose dolphins are mammals, they are not fish. They are<br />

very beautiful. They can live between 40 and 50 years. They<br />

live in most of the world's oceans but they love temperate and<br />

tropical waters.<br />

Bottlenose dolphins can be 2.8 metres long. They are big<br />

animals. The largest dolphins are orcas. Also, orcas are called<br />

“the killer whale”. Dolphins are very social animals. They don’t<br />

live alone. They usually work in teams to find food. They<br />

usually swim in groups, too. Each group has about 12 dolphins.<br />

They are excellent swimmers. They can swim between 5 and<br />

12 kilometres per hour. They swim very fast.<br />

Bottlenose dolphins eat all kinds of fish. They can jump high in<br />

the air. They look kind but they can be aggressive, too. They<br />

can breathe out of water because they have a blowhole in their<br />

heads. They can stay under water about 15 minutes.<br />

Males are usually larger than females. They can weigh 454<br />

kilograms. The brain of the dolphins is bigger than the human<br />

brain. It weighs about 1.500 grams. They can't smell but they<br />

can hear very well. They produce sounds like music. They are<br />

very funny. Also, dolphins have excellent vision. They have their<br />

own language to communicate when they are in a dangerous<br />

situation or when there is some food around.<br />

Your body needs a good diet to stay healthy. Many people eat too<br />

HALLOWEEN<br />

Halloween is a celebration. It is on October 31. Halloween isn't<br />

a holiday but it is a very special day for children in Canada, the<br />

United States and some other countries around the world. Now,<br />

children from lots of different countries celebrate Halloween.<br />

Also, there are schools that celebrate Halloween.<br />

Most children love Halloween. They prepare this celebration<br />

some weeks before. They plan and decide their costumes. The<br />

most popular disguises are ghosts, monsters, princesses, bats<br />

or vampires. On Halloween, children dress up in costumes.<br />

Some children buy costumes but some children prepare the<br />

costumes with their parents.<br />

In the evening, when the children are disguised, they walk<br />

around the village, town or the neighbourhood. They go from<br />

door to door. They knock at the doors and say “TRICK or<br />

TREAT”. Neighbours give sweets and chocolates to the<br />

children. Children have bags to collect all the things.<br />

The most popular and famous symbol of Halloween is the<br />

Halloween pumpkin. It is also called “Jack O' Lantern”. On<br />

Halloween, there are lots of Jack O' Lanterns in the windows.<br />

To prepare a Jack O' Lantern, children clean the inside of a<br />

pumpkin, cut the face and put a candle inside. Black and<br />

orange are the most traditional colours of Halloween.<br />

Also, people decorate their houses with the Halloween symbols<br />

like ghosts, vampires, black cats, witches, spiders and other<br />
